Ses deux premiers disques, Puer Dolor et Up Go the Arms,ont été encensés par la critique. Loveshit, c'est le titre dutroisième. De descendance maltaise, quoique né dans lesLaurentides, Jason Bajada avoue avoir toujours eu uneobsession pour les chansons tristes. Les siennes sont d'unemélancolie envoûtante, tout en contrastes avec les rythmesenjoués qui les portent. The title says it all; this is a heartbreak album. But a rather pretty one. Montreal's Jason Bajada knows how to craft a catchy tune, using his woe-is-me feelings to build poetic arguments that feel life-important, wistful and nostalgic all at once. "Please pour me another drink / I have a lot to think about / As she walks away," he sings, over steady-strummed acoustic guitar on Sad Song About You #2. It's another collection of rootsy, brooding, beautiful songs that Bajada seems to craft in his sleep - which is where his music might softly send you. Expertly produced, and with a variety of tones and textures, this is quality emoting from end to end. The Wolf Parade cover is a nice touch. Rating 4

Keeping listeners engaged to an album where the artist is wallowing in heartbreak takes some mastery. On his first major label release, Loveshit, Montreal’s Jason Bajada bathes in self-pity and regret in such an idle manner that a rushed listen could easily elicit an unfair knee jerk reaction. Loveshit is introspective and understated acoustic pop that takes its time in making an impact. There’s a throwback to acoustic folk rock singers of the late ‘60s in the melancholy, ethereal sound of Loveshit’s tracks. Layered vocals with ample amounts of reverb produce a tranquilizing effect on tracks such as album opener ‘Cut, Watch, Leave’ and the psychedelic ode ‘Evolution Kind,’ rife with distorted guitars. Evoking an aura of sophisticated French sixties pop, guest artist Kim Neundorf coos sweetly a la Francoise Hardy amidst unabashedly flaunted synth percussion on ‘Home’s Still Your Bones.’ And though the album’s first single, ‘Ten Days In Miami,’ attains the greatest emotional kick - reminiscent of Aimee Mann’s gloomy terrain – it’s the Beatles-esque, ‘Hard Not To Quit’ with its lush melodic hooks that provide the album’s high point. Bajada succeeds in creating a finely crafted album by putting his lyrics at the forefront, placing them against elegant melodies, and delivering them in a hushed, conversational manner. Consequently, Loveshit slowly works its way into the subconscious of its listener like the mellowing effects of a glass of Bordeaux.

emerged in mid-February, when couples are encouraged to mark their love (andmake love), and singles are pressured to pick up for Valentine’s Day. Bajadaspent that week reopening old wounds, revisiting the deeply autobiographicalpain that inspired his new record. In the past, he drew inspiration from hismusical idols, striving to craft the perfect pop song, but when his love life hitthe skids, his broken heart consumed him and became his muse.

“This is not me trying to be clever,” he says, “this was the result of adepression. Love kicked my ass.”

Although writing about the experience provided a productive outlet, it wasn’texactly therapeutic, and neither was playing the songs live last year. “Now I’mfine—I can perform these songs, I didn’t kill myself—but at first, it wasexcruciating,” Bajada explains. “It was an on and off relationship, so there weretimes when the songs were written and we were back together, I’d beperforming a song like ‘Loveshit’ and this person was in the audience or sellingthe merch.

“I was writing these songs to prove this person wrong, to call them on fuckingup the relationship,” he adds. “Every song was like ammo, like adding anotherrose to the bouquet, to say, ‘No one will ever love you like I do, try tounderstand this.’”

As the songs became more familiar to Bajada, the pain of playing them woreoff, but so did the intensity. On tours with Joseph Arthur and MarthaWainwright, watching the headliners from the sidelines encouraged him toreboot his heartbreak for the sake of the show.

“Martha performed ‘Bloody Motherfucking Asshole’ every night, and whethershe was in front of 75 people in Joliette or 900 people in Quebec City, shenailed it, she ripped my heart to shreds.”

With a new heart-hole, Bajada found ways to summon up those feelings.Getting tipsy on three glasses of wine does the trick, but at the record’s medialaunch, fate delivered an even better condition.

“Thankfully, I was really sick last week—I looked like loveshit. I had a fever so Iwas sweating up there, and singing demanded so much effort, my voice wasbreaking. It ended up being the best show we’d ever done.”

Bajada’s previous records, Puer Dolor and Up Go the Arms, drew their share offollowers, as did a series of key support slots—also including Dumas, a gig thatgave the singer-songwriter unprecedented access to francophone audiences.But the sonic quality of this album, which Bajada attributes in part to drummerGeorge Donoso III (ex- Dears, currently with Black Diamond Bay) and theTroublemakers production team, as well as the earnest, universal appeal of thelyrics, elevates his oeuvre to a different class.

“It’s funny that with the saddest event in my life, I ended up getting this recorddeal [with MapleMusic], and people are clearly connecting more with themusic,” he says. “People tell me, ‘It was good before, but this is way better, thisis more honest.’ So I’ll have to make sure I get really depressed again nexttime around.”

Jason Bajada fills our hearts with songs of amazing love that, toooften, turns to bitterness

For his new album, Montreal singer-songwriter Jason Bajada chose from among 40 songs he wrote about a relationship that wentsour.

"You mean Love's Hit?" Jason Bajada was being facetious, dancing around the provocative title of hisnew album Loveshit - a document of heartache as raw as anything he has ever written.

"I don't know if I need to explain that," the Montrealer said. "It's pretty self-explanatory. Everyone hasbeen through an écoeurement d'amour and wondered: 'How can something that started so amazingturn out so destructive, bitter and filled with resentment?' "

Sung in warmly whispered tones over gently strummed acoustic guitar (with occasional flourishes ofpiano and strings), Bajada's tender songs belie their dark themes; each one is loaded with emotionaldevastation. He wrote 40 in all, of which nine were chosen for this album (plus a cover of Wolf Parade'sYou Are a Runner and I Am My Father's Son).

looking out at the falling snow. "Every song was like ammo. There's a line on (the title track) Loveshit -'So keep singing me my songs / songs that try to prove you wrong / and keep you from leaving.' Everysong I was writing, I felt like I could win her back."

He is in a better place now. The material on Loveshit was written and recorded more than a year ago,that tumultuous relationship now fading into memory. The time since has been spent putting the piecesin place to give what he rightly considers his best album a proper platform to be heard.

So far, so good. The disc was released last week through respected Toronto label MapleMusic. Andafter getting a flurry of attention in 2007 for his 20-gig stint opening for Québécois pop artist Dumas atLe National, Bajada has found new performance allies, opening for Martha Wainwright on several datesin December, and for Brooklyn singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur in January.

He has been taking notes. Seeing Wainwright perform night after night offered insight into how todeliver maximum intensity when playing such personal material over and over.

"My songs were starting to feel like covers at some point," he said. "It had been over a year, and I wasafraid the record was going to come out and I wasn't going to feel them anymore."

One night, he was backstage with Wainwright's band while she performed Bloody Mother F----ingAsshole, a no-holds-barred song for her father, alone.

"It was always my favourite song," Bajada said. "It sounds like Dylan, as a woman. I heard the chordsand went to watch her from the side of the stage. She schooled me. She's been playing that song foryears, and her delivery was perfect. It was so emotional. It felt like she was singing it for the first time,as cliché as that might sound.

"I realized there was something wrong with my show ... . When we got to Quebec City,

I was like, 'Okay, have a drink, chill out, and really deliver a performance, sing every line and let it takeover.' "

It was the finishing touch on a process that had begun during the recording with production duo LesTroublemakers. The pair helped bring Bajada's music to life more vividly than ever before.

"It was a completely different ball game," he said.

"They have really varied styles, from Tom Waits to Afro-Cuban; they're all over the map. But we had thesame references. We listened to Beck's Sea Change to get the lush, vintage sound. I went alone intothe studio - before, I had worked with a drummer all the time - then we brought people in as needed.

"I got George Denoso (previously) from the Dears and (now) Black Diamond Bay; and Marc-AndréLaroque, who I met through Dumas. ... It's amazing how just the drums changed the way the bass wasplayed and how I sang everything. We went for that Ringo/Fleetwood Mac dead, dead, dead, dead

drum sound. ... (Suddenly) I could hear myself more, I could just not sing as loud and find thoseintricacies, details in my voice."

Now that Bajada has hit rock bottom and bounced back, he can't help but wonder where his inspirationwill come from in the future. He's not so sure he needs to get his heart broken every time he makes analbum, but this experience should tide him over for a while.

"I still write a lot about that," he said. "I'm the same person. I'm a sucker for a sad love song. I know thefeeling now. I can channel it instead of mimic it. It's something I've been through.

"It's weird. I think growing up, it was always an obsession - how come so many songs are aboutheartbreak? How do you either tell a woman you love her or that she's broken your heart, in a waythat's never been done before?

"But then, 40 songs came out of this relationship - which is ridiculous, almost pathetic, but fascinating."

L'album «Loveshit» de Jason Bajada,sorti le 10 février, est né d'une peined'amour. Les artistes se fonthabituellement discrets quant à leur vieprivée sauf que l'auteur-compositeur etinterprète montréalais se livre sansretenue. Cette expérience douloureuse adonné vie à de l'art et de la beauté, dit-ilen entrevue à Showbizz.net.

Le duo de réalisateurs Troublemakers aréalisé cet opus paru au Canada parl'entremise de Maple Music. JasonBajada y propose une pop teintée de

folk un brin mélancolique sans être déprimante à outrance.

Dures épreuves

Le titre «Loveshit», que l'on pourrait vaguement traduire par «merde d'amour», semble à prime abord sarcastique et amer.«C'est loin d'être sarcastique», réplique Jason Bajada au téléphone. Ce titre représente le contenu de son album, croit-il:«un document qui reflète le déroulement d'une relation amoureuse. Elle avait bien commencé mais la fin s'est étirée».

«Je suis passé à travers une dépression et j'ai commencé à écrire des pièces», raconte l'artiste en expliquant qu'un«écoeurement d'amour» s'était installé.

Bajada qualifie «Loveshit» «d'autobiographique à 90%» car sur les dix chansons, on retrouve une pièce qui n'est pas lasienne: une version de «You Are a Runner and I am my Father's Son» de Wolf Parade.

Les deux premiers albums de l'artiste, «Puer Dolor» (2005) et «Up Go the Arms» (2006), ont été lancés de manièreindépendante. Lorsqu'on lui demande comment il a évolué depuis la sortie de ses premières galettes, il répond que sadernière création est empreinte de la mélancolie et de la déprime qu'il vivait en raison de sa peine d'amour: «J'avais atteintle fond du baril. Je ne me reconnaissais plus. Ce n'était pas intéressant.»

Par contre, l'expérience fut révélatrice. «C'était la première fois que j'étais capable d'écrire des phrases comme Can't letyou go (NDLR: je ne peux te laisser partir). C'est honnête. C'est direct. Avant, j'aurais dit que c'était quétaine.» Bajadaqualifie donc son nouvel effort de «plus honnête possible».

Est-ce difficile de constamment revenir sur de vieilles blessures en entrevue? «En fait, c'est un document sur une relationqui a eu lieu il y a deux ans». L'artiste dit être maintenant rendu ailleurs et avoir grandi. De cette peine, il en est «sorti dela beauté» et de «l'art», ajoute-t-il.

Ten Days in Miami

Dans le clip de la chanson «Ten Days in Miami», le premier extrait de «Loveshit», on voit Bajada qui arbore un creux, unvide, à la place du cœur. «Je voulais représenter ce qui se passe même si le volume (du clip) est à zéro», dit-il.

Le protagoniste cherche à combler son vide. Les gens autour de lui pensent avoir la réponse mais ne peuvent lui venir enaide.

Lorsqu'on visionne le vidéoclip, on peut penser que c'est la musique qui vient finalement mettre un baume sur les plaies deBajada. «Plusieurs croient ça. Il y a une lumière dans la guitare que l'on voit tout le temps. À la fin, elle éclaire de plus enplus. Le temps a passé», réplique Bajada. Jason Bajada's pain is our gain

For his new album, Montreal singer-songwriter Jason Bajada chose from among 40 songs he wrote about a relationship that wentsour.

“You mean Love’s Hit?” Jason Bajada was being facetious, dancing around the provocative title of hisnew album Loveshit – a document of heartache as raw as anything he has ever written.

“I don’t know if I need to explain that,” the Montrealer said. “It’s pretty self-explanatory. Everyone hasbeen through an écoeurement d’amour and wondered: ‘How can something that started so amazingturn out so destructive, bitter and filled with resentment?’ ”

Sung in warmly whispered tones over gently strummed acoustic guitar (with occasional flourishes ofpiano and strings), Bajada’s tender songs belie their dark themes; each one is loaded with emotionaldevastation. He wrote 40 in all, of which nine were chosen for this album (plus a cover of Wolf Parade’sYou Are a Runner and I Am My Father’s Son).

“They were all about the same woman,” he said, sitting in a St. Viateur St. café on Monday morning,looking out at the falling snow. “Every song was like ammo. There’s a line on (the title track) Loveshit –‘So keep singing me my songs / songs that try to prove you wrong / and keep you from leaving.’ Everysong I was writing, I felt like I could win her back.”

He is in a better place now. The material on Loveshit was written and recorded more than a year ago,that tumultuous relationship now fading into memory. The time since has been spent putting the piecesin place to give what he rightly considers his best album a proper platform to be heard.

So far, so good. The disc was released last week through respected Toronto label MapleMusic. Andafter getting a flurry of attention in 2007 for his 20-gig stint opening for Québécois pop artist Dumas atLe National, Bajada has found new performance allies, opening for Martha Wainwright on several datesin December, and for Brooklyn singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur in January.

He has been taking notes. Seeing Wainwright perform night after night offered insight into how todeliver maximum intensity when playing such personal material over and over.

“My songs were starting to feel like covers at some point,” he said. “It had been over a year, and I wasafraid the record was going to come out and I wasn’t going to feel them anymore.”

One night, he was backstage with Wainwright’s band while she performed Bloody Mother F----ingAsshole, a no-holds-barred song for her father, alone.

“It was always my favourite song,” Bajada said. “It sounds like Dylan, as a woman. I heard the chordsand went to watch her from the side of the stage. She schooled me. She’s been playing that song foryears, and her delivery was perfect. It was so emotional. It felt like she was singing it for the first time,as cliché as that might sound.

“I realized there was something wrong with my show ... . When we got to Quebec City,

I was like, ‘Okay, have a drink, chill out, and really deliver a performance, sing every line and let it takeover.’ ”

It was the finishing touch on a process that had begun during the recording with production duo LesTroublemakers. The pair helped bring Bajada’s music to life more vividly than ever before.

“It was a completely different ball game,” he said.

“They have really varied styles, from Tom Waits to Afro-Cuban; they’re all over the map. But we had thesame references. We listened to Beck’s Sea Change to get the lush, vintage sound. I went alone intothe studio – before, I had worked with a drummer all the time – then we brought people in as needed.

“I got George Denoso (previously) from the Dears and (now) Black Diamond Bay; and Marc-AndréLaroque, who I met through Dumas. ... It’s amazing how just the drums changed the way the bass wasplayed and how I sang everything. We went for that Ringo/Fleetwood Mac dead, dead, dead, deaddrum sound. ... (Suddenly) I could hear myself more, I could just not sing as loud and find thoseintricacies, details in my voice.”

Now that Bajada has hit rock bottom and bounced back, he can’t help but wonder where his inspirationwill come from in the future. He’s not so sure he needs to get his heart broken every time he makes analbum, but this experience should tide him over for a while.

“I still write a lot about that,” he said. “I’m the same person. I’m a sucker for a sad love song. I know the

feeling now. I can channel it instead of mimic it. It’s something I’ve been through.

“It’s weird. I think growing up, it was always an obsession – how come so many songs are aboutheartbreak? How do you either tell a woman you love her or that she’s broken your heart, in a waythat’s never been done before?

“But then, 40 songs came out of this relationship – which is ridiculous, almost pathetic, but fascinating.”

(Québec) Il y avait longtemps ? plus d'un an! ? que l'auteur-compositeurJason Bajada attendait la parution de son troisième album, Loveshit. Il aurafallu presque autant de temps, en fait, que pour oublier la peine d'amour quil'a inspirée. Montréalais de descendance maltaise, né de père francophoneet de mère anglophone, le jeune homme a succombé, à l'adolescence, àl'appel de la guitare. Depuis, il exorcise ses peines en musique. Loveshit,c'est le compte rendu d'un épisode sombre qui risque toutefois de fairebasculer sa vie du côté de la lumière. Le Soleil s'est entretenu cette semaineavec Jason Bajada.

Q Ce doit être excitant de voir ton album enfin paraître?

R Surtout que ça fait longtemps que j'attends! L'album était terminé à l'été2007. J'ai passé la dernière année à bâtir la bonne équipe et à trouver lesbonnes personnes afin de donner à cet album l'attention qu'il mérite.

Q Quand on fait tout tout seul depuis si longtemps, ce doit

être soulageant d'avoir des gens autour de soi qui appuient son projet. Surtout quand il s'agit de boîtes réputées comme Maple Music au Canada anglaiset Audiogram au Québec...

R C'est quelque chose qui aide, c'est sûr. Ça fait du bien de déléguer un peu. Mais quand on a l'habitude de tout superviser, on devient un peu controlfreak. On se demande constamment si les gens font leur travail... On saute rapidement sur le e-mail!

Q Une rupture douloureuse a influencé l'écriture de Loveshit. Comment vis-tu le fait d'être constamment replongé dans ces émotions?

R Au début, il y a un an, c'était très drainant. Ça fait maintenant drôle d'en parler. C'était un amour vraiment intense, le genre de truc qui culbute lesémotions. C'est sûr qu'avec l'album qui sort, un an après la rupture et la dépression, on se replonge là-dedans... Mais à quelque part, c'est bon. Sinon,c'est la performance qui va en souffrir. Les gens sentent quand ce n'est pas vrai. (...) C'est le métier le plus drôle au monde. On parle de notredépression, et les gens nous applaudissent, nous ovationnent, nous demandent de signer des autographes.

Q S'ils le font, c'est peut-être parce qu'ils se reconnaissent dans ces histoires qui, même si elles sont personnelles, ont quelque chose d'universel...

R Et c'était le plus grand challenge de cet album-là! Je savais que j'allais documenter des histoires hyperpersonnelles auxquelles je donnerais un sonpropre. Surtout, je voulais pouvoir assumer totalement le produit final. Je voulais absolument être fier. Ce n'est pas le premier album qui parlait de cettesauce-là. C'est pourquoi je le voulais le plus unique possible.

Q Il y a quelque chose de très authentique dans cet enregistrement, quelque chose de très brut aussi dans cette pop-folk minimaliste. Tu n'as pascherché à enjoliver...

R En fait, je voulais que les défauts ressortent. En ce sens-là, les Troublemakers, mes réalisateurs, ont fait un travail exceptionnel. Ils sont parvenus àrendre l'âme des chansons. Il arrive que la guitare ou la batterie soient super croches et on les a laissées comme ça. On voulait garder l'esprit desalbums de Tom Waits et des Beatles. Le but, ce n'était pas de viser les radios commerciales avec ce disque. Je voulais qu'on sente la peine, lamélancolie, que ce soit chaleureux en même temps que réconfortant.

Q Tu t'es donc vraiment mis à nu...

R Juste avec le titre, je n'ai pas essayé de passer par 10 000 chemins... Il n'y a rien qui ne soit pas arrivé dans ce couple-là. En même temps, ç'adonné des textes dont je suis extrêmement fier parmi les plus poétiques que j'ai faits.

Q Es-tu de ceux qui approchent l'écriture comme une thérapie?

R Pas vraiment. Je ne pense pas que la musique m'a sauvé au niveau thérapeutique. En fait, ce n'est certainement pas la chanson qui m'a sauvéparce que je faisais déjà ça avant cette période-là. Ce qui est certain, c'est que je ne sais pas ce que j'aurais fait si je n'avais pas écrit Ten Days in Miami.C'est la pièce qui a ouvert la voie aux autres.

Q Bien que, jusqu'à maintenant, tu aies eu la chance d'ouvrir pour des artistes tels que Martha Wainwright et Joseph Arthur, tu as maintenant l'occasionde monter ton propre spectacle. On t'a vu dans toutes les formules, solo, trio, groupe... Laquelle préfères-tu?

R Sur le spectacle que je suis en train de monter pour Montréal, il y a cinq musiciens. C'est une formule que j'aime beaucoup et ce sont des musiciensque j'adore et qui m'inspirent. Des musiciens dont je suis fan aussi. Je trouve ça incroyable de jouer avec eux. Ils me font paraître meilleur.

Q Tu es déjà venu quelques fois à Québec et la réaction a toujours été très bonne...

R Et je serai de retour une fois de plus en mars avec Dany Placard! N'importe quelle occasion qui m'est donnée de jouer à Québec et j'embarque! Il y aune histoire d'amour entre Québec et moi. Le public est tellement généreux... Je suis emballé de venir à toutes les fois!

Quelques jours avant la Saint-Valentin, le Québécois Jason Bajada

lance "Loveshit" un album qui arrive à point nommé pour ceux et

celles qui vivent ou qui ont vécu des moments difficiles sur le plan

sentimental.

Le jeune artiste présente dix titres, des ballades et aussi des chansons avec des influences

rock, folk et country, pour son troisième album.

Bajada a reconnu avoir un certain penchant pour les chansons "tristes" et "mélancoliques". Mais sa

musique, qui rappelle un peu certaines mélodies des années '60, donne aussi espoir.

Le chanteur montréalais a obtenu la complicité du duo de réalisateurs "Les Troublemakers" pour

pondre ce nouvel opus.

La vidéo du premier extrait de l'album, "Ten days in Miami" traite spécifiquement de la solitude d'un

coeur brisé.

Cette vidéo est présentement en rotation sur MuchMoreMusic.

Bajada a déjà fait les premières parties des tournées de Martha Wainwright, Joseph Arthur, Dumas et

Robert Charlebois en présentant ses chansons pendant une vingtaine de minutes.

Le nouveau CD de l'auteur-compositeur et interprète a été propuit par MapleMusic Recordings à la

suite d'une entente récente .

Jason Bajada avait lancé deux autres albums " Puer Dolor" et "Up go the arms", sous étiquette

indépendante.
