By Mike Larson A2 Journal Last season, the Father Gabriel Richard football team boasted one of the best quar- terbacks in the region in Josh Herbeck. The senior signal caller was one of the best passers in the state, and on Saturday after- noon, his replacement, Don Eaton, seemed to channel his predecessor. On Saturday, the Fighting Irish hosted undefeated Macomb Lutheran North and beat the Mustangs handily, 27-14. The win was large in part to the play of Eaton, who finished the game by passing for 217 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His first touchdown came on the team’s opening posses- sion. Just three plays into the drive, Eaton aired out the ball and found receiver Stevie Tracy for a 40-yard touchdown. “We came into the game looking to run more,” Gabriel Richard head coach Brian Lemons said. “But as the game went on, we saw what the defense was giv- ing us. So we took it. We were able to pass a little more than we expected, and we took adva ntage of it.” When the Mustangs took over, the team showed why they had yet to lose a game. Lutheran North marched the ball down the field, giv- ing the ball to running back Zachariah Bielecki, who fin- ished the game with 171 yards on 22 carries. However, the Irish kept the Mustangs out of the endzone when Eaton pick ed off a pass to give Gabriel Richard the ball back. In the second quarter, Eaton and the Irish went back to work, scoring another touch- down when the quarterback found Nathan Donnellon with a 33-yard pass. The 12-play drive was kept alive by receiver Matt Wagner, who made catche s of 20 and 17 yards. Kicker Ryan Jenkins hit his second consecutive extra point, and the Irish took a 14-0 lead. With possession late in the half, it looked like the Irish would cruise into the break with a two-touchdown lead. However, after an Eaton interception, the Mustangs marched down the field and scored on a 3-yard run from Bielecki. The score came right after the running back burned the Irish defense with a 64- yard run. After the break, neither team was able to get much going, as both were plagued by stalling offenses in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter though, Richard went back to its original game plan, and started running the ball.
