AVIS D’EXPERTS DE L’AFTES GT9/AFTES’ EXPERT’ REPORT - WG No. 9
220 M TUNNELS ET ESPACE SOUTERRAIN - n°225 - Mai/Juin 2011
sible / joint hydroexpansif.
Les possibilités de mise en œuvre de
ces joints sont définies ci-après :
• Simple barrière d’étanchéité avec un
des trois joints :
- Joint compressible
- Joint mixte
- Joint hydroexpansif
• Double barrière d’étanchéité en
associant deux joints :
- Joint compressible associé à un
joint hydroexpansif
- Joint compressible associé à un
autre joint compressible
La double barrière est généralement
mise en œuvre lorsque le tunnel est
foré dans un terrain aquifère, présen-
tant des pressions hydrostatiques plus
ou moins importantes.
Reminder of the waterproofing prin-
ciple for bored tunnel segments.
These joints are used in bored tun-
nels where the casing takes the form
of prefabricated concrete segments.
Three types of joints can be used to
provide this relative waterproofing:
• Compressible elastomer joint
• Hydroexpansive joint
• Combined joint associating a
hydroexpansive material with a
compressible joint, generally added
to the compressible joint “table”.
These joints can be used either
alone, in principle next to the upper
surface of the segment, or in asso-
ciation, generally using a compressi-
ble joint / hydroexpansive joint.
The installation possibilities for these
joints are defined below:
• Single waterproofing barrier with
one of three joints:
- Compressible joint
- Combined joint
- Hydroexpansive joint
• Double waterproofing barrier asso-
ciating two joints:
- Compressible joint associated
with a hydroexpansive joint
- Compressible joint associated
with another compressible joint
The double barrier is generally used
when the tunnel is being bored
through water-bearing soil presen-
ting more or less important levels of
hydrostatic pressure.

2 - Essais laboratoire et-chantier test-
enceinte climatique durant 100 jours
à 110°C.
Après cette durée de vieillissement et
conformément aux recommandations
de l’AFTES (T.O.S n°151) les caracté-
risations suivantes du joint après vieil-
lissement ont été vérifiées :
• Force de réaction moyenne après
336 heures (eau pH 7) : 296 N
• Force de réaction moyenne après
336 heures (eau pH 12) : 127 N
caoutchouc,
• Application de la colle mastic dans
l’engravure à l’aide d’un pistolet
manuel, en un cordon de 6 à 8 mm
d’épaisseur,
2 - Laboratory tests and-operational test-
In compliance with the procedure
established for the issuing of an
expert assessment, the following
tests were carried out:
a) Testing of AFTES recommendations
concerning “the waterproofing of
segment tunnels using hydrophilic
swelling joints – Evaluation proce-
dures and quality control of joints”
- TOS no. 151 in 1998.
b) Carrying out of an operational test in
the STRADAL de BEAUCAIRE plant.
This operational test took place in
the presence of commission repre-
sentatives on 18 May 2010.
2.1 - Additional laboratory tests
The additional tests requested by the
“AFTES expert assessment” com-
mission of Work Group no.9 essen-
tially concerned the behaviour of the
joint following accelerated ageing
over a 100 day period at 110°C.
The test procedure is given in T.O.S
no.151 dated 1998.
The joint samples were first conditio-
ned by 10 cycles of:
• 3 days of swelling in town supply
water at an ambient temperature,
• 4 days of drying in the open air at
an ambient temperature.
The samples were then placed in a
climatic condition reproducer for 100
days at 110°C.
Following this ageing period and in
compliance with AFTES recommen-
dations (T.O.S no.151), the following
characterisations of the joint after
ageing were verified:
• Average reaction power after 336
hours (water pH 7): 296 N
• Average reaction power after 336
hours (water pH 12): 127 N
• Waterproofing test: measurement
of the maximum leak pressure: for
the two tests carried out at 11.5 to
13.5 bars.
2.2 - Operational test
The operational test was carried out
with assistance from Chantiers
Modernes Rhônes-Alpes, lead con -
tractor of the Group responsible for
the extension of line B of the Lyon
metro in Oullins.
It took place on 18 May 2010 in the
STRADAL prefabrication factory in
Beaucaire.
The installation test was carried out
as from 14h20 by a PDT demonstra-
tor.
The BLACKSWELL joint takes the
form of a prefabricated frame with its
corners vulcanised in the factory. The
length of the tested frame was that
of a standard segment with a 9.40 m
perimeter.
The installation procedure was as
follows:
• Spreading of the frame to release
internal tension resulting from folds
in the rubber,
• Application of the mastic glue in
the chase, using a manual pistol, in

TUNNELS ET ESPACE SOUTERRAIN - n°225 - Mai/Juin 2011
• Etalement du cordon à la spatule
pour former un film uniforme dans
l’engravure,
caoutchouc,
• Application de la colle mastic dans
l’engravure à l’aide d’un pistolet
manuel, ou à commande assistée
électrique ou pneumatique,
• Utilisation d’une canule adaptée à

the form of a 6 to 8 mm wide bead,
• Spreading of the bead using a
spatula to create a uniform film in
the chase,
• Installation of the frame joint,
beginning with the positioning of
the four vulcanised corners,
• Repositioning of the joint along
uniform lengths and spreading
using a carpet layer’s type of roller.
The installation of the frame joint,
with a perimeter length of 9.40 m,
took 9 to 10 minutes. After 10 and 30
minutes of gluing, no joint peeling
was noted around the segment cor-
ners. The operational test was judged
to be positive.
Since the operational test carried out
in May 2010, PDT has simplified the
installation of its hydroexpansive
joint, particularly through the use of
a nozzle adapted to the dimensions
of the chase (no more need to spread
the glue). This also means that the
smoothing of the glued joint is no lon-
ger necessary (photos no.6 and 7).
The procedure for installing the
BLACKSWELL joint is as follows:
• Spreading of the frame to release
internal tension resulting from folds
in the rubber,
• Application of the mastic glue in the
chase using a manually, electrically
or pneumatically controlled pistol,
• Use of a nozzle adapted to the
chase to form a uniform film,
• Installation of the frame joint
beginning with the positioning of
the four vulcanised corners,
• Repositioning of the standard
length joint by manual pressure.

228 M TUNNELS ET ESPACE SOUTERRAIN - n°225 - Mai/Juin 2011
enceinte climatique durant 110 jours
à 75°C.
Après cette durée de vieillissement et
conformément aux recommandations
de l’AFTES (T.O.S n°151) les caracté-
ristiques suivantes du joint après vieil-
lissement ont été vérifiées :
• Force de réaction moyenne après 10
jours (eau pH 7) : 835 N
• Force de réaction moyenne après 10
jours (eau pH 12) : 298 N
2.1 - Additional laboratorytests
The additional tests requested by the
Work Group no. 9 “AFTES expert
assessment” commission essentially
concerned the behaviour of the joint
following accelerated ageing over
110 days at 75°C.
The test procedure is given in T.O.S
no.151 issued in 1998.
The joint samples were first conditio-
ned by 10 cycles of:
• 3 days of swelling in town supply
water at an ambient temperature.
• 4 days of drying in the open air at
an ambient temperature.
The samples were then placed in a
climatic condition reproducer for 110
days at 75°C.
Following this ageing period and in
compliance with AFTES recommen-
dations (T.O.S no.151) the following
properties of the joint following
ageing were verified:
• Average reaction power after 10
days (water pH 7) : 835 N
• Average reaction power after 10
days (water pH 12) : 298 N
• Waterproofing test: measurement
of the maximum leak pressure: for
the two tests carried out at 9 to 9.5
bars.
2.2 - Operational test
The operational test was carried out
with assistance from Chantiers
Modernes Rhône-Alpes, lead
contractor of the Group carrying out
the extension to line B of the Lyon
metro in Oullins.
It took place on 21 January 2011 in
the area used to store segments to
be used for the extension to line B of
the Lyon metro. It should be noted
that DE NEEF France had previously
twice tested a SWEALSEAL 3 V joint
in 15 m long rolls on STRADAL ins-
tallations in Beaucaire. As the gluing
of the corners had caused a pro-
blem, it suggested to AFTES that an
official test using the SWEALSEAL 3
V joint in “bracelet” form be carried
out.
The installation test was carried out
as from 15h15 by a DE NEEF
CONCHEM demonstrator.
The SWEALSEAL 3 V joint took the
form of a factory prefabricated “bra-
celet”. The length of the tested
hydroexpansive joint was that of a
standard segment with a 9.40 m
perimeter.
The installation procedure was as
follows:
• Laying out of the “bracelet” to
