1. Religious Sensitivities 1. Malaysia is a muslim country (Islam is official religon).

2. Islam prohibits the consumption of pork. Pigs are‘HARAM’ or unclean in Islam.

2. Urban Encroachment 1. Majority of pig farms were started by the Chinesecommunity in Malaysia.

2. The Chinese community generally settled in the vicinity ofmajor towns and cities.

3. As urbanization and development of towns/citiesincrease, more areas are needed for residentialdevelopment.

4. Residences are getting closer and closer to farming areas.

5. Urbanites are not so tolerant to smells, sounds and otherperceived disturbances caused by farming.

• 25 July 2007, Cabinet approved the concept of PigFarming Area & Modern Pig Farming 2007 7 25

a. Negeri Sembilan, Sabah and Sarawak states are approvedto develop Pig Farming Area (PFA)

PFA)b. Other states that are not developing PFAs, mustmodernize the pig industry through Modern Pig Farming(MPF).c. In MPF, all pig farms must be closed house and zerodischarge.
