FR Chaque année, notre festival offre un aperçu

explosif de tout ce qui fait le jazz d’aujourd'hui.

Du manouche au moderne, de la fusion aux

rythmes world, cette 5ème édition s'affirme

dans une programmation généreuse et sans

frontières. Car le jazz est mouvant, malléable. Il

se nourrit de la vie pour la transcender. Telle une

rivière, il creuse son lit à travers les cultures et

les genres. Et comme toutes les musiques, il

développe un langage universel, sans œillères.

Ainsi, ce sont quatorze projets aux énergies et

horizons variables qui convergeront autour de

collaborations fusionnelles, avec un focus sur

nos voisins français dans toutes leurs diversités,

mais aussi la Night du saxophoniste Nicolas

Kummert, l'expo de l’illustrateur bruxellois Yves

Druart, une conférence, et un concert jeune

public. Bienvenue dans le kaléidoscope unique

de nos trois scènes !

NL Ons festival biedt elk jaar een explosief

overzicht van wat er reilt en zeilt in de actuele

jazzwereld. Voor deze 5de editie kiezen we

resoluut voor een veelzijdige en

onconventionele programmering: van gipsyjazz

tot modern en van fusion tot

wereldmuziekritmes. Jazz is immers een

dynamisch en ongebonden genre dat inspiratie

put uit het leven zelf om het te overstijgen.

Jazz is als een rivier die zich een weg baant

door culturen en genres. En zoals alle muziek

ontwikkelt het genre ook een eigen universele

taal, zonder oogkleppen. Aan de hand van dit

uitgebreide programma verenigen we veertien

projecten met uiteenlopende dynamieken en

achtergronden rond fusionele samenwerkingen.

We focussen hierbij op onze Franse buren in al

hun diversiteit, en maken tevens plaats voor de

Night van saxofonist Nicolas Kummert, voor de

Brusselse illustrator Yves Druart, voor een

conferentie en voor een concert gericht op een

jong publiek. Ontdek het unieke

EN Every year, our festival offers an explosive

glimpse of all the different aspects that make

up the modern jazz scene. From gypsy jazz to

modern jazz, from fusion to world rhythms, this

5th edition boasts a generous programme and

a striking lack of borders. Because jazz is

constantly changing and malleable. It feeds on

life in order to then transcend it. Like a river, its

bed cuts through cultures and genres. And like

all music it develops a universal language but

without blinkers. Fourteen projects therefore

with varying levels of energy and horizons will

converge around fusional collaborations, with a

focus on our French neighbours in all their

diversity, as well as the Night of saxophonist

Nicolas Kummert, the Brussels illustrator Yves

Druart, a conference, and a concert for young

FR Le génial pianiste Eric Legnini revient à

une formule purement instrumentale avec son

compagnon de longue date Thomas Bramerie

à la contrebasse et Rocky Gresset à la guitare.

Un retour aux sources, pour celui qui a débuté

sa carrière dans la musique instrumentale et la

construit brillamment depuis près de 20 ans,

raflant une Victoire du Jazz en 2011 (« The

Vox »).

Pour l’ouverture de la 5ème édition du River,

nous serons au cœur de ce qui anime ce

musicien, producteur et arrangeur : la mélodie.

Les possibilités sont décuplées par ce trio ! Le

son original et l’ouverture du guitariste aux

cotés de la base solide et du son rond et

subtil de la contrebasse offrent un terrain de

jeu idéal pour distiller le lyrisme et le groove

du magicien Legnini.

een louter instrumentale formule in het

gezelschap van zijn trouwe vriend

contrabassist Thomas Bramerie en van gitarist

Rocky Gresset. Voor Legnini gaat het hier om

een terugkeer naar de bron, aangezien hij zijn

loopbaan begon in de wereld van de

instrumentale muziek en al bijna 20 jaar

succesvol componeert. In dit kader sleepte hij

in 2011 een « Victoire du Jazz » in de wacht

(« The Vox »). Voor de opening van de 5de

editie van River, duiken we recht in het hart

van datgene wat deze muzikant, producent

en arrangeur drijft: de melodie. De formule van

een trio verdrievoudigt de mogelijkheden! Het

originele geluid en de ouverture van de

gitarist bieden, samen met de stevige basis en

het ronde en subtiele geluid van de contrabas,

een ideaal spelterrein om het lyrisme en de

groove van duivelskunstenaar Legnini tot

uitdrukking te brengen.

EN The brilliant pianist Eric Legnini returns to

a purely instrumental formula with his

long-time partner Thomas Bramerie on bass

and Rocky Gresset on guitar. A return to his

roots, for the musician who started his career

in instrumental music and expanded it with

brilliance over a period of almost 20 years,

winning a Victoire du Jazz in 2011 ("The Vox").

For the opening of the 5th edition of the

River, we will be plunged into the heart of the

element that drives this musician, producer

and arranger: melody. And the added

presence of the trio means that the number of

possibilities increases tenfold! The original

sound and the opening of the guitarist

alongside the solid base and the round and

subtle sound of the double bass provide the

ideal playground for sublimating the lyricism

and groove of Legnini the magician.

FR Il y a 35 ans, Mike Mainieri, Michael Brecker,

Don Grolnick, Eddie Gomez et Peter Erskine

entamaient une aventure anthologique dont la

discographie bouleversa l'histoire du jazz-fusion :

Steps Ahead. Par le mariage vibraphone/piano/

saxophone, une complicité rythmique hors pair

et une écriture résolument lyrique, ces

précurseurs ont jeté les jalons d'un genre qui a

rencontré beaucoup d'adeptes durant les trois

décennies suivantes. Aujourd'hui, cinq jazzmen

belges de réputation internationale ont décidé

de leur rendre hommage. Forts de parcours tous

plus impressionnants les uns que les autres, ils

ont foulé les plus grands festivals auprès

d'artistes tels que Toots Thielemans, Tom Harrel,

Chaka Khan, Manu Katché, Claude Nougaro,

Richard Galliano ou Joe Lovano... Tous épris du

quintet mythique, ils le revisitent avec une

fraîcheur intacte !

NL Vijfendertig jaar geleden vatten Mike Mainieri,

Michael Brecker, Don Grolnick, Eddie Gomez en

Peter Erskine een « anthologisch » avontuur aan

met een discografie die een omwenteling

teweegbracht in de geschiedenis van de

jazzfusion: Steps Ahead. Door de combinatie van

vibrafoon/piano/saxofoon, een buitengewone

ritmische eensgezindheid en uitgesproken

lyrische composities, zetten deze voorlopers de

bakens uit voor een genre dat talloze

aanhangers zal tellen tijdens de volgende drie

decades. Voor vijf internationaal gereputeerde

Belgische jazzmuzikanten was het moment

aangebroken om hen een eerbetoon te brengen.

Stuk voor stuk legden ze de meest

indrukwekkende parcours af en speelden ze op

de grootste festivals naast muzikanten als Toots

Thielemans, Tom Harrel, Chaka Khan, Manu

Katché, Claude Nougaro, Richard Galliano en Joe

Lovano... Na een tijd afstand te hebben genomen

van het mythische kwintet, keren ze er nu naar

terug alsof het de eerste keer is!

series of recordings that shook up the world of

jazz-fusion: Steps Ahead. With their combination

FR Une musique des extrêmes qui pratique

allègrement le grand écart, passant sans complexe

d’un élan de tendresse à un tourbillon de

rage. Valentin Ceccaldi est la nouvelle révélation du

violoncelle en Europe. Du jazz expérimental aux

grands orchestres classiques, son archet rugueux

et ses pizzicati raffinés illuminent tout ce qu’ils

croisent. On le trouve ici avec son grand complice

Sylvain Darrifourcq qui après quelques

collaborations remarquables a développé un

univers singulier et créatif, mécanique et physique

avec ses propres projets. Ensemble, ils tissent le

canevas idéal pour les sax imbriqués de Manuel

Hermia, artiste aventurier qui sillonne les mondes

de la world tout en portant toujours haut et fort le

cri primal d’un jazz furieusement libertaire. Tous

trois défendent l’idée d’une musique sans

frontières, se nourrissant de toutes les musiques.

band en schakelt complexloos over van tedere

opwellingen naar furieuze wervelingen.

Cellist Valentin Ceccaldi is de nieuwe Europese

revelatie. Met zijn vurige stroken en geraffineerd

pizzicato schittert hij in alle genres: van

experimentele jazz tot de muziek van grote

klassieke orkesten. Hier duikt hij op met zijn

trouwe kompaan Sylvain Darrifourcq die, na

enkele opmerkelijke samenwerkingen, in zijn eigen

projecten een heel persoonlijk creatief,

mechanisch en fysiek universum ontwikkelde.

Samen weven ze het ideale canvas voor de

«overlappende» saxofoons van Manuel Hermia,

een avontuurlijke saxofonist die de wereldmuziek

exploreert door de oerkreet van een razend

libertaire jazz altijd luider te laten weerklinken.

Alle drie verdedigen ze het idee van een

onbegrensde, uit alle genres puttende muziek.

an amazing and joyous scope travelling through

uncontrived outbursts of tenderness to whirlwinds

of rage.Valentin Ceccaldi is the new revelation in

the world of the cello in Europe. From

experimental jazz to great classical orchestral

pieces, his rough attack of the bow and refined

pizzicati add a luminous sound to everything they

touch. He performs here with his great partner

Sylvain Darrifourcq who, after some remarkable

collaborative ventures, has created his very own

unique and creative, mechanical and physical

universe inhabited by his own projects.

Together, they weave the ideal canvas for the

interlocking sax of Manuel Hermia, an adventurous

saxophonist who travels the whole spectrum of

world music whilst continuing to fly the banner

high for the primal scream of a furiously libertarian

(or free) jazz. All three defend the notion of music

without borders, and take their inspiration from

all kinds of music.

Avital et du trompettiste Avishai Cohen,

Yonathan Avishai est sans conteste l'une des

voix les plus originales de sa génération.

Marqué par l'influence de musiciens tels que

John Lewis, Duke Ellington ou Ahmad Jamal,

le pianiste revient au fondement même du

jazz : le swing, le blues et l'improvisation. Une

formation minimaliste pour un style qui l’est

tout autant. Qu'il revisite des thèmes anciens

de l'histoire du jazz ou interprète ses propres

compositions, il accède à un niveau de poésie

et de simplicité devenus rares. Entre tradition

et modernité, Yonathan cherche à donner à la

musique plus de relief et de profondeur. De

charger les notes et de rendre le son « théâtral ».

Il crée ainsi un univers poétique, riche en

émotions et en couleurs. Ses compositions,

sobres et subtiles sont marquées par une

grande finesse.

hij een zeldzaam geworden niveau van poëzie en

eenvoud. Yonathan wil zijn muziek tussen traditie

en moderniteit, meer reliëf en diepte geven door

de noten aan te zetten en het geluid

« theatraal » te laten klinken. Zo creëert hij een

poëtisch universum, rijk aan emoties en

klankkleuren. Zijn sobere en subtiele composities

zijn opmerkelijk geraffineerd.

FR Anja Lechner et François Couturier sont deux

artistes de renommée internationale à l’oeuvre

tout aussi originale qu’aventureuse. Réputée

pour son travail en musique classique et

contemporaine, la violoncelliste allemande Anja

Lechner joue également avec des musiciens de

jazz, de musique improvisée et de musiques du

monde, comme Dino Saluzzi. François Couturier,

quant à lui, est un pianiste, improvisateur et

compositeur français qui a collaboré avec des

musiciens tels que John Mc Laughlin, Michel

Portal ou Anouar Brahem. Anja et François sont

tous deux membres du Tarkovsky quartet et ont

également signé en duo l’album Moderato

Cantabile pour le label ECM. Ils nous proposeront

des titres de cet album, notamment des pièces

de Gurdjieff ainsi que des compositions de leur

nouveau programme Lontano.

verzameling.

l’Homme est un groupe acoustique, sensible,

qui exprime sa différence en jouant ses propres

compositions. Ensemble, ils font émerger un style

fait d’incursions dans des territoires musicaux

diversifiés – gitan, flamenco, chanson française et

même classique... Et d’une forme d’approche

décalée teintée d’humour. C’est un travail sur le fil,

entre le simple et le complexe, le léger et le dense.

Des trottoirs de Bretagne aux scènes des plus

grands festivals français et européens, des jams

improvisées aux spectacles mis en scène et en

lumière, Les doigts de l'Homme en ont parcouru

du chemin, et assouvi des envies, en 15 ans de

carrière ! Voilà bien ce que représente ce "Club

Tour", l'envie de plus de proximité avec le public,

l'envie de donner une nouvelle vie à d'anciens

morceaux ; l'envie tout simplement.

NL De akoestische, fijnbesnaarde groep Les doigts

de l’Homme staat open voor alle stromingen en

trekt de kaart van de originaliteit door eigen

composities te spelen. Samen creëren ze een

eigen stijl door te putten uit de meest

gediversifieerde muzikale genres – gipsy,

flamenco, Frans en zelfs klassiek chanson... Hun

aparte benadering is bovendien doorspekt met

humor. Het is dansen op het slappe koord,

zwevend tussen eenvoud en complexiteit, tussen

het luchtige en het zware.

Van Bretoense voetpaden tot de top van de

Franse en Europese festivalpodia: op 15 jaar tijd

legden ze een lange weg af en zagen ze heel wat

van hun dromen in vervulling gaan! In deze "Club

Tour" draait het dan ook om het verlangen naar

een nauwer contact met het publiek en om het

verlangen oude nummers een nieuw leven te

schenken. Kortom, het verlangen staat centraal.

Doigts de l’Homme is a sensitive acoustic group

that expresses its difference by performing its

own compositions. Together, they create a style

that is the result of delving into different musical

territories - gypsy, flamenco, French chanson and

even classical music ... combined with their offbeat

approach tinged with humour. The music they

create sails the crest between simple and

complex, light and intense. From the sidewalks of

Brittany to the stages of the biggest French and

European festivals, from improvised jams to

staged and sophistically lit shows, Les Doigts de

l'Homme have come a long way, and fulfilled a

great many desires in their 15-year career! And this

Club Tour is all about a desire to get closer to their

audiences, the desire to add new life to old pieces;

about desire full stop.

FR Depuis 1998, FES aime flirter avec d’autres

disciplines telles que le théâtre ou le cinéma et

s’adresse à des audiences très diverses : de

l’amateur de jazz averti à un jeune public rock.

L’élément naturel de FES c’est la scène.

Peter Vermeersch rassemble autour de lui un

noyau de musiciens inspirés et inimitables,

formant sans aucun doute le big band à la fois le

plus aventurier et le plus varié de tous les temps.

La musique de FES va de la partition stricte à

l’improvisation exaltante, ses sources d’inspiration

sont étendues, qu’elles soient arrangées,

adaptées ou intégrées aux compositions

originales, elles ajoutent une gamme de climats

et de styles à l’univers éclectique du groupe.

NL Sinds 1998 houdt FES ervan te flirten met

andere disciplines zoals theater of cinema en

richt de groep zich tot een heel uiteenlopend

publiek: van de doorgewinterde jazzamateur tot

het jonge rockpubliek. De biotoop van FES is het

podium.

Peter Vermeersch brengt een kerngroepje van

geïnspireerde en onnavolgbare muzikanten

samen en vormt zo de avontuurlijkste en tegelijk

meest gevarieerde big band aller tijden.

FES kiest zowel voor strikte partituren als voor

opzwepende improvisaties. Hun

inspiratiebronnen zijn veelvuldig en kunnen

zowel gearrangeerd, bewerkt of geïntegreerd

worden in originele composities. Zo voegen ze

een waaier van sferen en stijlen toe aan hun

sowieso eclectisch universum.

EN FES has been flirting with other disciplines

such as theatre and cinema since 1998 and has

been targeting a wide range of audiences: from

discerning jazz lovers to young rock audiences.

And FES’s natural environment is the stage.

Peter Vermeersch brings together a core of

inspired and inimitable musicians that is without

a doubt the most adventurous and varied big

band of all time.

FES particular style of music ranges from strict

score to exhilarating improvisation, it has a vast

array of sources of inspiration and irrespective of

whether they are arranged, adapted or

integrated into original compositions, they add a

range of moods and styles to the eclectic world

in which the group revolves.

nombreux groupes en Belgique et en

Europe, mais il n'a son équivalent nulle part.

C'est ça Aka Moon, c'est cette faculté à se

renouveler et à s'étonner de tout. C'est

cette faculté qu'ont les musiciens à

réinventer, une fois encore, le rythme, la

mélodie, les histoires, les pulsations.

On comprend pourquoi, depuis plus de 25

ans, ils ne s'ennuient jamais une seule

seconde... et nous non plus."

FR Cela fait un moment qu’Antoine Pierre est

devenu une figure incontournable de la nouvelle

génération du jazz belge. Nous sommes très

heureux de l’accueillir avec son projet Urbex dont

le deuxième opus sorti l’année passée a marqué

un vrai tournant pour le groupe : une ambiance

plus hypnotique, des effets sonores électrisants

et des riffs de basse groovy, qui mettent en

valeur l’écriture complexe et symbolique

d’Antoine. On s’attend donc à ce que le groupe

mette le feu à la scène du Senghor, d’autant plus

que pour le River Jazz, le quintet sera

accompagné pour la première fois en concert du

flûtiste Magic Malik, présent sur leur dernier

album.

zich tijdens River Jazz voor het eerst op het

podium zal laten bijstaan door fluitist Magic Malik,

ook te horen op hun laatste album. 

EN It's been a while since Antoine Pierre became

a key figure in the new generation of Belgian

jazzmen. We are very pleased to welcome him

with his Urbex project whose second album

released last year marked a real turning point for

the group: a more hypnotic atmosphere,

electrifying sound effects and groovy bass riffs,

which highlight the complex and symbolic

writing of Antoine. We expect this group to set

the Senghor stage alight, particularly because at

River Jazz the quintet will be accompanied for

the first time in concert by flutist Magic Malik,

who features on their last album.

FR Nicolas a composé la musique de ce trio autour des battements du coeur et autres sons humains, pour que les trois improvisateurs puissent nous proposer leur interprétation de ce qui fait notre musique intérieure. Choix subtil d'un trio peu commun, chaque instrument donne sa voix et sa pulsion au projet, poétique et intimiste.

NL Nicolas baseerde zich voor de composities van dit trio op hartkloppingen en andere menselijke geluiden. De drie improvisatoren van dit allesbehalve banale project presenteren ons dan ook hun interpretatie van onze innerlijke muziek. Elk instrument levert met zijn eigen stem en elan een

bijdrage aan de poëtische, subtiele en intimistische muziek van het drietal.

EN Nicolas composed the music of this trio around heartbeats and other human sounds, so that the three improvisers are able to offer us their version of the elements that comprise our inner music. It is a subtle choice from an unusual trio, with each instrument adding its voice and its impulse to the project that is both poetic and intimate.

FR Louis Armstrong naît dans un quartier

défavorisé de la Nouvelle-Orléans. Un fait

divers va déterminer sa vocation : il est

d’usage, entre Noël et le Nouvel An, de faire

du tapage avec un fusil. Le jeune Louis tire en

l’air. Il est arrêté et incarcéré. Refusant le

désespoir, il apprend la trompette. Une

trompette qui va le mener à la renommée.

NL Louis Armstrong werd geboren in een arme

wijk van New-Orleans. Een fait divers zal zijn

roeping bepalen. Het is hier namelijk de gewoonte,

om tussen Kerstmis en Nieuwjaar, herrie te maken

met een geweer. De jonge Louis schiet in de lucht

en wordt aangehouden en opgesloten. Om de

uitzichtloosheid te verdrijven, leert hij

trompetspelen wat hem later grote faam zal

bezorgen.

EN Louis Armstrong was born in a poor

neighbourhood of New Orleans. One day he

made the headline with an act that was to

determine his vocation. It is customary, between

Christmas and the New Year, to make a racket

with a rifle. The young Louis was shooting in the

air. He was arrested and imprisoned. Refusing to

give in to despair, he learned to play the trumpet.

And the rest, as we say, is history.

Jean-Pol Schroeder, de la Maison du Jazz à

Liège, passionne son public avec des

vidéos d’archives, parfois très rares, et de

nombreuses explications.

form of portraits of musicians who made the

History of Jazz, Jean-Pol Schroeder decided

to return to the fundamentals for the

second year. For this new season, we will

continue our course chronological History of

Jazz, starting with the "Cool Jazz" and

ending with contemporary Jazz.

Jean-Pol Schroeder, of the Maison du Jazz

in Liège, arouses passion among his

audiences thanks to archived videos, some

of which are very rare, and thanks to his

Yves Druart, 40 ans, photographe et libraire

depuis 15 ans, a d'abord été formé en Arts

graphiques à Bruxelles et parallèlement à

l'Académie des Arts d'Uccle en dessin.

Sa découverte du jazz est très récente, sa

musique opérant comme une évidence lui a

donné envie de dessiner quelques musiciens

mythiques des années 50 et 60. Inspirés de films

documentaires, de concerts ou d'interviews

d'époque, ses dessins au pastel et fusain sont des

moments arrêtés où souvent les musiciens ne

jouent pas… Peut-être certains silences insufflent-

ils les notes noires et blanches d'une partition ?

Yves Druart volgde een opleiding grafische kunst

in Brussel en studeerde tekenkunst aan de

Kunstacademie van Ukkel. Vandaag is de

veertigjarige Yves Druart al 15 jaar actief als

fotograaf en boekhandelaar. Zijn heel recente

ontdekking van de onbevangen jazzmuziek zette

hem ertoe aan enkele mythische muzikanten te

tekenen uit de jaren ‘50 en ‘60. Inspiratie voor zijn

pastel- en houtskooltekeningen van moment.

Opnamen van pauzerende muzikanten, haalt

Druard uit documentaires van concerten en

interviews uit deze periode.

Misschien vullen sommige stiltes de zwarte en

witte noten van een partituur op?

EN PASTEL AND CHARCOAL PORTRAITS

Yves Druart is 40 years old and was a

photographer and bookseller for 15 years. He

originally studied Graphic Arts in Brussels whilst

simultaneously studying drawing at the Uccle

Academy of Arts. He only discovered jazz very

recently and the fact that he listened on a regular

basis aroused a desire in him to draw some of the

legendary musicians of the 50s and 60s.

Inspired by documentary films of concerts and

interviews from that time, his pastel and charcoal

drawings are like stills from films in which the

musicians are often not actually playing ...

Perhaps these silent moments represent another

aspect of the black and white notes of a score?
