From the principal... anks to a patent granted 81 years today, you likely did not
brush your teeth this morning with hog’s hair. In 1937, Wallace Carothers, an employee at DuPont, received a patent for a synthetic polymer called nylon. One year later, the rst commercial use of nylon was in the form of nylon-bristled toothbrushes. Until that point, the bristles of toothbrushes were made with animal hair – o en hog’s hair. A few years later, the use of nylon greatly expanded due to extensive use during World War II in items like parachutes, parachute cords, tires, tents, and ponchos. So if you fall into the category of people that prefer not to clean their teeth with animal hair (and I suspect most of us do not), today is a day to celebrate.
