DEditoriaal

Dit nummer van Haec Olim-Collage geeft een overzicht van 25 jaar internatio-

nale werking met vijf Europese scholen. Wij hebben geen weet van een project

dat langer standhoudt, zelfs nog steeds springlevend is. Toen in 1991 de groep

voor het eerst samenkwam bestond er nog geen ‘Comenius’. Er waren alleen

bilaterale uitwisselingen om de talenkennis in Europa te stimuleren. Wij mogen

dus terecht fier zijn om het pionierswerk dat tussen de deelnemende scho-

len is gebeurd: Hattingen, Lincoln, Zaragoza, Sarlat, Schijndel, Tres Cantos en

Brugge. Dat is een voldoende reden om uit de archieven zaken te plukken die

de herinnering aan die fantastische jaren levendig te houden.

Bij dit nummer kreeg ik hulp van Griet De Brul voor het opzoekingswerk en de

selectie van de teksten; Danny Van Tieghem bracht de archieven bij elkaar.

Hartelijk dank vooral aan allen die Rota ‘on the field’ hebben opgebouwd: de

talrijke leerkrachten uit de genoemde scholen en de meer als tweeduizend leer-

lingen die bij het project betrokken waren.

1991Symposium Européen Brugge 10-12 may 1991

Mes Amies,

C’est un très grand honneur pour moi de pouvoir vous souhaiter le bienvenu au Collège Saint Louis à Bruges. J’en suis persuadé que cet heure, cette journée avec vous tous, sera qualifié comme un moment historique. Nous sommes ensemble afin d’échafauder une structure internationale entre écoles secondaires. Je le ressent comme un travail de pionnier.

Pendant les dernières années, Le Collège Saint Louis a organisé plusieurs rencontres internationales. Je veux mentionner les échanges bilatéraux entre des écoles Belges, francophones et néerlandophone, qui continuent à exister. Ces contacts sont le fil rouge de nos rencontres interculturelles : les visiteurs ont presque le même pro-gramme que les élèves de notre école. Suivre les cours dans une autre école est déjà une expérience de XXIl y a deux ans qu’on a essayé une autre formule lors de notre fameux ‘British Day’. Pendant une journée l’école Britannique de Bruxelles, était notre hôte. C’était une journée de discussions très intéressantes. De même notre expériment l’année passée auquel le Gymnasium de Hattingen a participé. Pendant ces trois jours d’approfon-dissement dans la problématique de l’Europe unifié, on a été honoré de la visite de notre ministre de l’éducation, Mr. Coens, et de l’ancien premier ministre M. Leo Tindemans.Comme je le disait tantôt, nous nous trouvons à l’aube d’un nouveau temps. Le monde psychologique de nos élèves s’agrandit. Ils vivent dans un monde beaucoup plus vaste que le nôtre à l’âge de 17 ans. Il est nécessaire de leur apprendre à vivre dans une réalité multiculturelle. Voilà le premier but de notre rencontre. Deuxièmement il faut créer une structure qui nous facilite l’organisation d’un échange. Je crois que le lien d’amitié entre les responsables des diverses écoles, rend plus facile la construction de nos échanges. Notre troisième but doit être de poser les fondement sur lesquelles il soit possible de construire une grande maison européenne. Une maison avec plus que cinq ou six chambres... J’espère que notre organisation sera de sorte que d’autres écoles soient intéressées et désireuses à y participer. L’effet multiplicateur est très important.Je termine en disant que beaucoup de gens ont manifesté une vivante intéresse pour notre projet. D’abord il y a notre Inspecteur Générale de l’Enseignement Catholique dans le diocèse de Bruges. Puis le Ministre de l’Enseignement de la Communauté Flamande, qui lors d’un interview à la radio, a mentionné notre organisation comme exemple d’une dimension européenne au niveau de l’enseignement secondaire. Même la Communauté Européenne a été mis au courant. En mars dernier, des direc-teurs de collèges et de lycées ont tenu un congrès européen à Barcelone. Le repré-sentant de la Communauté, semble-t-il, a invité les responsables à organiser des modèles d’échanges qui soit à la fois multinationales et multiplicateurs. Avec l’aide de l’AFS, j’ai présenté notre rencontre comme exemple d’un tel projet.Mes amis, je vous offre ce verre en espérant que les journées qui vont suivre seront intéressantes en enrichissantes.

In 1989 and 1990, 27 years ago, the Sint-Lodewijkscollege already had some experience with multilateral exchanges. But there were three spe-cific reasons to start a new project:•Wewerelookingforschoolswillingtoorganiseasimilarmultilateral

project themselves, in which we could then participate of course. A bit of a lazy attitude, I know.

•WewantedtomakeaconnectionwithhistoricalcitiesalloverEu-rope.

•Wewantedpartnersreadytoengagetheschoolinaninternationaland intercultural context.

So we found Lincoln, Hattingen, Sarlat and Saragossa on our way. Whenin2000SarlatcouldnotcontinueSchijndelfromtheNetherlandsstepped into the project, and a few years later, in 2002, Saragossa was replaced by Tres Cantos, near Madrid. International cooperation can be one of the highlights in a teacher’s professional career. Organising the Rota week taught us a new meth-odology. Rota is a synonym for creativity. Teachers learn how to be a coach in-stead of an instructor. Rota is a space for experiment. Visiting another school, teachers experience a different school system, sometimes they discover exciting teaching materials and new physical conditions for teaching. One school has a swimming pool, another has a special class room for the arts, or a first class library, or a campus with the greatest diversity, or a strong intellectual tradition, or green surroundings. Dur-ing the many preparation weekends and teachers in resident experi-ments, teachers became each other’s trainees. They talked about their teaching - and as a consequence shortened their nights. They visited their colleagues’ lessons and sometimes were offered the lectern (teach-ing desk).For students Rota broadens the horizon of their minds. International work directs the youngsters towards more autonomy and responsibil-ity. And likewise their nights were shortened during Rota week. During the holidays they agreed to meet up in other countries, preferring the southern countries…!For the school leaders Rota is extremely important. It opens up the school climate, it begets an interest in international approaches of edu-cation and learning. International teacher trainings become very com-mon. A lot of schools of our group received an international award from their government. In November 2015 the Sint-Lodewijkscollege was proclaimed as the Flemish school with the most participations in Come-nius. Thanks to our European curriculum we are now considered the most important CLIL school in our country. The Sint-Lodewijkscollege, as well as the others schools, benefited greatly by its willingness to operate within an international context. Even politicians learn a lot from our experiments. Did you know the Rota concept was copied by the European authorities? In 1996, five years after the foundation and the first meeting in Bruges, the European Council created something called ‘Comenius’! I still remember vividly the trip Johan Delbaere and I made to the Ministry of Education, when Belgium became for six months president of the European Community.

How did we start this Rota connection? The first Rota meeting was or-ganized in Bruges. In 1991 five persons in charge of different schools came together to discuss a long term cooperation. This cooperation continues until today and we have every intention to continue it for many years to come. Even though we had the intention to work side by side with our students, there was only one youngster around the table at the time: the 16 year old son of Bernard Podevin from Sarlat. SarlatwassuggestedbyJoBerten.WithmydeputyheadmasterWillyVerbanck I travelled to Sarlat by car in three days. I also remember there was an unexpected bout of snow, and leaving the school on the hill, I took a wrong exit, an exit with a staircase I couldn’t see because of the snow! Also in those days, Christina Baselga, a Spanish teacher, met with our students in the European centre of Ryckevelde. The con-nection with England came through church authorities. Johan Delbaere, an English teacher at our school, was a member of the oecumenical as-sociation of the dioceses of Bruges, Lincoln and Nottingham. He knew a few people over there and invited David Cox and Andrew Stokes, the Precentor of the Cathedral of Lincoln. The head of Hattingen was well known to us, as we shared a partner school in Visé. So we agreed to organise by turns a meeting for 15 to 20 students from each country. Looking for a name for our association, we tried our knowledge of Latin: Rotatio Europearum Scolarum….. a mouthful that gave us some diges-tive problems. But as David Cox is a distinguished Rotary member in his town, he made the suggestion to simply abbreviate the name to ROTA.During these 25 years the impact of Rota can hardly be underestimated! More than 2000 students were active members of the project. Rota created a strong friendship between teachers from the different coun-tries, and I am very glad that each school sent a delegation of teachers who were active in developing our project to this 25th anniversary. And among the headmasters as well… yes … a friendship for life sprang up between them.Rotaisalreadyafabulousprojectininthehistoryofallourschools.Wemust be grateful to all the teachers and students who has been involved during the last 25 years.

MEDIA WORKSHOP

Dès la connaissance du projet Rota, je n’ai pu refuser la proposition per-mettant une rencontre entre pays européen et une vision de la future unité européenne. Dans ce projet, il y a plusieurs ateliers ou thèmes dont le « Média workshop ».Le groupe « Média workshop » englobe les activités journalistiques, ra-diophoniques et vidéographiques. Les caractéristiques me poussant à m’inscrire sont les moyens technique mis à notre disposition, le besoin absolu de parler une langue étrangère et l’imagination me mettant dans la peau d’un grand journaliste.Grace à des sponsors, nous avons à notre service des ordinateurs, des caméscopes et un professionnel nous donnant des conseils et une radio locale nous prêtant quelques minutes d’écoute.En conclusion, les activités du groupe « Média workshop » sont le moyen de conjuguer les domaine linguistiques et les domaines techniques.

THE CULTURAL EVENING

Last night’s cultural evening proved to be most interesting and en-tertaining, with each country producing excellent standards of work. Different methods of presenting each country’s culture and way of life were used which added to the variety of the evening. The au-dience appeared to be watching with great interest and the mood after the presentations made it evident that everyone was enjoy-ing themselves. This sense of enjoyment was also shown through the audience’s involvement in clapping to songs and tunes and the high levels of applause during the evening. It was obviously difficult for many people to understand some of the presentations since the majority of each one, if not all of it was presented using the mother tongue. This shouldn’t have posed too much of a problem though, since from the slides and pictures shown, it was mostly obvious what was being said.

De vier heren van CORVI zijn instrumentale virtuozen en zijn absoluut niet te missen in het genre dat wij voor het gemak “musicomedy” hebben gedoopt.Boccherini op een xylofoon, een accordeon uit een Italiaanse film, een eenzame tuba: een kwartet om u tegen te zeggen. De muziek is de kapstok waarvan de wat getroubleerde verhoudingen tussen de heren worden opgehangen. Zonder woorden, maar met een gees-tige mimiek en de vaardigheid van een heuse sneltekenaar wordt er zeer veel verteld.Slapstick, cartoon, grappige personages – kortom beschaafd enter-tainment dat stilaan zijn plek krijgt op de podia.

REACTIE OP DE VOORSTELLInG

Tuesday evening’s performance of Corvi was very successful. It was a perfect example of doing something to laugh with without having the language problems. The faces of the musical comedians were tremendous. I thought they had a congenital disorder or something but at the end, when they took off their hats, they were completely normal. They also interacted with the public and personally I think the joke with the deputy headmaster with his little klaxon was one of the best. The drawings were marvellous and of course the music was very good too. So, to make it short, I liked it, it was very good humour and I hope I’ll see them again sometime.

IMAGE-MIRAGE

Aujourd’hui le groupe “image-mirage” s’est lancé dans une expérien-ce amusante mais tout à la fois sérieuse. Ils sont par groupe de deux à quatre personnes et ils étudient des bandes-dessinées d’Asterix dans une langue étrangère. C’est un bon moyen de dialoguer. Mais le groupe « image-mirage » est chargé d’une chose très importante : ils rétablissent la vérité quand un pays à une fausse image d’un autre pays. C’est pour cette raison que beaucoup d’allemands sont inscrit dans le groupe. Ces activités sont très intéressantes, le groupe a déjà fait la visite d’un musée. Avec une ambiance formidable le groupe ne peut que s’épanouir. On arrive à l’aboutissement de Rota-semaine et le groupe « image-mirage » est une réussite.

Today, the politics group was working with Ludo Goderis, a freelance Flemish cartoonist who was showing them how to draw cartoons! However the cartoons were more than just Tom and Jerry, they were satirical cartoons designed to display young people’s views of poli-ticsinEurope.Wesawexamplesoftypicalstereotypingoftraditionaldress, for example the Germans in Lederhosen and the French wea-ring berets, and also in culture with the British snobbery and Spanish bull fighting as well as the parody of the contradictions within Euro-pean politics. As we can see, these budding young politicians will try their hand at anything.

De internationale congresweek heeft plaats onder de titel ‘Rota’, een originele vinding van het Sint-Lodewijkscollege. Rota betekent draai-beweging en slaat op het beurtelings organiseren van de congresweek door elk van de partners. Brugse jongeren zullen de komende vier jaar telkens in een ander land verblijven. Hoofdbedoeling is zich te confron-teren met een vreemde cultuur en terzelfdertijd na te denken omtrent een globaal thema. Dit jaar luidt dit “De stad als smeltkroes voor cul-turen”. Daarbij wordt telkens vertrokken van een concrete invalshoek: economische, politieke, culturele en literaire producties. Een media-groep, samengesteld uit leerlingen van alle participerende landen, zal het gebeuren verslaan via de radio, een videofilm en de geschreven pers. De zwaartepunten in het programma zijn de toespraak op 25 fe-bruari van Europarlementslid Jaak Vandemeulebroucke over ‘Het Euro-pa der Volkeren’, op 26 februari heeft ere-rector H. Brugmans het over ‘Europa en het Oosten’ en tenslotte is er op vrijdag 28 februari ‘Het Eu-

ropa na Maastricht’ door Europarlementslid Fernand Herman. Culturele hoogtepunten worden dan wellicht 24 en 25 februari. Op maandag 24 februari presenteert elke delegatie 30 minuten een programma over de eigen culturele accenten. Dinsdag 25 februari treedt het humoristisch gezelschap “Corvi” op met een muzikale slapstick.Het is de bedoeling van Rota om een steeds verder uitdeinende groep te worden. Elke groep die bij de start betrokken was, zou na verloop van tijd de motor moeten worden van een nieuwe groep. Via diverse vormen van communicatie worden de groepen met elkaar in contact gebracht. In de grote schoolvakantie die volgt op het project worden individuele vakantie-uitwisselingen georganiseerd. Media groups visit to ‘The Lincolnshire Echo’

After an exhausting walk down ‘Steep Hill’, the group arrived at the Echo offices awaiting a tour from ‘Reg’. After a brief collective photo session, we climbed four flights of stairs to begin our tour in the ad-vertising department. From there we proceeded through the accoun-tants’ section and then to the reporters’ and editors’ area. Following this, we were shown how a newspaper was put together, printed and distributed. It was a very interesting experience.

Le groupe environnement

La semaine a commencé par l’analyse de l’eau de chaque rivière de pays représentes cette semaine a Lincoln. Les résultats Français ont été négatifs : la Garonne est polluée. Mardi, visite de la « National Rivers Authority » : il s’agit d’un laboratoire d’analyse de pollution. Il y a 20 stations, chacune faisant 25 analyses de prélèvement par jour et par station. Dans l’après-midi, vérification des tests fait la veille.

ROTA visits Liverpool

Yesterday the ROTA group went to Liverpool. Arriving at school at 7.30 a.m., everyone’s faces reflected the previous night’s frivolities! After a three hour coach journey, we approached Liverpool. The Townscape group were the first to be reluctantly thrown off the bus in to the bitter cold wind, to visit the city’s Cathedrals. The other groups went to the “Beatle’s Experience”, and ended the morning shopping.After dinner, all the groups went on the ‘Ferry across the Mersey’, which proved to be a very ‘moving’ experience! (A little English joke!) In the free time following, the Townscape group had a chance to go to the “Beatle’s Experience”, whilst the others strolled around the Albert Docks.In the evening, we were entertained by “Sir” Ed Korolyk’s band, which proved to be extremely popular.

GASTRONOMY

The main aim of the Gastronomy group is to prepare and cook the menu for the meal on Thursday evening. The menu is to remain secret until then. There will be seven courses and two wines. The group prepare one section of the meal every day. This involves not being able to work the computers and wearing ridiculous hats. It also means to involve being female as there are only three boys in the group.The meal will be cooked in the school kitchen.The entire group finds the work interesting. The English and Germans think that the meal will be difficult to prepare while the French say it will be easy. The Spanish agree with the French, except for the preparation of the “foi gras”. The Belgians claim that they simply cannot cook and therefore any meal would be difficult to prepare. Overall, people seem to be having more problems with the computers at this stage than with the food.However, the menu looks very good and should be delicious on Thursday night.

REPORTAGE ATELIER THEATRESous la direction de Monsieur Loubet, la troupe répète toute la jour-née dans la salle du théâtre de Saint Joseph.Elle travaille à l’élaboration d’un spectacle de mime qui sera pré-senté vendredi soir à l’ancien théâtre de Sarlat. Le décor et les cos-tumes ont été réalisés sous la conduite de Mademoiselle Delmas Saint-Hilaire.Pour éviter les barrières qu’auraient créés les langues, les mime a été choisi comme moyen d’expression. Le but de ce spectacle est, outre le fait qu’il permet aux participants de s’exprimer sur scène, d’amener des jeunes de pays différents à se connaître en travaillant sur un même projet.

LA SALIDA DEL GRUPO DE MEDIO AMBIENTELa salida estaba prevista para la una y media, pero se retraso media hora. Por fin, todos en el microbus, recorrieron los 30 kilometros que les separaban de su destino : la fabrica de papel y la granja.Un conferenciante dio una charla sobre los temas que mas interesa-ban al grupo: Ecologia, estructuracion y funcionamiento de la fabri-ca papelera... se repartieron unos auriculares para poder escuchar correctamante las explicaciones que les daba. Para completar las visita pusieron un video. Como final de la salida, se dio lugar a un turno de preguntas con las que se saciaron las curiosidades de los asistentes.Llegamos al collegio a las cinco para preparar la actuacion interna-cional.

EDITORIALDeze week heerst er in ons college een andere sfeer, ik zou zeggen, een nieuwe geest die zelfs de zon doet schijnen en ons hart verwarmt.Hij heet Vriendschap en is krachtig genoeg om de taalgrenzen te over-schrijden, om jongeren die toch zo verschillend zijn tot een eenheid te versmelten.Een geest die van ieder mens een wereldburger maakt en ons helpt Rijk Gods te verwezenlijken, een Rijk dat geen grenzen kent en waar alles universeel en harmonieus is.Een voorbode van het Pinksterfeest hier deze week in Sarlat

My impressions of the ROTA weekThis week has been a valuable insight into the lifestyles of different countries. As all the participants are European I thought that the culture would be much the same but when I arrived I noticed that people be-have and act completely differently than to in England.This comes as a shock at first and it makes you feel very awkward, but the host families make you feel very welcome and soon you feel at home.The trips to sites of interest around Sarlat have been both interesting and informative. They have been made even better by the beautiful warmandsunnyweatheronTuesdayandWednesday.The week has been very tiring, mostly because of the difficulty in trying to communicate in so many different languages. Also, the journey here took a long time to recover from.However, all in all, ROTA III has gone very well and has been an enjoy-able week for all the participants.

My impressions of the ROTA weekI think everybody has worked hard this week: the students in the work-shops, the host families for accommodating us into their lifestyles and putting themselves to a lot of trouble for us and not least the teachers, both of this school and the four visiting schools for putting so much ef-fort into ROTA III before and during the week.I also think everybody has got a lot out of it: the ability to work in a team, especially in a team with five different nationalities in it, is proba-bly one of the most valuable things to come out of ROTA III.There has also been the lighter side of ROTA shown throughout the week with lots of laughter, singing and the making of new friends. At first for a lot of people I think there was a communication problem, especially with host families and teachers, but as the week progressed and everybody’s ears got tuned to the French language, most people could at least understand the general ideas of what was being said, even if they could not understand every word.I think we all should thank the French for being so patient with us when we find it hard to understand them (and when we have tried to practice our French!!).All in all, ROTA III, in this beautiful (and warm!!) town of Sarlat, has been an experience that I, for one, will never forget. The school and the people of Sarlat have been very kind and helpful and the students of all five countries have made strong friendships which will carry on beyond ROTA III.I hope we have all learned the importance of good European relations. I think more schools should have projects like ROTA as the future of Europe lies with our generation.

Nowadays, music is said to be “cool” and “an easy way to make friends”, so we took a look into the world of music and movement.Whenwecame into themusic room,wewereallamazedaboutthe conversation the musicians had without words. The things they have already achieved as a tight group in such a short time is astonishing. Each and every one of the members has heaps of talent. The group is working on improvisations of the Eurovision song which will be presented together with the movement group on Friday night. The dancers are now improvising dance to lots of different kinds of music and have a lot of enthusiasm for it.

DRAMA AND PANTOMIMEDARK AnD MySTERIOuS

The assembly hall looked dark and strange when we entered with pen, paper and camera. The actors try to lay stress on hands and feet, by using black-lights and white straps and gloves. For Friday they are going to interpret some poems from all different nations participating in ROTA. The meaning of this ROTA project quickly became clear when the actors had problems communicating. So instead of words, they used their hands, feet and everything they could possibly lay their hands on.

After some conversation problems, because Dieter can’t speak English very well, two of us joined the Ruhr-Area group on their excursion. The rest of us wrote some articles about our trip and the first meeting with the host families. After the real journalism started, we rushed through thehallsandbargedintotheworkshops.Whilewewereplayingjour-nalists, some of us stayed in the computer-room to lay-out our first issue. The atmosphere is comfortable and really feel at ease.

So what is E-Mail? Many people are under the impression that it is too technical to understand but this is not so as I have discovered this week. Not only it is possible to obtain and send out messages to all the other ROTA schools, it is also possible to gain access to 5 million computers around the world. The information is sent from the server computer to the receiver computer via the MODEM and telephone lines. This infor-mation is decoded by the MODEM so that it can be understood by the user.

This workshop gives a possibility to connect complicated technology with creative work. First the members of this group had to create a spe-cial shape on which they painted for example a house, a face, … . Then they established a special technology called “Flip-Flop”. This is a thinga-mabob with some wires and two coloured lights which are flashing alternately. Finally they use this construction as decorative badges.

Rota II – 1997-2001Met de tweede cyclus van Rota gaan we het derde millennium in. Daar-om luidt de titel ‘Beyond the year 2000: change and continuity’.Het jaar 2000 wordt spontaan als een breukjaar aangevoeld. In het verleden deden zich allerhande millenarische fenomen voor. Het jaartal heeft de waarde van een evaluatiemoment voor het verleden en tegelijk een extreme verwachting van een totaal nieuwe toekomst. Men kan zich dus de vraag stellen of en wat er gaat veranderen in het derde millennium. Daarop wil Rota II zich focussen.Uit de vele invalshoeken hebben de leerkrachten van Brugge gekozen voor de studie van het landschap als test-case voor de veranderingen en de continuïteit. Inderdaad, niets is ‘conservatiever’ als de kavels in de landbouwgrond, en toch is gedurende de laatste vijftig jaar ook niets zo drastisch veranderd als het landschap waarin we leven.In een aantal workshops worden die veranderingen nauwer bekeken. De groep Economics bekijkt het landschap als de drager van de econo-mische activiteiten. De inplanting van industrie, de opbouw van ver-keersinfrastructuur, het niveau in welvaart, de nabijheid van een haven, … het zijn zovele facetten van de verandering. De concrete casus zal zijn hoe de verkoopscentra zich ontwikkelen.In Literature bestudeert men de invloed van het landschap op de lite-raire productie. Brugge wordt bestudeerd vanuit de literaire bronnen uit de diverse deelnemende landen. Tegelijk worden de wederzijdse invloeden van de talen op het semantische veld van de topografie on-derzocht.Arts zal het landschap in diverse kunstuitingen (schilderkunst, film, fo-tografie, muziek) benaderen. Men zal een poging doen om een Brugs

stadslandschap te schilderen in de diverse stijlen die elk van de deelne-mende landen hebben ontwikkeld in de loop van de Europese kunstge-schiedenis: beginnend met de primitieven en eindigend in de abstrac-ten.In de workshop Geography zal men vooral laboratoriumwerk verrich-ten. Bodemstalen worden onderzocht en met elkaar vergeleken. Hier wordt vooral veldwerk verricht.Tenslotte zal de groep Media via internet een wereldwijde connectie proberen te maken. Een deelgroep zal de invloed van de media op het denken en doen van de bevolking bekijken. De resultaten zullen tot expressie gebracht worden in een video-installatie. Dezelfde werkgroep is ook verantwoordelijk voor het realiseren van een periodiek over de Rota-dagen.

What was achievedWORKSHOP ARTS

1. Three large mural acrylic paintings and 10 small ones were ready by the end of the ROTA-week. The large murals will be permanently at the Sint-Lodewijkscollege.

2. Six brochures containing quality reproductions of 5 landscape pain-tings from each country were made. The paintings illustrate one ar-tistic style in which their country’s painters excelled, i.e. surrealism for Spain, impressionism for France, art nouveau for Czechia, expres-sionism for Germany, Flemish Primitivism for Belgium, David Hock-ney/Turner for Britain. The reproductions in the brochure are large (20 x 30 cm) because they can then be shown and used in classes. The brochures were copied and sent to all partners. Textual com-

ment were added on themes, the style and the techniques used in landscape painting. This involved some theoretical work and study. The texts can be in your own language, although Czechs and Belgi-ans are advised not to do so. These brochures should be sent to the partner-schools by the end of January.

Didactic value- The preparation was done in arts lessons of the 4th form- More pupils could thus be involved in the preparatory stages- The brochure can be used in arts lessons- The mural is a contribution to the hosting school and is provided

with didactic information in the process of creation.

WORKSHOP MEDIA

The workgroup media was separated in two groups 1) working with video- A video compilation of TV-programs (intro from the news, sports ma-

gazine, … etc.) was made.- A video letter of between 5-10 minutes was made.- A script was developed on the following theme: “How can images

help to create a better world?”. Every country wrote a story-board in a different language.

The processes of making the film were laid down in a day-too-day script useful for future recordings.

2) working with internet- A ROTA-homepage and internet site were developed by the partici-

pants.

WORKSHOP EnVIROnMEnT

- This workshop spotted the evolution of our landscape and human intervention on the landscape. Models for a future line of environ-mental behaviour in order to safeguard the environment for future generations were developed and were already used in French field-work.

- Useful research on urban development by means of old maps and photographs was done. Soil maps and maps on functional distri-bution of space were drawn up in order to give a good idea of the regions compared.

- Results were processed and published in a report with recommen-dations for a better environment. The report was displayed in an exhibition on the night of presentations.

WORKSHOP LITERATuRE

- This workshop generated comparative translations of ware poets in each language. These translations were dramatized on the night of the presentations and will be published in the survey brochure.

- A useful comparative list of literary works on Bruges and Flemish land/townscape has been drawn up. The books were studied by the participants.

- Pupils co-operated in writing a literary diary with impressions on Flemish landscape.

WORKSHOP SOCIO-ECOnOMICS

- This workshop studied urban landscapes in order to determine wealth and purchasing power within the region.

- The workshop drew up a plan and a map of a shopping street ( a main and by-street) of Bruges.

- The workshop developed comparative statistical materials on wealth (how the citizens/youngsters spend their salary on several products in each country). The statistical materials were worked into diagrams which were displayed at the presentation and will be published in the survey brochure.

COMMEnTS OF PARTICIPAnTS:

Several Germans were sure that the week had developed team-work “working with lots of different nationalities”, while a Belgian was convinced that the ROTA week had helped him/her learn about “helping/starting projects”. One British student observed drily that he thought ROTA will have sparked a development of his letter-wri-ting skills, while another is encouraged to find out how she might be able to visit her new friends in the holidays. A Dane commented that: “being an exchange student opened my mind to other cultures and I have always found different people interesting.”A Spaniard felt his/her attitude to other people had been trans-formed by “eliminating prejudices and bringing us closer to new cultures and new forms of understanding life”.

Report on the Rota food workshop

During the Rota week I participated in the food workshop. This involved designing and making your own cake and a box for it to be stored in. To help us with this assignment excursions were made to the local super-market where we were given a talk about manufacturing novelty cakes and the ingredients needed to make them. Later in the week everyone participating in Rota visited York and assign-ments were given to each group. For the food workshop this involved finding where foods on the market originated from and what weight they were sold in. Also students were given the opportunity to visit small supermarkets in the centre. I greatly enjoyed participating in this week and hope to be involved in European integration in the future.

The games eveningThursday

On the Thursday evening of ROTA a games evening, organised by Miss Leigh, was held in the main hall in order to test the wits of the six different nationalities against each other on topics such as European flags, famous people and world currencies. Each country was divided into two teams with the aim of totalling their two scores together producing a grand total and thus a winning country. At the end of the first few rounds it was the Danish teams which were lea-ding, closely followed by the Germans and the Belgians.Then came the more light hearted rounds such as dancing to music (international of course!) and games of Twister. Finally we had a Eu-rovision Song Contest style karaoke competition which was won in superb fashion by the British team’s rendition of “Great balls of fire”. At the end of e very enjoyable evening it was the German team that finally took the honours.

SINT-LODEWIJKSCOLLEGEBRUGGESaint-Louis. Our school was founded in 1834. It was the first college in the heart of Bruges. The catholic boys’ school soon developed into a highly res-pected college, where all kinds of subjects are taught, from Greek to eco-nomics and from biology to sports. Also the possibilities for extra – cur-ricular activities for students apart from the lessons grew. The presi-dium is an initiative from and for the students. All kinds of groups come out with the most creative ideas. The culture-group shows off with their free stage, the social-group kicks off with a concert, the newspaper brings out hot gossip and hilarious articles and nature entertains other students with a lot of workshops. Top snooker yesterday, not only in the Crucible in Sheffield, but also in Bruges, where there was an international meeting between Bel-gium and England. The teams consisted out of Mathew Pearce and Paul McCaffrey for England. Dieter Van Marcke defended the honour of Belgium as well as your humble reporter.Belgium broke off and Van Marcke unfortunately potted the cue ball. England at the table with Paul McCaffrey to pot the first red. A period of safety play had arrived. Yours sincerely mishit a red, and the En-glish team got the possibility to build a break.The Belgian team needed three snookers, with only the Brown, Blue, Pink and Black left on the table. A bad safety shot by Dieter Van Marcke gave the English the opportunity to finish the match. Mathew potted the Brown, missed the Blue, but we conceded.The pot of the day though, was made by the outstanding Joachim Verplancke (still your humble reporter) who potted a ball situated next to the balk line and against the cushion over two cushions and over the entire width of the table into the lower left corner. A small spark of light in a period of darkness for Belgian snooker.

Our views on the workshopsVIDEO

The room of the cineasts. Eleven o’clock. People are sitting around the table,listeningtotheirteacher(=theartistKarenVanderborght).Wat-ching some video fragments. The engaged teacher wrote the theoretical parts of their work with the camera on a blackboard. For us, it seemed to be very schoolish.Fortunately, this is only one part of their workshop. Every morning they look to the videotape which they’ve made the day before. Then they have the theoretical part, and every day they focus on a new subject. Today they specialized themselves on movements. So, they watched a fragment of “les glaneurs et la glaneuse”. They discussed a bit about the camera movement and the fragments they saw.In the afternoon they occupy themselves with the real filming work by using their knowledge of the morning. Michiel van Cauwelaert (the artist of the workshop), how do you define “scenography”?In a theatre you have a big scene, expressing mostly texts. So with sce-nography we try to translate those texts into different kind of colours, forms and materials.Why did you accept the offer to come to this project?Well, I’malwaysworking inprojects of twoor threemonths.A fewmonths ago they asked me to participate in this project and I agreed

because I had spare time for this week and I really like to work with young people.What do you want to teach during this week?I don’t want to teach anything. I just want the participants to learn to interpret poems and express themselves in colours, forms, … .What do you feel like to work with different nationalities?Great! They are very enthusiastic. Especially the Czech people are very creative, but the others too!

Why did you accept the offer to take part of this project?I always say “yes” in my professional career. Every day of my if is dif-ferent, because I engage in different, special projects. I think that pupils or all young people should get the opportunity to participate in projects, because my generation and me, we had also such an opportunity and it helped us. That is why I want every generation to get such a chance and because of this I decided to take part in this project.Do you work often with young people?Not that much. I taught till two years ago. I have not been working with young people for two years now. So it was really time to do such a project involving young people. I want to pass on my knowledge in the hope that the next generation keeps on doing that and the chain never ends. I do believe I have something to say to young people and this was a great occasion to do so.Are the different cultures, and especially the languages interesting to work with or are they more of an obstacle?In this short period of time, the languages cause some problems. So-metimes, you lose time explaining. Or I just can’t find the right words in English to get the message across with the necessary details. I’ve noticed that the students help each other. So they don’t have a problem with it, but sometimes I do.

Do you think the language of music is universal?Yes.WhenIagreedtotakepartinthisprojectIdidnotknowthepeopleI would work with. And so I was not sure which language they would speak. For this reason, I decided to search for songs without text. For example, now we are practising on a song, which is called “The Rain”. This is a song expressing the sound of rain. For this song, language is not an obstacle and there are many songs like that. But this song is also a good opportunity to create a special atmosphere.What can we expect of the performance on Friday and Saturday?Well,we’reperformingagospelsongbecausepeopleaskedforit.Nexton the programme, there’s a piece called “The rain” with a small percus-sion. It consists of sounds from different parts of the world. Again, it’s the translation of a variety of atmospheres in a musical way. The third piece is again a bit experimental with a chorus and all kinds of sounds and texts. And then a Japanese song to finish off the evening. It’s called “Watashi”whichmeans“I”or“Mine”.

Schulprojekte: 7 Joys – 7 SensesNachdem die Schulband den Abend eröffnet hatte, sprach der Schullei-terDr.NiggemanneinigebegrüßendeWorte.Erstelltedieteilnehmen-den Länder aus Belgien, England, den Niederlanden und Polen vor. Alle Schülerinnen und Schüler kamen auf die Bühne und wurden mit Applaus empfangen.Danach gab es ein internationales Büffet. Jedes Land brachte dazu beson-dere Spezialitäten aus der Heimat mit. Alle Teilnehmer genossen die un-terschiedlichen Köstlichkeiten.Nach dem Essen spielte die Schulband erneut. Später wurde ein Spiel durchgeführt, damit sich die Teilnehmer besser kennenlernen konnten. Alle Teilnehmer bekamen ein Memorykarte um einen Interviewpartner zu finden. Im Verlauf des Interviews mussten Fragen über Hobbys, Lieblings-musik, Job Pläne und Ähnliches beantwortet werden.Ende des Spiels wurden die Interviewzettel an eine Stoffwand geklebt, so dass jeder die Gelegenheit hatte die anderen Ergebnisse anzusehen. At the town hallAm Montag wurden alle Teilnehmer im Rathaus herzlich empfangen. Der Bürgermeister Herr Liebig begrüßte alle ausländischen Gäste sehr herzlich. Er verwies auf die Bedeutung der internationalen Be-gegnungen und gab einige Informationen über die Stadt Hattingen.Die Teilnehmer verfolgten den Vortrag des Bürgermeister. Damit alle die Ausführungen verstehen konnten, übersetzte Herr Dr. Nig-gemann in Englisch.Nach dem Vortrag überreichte der Bürgermeister allen Gastschulen einen neuen Videofilm über Hattingen.

A SHORT InTRODuCTIOn OF SOME OF THE EIGHT WORKSHOPS

Painting with waterInthisworkshopwatercoloursandChinesinkwillbeused.Waterwillbebothinspirationandmaterial.Alsodifferentkindsofsurfaceswillbeusedto experiment. Students will work under direction of two artists in a real studio in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The students should have special interest in drawing and painting. During the week they will probably visit an artist and/or museum.

Creative writingUnder direction of two teachers who write poetry themselves the students will find their inspiration in water-related subjects. Using different types of paper, ink and calligraphy they create an album which they will construct themselves in a hand bookbinding-shop in ‘s-Hertogenbosch by the end of the week. Feeling for language as such will come in handy.

Creating a virtual water entertainmentparkAnything can happen in virtual reality, so students can create their own fantasies in this amusementspark. You don’t need to be a genius but you must have more than average computerskills. Two teachers with all the knowledge and equipment needed will assist and instruct.

ScienceThe topic will be the cycle of water. Students will research and create a model for a space-shuttle. They will also launch a small rocket in the end, so their presentation goes ‘booom’. No special skills are needed, just interest in scientific research and experiments.

CookingWorkingwithandunderaprofessionalcookandbakerinaverywellequippedkitchenandbakerymustbechallengeforeveryone.Inaninstitutefor deaf children the students will work together with some deaf children. The students will create a professional dinner, they can make some specialities form their own countries and they’ll learn to prepare some typical Dutch products. Of course, water is a very important ingredient in kitchen recipes as well as in baking recipes. The Dutch and foreign specialities will be served and presented on Friday, presentation-evening.

Rota 2005 in Lincoln (GB)Dass in England tatsächlich laufend Orangenmarmelade konsumiert wird und dass das “original English breakfast” seinen schlechten Ruf nicht ver-dienthat,davonkonntensichinderWochevom13.–19.März16Schü-lerinnen und Schüler unseres Gymnasiums in Lincoln überzeugen.Dies wurde möglich durch ihre Teilnahme am ROTA-Projekt. ROTA steht für Rotation und nach dem Rotationsprinzip findet dieses Treffen jedes Jahr an einer anderen europäischen Schule statt, dieses Mal an der Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School in England. Zu Besuch waren neben der Gruppe aus Hattingen insgesamt 70 Jugendliche aus Spanien, Belgien und Hol-land.ImMittelpunktderWochestanddieZusammenarbeitinverschiedenenin-ternationalbesetztenWorkshops–Kunst,Geschichte,Musik,DramaundNaturwissenschaften.Die Besichtigung der Burg und der Kathedrale Lincolns einschliesslich ei-ner “roof tour” bei herrlichem Sonnenschein, ein “ghost walk” durch die Stadt – nicht wirklich gruselig, da ebenfalls bei herrlichem Sonnenschein – und der Besuch des Holocaust CentreBeth Shalom in Laxton (Notting-hamshire) waren die Höhepunkte des Geschichtsworkshops.Die Naturwissenschaftler erprobten forensische Methoden zur Aufklärung eines fiktiven Mordfalls: DNA-Analyse, Haaranalyse, genetischer Finger-abdruck und Blutgruppenvergleich.Künstler, Musiker und Schauspieler beeindruckten am letzten Abend die Zuschauer durch ein Stück, das geprägt war durch die phantasievoll ge-staltete Dekoration und ausgefallene Masken, selbstkomponierte Sam-barhythmen und beeindruckende Körpersprache.

Neben der “Arbeit” standen aber auch andere Dinge auf dem Pro-gramm, so z.B. ein Besuch in York - wir bestaunen hier die fantas-tischen Glasfenster des York Minster -, ein Ceilidh ( traditioneller schottischer Folk-Dance) oder ein Abend im Lincolner Super-Bowl. Und natürlich darf bei einem Besuch Englands auch das eine oder andere Glas Ale in einem der vielen Pubs nicht fehlen. AmEndewarensichalleTeilnehmereinig:DieswareinetolleWochemit vielen neuen Eindrücken. ROTA sollte unbedingt weitergeführt werden, um noch möglichst vielen Schülerinnen und Schülern derar-tige Erfahrungen zu ermöglichen.

At intervals, we had to wear goggles so that the Germans could laugh at us (and also so we weren’t blinded by the sparks).Our guide only spoke in German and this made it impossible for many of us to understand her.Weobservedasthecartookshapefromtinycomponentstothefinishedproduct.The final step in the process was the “marriage” of the frame and engine. Genetic Engineering RESuLTS

Hello everybody,This week the genetic engineering group took part in activities such as fingerprint analysis, extraction of DNA and blood testing. On Tu-esday we had the luck that a policeman visited us. He told us about the methods used to solve murders and how he would restrain a criminal. He also showed us some of the weapons that are used in doing so.On Thursday we travelled to Dortmund to do DNA fingerprinting. Weused thesamemethodsasprofessional forensic scientists.Forexample the PCR and methods like the gel-electrophoresis. Also on Tuesday we did a DNA extraction from an onion and when the DNA had been successfully extracted we could look at it under the microscope. Lots of love from the genetic engineering group !!xx!!

gebung zu machen, sowohl Landschaftsaufnahmen als auch Gebäude und Sehenswürdigkeiten.Frau Dr. Göhner gab uns für diesen Tag die Aufgabe, viele Techniken auszuprobieren und mit diesen zu experimentieren. Dazu waren auf ei-nem Tisch verschiedene Stationen aufgebaut, an denen man z.B. mit ÖlkreideoderWasserfarbe freimalenkonnteoderandenenmaneinSchwarz -Weiß - Foto farbigabmalen sollte,wobei jedoch folgendeRegeln galten: entweder nur primäre oder nur sekundäre Farben, und Komplementär - Kontraste, in denen die jeweilige Komplementärfarbe verfälschtwerden sollte. Kurz gesagt:Wir sollten absichtliche Fehlereinbauen. Dies gelang uns mehr oder weniger gut, jedoch hatten wir beim Experimentieren alle eine Menge Spaß. Am meisten Spaß hatte ich bei der Technik, bei der man mit einer Zahnbürste über ein Sieb reibt und so schöne kleine Farbkleckse auf dem Bild erhält. Ich hoffe, dass der heutige Tag genau so viel Spaß bringt wie der gestrige.

TAK JSME ZPÁTKY. ODKUD? Z BELGIE. CO TAM? PROJEKT. JAKŽE? PROJEKT ROTA 2007!Ačkoli se vám podle názvu může zdát, že naše škola byla v Belgii re-prezentovat ČR do eurosenátu, není tomu tak. Namísto toho se naše odvážná skupinka 14 studentů v doprovodu profesorů H. Mrázové a M. Purnocha zúčastnila 23.3. - 2.4.2007 mezinárodního projektu ROTA, tentokrát v historickém městě Bruggy právě v Belgii.ROTA je projekt s několikaletou tradicí. Jde o setkání studentů z ev-ropských zemí (Anglie, Německo, Holandsko, Belgie, Španělsko nebo čestní hosté z Čech, ale i děti z azylových domů a hluchoněmí) . Tento rok byl projekt zaměřen na „ EYES TO EYES and FACE TO FACE“, čili na překonání rasistických předsudků, strachu, poznání nových kultur a lidí.I když jsme všichni zpočátku možná trochu strach měli, zbavili jsme se ho velmi rychle, věřte nebo ne. Pro jistotu jsme totiž přijeli o den dříve než ostatní země, abychom si mohli lépe prohlédnout místo činu, a byli tak ve výhodě. Hned v sobotu jsme se setkali s ostatními studenty na úvodní ceremonii, kde se měla prezentovat naše připra-vená vystoupení. Naše prezentace obyčejného (i když, kdo ví, jestli…) spisovatele a jeho inspirativního místa – Prahy pomocí písně a videa sklidila adekvátní potlesk. Profesor Purnoch sklidil také zasloužené ovace, na který se velmi těšil, a profesorka Mrázová se zase těšila ze spousty fotografií, které pořídila.

Jak to tak bývá, každý projekt má i svůj program. Tento náš měl workshopy. Naše česká skupinka byla zastoupena téměř ve všech: hudba, výtvarné umění, fotografie, tanec a kreativní psaní (profesor Purnoch si i zažongloval). Škoda že vám nikdo nemůže popsat vlastní zážitky, jsou totiž nepopsatelné. Kromě worksho-pů jsme měli ještě na společném programu taneční vystoupení v divadle a výlet do Antverp. To bylo tak… Asi uprostřed pobytu nás posadili do vlaku, rozdělili do různonárodnostních skupin a jeli jsme si prohlédnout multikulturní město Antverpy. Nejdříve jsme s průvodci prochodili židovskou čtvrť a čínskou uličku, poté jsme byli na exkurzi v muzeu opravdu moderního umění. S nej-větším úspěchem se nejspíš setkala večeře v restauracích, jako byly japonská, marocká, jamajská nebo židovská.Nakonec jsme měli závěrečnou prezentaci toho, co jsme ve workshopech celý týden tvořili. Spoustu krásných fotek, oprav-du vtipné divadlo, kreativní básničky, obří kubistickou rybu, za-jímavý tanec, skvělou hudbu k podivnému divadlu aj. Všem se to opravdu povedlo. Je třeba říci, že tento výlet prohloubil naše mezinárodní kamarádství, a ačkoli seč jsme se snažili, jak jsme mohli, ostudu jsme nakonec (k radosti vedení naší školy) neudě-lali a všichni nás tam měli rádi!

Living in Europe – oder: Gymnasium Waldstraße goes ROTA

In diesem Jahr sind die Hattinger Schülerinnen und Schüler zu Gast am Elde-College in Schijndel in den Niederlanden. Im Gepäck haben sie ihre Tanzschuhe, Gitarren und andere Instrumente, Omas Lieblingsblusen und Hüte, Digitalkameras und einen eigenen Film (in English please), damit die anderen Schülerinnen und Schüler sehen können, wie man so lebt und lernt in Hattingen.Sonntag morgen in Schijndel: Nach der herzlichen Begrüßung durch den Schulleiter lernen die Teilnehmer ihre Gastfamilien kennen. Die meisten werden fortan nur noch mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs sein und finden es super, den „Alltag“ in einer holländischen Familie (zwei Autostunden von zu Hause) zu erleben. Auch das ist Teil der ROTA-Idee.

„All in the family“ – so lautet das Thema des diesjährigen ROTA-Pro-jekts, das die Schülerinnen und Schüler in acht verschiedenen multina-tionalenWorkshopsbeschäftigt.Wiewollenundwerdenwir im Jahr2030 in Europa leben, wohnen, essen, uns kleiden, kommunizieren, arbeiten?DerCountdownläuft:IndenWorkshopswerdenimLaufederWocheviele Ideengeboren,diskutiert (inEnglishplease),verworfen,neu durchdacht und schließlich umgesetzt.DieTeilnehmerinnenundTeilnehmerderachtWorkshopsfieberndemletzten Abend entgegen, an dem sie ihre Ergebnisse der ROTA-Family, alsodenanderenSchülern,ihrenLehrern,denWorkshop-Leitern,ihrenGastfamilien und den angereisten Schulleitern präsentieren wollen (in English please).Es wird ein grandioser Abend mit Tanz, Theater, Animation, Film, Mode, Architektur, kulinarischen Genüssen und Musik, der zeigt, dass die Teil-nehmer mit großem Elan und Kreativität die Zukunft in Europa gestal-ten. Einfach eine irre Atmosphäre: 100 Jugendliche aus verschiedenen Na-tionen sitzen bei 30 Grad und blauem Himmel in einem Park in Tres Cantos, nur 10 Kilometer von Madrid entfernt.Das ist Völkerverständigung in Reinkultur. Und das war der Schüler-austauschROTA,andemunteranderemdasGymnasiumWaldstraßeteilnahm. Belgier, Niederländer, Engländer, Spanier und eben Deutsche verbrachteneineWocheintrauterGemeinsamkeitbeiherrlichemWet-ter und tollen Veranstaltungen. Der Terminplan war dermaßen voll-gestopft, dass erst im Nachhinein die eigentliche Fülle der Erlebnisse bewusst wurde.Aber mal ganz von vorn:Das diesmalige Thema des ROTA-Projektes war: „Changing the clima-te“. Der Titel, so erläutert Barbara Allwermann, eine Betreuungslehrerin des Projektes, sei jedoch mehrdeutig zu verstehen: „Es soll sowohl um das politische, als auch um das soziale Klima in Europa gehen.“ Und natürlichseiauchunserWettergemeint.Ganzunkonventionell.Das ROTA-Projekt fand in diesem Jahr in Tres Cantos, einem Vorort von Madrid, statt.Kaum angekommen, nach der Eröffnungsveranstaltung, verteilten sich alleSchülerinnenundSchüleraufdieGastfamilien,wosiefüreineWo-che beherbergt wurden.InverschiedenenWorkshopsinBereichenwiez.B.Medien,SportundTheater mischten sich Jugendlichen aus verschiedenen Ländern und ar-beitetengemeinsameineWochezudemThemadesProjekts.Aber auch bei anderen Veranstaltungen konnten sie den Kontakt su-

chen. Beim gemeinsamen Tanzkurs, beim Mittagessen oder schlichtweg abends beim Feiern wurde so manche Freundschaft geknüpft.Ein Ausflug nach Madrid bot viel Sehenswertes, unter anderem wurde der Prado besichtigt, und vor allem gab’s viel Sonne.AmEndederWochepräsentiertendie verschiedenenWorkshopsbeieiner großartigen Abschlussveranstaltung ihre Ergebnisse.Um all das zu ermöglichen, mussten auch die organisierenden Lehrer viel leisten. „Urlaub ist das natürlich nicht für uns“, grinst Roland Gas-ser. Großes Engagement sei gefragt. Als Motivation nennen die beiden Betreuungslehrer das Projekt selbst. Ein Austausch mit so vielen ver-schiedenen beteiligten Ländern sei eine „großartige Sache“, bei dem nicht nur die Schüler noch viel lernen, sondern „auch immer wieder wir selbst“, so Barbara Allwermann. Außerdem mache es Spaß mit den Schülern mal außerhalb des Unterrichts zu arbeiten. Auch in diesem Jahr habe sich wieder ein sehr kreativer und verantwortungsbewusster Kurs zusammengefunden, der super mitgemacht habe.„EinfacheineirreWochewardas“,wertetRafaelaKnäpper.„TolleAt-mosphäre!“, meint auch Felix Hasebrink.Dass sie so schnell wie möglich wieder in das kleine Tres Cantos kom-men wollen, da waren sich sowohl Belgier und Engländer als auch Hol-länder und Deutsche einig.ROTA lohnt sich für jeden, der gerne neue Menschen und Kulturen ken-nenlernen möchte.Nächstes Jahr ist übrigens Lincoln in England Gastgeber.

Science workshop at power plantOn Monday the science workshop group went to a power plant – we interviewed Jules Klessens and David Carboniez about what they expe-rienced that day.Monday was a very special day for the people who worked in the power plant and as well for the students who were going there. Because of the wind the turbines in the power plant were almost standing still and running at a lower speed than they had done for many years.The interesting parts that Jules and David think are the fact that the power plant is running on steam. The power plant is there for extracting coal, gas and thermal production. The most fun part was the big screens in the computer room where you could go with the mouse from screen to screen. The turbines that they saw were 3 meters in height and 4 meters in length.For David this is a bit of preparing for his study, because he wants to study industrial engineering. Jules just chose this workshop because the activities looked more fun than in the other workshops.

ROTA veteran speaks out

Mr. Scully is already 15 years involved with ROTA. It’s a long time.He has a favourite memory of it. It was five years ago on the last night of the ROTA project. He told that it was so good! All the workshops did very well. Especially those of art and drama. They worked together. The drama group all wore a mask that the art group had made.But actually the most important thing is that the young people from dif-ferent countries respect each other’s culture and share their similarities and most of all, celebrate the differences! Also speak other languages besides English. We’vealsoaskedhimabouttowhichcountryhewouldlovetogowhe-re he haven’t been yet. He gave a clear answer. He’s a Spanish teacher, he would love to go to Argentina. Because they speak Spanish, have good literature and of course they play very good football.

Now we’re “Yorking”!TODAY we all spend the day in the lovely city of York. After the daily briefing in the library we went on the coaches, and on the one with the Belgians, Germans and Spaniards the atmosphere was really good, with lots of singing and having fun which made the long trip more pleasant! WhenwegottoYork,wewalkedtowardstheMinsterwherewegotaguidedtourthatlastedaboutanhour.Welearnedalotofinterestingfacts about the York Minster and everybody was really impressed by the size of this impressive building.After the tour we got free-time in which we could do whatever we wan-ted.WewereallveryhungrysowewenttotheMcDonaldstohavea‘healthy’ lunch. Apparently we weren’t the only ones who came up with that idea because when we got there it was full with ROTA-students. Afterwards some went to the York Dungeon, which was according to some people very scary at certain points with hands touching you and making you scared. The only downside of it was that there was a lot of talking through the speakers, which wasn’t very pleasant for the deaf people who couldn’t understand what was said. Others went shopping and came back with a lot of souvenirs or explored the city.Starbucks made quite a profit thanks to us because when we came back to the Minster to go to the coaches there were a lot of people enjoying theirStarbuckscoffeeoffrapuchino.Wecansaythatthedaywasverysuccessful and yet another highlight in this exciting ROTA week!

DOES MOnEy RuLE THE WORLD?

The international crisis of the economy in 2008 became reality in all our home countries. But we set out to detect the dimension of crisis for the people who live there. First of all we analysed the example OPEL. The international car-manufacturer has factories in England, Belgium, and Bochum, Germany near to Hattingen. So we looked in detail at what happened to these factories and what happened to the people who worked in these factories.People from six countries coming together talking about politics and crisis was the second part of the workshop. Six countries - six different systems of government and all discussing the crisis. To know about the systems we present them and especially the topics economy and the school system. One interesting part of the discussion was the way the counties reacted after the earthquake and the nuclear accident in Japan in march and what the reactions of the people in the different countries were like.

The third part of our investigations was the story of “The Ruhr Valley”. In the past the Ruhr Valley was the industrial melting pot of Europe. Co-al-mining and the steel industry were the leading employers. Our team of journalists detected the roots of the Industrial Age and presented the structural change of the Ruhr- Valley writing “The Zeche Zollverein-Story” and “The Report from the Landschaftspark Duisburg”. Our project aims to show: There is a way out of the crisis. The people can go on and there is still a vision of a great future. The structural change in the Ruhr Valley might serve as an example for all people in Europe to go on and fight the crisis. Then we can say: No, money does not rule the world. Six countries – six types of government. Living in times of cri-sis, people all over the world are interested in the way other countries and other people are dealing with their problems. To be well informed we prepared short presentations about the countries’ type of government and about two additional the-mes, economy especially unemployment and the school system. On this basis we were also able to discuss themes like the diffe-rent actions taken against the crisis, including off topics like the perception of the royals in Belgium and Great Britain or nuclear power.

BELGIuM

As everybody knows, Belgium is currently the country without a govern-ment.Wehavenothadagovernmentfornearly250days,thatmakesus the world champion. The reason we don’t have a government is because the people who speak French and the people who speak Dutch don’t agree about lots of things. Nobody wants to admit something to the other, that’s basically why we don’t have a government. Normally youhave threegovernments,one forFlanders,one forWalloniaandone for Brussels. Then you have another three governments who are responsible for other things. Of those 3 governments one represents the Dutch speaking people, one the French speaking people and one the German speaking people. If you want to get more information about Belgium and this governments you need to search on Youtube for “Do you want to know more about Belgium?”

SCHOOL SySTEM

Our school system is as follows. First you have primary school, then you have secondary school, then you have high school and lastly you can do college. It depends on what you choose to study in high school. In high school you can do ASO, TSO, KSO or BSO. ASO is a general school where you get a general education. TSO is quite the same as ASO but with less theory. KSO is an artistic study and BSO is preparing students to learn a profession. Most people of ASO and TSO go to college. And in Belgium there is a good chance that you will have work but you are never sure…

Field TripsOnWednesdaymorninghalfoftheROTA-students,whododance,food,technology and political forum workshops went on a trip to „Zeche Zoll-verein“ museum in Essen. The trip was about a historical building and Zollverein is therefore symbolic of the culture industry in the Ruhr.In 1847 Franz Haniel bought the region, because there was a lot of coal under the ground. He started to build a factory and to process the coal. Coal, the “black gold”, brought a lot of money to the region , because people used coal to produce fuel and energy. And at that time it was reallysuccessful.Wealsowatchedafilmabouttheworkingconditions

and people who worked at the factory had been talking about their working experiences and conditions. Working in a coalmine wasn’tsafe, they didn’t wear gloves or any other things to protect themselves. But after 135 years of producing coal they closed the factory and it happened because Germany was no longer competitive amongst other countries which produced the coal for lower prices. So Zollverein was closed in 1986.The ROTA group was divided into three groups and each had a tour guide. The tour was about 2 hours. After that we had some free time, some people ate “Currywurst” and sat down in the sun. The guys were playing football.So the students said they enjoyed the day in the Ruhr Museum and they are happy because they saw the history of coal produced in Germany.

Crawling MicrobugIn technology workshop the students were building an crawling micro-bug. This bug reacts on light sources and moves in the direction of the source. You can choose between two velocities the bug will move with. Furthermore you are able to adjust the sensitivity of detecting the light. If it is totally dark, the bug will stop.

Every student built his own microbug. But in many sequences they had to collaborate to build the difficult parts.They had to work properly and focused to get a satisfactory and well-functioning result. Most parts of the small vehicle are tiny and have to be fixed on the central plate by soldering. Many of the students did it for the first time and were quite happy, when they switched the on-off-button and the bug started to “walk”.The technology workshop participants started their work on the bug onMondayafternoon.Thefollowingthreedaystheyweren´tabletocontinue because of trips to BP refinery, Zeche Zollverein and Opel. On Friday afternoon all students finished work and switched on their com-pleted microbugs.

Workshop BiotechnologyWeliveinanerawherethe‘makeablehuman’ iswithinreach.Genetherapy will become a standard technique for curing genetic diseases (e.g. cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, …). The current difficulties in human cloning will also be resolved in the near future. Time to think about the possibilities, but also the ethic objections. In addition this workshop will use photo editing software to produce human-animal hybrid images.

The Vacanti mouse was a laboratory mouse that had what looked like a human ear grown on its back. The “ear” was actually an ear-shaped cartilage structure grown by seeding cow cartilage cells into a biode-gradable ear-shaped mold. The earmouse, as it became known as, was created by Dr. Charles Vacanti, at the University of Massachusetts in 1995. Created to demonstrate a method of fabricating cartilage structu-res for transplantation into human patients, a resorbable polyester fa-bric was infiltrated with bovine cartilage cells and implanted under the skin of a hairless mouse. The mouse itself was a commonly used strain of immunocompromised mouse, preventing a transplant rejection.

Workshop SoundpaintingWe’re looking formusicians and singerswho love different styles ofmusic, no matter the level. There is one condition however: you have to love adventure and experimenting.WHAT IS SOunDPAInTInG?

Soundpainting is a “sign language” that allows you to compose in front of a live audience. A soundpainter uses signs and gestures in order to communicate and to tell musicians what they could, should or must do!During the 20th century there has been a lot of experiments with all sorts of alternative ways to make music. Soundpainting is not only one of the most successful alternative ways to make music, it is also highly entertaining!Soundpainting was invented in the seventies by the American composer WalterThompson.Sincethen,ithasturnedintoamultidisciplinarylan-guage shared by actors, dancers and even visual artists.WHAT ARE WE GOInG TO DO?

During the project week, you will be immersed in the language of soundpainting. Each day, we learn new gestures and signs. As a sin-ger or a musician, you will learn how to perform. But you will also be a soundpainter yourself, who creates and composes in front of a live audience. And who knows, you might even have to dance and perform as an actor …At the end of the week, our colleagues will be impressed by this live performance!

Workshop ArtIt has been a busy week in the workshop art, led by our amazing ar-tist Carola. Combined with the skills of Arie the computer specialist we created an animation that showed all the work we have done. In the be-ginning we started with nothing but old toys and in a few funny hours they transformed into something new. Our first lesson was focussed onalittleexercise:Wehadbeengiventhemostcommonandordinaryobjects like onions, eggs, cardboard boxes or sterophor and were then separated into groups to create a photostory with our materials.Afterwards we started with the real animation since everybody brought along some broken toys we were pretty curious about what we were going to do. Carola told us not to think about it, just do it, even if you don’t have any idea how to start: The exercise could be fulfilled and the broken toys turned into awesome actors for our animation. Again, we didn’t need a playscript or a vision, we just started taking pictures of the toys interacting. Of course this whole procedure of producing something we didn’t know about in the beginning was more than fun-ny. Along, we learned very much about different countries, arts, our imagination and artistic capabilities and – most importantly – made a lot of friends. All in all, the workshop was amazing and we thank everyone for the opportunity ROTA has given us.

Drama workshop: “Don’t act – just feel!“For this year’s Rota project I decided to participate in the drama work-shop. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, something with classical the-ater, acting and memorizing lines I imagined.But when I walked into the room in which the drama group rehearsed during the week I already knew I was extremely wrong. Not acting, but feeling, that’s what it’s all about, our workshop leader Ricktoldus.Wedidseveralwarmupgamesandwalkingexercisestoget to know each other. Other people may have been surprised to see ten of us trying to stand on one chair together or to watch us walking around the room like cavemen ten thousand years ago not opening our eyes for a solid hour and a half. But we didn’t care and ten individuals from different countries that had nothing to do with each other at first could literally feel the group spirit grow through the course of the week. Wedidnotmemorizeasinglelineoractoutasinglesceneordialogun-til the last day, but I dare to say that our performance for the final night was well-rounded and successful. Combining several elements of wal-king, holding up signs, jumping off tables, creating tension, grouping up, isolating people again and playing music, we created a powerful story that carried the audience along and conveyed a strong message. So now, after this amazing experience I recommend you all to partici-pate in the ROTA project and choose the drama workshop. You will get

to know many great people, do things you would never do in school, get to know yourself better and have a lot of fun!And always remember: Acting is not projecting but really feeling what you are doing. That is the only way you and others can truly believe the story.

Workshop ArchitectureA real architect led our workshop. He gave us this task: Design a house in which all seven people of your group can live. It was no problem to talk to the others although the groups were very mixed: In group two, there were a Spanish, a Polish, another Dutch, a German, a Belgian and an English person! Everyone found their task so that work together was mainly fun. Whenwehadfinishedthemodelandthefigures,wemadeamovie.It showed a day (invented by team members, of course) in our house, equipped with amazing technology.Welikedtheresults!

Picture this!PHOTOGRAPHY students began the week by making experimental ima-ges including animations, life-size figures, photograms and shadows. The group was divided into three: the first was in the darkroom ma-kingphotogramsofdifferentobjects;thesecondwereworkingonthisyear’sROTA them,“GetAlive”; the lastgroupwas takingpicturesofdifferent poses to form “Get Alive” in German, English, Spanish and sign language.IntheSpanishgrouptheycutoutthelettersof“Wakeup”(Despierta)inSpanish. The aim was to get art and photography together to illustrate the week’s theme.Belgian student Morgane Knockaert said: “I like it because it is very creative”. “This is a very easy and fun workshop because it enables you to experiment with different images,” added LCHS student Zane Zaika.

Murder most foul!IN the Forensic Science workshop on Thursday, the students had the change to investigate a murder scene.They used the techniques they had learned on Monday and Tuesday to search for and identify clues, including blood spatter and fingerprints.Everybody got involved and enjoyed wearing the white suits which made the activity more realistic.

Towards the end of the week, I got the chance to have a chat with Stefan, one of the teachers from Kentalis, the Dutch school for the deaf, and leader of the Dutch Sign Language workshop, about the relevance of sign language in a modern world.Whyissignlanguageanecessarylanguage?Everybody needs to be able to communicate. For instance, those who are deaf who can’t speak need to be able to communicate. How is Dutch sign language different to an international alternative?Whensignlanguagefirstdeveloped,therewasnowaytocommunicateefficiently, like we can today with the internet. Therefore, each langua-ge developed its own sign alternative. There is an international sign language (Gestuno), but it’s quite a young language so it’s not accepted very widely. American is probably the most popular sign alternative, because of the number of people who speak English.It is a good idea to teach fully-able people and children sign language?Yes, because it gives both deaf and fully able people the chance to com-municate.Also,Ithinkvisuallearningisgoodforeverybody;childrenare more likely to learn a language more easily.

Workshop Forensic ScienceIn the Forensics Science workshop we learned how a crime scene unit secures evidences. In many experiments and investigations we found out about some methods in forensics science and at the end of the week we solved a fictive murder.Monday morning we got welcomed by Mr. Brown, our very friendly teacher, who seems to be a trust teacher, because many students came to him in breaks to talk to him or to pick up things they have stored there.Westartedourcoursewithlookingatskeletons.Atthebackofthe classroom on some tables were some fake and real skulls, bones andtwoskeletons.Whilewewerelookingatthemodels,theteachertaught us what and how you can find out facts if you just see the bones of a person. For example if you want to find out if a skull is from a man or from a woman, you can look at jawbone, as closer it gets to 90° as higher is the probability that it was a man. Also the whole skull of a woman is smoother. Another strong evidence to find out about the gen-der is a bone at the back of the skull, who holds the neck muscles, as bigger this bone is, as more muscles were hold there. From this you can conclude that the bigger the bone is the skull is more probably a male skull, because man usually have more muscles. All these are just strong hints,neveraclue!Wegotmanymoreinformation.Oneskeletonhada male body, but a female skull, when Mr. Brown bought it. This is be-cause many think a female skull is prettier, because it is smoother, so it

is sold better. On another table were some fake skulls of different time ages.Wegotaquickoverviewhowthehomosapienswasdeveloped.Afterwards we got folders which included a time table for the week and extra information of the topics we worked on during the week. Westartedwiththenewtopicbloodtypes.Althoughwehadall theinformation in our folders Mr. Brown explained all we need to do the in-vestigation with a Power Point Presentation and we didn‘t have to read the folders, they were just an extra information to read at home. After we learned the theory we started some practical work, an experiment. (Wehad4different(fake)bloodsamples(Victim,Suspect1,Suspect2and from the crime scene), 4 blood typing trays, 12 mixing sticks, Anti-A, Anti-B and Anti-Rhesus factor blood serum. First we put some drops of every blood sample in three wells of the tray. Then we added some drops of the Anti-A blood serum to one well of every blood sample. Anti-B and Anti-Rhesus factor blood serum was added as the Anti-A serumtowellswherenootherAntifactorisalreadyin.Withthemixingstickswesiredthemixtures.WefoundoutthatSuspect1bloodgroupmatches with the one of the crime scene. So Suspect 1 could be the murderer, but don‘t need to be it.) Then we started with the presump-tive blood testing. In this topic we learned how to detect iron sulphate. If it is negative then it is no blood, if it is positive then it may be blood. After lunch we made the blood splatter experiment, where we drop a red liquid on a white paper from different heights and in movement. On the next day we looked at fingerprints, how you can differ and de-tect them. Then we extracted some DNA of a kiwi and learned about

the genetic fingerprint. Later we examined on fibres and hair under the microscope and we found out the difference between synthetic fibres and natural hair. WhileallthestudentswereatadaytriptoYork,Mr.BrownandtwoSixth Form Students set up a crime scene in the tennis pavilion. On Thursday we made the investigation of the crime scene. There were two murders, one in a bathroom and one in the living room. A group leader made a sketch of the crime scenes and added all evidence numbers in the sketch. Others were looking for fingerprints, fibres, hairs, drugs and other evidences using the procedures we learned on Monday and Tuesday.Iwasinthegroupofthelivingroommurder.Whenwese-cured all evidences, we sat down and discussed what a plausible story line of the murder could be. On the next day we saved our results and made boards to present our case. Our final result was that the victim Charlie was visited by Nicole Berry and drunk a cup of tea with her. This is proved by two teacups in the kitchen, on one where the fingerprints of Nicole Berry on the other the victim‘s fingerprints. Then Nicole left, also proved by the fact, that the cups were in the kitchen. (The murder seem to had enough time to write a suicide note, so if it would be the own fingerprints at the cup, she would have taken them away) Then Charliesetuptosmokeajoint,whichwasnotburnedyet.WearenotsureifshediditaloneorwithBarbaraWool,whocameinsidelater.Then an argument started, we were not sure about what, but probably about money, because we found a lot money under the pillow of the bed or about drugs, because we found a lot of weed behind some pic-ture frames. The argument is proved by a chair which is turned over. The victim was stabbed to death. On the knife we found fingerprints of BarbaraWool,butnonefromCharlie.Soweconcludedthatitwasno

suicide,althoughwefoundasuicidenoteonthedesk.Wecomparedthe writing of the suicide note with the writing on a shopping list we found in the kitchen, which was probably written by the victim, but the writings did not match. This proves our theory that it was no suicide, butamurdercommittedbyBarbaraWool.Afterwefinishedourpresen-tation we set up a crime scene in another classroom to show the others how it looks like if we are working on a crime scene.All in all I am very glad that I choose this workshop and I want to thank Mr. Brown, all the other ROTA staff members and my host family for an amazing, wonderful week.

Workshop MusicWe,LenaandLea,tookpartinthemusicworkshopinLincolnduringROTA. It was a great experience and we had a lot of fun! During the first days we were busy practicing our performance for Friday night which consisted of Taiko drumming and singing. It was nice to get the chance to play instruments one has never played or even seen before. Another thing we really liked was that everyone had a chance to play a part in the performance, no matter what the musicianship was like. Seeing everyone participating, having fun and wanting to give one’s best created a feeling of togetherness. It was easy to make new friends since we all had the same interests. Another highlight was playing the steel drums at the university. Although it was very loud and chaotic, the final outcome was amazing and it felt like being in the Caribbean. All of this showed us what one can achieve with only two sticks, a drum, your voice and a group of crazy people in four days.

Sunday, March 22An EXCITInG ADVEnTuRE THROuGH MADRID

On Sunday, all the ROTA participants went to Madrid to visit the Reina Sofia Museum and to have a picnic at the Retiro Park.At first the students met at the train station of Tres Cantos. Later the stu-dents split up at different stations. Arrived in Madrid, all the students vi-sited the Reina Sofia Museum and participated in a photographic Gym-khana in which they mad photos in front of important sight of Madrid.After that we went to the Retiro Park. The students had some free time to get to know each other and could built new international contacts. They also used the time to have lunch.

At the end of this eventful day the students went back to Tres Cantos to spent time with their host families. Overall it was a successful journey.Report by Linda Hoberg and Bonnie Kirschner

The project will be integrated into the teaching programme of the school year 2014-2015 at the Arts department.Whowilldrawtheillustrations?Theworkshopstudents“ArtworkIma-ges without Borders” and the students this academic year in 1st and 3rd of ESO will draw.The art workshop is collaborating with an international project named the Cuzco Project. They will help illustrate a textbook that is currently being created for primary schools in rural areas of Peru. It is a cooperati-ve, solidary, and interactive plan that aims to support education throug-hout this country. The arts students are also decorating the outside wall of the gym with their drawings.

Interview with Carlos PlateroCarlos Platero, a professor at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, spoke to us about the challenges of integrating renewable energy into power systems. He told us that the most important thing about generating energy is being able to generate enough to reach the demand of con-sumer. This is problematic because renewable energy such as wind and solar energy does not produce enough energy to meet the demand of everyday life because it depends on the weather.Furthermore, such energy is not able to be stored, therefore it is used as soon as it is produced and unfortunately that is not enough. As a result, we still depend on energy produced by conventional power plants. In the future we still do not know if we could depend on the renewable power plants because they are unreliable but we hope to find a way to use them as a main producer of energy.

Interview with Ignacio Gonzalez PaniaguaWehavetoconsumeless,bymaybebuying1thinginsteadof2.Alsowe have to use the right technologies, in order to have a smart city. Or-ganisation of things is also very important. If we all work together, the world will become a smart world, instead of little smart city’s!Today we spoke to Ignacio López of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid about his views about the environment and Tres Cantos as a smart city. Hisviewswerequitecontroversial;hetoldusthathedoesnotbelievethat there is such thing as a “smart city”, only a city that can be environ-mentallyfriendly.Wecanonlybeefficienttoanextentdependingonthe technology that is available.As a geothermic engineer, he is aware of the benefits and drawbacks of being a smart city. If something is efficient he told us that we need to take into account the costs involved in creating this. For example, hybrid cares such as the Toyota Prius are considered to be efficient, however the production involved is less efficient and also expensive.However, Tres Cantos is making small steps of progress towards being more environmentally friendly. Solar power is one of the techniques used. He told us about the different types of solar energy such as ther-mal and photovoltaic energy. These both are efficient sources of energy.

It strikes me that Rota is older than the participating students are! Still Rota is alive and kicking, as young and sprite as you are!Let me explain what Rota means to me: First of all Rota to me is a spring offriendship;Rotaisaplaceforpoliticaldiscussionanddebate,centredaroundacommontheme;Rotawillofferyouspaceforcreativityandfantasy; and finally, throughRota youwill learn towork together insmall groups, which is not at all easy!Rota revolves around one specific theme. This year we were inspired by a book by Robert and Edward Skidelsky, father and son, entitled: How much is enough? This means we want to obtain great results with basic materials: our talents will be needed to transform waste into art, and tofindsolutionsfordigitalproblems.Wewilluseourvoicesandourelegance to create a statement. Through new architecture we want to create a smart city.Wewill cross borders in ourminds, and learn from other countries.Don’t be afraid to speak in a foreign language or to ask questions about any aspect of your school careers or your respective lifestyles. Einer bereits sehr langen Tradition folgend brachen 15 Schülerinnen undSchülerdesGymnasiumsWaldstraßeinderletztenWochevordenOsterferien zur ROTA-Projektwoche auf, die dieses Jahr ganz im Zeichen des 25. Jubiläums stand. Zusammen mit den Delegationen aus Holland, Spanien und England und den gastgebenden Schülern aus Brügge in Belgien erlebten insgesamt 80 Schülerinnen und Schüler eine spannen-deundereignisreicheWoche.Im Rahmen des Projektes beschäftigten sich die Teilnehmer in acht ver-schiedeneninternationalbesetztenWorkshopsmitdemThema„SmartCity“ und das natürlich ausnahmslos in englischer Sprache. Sie erkunde-ten die historischen Städte Brügge und Gent und erlebten den (Schul-)Alltag und die belgische Lebensart in den Gastfamilien, z.B. Fahrrad fahren, belgische „frieten“ und „chocolade“.Ein besonderes Highlight war der feierliche Empfang im alten „Stad-huis“, zu dem auch die aktuellen und ehemaligen Schulleiterinnen und Schulleiter sowie viele Ehrengäste eingeladen waren.

Diese Aufgabe war allerdings für jeden von uns zunächst zu schwierig, des-halb nahm jeder das Instrument, das er gut spielen konnte und die gan-ze Gruppe improvisierte so lange, bis nach und nach ein richtiges Lied

Creative Sewing WorkshopLena und ich haben während des Rota-Projekts unsere Erfahrungen im Nähen gesammelt. Obwohl wir beide anfangs nicht sonderlich begeis-tertvonderVorstellungwareneineWochelangzunähen,wurdenwirdoch positiv überrascht. DieHauptidee des „Creative Sewing“-Work-shopswares,ausAltNeuzumachen.Wirsolltenunsereältestenundkaputtesten Kleidungsstücke mitbringen und mit Hilfe unserer Grup-penleiter wurden sie so aufgepeppt, dass man sie nicht wegwerfen, sondern wieder gut auf der Straße tragen konnte. Dazu wurden uns eine Menge verschiedener Stoffe zur Verfügung gestellt. In der Mitte derWochehabenwir einenAusflug zu einemSecondhandladenun-ternommen, in dem wir uns nicht nur frei bewegen und alles kaufen konnten, was wir wollten, sondern auch eine exklusive Führung bekom-men haben. Der Großteil unserer Gruppe hatte noch nie zuvor genäht und demnach keinerlei Erfahrungen im Nähen. Trotzdem hat es jeder vonunsgeschafftinnerhalbeinerWocheeinkomplettesOutfitzuent-

werfen, das am letzten Abend in Form einer Art Catwalk den anderen Teilnehmern präsentiert wurde.

Art WorkshopIm Kunstworkshop hat sich eine Gruppe von Jugendlichen der unter-schiedlichen Nationalitäten zusammengefunden, um gemeinsam krea-tivzuwerden.DieArbeithatineinergroßenWerkstattstattgefunden,in der alle Arbeitsmaterialien für Kunst vorhanden waren. Als wir den Raum betraten, befand sich bereits in der Mitte des Raumes ein großer Berg von Gegenständen, die nicht mehr gebraucht wurden. Das Ziel desWorkshopswaresdiesewiederzuetwasNeuemundBrauchba-ren zu verwerten.AlsGruppehabenwir einmodernesWohnzimmerentwickelt, das sowohl praktisch, modern als auch nah an der Natur sein sollte. Bevor wir angefangen haben zu basteln und zu bauen, ha-ben wir uns damit beschäftigt, wie man kreativ denkt und sich von der gewohnten Aufgabe der Gegenstände löst, um etwas Neues zu entwi-ckeln.AußerdemhabenwirunsdierecyceltenWerkeandererKünstlerangeschaut und uns so inspiriert. Danach haben wir all unsere Ideen zusammengeworfen und in kleinen Gruppen angefangen diese um-zusetzen. tem Holz und Brettern gebaut wurde und den Raum vollendet hat. Da-runter wurden Sitzgelegenheiten angebracht und die Äste dienten als Grundlage für hängende Regale. Abschließend lässt sich sagen, dass im Kunstworkshop jeder seiner Kreativität freien Lauf lassen konnte und in einer angenehmen Stimmung mit sehr viel Spaß zusammen gearbeitet wurde.

Besuch in der SMAKAm Mittwoch stand der Besuch der Stadt Gent auf dem Plan. Viele blick-ten diesem bereits seit dem ersten Tag mit Vorfreude entgegen. Mit Recht, wie sich herausstellte. Gent wird mit seiner historischen Altstadt der Bezeichnung als historisches Zentrum Flanderns mehr als gerecht. Auch wir begaben uns nach der etwa 40-minütigen Zugfahrt auf eine Erkundungstour durch die Stadt.Gent bietet nicht nur ein historisches Stadtzentrum, sondern auch viele moderne und künstlerische Viertel, da es mit ca. 65.000 Studenten die beliebteste Studentenstadt Belgiens ist.Die künstlerische Seite der Stadt lässt sich auch in dem S.M.A.K ( Ste-delijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, also dem Städtischen Museum für AktuelleKunst)wiederfinden.VorallemfürunserenWorkshopArtwares sehr interessant, da wir uns dort von den Ausstellungsstücken für unsereweiterenWorkshoparbeiteninspirierenlassenkonnten.Nach dem Besuch im S.M.A.K hatten wir noch genug Freizeit, um die Stadt auf eigene Faust zu erkunden. In gemischten Gruppen begaben wirunsalsoaufEntdeckungsreise.WährendeinigedieZeitnutzten,umsich die Sehenswürdigkeiten wie die St.Bravo- oder die Belfrid-Kathed-rale anzuschauen, begaben sich andere zuerst ins Zentrum, um etwas

zu shoppen und dann an die St.Micheals-Brücke, um dort belgische Waffelnzuessen.Insgesamt war es ein sehr schöner Tag, da wir nicht nur viel vom his-torischen und kunstvollen Gent sehen konnten, sondern es auch aus-reichend Zeit für interessante Gespräche mit den Teilnehmern aus den anderen Ländern gab.

Leben mit der GastfamilieManche der Gastgeschwister schrieben uns im Voraus schon per E-Mail oder über Facebook an. Somit konnte man schon erste Informationen untereinander austauschen, um den anderen besser kennenzulernen. Trotzdem war die Aufregung auf beiden Seiten vor dem ersten Treffen sehr groß. Die Stimmung lockerte sich aber relativ schnell, da man sich super verstand und die ganze Gastfamilie einen sehr herzlich empfan-gen und aufgenommen hat. Es war super interessant mehr über die Ge-wohnheiten einer belgischen Familie zu erfahren und sowohl Gemein-samkeiten als auch Unterschiede zu der eigenen Familie festzustellen. Aufregend war auch die Kultur und Sprache zu erleben. Typisches Essen aus Belgien stand natürlich auch auf dem Speiseplan und es war super lecker!WünscheundAngewohnheitenwurdenvonderFamilieakzeptiertundeswareinharmonischesZusammenlebeninderganzenWoche.Noch spannender war das Zusammenleben, wenn man mit drei unter-schiedlichen Nationalitäten zusammen wohnte. Zum Beispiel war ich selber noch mit einer Spanierin in einer Gastfamilie untergebracht. So-mit gab es noch mehr zu erzählen und zu erfahren.
