Fidèle à la mission de la semaine de la Critique, cette 58e

sélection fait le pari de la découverte à travers onze premiers et seconds longs métrages qui révèlent autant de nouveaux regards. Plusieurs cinéastes détournent les codes du genre et les mélangent pour mieux nous surprendre. Véritable sensation du dernier festival de Cannes, J’ai perdu mon corps est un film d’animation d’une grande modernité qui conjugue différents rythmes et tonalités. avec A White, White Day, Hlynur Pálmason réalise un faux polar autour de la quête obsessionnelle de vengeance d’un mari trompé. dans Les héros ne meurent jamais, Aude Léa Rapin joue avec les codes de la fiction et du documentaire pour questionner nos convictions de spectateurs. Quant à lorcan Finnegan, il enferme jesse eisenberg dans Vivarium, huis clos fantastique nourri des angoisses des jeunes trentenaires d’aujourd’hui.

d’autres cinéastes explorent la cellule familiale, véritable concentré de vie qui nous apprend aussi la mort. Litigante de Franco lolli dresse le portrait poignant d’une femme confrontée à un moment crucial de sa vie. dans Ceniza Negra, sofía Quirós ubeda insuffle du réalisme magique au récit initiatique d’une adolescente élevée par ses grands-parents. Enfin, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains de gu xiaogang suit le destin d’une famille chinoise qui s’écoule au rythme de la nature.

Cette programmation est aussi l’occasion de découvrir deux regards singuliers venus du monde arabe. avec son surprenant Miracle du Saint Inconnu, alaa eddine aljem interroge les croyances populaires à travers un conte burlesque aux allures de western. dans le puissant et hypnotique Abou Leila, amin sidi-Boumédiène nous plonge dans les années noires de la guerre civile d’algérie et questionne notre relation à la violence.

Enfin, deux films se démarquent par leur bouleversante justesse de ton. dans Nuestras Madres, récompensé par la Caméra d’or, César diaz revient sur l’épisode tragique des disparus de la dictature militaire du guatemala et redonne une dignité à tous ces visages humiliés. Pour son premier passage derrière la caméra, Hafsia Herzi, comédienne révélée chez abdellatif Kechiche, dresse le portrait tendre et décomplexé d’une femme en quête d’amour. Né d’un besoin impérieux de filmer, Tu mérites un amour porte en lui la spontanéité et l’honnêteté des premiers gestes de cinéma.

Faithful to the mission of the Critics’ Week, this 58th selection takes up the challenge of discovery through eleven first and second feature films that reveal as many new visions. Many filmmakers divert the genre codes and mix them to better surprise us. A genuine sensation of the last Cannes Film Festival, “j’ai perdu mon corps” (i lost my Body) is an animation film of great modernity which combines different rhythms and tonalities. With “a White, White day”, Hlynur Pálmason makes a faux-polar around the obsessional quest for revenge of a cheated husband. In “les héros ne meurent jamais” (Heroes never die), Aude Léa Rapin plays with the codes of fiction and documentary to question our convictions as spectators. As for Lorcan Finnegan, he locks up Jesse Eisenberg in “Vivarium”, a fantastic “huis clos” fed by the anguish of today's young tricenarians.

Other filmmakers explore the family cell, a real life concentrate that also teaches us death. “litigante” by Franco Lolli paints a poignant portrait of a woman confronted to a crucial moment in her life. In “Ceniza negra” (land of ashes), Sofía Quirós Ubeda infuses magical realism to the journey of initiation of an adolescent raised by her grandparents. Finally, “dwelling in the Fuchun mountains” by Gu Xiaogang follows one family’s destiny, rhythmed by the course of nature.

Cecilia de Arce est réalisatrice et scénariste diplômée de l’école 3IS en 2015. Son film de fin d’études, Une sur Trois, est sélectionné au Festival de Clermont-Ferrand la même année et reçoit le prix d’interprétation féminine.

Cecilia de Arce is a director and screenwriter who graduated from 3iS in 2015. Her graduation film, “Une sur Trois”, was selected at the Clermont-Ferrand Festival the same year and won the Award for Best Actress.

Névine, a secondary school monitor, is fully committed to her somewhat thankless day job, dealing with teachers, administration and students. Logan, a pupil she is fond of, insists on getting a cap back from lost and found. She has no idea of the consequences of her gesture.

This program is also an opportunity to discover two unique points of views from the Arab world. With his surprising “unknown saint”, Alaa Eddine Aljem questions popular beliefs through a Western-style burlesque tale. In the powerful and hypnotic “abou leila”, Amin Sidi-Boumédiène plunges us into the dark years of the Algerian civil war and questions our relationship to violence.

Finally, two films are distinguished by their overwhelming tone accuracy. In “nuestras madres” (our mothers), winner of the Caméra d’or, César Diaz returns to the tragic episode of the disappeared under the military dictatorship of Guatemala and restores the dignity of all these humiliated faces. In her first role behind the camera, Hafsia Herzi, the actress revealed by Abdellatif Kechiche, draws the tender and uninhibited portrait of a woman in search of love. Born of a compelling need to film, “tu mérites un amour” (you deserve a lover) carries in it the spontaneity and honesty of cinema’s first gestures.

Away from prying eyes, a young unmarried couple retreat to the depth of a desolate run-down Egyptian seaside resort, to make love. The power dynamic between them is tested, when the girl reveals she wants their relationship to end.

Né à Rabat au Maroc, Alaa Eddine Aljem étudie le cinéma à l’ESAV Marrakech puis à l’INSAS à Bruxelles en master réalisation, production et scénario. Alaa réalise plusieurs courts-métrages de fiction dont Les Poissons du Désert en 2015 qui remporte le grand prix du meilleur court-métrage, le prix de la critique et du scénario au Festival National du film au Maroc et est sélectionné dans de nombreux festivals internationaux.

Trained at ESAV Marrakech and INSAS in Brussels, Alaa Eddine Aljem directed several short films, among them “The Desert Fish” (2015), which gained great acclaim in the film festival circuit and took the Critics, Screenwriting and Grand Prize at the Moroccan National Film Festival. “The Unknown Saint” is Aljem’s debut feature. With this project, Alaa was named by ‘Screen International’ as one the Five Arab Stars of Tomorrow.

Moments before his capture by police, a thief digs a grave to hide a bag of money. Released from prison years later he returns to retrieve the bag, only to find a shrine to an Unknown Saint build directly over his loot, and a brand new village constructed all around it.

It is a story about a cold relationship between a father and his son. Their bond, plagued by indifference, disintegrates completely.

Hlynur Pálmason started out as a visual artist and evolved his career later into filmmaking by pursuing an education at the Danish National Film School. His debut feature “Winter Brothers” world premiered in the main competition of the Locarno Film Festival in 2017, where it won 4 awards and since then, has been sold to over 20 territories.

In a remote Icelandic town, an off-duty police chief begins to suspect a local man of having had an affair with his late wife, who died in a tragic accident two years earlier. Gradually his obsession for finding out the truth accumulates and inevitably begins to endanger himself and his loved ones. A story of grief, revenge and unconditional love.

Le premier film de Moin Hussein Holy Thursday a été financé par Creative England et projeté à l’international. Son second court Real Gods Require Blood a été présenté à la Semaine de la Critique en 2017, et a été nommé dans la catégorie Meilleur Court Métrage au BFI London Film Festival en 2017. Son troisième court, Naptha, est financé par Film4 et Film London et a été projeté pour la première fois au BFI London Film Festival en 2018.

Moin Hussain’s first short “Holy Thursday” was funded by Creative England and screened internationally. His second short “Real Gods Require Blood” premiered at Semaine de la Critique 2017 and was nominated for Best Short Film at the BFI London Film Festival 2017. His third short, “Naptha”, is funded by Film4 and Film London and premiered at the 2018 BFI London Film Festival.

Faraz’s quiet life working at an isolated petrol station is turned upside down when his ageing father Malik begins to speak in a long-forgotten language and insists on returning back home.

Lorcan a étudié le graphisme à Dublin avant de se tourner vers l’animation et la fiction cinématographique.Son court métrage fantastique Foxes a été projeté pour la première fois à SXSW en 2011 et a remporté plusieurs prix. La première de Without Name, son premier long métrage, un conte de fées psychédélique a eu lieu au TIFF en 2016. Vivarium est son deuxième long métrage.

In search of a starter home, a young couple follow a mysterious estate agent and get trapped in a strange housing development.

Mena lives alone with her daughter Clara. Today is Clara’s seventh birthday. Despite her limited financial resources, Mena still manages to organise a birthday party. But after a phone call from her mother, she becomes distraught and anxious.

Born in 1982, Amin Sidi-Boumédiène obtained in 2005 a degree in film directing from CLCF (Conservatoire Libre du Cinéma Français) in Paris. His first short film “Tomorrow, Algiers ?” was selected in many festivals all around the world. “All Djazira”, his second short, won the best Arab film award at the Abu Dhabi film Festival. “Abou Leila” is his first feature film.

Born in Guatemala in 1978, César Diaz joins the screenwriting course at La FEMIS after studying in Mexico and Belgium. He has been editing fiction and documentaries for over ten years. In a street in Paris, a stranger recognises in Joachim a soldier who died in Bosnia on 21st August 1983. Thing is, this is the very day Joachim was born: 21st August 1983! Présenté en clôture de la 58e Semaine de la Critique, ce film est le premier de sa Trilogie de Peinture Chinoise en Rouleau "Mille Miles le long de la Rivière Yangtsé”.

Gu Xiaogang was born in Fuyang, Hangzhou. While studying Costume Design and Marketing in university, he discovered filmmaking and started to be interested in documentaries. His first feature, “Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains”, was shot during the four seasons over the course of two years. It is the first film of his Scroll Painting Trilogy, “A Thousand Miles Along the Eastern Yangtze”.

Graduated in filmmaking at the University of Paris 8, Camille Degeye joined the associative labs L'etna and L'abominable where she trained as a self-taught analog filmmaker. She is currently developing a new short film at the musée d'Orsay, “The Delft Disaster”, as well as her first feature film.

Face à la crise sociale, Chiken, bonze bouddhiste, s'investit dans plusieurs activités, comme le soutien téléphonique aux suicidaires, à son temple de yamanashi. À Fukushima, son vieux camarade ryûgyô, dont le temple a été ravagé par le tsunami, vit dans un préfabriqué et travaille sur les chantiers.

Après le lycée, Katsuya Tomita travaille comme ouvrier et chauffeur routier, investissant ses économies pour réaliser des films dans sa ville natale dans lesquels il fait jouer ses amis. Son troisième film Saudade (2011) ainsi que Bangkok Nites (2016), son quatrième film sur le post-colonialisme, tourné en Thaïlande et au Laos avec des locaux, sont invités au Festival de Locarno.

After his A-levels Katsuya Tomita worked as a labourer and lorry driver. In his hometown, he invests the money he had saved to make films in which he has his friends act. His third film “Saudade” (2011) and “Bangkok Nites” (2016) - his fourth film on post-colonialism, shot in Thailand and Laos with locals - screened at the Locarno Festival.

To address the social crisis, Chiken - a buddhist monk - throws himself into various tasks such as a suicide helpline, in his temple in Yamanashi. In Fukushima, his old mate Ryûgyô - whose temple was wrecked by the tsunami - lives in a portacabin and works on construction sites.
