The Central Arkansas VeteransHealthcare System (CAVHS), aflagship Department of Veterans Affairs(VA) healthcare provider, is one of thelargest and busiest VA medical centersin the country. Its two hospitals,located in Little Rock and North LittleRock, anchor a broad spectrum of inpatient and outpatient healthcareservices, ranging from disease

prevention through primary care, tocomplex surgical procedures, toextended rehabilitative care.

CAVHS serves as a teaching facility for more than 1,500 students andresidents enrolled in more than 65educational programs; its principalaffiliate is the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

CAVHS is reaching out to Veterans

through its Community-BasedOutpatient Clinics, Home Health CareService Center in Hot Springs, and aVA Drop-In Day Treatment Center for the homeless Veterans in downtownLittle Rock.

Program Goal 

The goal of the CAVHS residency program is toprovide high-quality, compassionatepharmaceutical care in a variety of practiceenvironments. Residents will be able toeffectively educate other health professionals,patients, students, and the communityregarding health care issues. Residents are ex-

pected to develop and apply problem-solving skillsto actual clinical situations through the use of sound judgment, the ability to set priorities and byapplying investigative and research techniques.Residents will function as an integral member of the health care team, demonstrating maturity andeffective interpersonal skills. They willdemonstrate personal drive and enthusiasm to bea leader in pharmacy and to serve as a role modelto others. They will demonstrate high ethicalstandards of professional practice. 

Qualifications

All residents must be United States citizens andhave graduated from an American Council onPharmaceutical Education accredited college or school of pharmacy. All residents are required tobe licensed or be eligible for licensure.License must be obtained no later than Oct1st of the residency year.

Candidates for the Specialty Residencies shouldhave completed a Post Graduate Year One(PGY1) Residency.

Program Description

This residency is a 12 month program designed tomeet the standards set forth by ASHP for Pharmacy Residencies. The Program isorganized under the overall leadership of theChief, Pharmacy Service who is ultimatelyresponsible for the education and training of theresidents. The Education/Quality ManagementCoordinator is designated as the ResidencyProgram Director and acts as the primary role

model for the residents. The Residency Director will designate other pharmacists with outstandingstrengths in one or more areas to serve aspreceptors for individual specialized practicesettings. The training program involves a fulltimeeducational commitment at both divisions of CAVHS for 52 weeks. While residents supplyservices as part of their requirements, these aredesigned to complement rather than compete withthe educational and experiential objectives of theprogram.

Clinical Experience

The resident will participate in the care of patients in ambulatory care, intermediateand long-term care settings . The residentwill staff the Medication Management Clinic(formerly Coumadin Clinic). Electiveexperience is available in many other areaswithin the medical center and may also be

done at affiliated teaching hospitals inareas not encompassed at CAHVS.

Teaching Responsibilities

The resident will be responsible for theeducation of PharmD students from UAMSCollege of Pharmacy as they completesenior rotations at CAVHS and facilitatingthe Therapeutics Recitation course for the

2nd and 3rd year students. CAVHSresidents participate in the TeachingCertificate Program thru UAMS.

Research Requirement 

The resident will conceive, implement, andcomplete an independent research projectin conjunction with a preceptor. The projectwill be presented at either the regional

residents conference or a local conferenceat CAVHS and should result in apublishable paper. Salary and Benefits

The residency program provides a competitivestipend. Residents can accumulate 13 days of paid vacation time and 10 paid holidays per year.Sick leave is accrued at the rate of 4 hours everytwo weeks. Health Insurance is available.Educational leave and an allowance are providedto attend some local and national pharmacymeetings. The program also provides office

space, computer, a pager and a state of the artcomputerized patient record system.

Staffing Requirement 

Residents will also provide weekendinpatient or outpatient pharmacistcoverage. Generally, this is oneweekend a month. Clinical and distributivefunctions typical of a staff pharmacist will

be performed during this time to meet theexpectation of ASHP learning objectives.
