WROCLAW DID YOU KNOW?Take a short stroll up from the MarketSquare (Rynek) to Wroclaw Universityand you will see one of the city's most

famous statues: 'The Naked Fencer', or

'Szermierz' in Polish. According to local

legend whenever a pretty virgin girl

happens to glance at the, ahem, 'sword'

of the celebrated monument then the

metal warrior's weapon... how can we

put this... 'readies itself for battle'.

    If you're wondering whether that

    self-proclaimed 'strict Catholic girl' you

met the night before is telling porkie

pies or not, then it's time for a little

    walk to the University Quarter.

Visit the fourth biggest city in most countries and you might not beexpecting much... a couple of factories, a few ring roads and a

smattering of provincial discos. In Wroclaw Poland however what

you're in for is a very pleasant surprise. Often overshadowed by

touristy Krakow, or the capital Warsaw, little Wroclaw punches far

above its weight with attractions that are finally being discovered by

the rest of Europe. Leafy belts of green along the river Oder, cycling

paths alongside canals and over a hundred bridges draw

comparisons with a miniature Amsterdam, whilst one of the most

splendid squares on the continent deserves unique recognition.

These and other treasures, such as the twin-towered cathedral,

dozens of Gothic churches, several delightful parks, including the

Japanese and Botanical Gardens, mark Wroclaw as an obvious

tourist destination, but it's the atmosphere of the place that has

people coming back again and again. The atmosphere of sheer

'laidbackness'. Whether its coffees in charismatic cafes, beers on the

benches of the Rynek's restaurants, or vodka shots in the pulsating

hotspots of Pasaz Niepolda, Wroclaw is the perfect place to relax,

    talk, dance... and drink!

The Venice of PolandWroclaw may be a relatively small blipon the European radar, especially when

compared to the likes of Paris, Rome orBarcelona, but as holidaymakers arebecoming more and more adventurousthe many of charms of this small butsassy city are deservedly beingdiscovered.

Even ardent locals won't try and tell youthat 'the Venice of Poland' can matchItaly's original version for sheerromance and beauty, but you don'tneed to be a Wroclawian to be swayedby the character of this little town...Wroclaw's Old Town alone boasts thesecond largest medieval market squarein Europe (the first prize goes toKrakow), dozens of spectacular gothic

churches, scores of bridges over scenicwaterways, and plenty of lush parklandbesides. Now cross the river onto Wroclaw'spicturesque islands and, apart fromplenty of strolling opportunities, you willfind some of city's most precious jewels. The Ostrow Tumski in particular is a realtreasure chest and tourists are drawn toit like bees to honey to admire thestunning spires that pierce Wroclaw'sskyline north of the river.

Meanwhile, if you're in Wroclaw formore than a couple of days, it's wellworth venturing out East in search ofhidden bounty. The Plac Grunwaldzki, again just across the Odra, isn't an

obvious tourist attraction but hides ahistory of more prosperous times, whilstgo that bit further and you will discoverodd ball treasures such as theCentennial Hall (now UNESCO listed asone of the World's most importantcultural sites!), Wroclaw's very own zooand the charming Japanese Gardens. Orwhy not head right to the city limits andto the Olympic Stadium, built by Hitlerfor the 1936 Berlin Olympics?

Thanks to its colourful history Wroclawcan count both treasures left over fromits time as the German city of Breslau,as well as important cultural legaciestransported from the old Polish city of

Lwow (now Lviv in modern dayUkraine). Most of Wroclaw's splendidarchitecture falls into the formercategory, but amongst the latter is theunique Panorama of Raclawice, considered by many Poles as the symbolof the city.

Of course you could be one of thosehedonistic bunch who couldn't care lessabout the city's rich culture and troubledhistory... In which case step this way fortop tips on hotels, eating out, drinkingand nightlife!

    Wroclaw Travel Tips

Since 2006 making a phone call from aPolish landline to another Polish landlinehas changed. You now have to dial azero and the appropriate area code

before the number. So in Wroclaw younow dial '0' then '71' and then thenumber. If you are making a call fromabroad nothing has changed. You simplydial +48 and then the city code andthen the number!

Exchanging currencies in Wroclaw is abreeze - just look for a sign that reads'Kantor' or 'Exchange'. Remember, thecloser you get to the centre or to highlytouristy areas, the worse the exchangerates are likely to be.

Call for a taxi - it's free and the fare willbe cheaper than hailing one from theranks. Oh, and don't waste your energytrying to flag down a moving vehicle. It's forbidden for taxis to stop ad hoc.

Wanna call home? Your coins are

useless! Most phoneboxes in Polandoperate on calling cards ('kartatelefoniczna', pronounced car-tate-le-fo-neech-na). You can find them atany kiosk.

Like collecting antiques? FYI: It's illegalto export certain items, particularly oldpaintings, produced before 1945.

Tipping is not necessarily expected inPoland, although things are slowlychanging. No matter how generous youare feeling however, keep one thing inmind: saying "thank you" when thewaiter/waitress collects your moneyequals "keep the change" - no matterhow big the difference! In other wordskeep quiet until your change is safelyback in your pocket.

Poles are natural hagglers. When inRome... If you haven't booked ahead, try your luck at negotiating your hotelfare, especially in the low season.

Poles love to party. As such bars, pubsand clubs frequently stay open until thelast guest leaves. Trying to outdrink aPole? Bring some medicine...

Even if you think it'll be warm, bring atleast one heavier garment. Polishweather has a mind of its own. And inwinter it goes without saying that

thermals, hat and gloves and essentiallifesavers.

Poles are passionate about their food.Throw away your preconceptions aboutmiserable eastern bloc stews, and beprepared for a great surprise.Where's the restroom? If you see a signwith two geometric shapes on it, you'reheaded in the right direction (boys havea triangle and girls have a circle). Alsopopular in Wroclaw are the phrases 'DlaPanow' meaning 'For Men' and 'Dla Pan'meaning 'For Women'.

Explore!!! Wroclaw, like most things inthis world, hides its nearest and dearestoff the beaten path...

    Travelling to WroclawBy air

Wroclaw has its own internationalairport on Strachowice (Wroclaw, ulSkarzynskiego 36), roughly 12km fromthe city centre. It's a bit smaller thanthose in other Polish cities, butfunctional nonetheless. It will be rebuiltsoon as the new terminal is on the way! From here you can get to Warsaw,Alicante, Barcelona, Bolon, Burgas (from2010.06.12), Bristol, Brussels, Cork,Doncaster Sheffield, Dortmund, Dublin,Dsseldorf, Dsseldorf Weeze, EastMidlands, Eindhoven, Forli, FrankfurtHahn, Frankfurt am Main, Glasgow,Liverpool, London, Malaga (from2010.06.25), Milan, Munich, Oslo, Paris,Rome, Shannon. Many of these routes

have been added recently courtesy ofRyanair, Wizzair and other budgetairlines, and the chances are more hotdestinations will follow!

    By rail

OK, so Polish trains aren't exactly thefastest or most modern the world hasever seen. For many, however, arrivingby rail is always the way to go... Seethe world fly by in a relatively quickexpress train or take in the country airduring a cruise on a regular train (eventhough you could probably run faster!).An intercity train to Warsaw, forexample, will only take you at least fivehours and one to Krakow around four

and half. Poznan at least is a relativelyeasy jaunt of two and half hours. Ofcourse, Poland is not where it all stops:Budapest, Dresden, Hamburg andPrague are all just a few stops away...Find the Dworzec Glowny (Main TrainStation) in the south of town on ulicaPilsudskiego. Check our map online forprecise location!

    By bus

Maybe the thought of spending a wholeday on a bus is not exactly high on yourlist. Just remember one thing: this isabout as cheap as it gets! Yeah, sometimes you can find some great

deals with discount airlines (if you buythirty years in advance, with noguarantee... or something), but busesprovide a steady, affordable alternative. And if you're a big fan of moviesdubbed-over in Polish then this iscertainly the option for you! Privatecoach companies will gladly take you toPrague or just about anywhere inneighbouring Germany (and beyond). For domestic routes, just look for threeletters: PKS. Find the bus station at theback of the Main Train Station.

    By car

Wroclaw is very well connected, at leastby Polish standards. Three international

roads cut through this fair city, thegreatest of which is dubbed the A4,meaning you can cruise at top speed ineither direction - towards Germany orover towards Krakow in Malopolska.

Having said that, the reality of driving inPoland is a little less rosy. This countrystill has the highest accident rate in allof Europe and most of the smaller roadsare fit only for SUVs. All the same, ifyou like being in control (and having anadventure!) then this is the way for you.

    Getting around WroclawBy taxi

Fancy an adventure in Polish culture?Do you like rally racing? Well, thentravelling by taxi is your best bet! Polishcabbies are known for their aggressive -but effective - driving as well as theireagerness to share opinions on justabout anything. How's the governmentdoing? What's the weather going to belike in a year? Should you invest in

bonds? The taxi driver will have all theanswers to these important questions. Moreover, he'll probably share themwith you whether or not you ask...Remember to call for a cab instead ofsnagging one from the ranks. The call isusually free and you'll save anywherefrom 5-30% on your fare.

    By car

Once again, this is an option for theadventurous... Polish roads are decentat best and Polish drivers in generalshare some of the aforementionedcabbie characteristics. Add to that someunusually complicated road signs and

strict limitations on traffic within OldTown areas, and you've got yourself apotential headache. All in all, it'sprobably better to take advantage of thesurprisingly good public transport. Ifyou do decide to take your own wheels, however, remember that most parkingspots in and around the centre are notfree. Get a parking pass from a kiosk orfrom the automated machines which dotthe street.

    By public transport

Every major city in Poland has a quitegood public transportation system. InWroclaw, you'll have no problem gettingto your destination on a train, tram or

bus. Tickets will cost you anywhere from1.25-3PLN, depending on whetheryou're travelling during the day or night, taking an express or buying adiscounted ticket (students, seniors,etc.). Anticipating a slightly longer stay?Take advantage of the 1, 5, 10, 30, 60or 90-day passes available. Buy yourtickets at one of the many kiosksaround town or at one of the handyautomated ticket machines.

Pod PapugamiMovie madness in the Rynek

With its abundance of wacky moviememorabilia, from vintage cameras toframed posters of Hollywood stars, andwith dishes given names like 'BluesBrothers' and 'Marilyn Fingers', youmight think Pod Papugami was inserious danger of being naff. Somehowit cheekily sidesteps this tag, deliveringa cafe-cum-restaurant with such avibrant atmosphere that we defy you tofind a more upbeat and fun place tolunch in Wroclaw. Its location, bang inthe middle of the Rynek, means that it

is always crowded with a mix of localsand tourists, who noisily bustle in andout throughout the day, eager to refreshthemselves after a particularly gruellingspate of retail therapy or an arduoussight-seeing session. It's a tough life!

Amalfi Ristorante PizzeriaSunny Italian eatery in Wroclaw

Amalfi is a cheerful, attractiverestaurant in Old Wroclaw decked out insunny tones. Of course, Mr. Sun may

not have his hat on year round inPoland, but here you can rest assuredthat you'll feel cosy even when thesnowflakes are falling. For over 7 yearsnow, the owners are doing their best tobring a dash of Amalfi cheer to town.Meanwhile, the chef rustles up all theclassics from the land of Leonardo usingingredients sourced directly from small,family-run operations in southern Italy.Every pizza made here is a uniquemasterpiece of taste and flavour thanksto the original, wood-burning oven, traditional Italian recipes supervised byItalian chefs. Novocaina RestaurantHigh quality Italian cuisine

The simplicity of Italian cuisine has itsmany advocates, and none keener thanthe owners of this restaurant on theRynek. The ideology behind Novocainais to create Italian dishes from the veryfinest quality ingredients and recipes, which is why they only select organicfoodstuffs and cook their cuisine with anauthentic sandstone oven fuelled bycherry wood. Impressive stuff! The

decor is no let-down either, andcertainly a bit more inventive than youraverage Italian joint. A fusion ofbaroque and modern styles, inside you'llfind vast and slightly sinister oil painting

overhanging gilt-framed plasma TVscreens. And with so much space, youcan comfortably bring a group of friendsand choose from the main floor or thetwo mezzanines above - you even havea great view onto the Market Squarefrom one!

    Raclawice PanoramaWe're surrounded!

Wroclaw's most important piece ofcultural heritage, the Panorama of theBattle of Raclawice, is also the city'smost visited tourist attraction. It is avast cyclindrical painting designed tocommemorate the 100th anniversary ofthe famous Kosciuszko Insurrection, when in 1794 a Polish rebellion defeatedthe Russian army (a case of winning thebattle but losing the war, unfortunatelyfor the Poles!). The painting was movedfrom Lwow after World War II and isnow housed in an impressive (albeit

ugly) purpose-built Rotunda, designedespecially so that the viewer feels thatthey are in the midst of the battle.Half-hour long tours start on the halfhour, and if your Polish ain't too hotthen you can take an audiophone in anymajor European language.

Opera: The Woman with NoShadow21 OctoberOpera House, ul. Swidnicka 35

Richard Strauss' opera Die Frau ohnSchatten (The Woman with No Shadow)will be premiering at the Wroclaw Operathis month. The piece is considered oneof the Romantic composer's best andincludes the libretto of his frequentcollaborator Hugo von Hofmannsthal.

The Woman with No Shadow isadmittedly a little heavier than Strauss'more famous works such as Salome, asit contains a more complex andsymbolic libretto than his other works. However, fans of Strauss and theRomantic era will certainly be satisfiedwith this collection of beautiful andcomplex compositions.
