L’informatique cognitive au service de la
société, des citoyens et de la santé
2

HANGZHOU COGNITIVE CARE Introduce Watson For Oncology To
Hospitals Across China
“Watson has the power to
transform how doctors battle
cancer in China and around
the world, providing
physicians with insights
regarding treatment options
that help them customize
therapeutic recommendations
specific to each individual,
based on a patient’s specific
needs.”
- Zhen Tu, CEO
http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/50346.wss
Business Challenge
Cancer is the leading cause of death among China’s
population. To be able to diagnose approximately 12,000
new cancer cases each day, doctors need to stay up to
date about best practices in treatment given the high
volume of new and emerging oncology research.
The transformation
21 hospitals across China plan to adopt Watson for
Oncology trained by Memorial Sloan Kettering, a cognitive
computing platform for physicians to help them deliver
personalized, evidence-based cancer treatment options.

Business Challenge
The Centre and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Schäfer, a leading
expert in rare diseases are contacted yearly by a large
amount of patients with year-long medical histories,
including thousands of medical documents. The care
providers are overwhelmed, not only by the large
number of patients, but also by the huge amount of data
to be reviewed.
The transformation
The Rhön-Klinikum will pilot a Watson-powered
cognitive assistance system at the University Hospital
Marburg. The system will be used to facilitate the
preparation and evaluation of existing patient information
before and during a consultation with physicians. This
will help the doctors reach the accurate diagnostic
decisions and select appropriate treatment options
faster.

THOMAS JEFFERSON UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL Launch Cognitive Hospital Rooms
Powered By IBM Watson Internet Of
Things “Being in a hospital can often
be a hectic, anxiety-ridden,
or even intimidating
experience for patients and
their loved ones. If we can
minimize that discomfort, we
are doing a lot to increase
the well-being and care of
our patients.”
- Neil Gomes, VP for
Technology Innovation and
Consumer Experience
https://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/50692.wss
Business Challenge
Enhancing the patient experience and bringing
personalized, agile and responsive care to the patients is
getting harder as 81 percent of physicians describe
themselves as either over-extended or at full capacity.
Physicians also spend 20 percent of their time on non-
clinical paperwork.
The transformation
Cognitive hospital rooms powered by IBM Watson
Internet of Things (IoT) are designed to enhance the
patient experience and help bring deeper levels of
personalized, agile and responsive care to its patients.

WATSON HEALTH MEDICAL IMAGING COLLABORATIVE Medical Imaging Leaders Tap Watson to
Tackle Cancer, Diabetes, Eye Health, Brain
Disease and Heart Disease “There is strong potential for
systems like Watson to help to
make radiologists more
productive, diagnoses more
accurate, decisions more
sound, and costs more
manageable.”
- Nadim Michel Daher, Medical
Imaging and Informatics
Analyst for Frost & Sullivan http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/49985.wss
Business Challenge
Medical images are by far the largest and fastest-growing data
source in the healthcare industry as they account for at least 90%
of all medical data today. The volume of medical images can be
overwhelming to even the most sophisticated specialists;
radiologists in some hospital emergency rooms are presented
with thousands of images each day.
The transformation
IBM Watson will extract insights from previously ‘invisible’
unstructured imaging data and combine that with a broad variety
of data from other sources like data from EHRs, radiology and
pathology reports, lab results, doctors’ progress notes, medical
journals, clinical care guidelines and published outcomes studies.
This will help physicians make personalized care decisions
relevant to a specific patient while building a body of knowledge to
benefit broader patient populations.

SIMPLEC Innovating care for persons living with
Dementia or related cognitive disorders with
IBM Watson “We’re changing people’s lives
significantly—not just the
patients’ but their families’ too.
That’s what we’re
accomplishing with the power
of Watson and IBM and
SimpleC.”
– Dan Pompilio, Founder and
Chief Executive Officer,
SimpleC
http://ecc.ibm.com/case-study/us-en/ECCF-WUC12539USEN#
Business Challenge
Traditionally, to care for individuals with dementia-related disorders and
curtail their symptoms, the healthcare industry has depended largely on
specially trained clinicians or antipsychotic medications. Such drugs,
however, often have severe behavioral side effects, and skilled therapists
aren’t always available to provide assistance when these side effects occur.
What’s more, both options can prove costly and unsustainable in the long
term, for families and the overall industry as well.
The transformation
SimpleC is a science-based technology company that designs nondrug,
media-based behavioral therapies to engage individuals. The therapies are
supported by software solutions that collect, categorize and quantify the
symptoms of dementia to optimize clinical efficacy. The company can now
use Watson technology to analyze symptoms and accelerate the design of
patient profiles and to gain insights from unstructured data to adjust care
plans or therapies accordingly.

WELLTOK Providing engaging and personalized health
and wellness platform to consumers with
IBM Watson
https://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/48924.wss
Business Challenge
Americans overestimate their own health, and this puts them at greater risk
for heart disease and other serious illness. Right now, the U.S. spends more
on health care than any other country. Prevention is important to changing
this dynamic.
The transformation
CaféWell Concierge application will leverage natural language and cognitive
capabilities for both user interaction and extraction of knowledge from
underlying plain text sources to help drive the Intelligent Health Itineraries
capability. This solution is anticipated to offer personalized, location-based
guidance on matters like exercise, eating, preventative service benefits and
other health and wellness-related matters.
The CaféWell Concierge has the potential to dynamically personalize the health experience. Consumers
would be more empowered to make positive health changes driven by user-centric, intelligent
recommendations.

Management Platform to Transform
Behavioral Healthcare “Built with our deep expertise in
behavioral health and using
IBM’s technology and security
prowess, Mentrics represents
what we believe will be a
turning point in the industry’s
ability to substantially improve
care quality and outcomes, as
well as network efficiency for
reduced costs.”
- Michael Jarjour, President and
CEO
http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/49564.wss
Business Challenge
Healthcare costs for people diagnosed with mental illness and
common chronic health conditions are 75 percent higher than
those without a mental health diagnosis. However, the
fragmented behavioral health care system often leads to a lack of
coordination between multiple care providers, different state
policies and diverse payment structures. This often results in
poor health outcomes and higher costs across health systems.
The transformation
Using Watson Health Cloud, the system will gather and
aggregate health data, including behavioral and physical medical
services and prescription claims, from fragmented sources into
one easy-to-use platform that can deliver comprehensive and
predictive insights for a coordinated, collaborative and holistic
approach to improving care for individuals suffering from
behavioral health conditions.
