ADVANCED RESOURCE RECOVERY It’s a source of pride that we blend the best available international advanced resource recovery technologies with local skills. SITA is the leading Advanced Resource Recovery company in Australia, and owns and operates 7 facilities including Australia’s first dedicated process engineered fuels (PEF) facility. This represents over 50% of all commercially operated advanced resource recovery facilities in Australia. Through the operation of specialist technologies, these facilities are designed to minimise the disposal of residual waste to landfill and recycle and recover valuable resources back into the economy. Organics embedded in the waste can be composted and further processed into marketable products. The $50 million SAWT Advanced Resource Recovery Facility in Kemps Creek, Sydney, NSW is the future of sustainable organics management and resource recovery in Australia. It diverts over 60% of MSW and 94% of source-separated organics from landfill reducing Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90,000 tonnes per year. The facility recycles its own water requirements, and produces 50,000 tonnes of compost destined for a range of soil applications. The $80 million BioVision Advanced Resource Recovery Facility in Neerabup, Perth, WA services 7 metropolitan councils in the Mindarie Regional Council area including the City of Perth. It retrieves and processes over 60% of input material back into the productive economy, with the organic products destined for the local horticultural and agricultural markets. SITA’s Advanced Resource Recovery Facility in Cairns, QLD offers recycling and composting solutions to more than 130,000 residents in the council areas of Cairns, Port Douglas and Mareeba. Compost produced at this plant is distributed to banana growers and local cane farms, achieving a 25% improvement in sugar cane yields. In 1999, the Port Stephens Council was the first council in NSW to adopt an advanced controlled resource recovery process for its domestic waste, and SITA has successfully operated the facility since early 2007. Setting a benchmark for organics recycling in Australia is SITA’s BioWise Advanced Resource Recovery Facility in Kwinana, WA. This facility uses a static aerated pile composting technology to transform source separated C&I solid organics, garden organics, and grease trap waste into high grade compost that is then sold to the home garden, parks and sporting fields of Perth. The SITA-ResourceCo Advanced Recovery Facility in Adelaide, SA is the first of its kind in Australia and has a processing capacity of up to 350,000 tonnes of combustible commercial and construction waste. It produces a PEF product (also known as RDF) that is used as a fuel substitute for coal and gas in high combustion facilities. ENGINEERED LANDFILLS SITA owns and operates 16 transfer stations and 8 landfills in Australia. These landfills operate to the highest Australian standards including engineered liners, leachate recirculation systems, gas extraction and exacting management practices.

capacity of 450 MLD as well asan 85 km water transferpipeline.

• Over time, the plant’s drinkingwater production capacitycould be increased to 600 MLD

• The project aims to preservethe natural environment bycreating an ecological spacethrough an ambitiousrevegetation program. As inPerth the desalination plantenergy requirements will bemet by wind power to minimisethe project’s carbon footprint.

WASTE ANDRECYCLED WATER

• Degrémont has extensiveexperience in the design, buildand operations of 5 advancedwastewater treatment plants inAustralia and New Zealand.

• In Cronulla the plant wasdesigned and built on behalf ofSydney Water and serves thecommunities of the CronullaSutherland Peninsula. It treatswastewater from 210,000people and has the capacity totreat 52.7 MLD.

• In Noosa Degrémontdeveloped, built and has a 25-year contract, to operate theplant for Noosa council (nowknown as Unitywater). With adaily capacity of 12 ML, it treatswastewater from 45,000residents.

• In Hutt Valley near WellingtonNew Zealand, Degrémont as amember of the Hutt ValleyWastewater Services JVdesigned, built and has a 20-year contract to operate a plantserving 160,000 residents forthe Lower and Upper Hutt citycouncils. This includes theoperation and maintenance of102 kilometres of bulk sewernetworks and 19 pumpstations. All sludge is dried to>90% and pelletised.

• The Mangere wastewatertreatment plant servesapproximately 1 millionresidents in Auckland and wasdesigned and built on behalf ofWatercare Services as part of aconsortium which includedNew Zealand Water Services (asubsidiary of Degrémont).

• In Pimpama, Degrémontparticipated in an alliance todesign and build an advancedwastewater treatment andrecycling plant for Gold CoastWater (now known asAllconnex Water). The plantreceives a daily average 17 MLof wastewater whichundergoes comprehensivephysical, chemical andbiological treatment. Of these17 million litres, 9 million litresare treated to grade A+standard using an ultra filtrationmembrane and UV disinfectionprocess and are distributed forurban uses such as cleaningand watering.

WATER ANDWASTEWATER NETWORKS

• In February 2011, SUEZENVIRONNEMENT, Degrémontand partner Transfield Services(as part of The AllwaterAlliance) were awarded by SAWater a 10 year contract tosupply water and wastewaterservices to the city of Adelaide,South Australia.

• This project involves theoperation and maintenance ofsix water treatment plants, sixwastewater treatment plants, a16,000km water network, aswell as recycled water schemesand minor capital works to overone million inhabitants in thecity of Adelaide.

• South Australia is the drieststate in Australia and thedelivery of water andwastewater services to

Adelaide provides an excitingchallenge for the SUEZENVIRONNEMENT GROUP todemonstrate its capabilities andexpertise.

• The project will provide safe, reliable and secure waterservices to ensure the growthand future development ofAdelaide.

• Solutions range fromDegrémont’s own proprietarytechnologies such as theInnoplana® dryer and theThermylis® incinerator, tolicensed technologies such asthe Heliantis® solar dryer andincludes: recovery of energyfrom dried sludge for use as analternative fuel to fossil energy;use of sludge for agriculturalpurpose, and recycling ofbiogas into fuel.

EQUIPMENT ANDINDUSTRY SOLUTIONS

• Through its equipment businessline Degrémont Technologies,Degrémont is able to addressthe needs for water treatmentequipment in general, and thespecific requirements of ourindustrial customers. Relevantindustry sectors include oil andgas, mining, coal seam gas andprocess industries.

• Our separation, disinfection andsludge treatment equipment, individually supplied or pre-assembled on skids, is ofparticular interest to industriesas well as municipalities.

• For more complex industrialtreatment processes, we drawfrom the expertise of our NorthAmerican and European sistercompanies, including OndeoIndustrial Solutions.

DRINKING WATER

• The Prospect water filtrationplant commenced production inNovember 1996 and canprovide up to 80% of Sydney’sclean, safe, drinking water.

• The contract to build, own andoperate was signed withSydney Water for a term of 25years.

• The plant has a maximum dailycapacity of 3,000 million litresper day (MLD) and supplies 3.5million people.

• It is recognised as one of theworld’s largest water filtrationplants.

DESALINATION

• In Australia the Perth seawaterdesalination plant is anoutstanding example ofDegrémont’s DESALINATIONexpertise.

• The plant uses reverse osmosistechnology and was the first ofits kind in Australia to providedesalinated water for large-scale public consumption.

• Operating since November2006, it supplies 140 MLD ofdrinking water to an estimated1.5 million people.

• In July 2009 the State ofVictoria awarded SUEZENVIRONNEMENT andDegrémont (as part of theAquaSure consortium) theworld’s largest public-privatedesalination project. Thisproject includes the financing, design, construction and the 27year operation of aDESALINATION plant with a
