I would change juryforms so instead of ‘guilty or not guilty’ thechoice would be ‘proven or not proven.’” Eiglarsh went on to enlist the help of the

audience to hold a mock trial highlightinghow difficult it can be to obtain convictionsdue to lack of sufficient evidence. Heemphasized, “Ultimately, it’s the qualityand quantity of evidence that will affect theoutcome of cases more than anything else.” Before networking proceedings were ad-

Being cranky is a feeling. You mightnot even know that you are cranky. Youmay just feel testy, irritable, cantankerous,snappish, ill-tempered, bad-tempered orshort-tempered and a bit peevish or crotch-ety.

What makes you cranky? Make a list ofthe things you feel cranky about in that verymoment. Sometimes, it is a thought, a fearor an actual event. Get to know your trig-gers and what makes you upset and unhap-py. Get to know your vulnerabilities. Learnto identify what is making you feel peevish,contentious, querulous and irascible.

Crankiness is usually born out of frus-tration and conflicting desires. Frustrationbecause you cannot do something you wantto do and frustration because you do nothave control over the inconvenient inter-ruptions in your life or daily routine. Thingscan be a definite annoyance especiallywhen things are out of your hands and theyare no longer pleasant or enjoyable.

Crankiness may be born out of rebel-lion because you are being forced tochange, adapt, tolerate and accept less thanan ideal situation.

Do not let crankiness escalate intoanger because something has been takenaway from you. And you feel that you willno longer be able to do what you like, orwant or what you are used to, because ofthese outside changes to your routine orlife.

The most important thing you can do isto tell others. Announce your mood. Warnyour loved ones, family and friends, co-workers and boss. Let them know that it isnot them, it is you. Tell them when youfeel cranky.

Talk to yourself, “What is really both-ering me?” “What can I do about it?” Keepit in perspective.

It is OK to accept sympathy. It can bevery helpful to have others agree with youand commiserate with you. Remember thatthese feelings will pass eventually.

Let it go. Redirect your thoughts ontosomething else pleasant and unrelated. Dosomething fun to change your mood.

Jews throughout the world revereAbraham Lincoln as a hero of unsurpasseddistinction. In fact, a street in Jerusalem isnamed after him. Several of Lincoln’s closefriends and supporters during the Civil Warwere Jewish, including Simon Wolf.According to historians David G. Dalin andAlfred J. Kolatch, Lincoln’s associationwith Wolfe was widely publicized after anincident that occurred during the Civil Warinvolving a young Jewish soldier who wasaccused of desertion and was to be shot thefollowing day. Simon went to see Lincoln toplead for the life of the soldier. Simonadvised that the soldier was not a deserter,but had simply left the camp without per-mission “to see his dying mother.”

Lincoln advised that he could do noth-ing to help the young soldier becauseSecretary of War Stanton threatened to

resign if I pardoned another deserter. Simonthen appealed to Lincoln’s compassionatenature:

“What would you have done in theboy’s place? If your dying mother had sum-moned you to her bedside to receive her lastmessage before her soul would be sum-moned to its Maker, would you have ratherhave been a deserter to her who gave youbirth or a deserter in law but not in fact, tothe flag to which you had sworn allegiance?

Simon had reached into Lincoln’s heart,as the president was devoted to his belovedmother who died when he was a youngsterand the stepmother who thereafter raisedhim. After Lincoln’s election and prior to histrip to Washington, he went back toKentucky to visit to his aging stepmother,who said of him that he was the finest boyshe had ever met. Lincoln reflected onSimon’s words, called in his secretary and“ordered that a telegram be sent to halt theexecution.” The soldier soon returned to hisregiment and in the 1864 battle of ColdHarbor was killed while leading a chargewith an American flag held aloft in his hand.When the president learned of the soldier’sheroism, he said: ‘I thank God for havingdone the right thing.’”

So, they had a catchyslogan that made you ex-pect that when disasterstruck they would beneighborly, or stand besideyou, or take everythinginto their good, capablehands. But now that you

need them to defend or pay your claim, doesit feel like your good neighbor has packedup and left the barrio? Know that Floridahas tough laws to protect consumers againstinsurance company misconduct like refus-ing to defend you when you make a claim;unreasonably delaying the payment of yourclaim or improperly dropping your cover-age without reason or warning. Also knowthat insurance companies don’t want you toknow that you have these protections. Sohere’s what they’re not telling you:For most types of insurance claims insur-

ance companies are required to pay you in-terest if your claim payment is more than 30to 60 days overdue. If your claim paymentwas unreasonably delayed, check that inter-est was also paid.

If a claim is made against you, immedi-ately notify your insurance company to ac-cept and defend the claim. If they refuse todefend the claim or ignore it, know that theymay have to pay your attorney’s fees if youhire a lawyer to challenge them.If your claim is denied, delayed or under-

paid, have a lawyer look at it – FOR FREE.Most lawyers handling insurance cases willwork on a percentage of what they recoverand don’t charge any upfront fees or re-tainer. Better yet, in many cases the insur-ance company may be have to pay yourattorney’s fees ON TOP OF YOUR recov-ery, meaning the lawyer charges you noth-ing. My wife Lauren and I like to think of our-selves as “foodies” and when we stumbleupon an incredible dining experience, welike to share it with the world. If you haven’talready heard, Chef Ben Huselton, who wasawarded 2013 “Best Chef America,” hasjoined together with one of New York’smost famous sushi artists, Kevin Z, to opena new restaurant in The Village at Gulf-stream Park. Port of Call: Modern AmericanCuisine, better known as POC, is a fusionrestaurant that brings together modernAmerican cuisine and exquisite sushi cre-ations, with a fun tapas style theme.Feeling adventurous, we left our dining

fate up to our server and played a game ofCulinary Roulette. She asked a few questionsabout preference and allergies and proceededto hand select some personal favorites fromthe menu.Admittedly, I am not too adventurous

when it comes to my drink, so I ordered sin-gle malt, of which they had a vast collectionfrom which to choose. My wife, less pickyin this subject, had the bartender whip up afruity concoction in a martini glass, and allwas well in the world. After a few sips and alittle conversation, the food began to arriveand the presentation was show stopping.

Our server brought us two soups – one ofthem was a cold tomato gazpacho, splitdown the middle with red and yellow tomatoto form a Ying Yang shape in the bowl. Thelobster bisque, presented in an incrediblyunique fashion, was served with the lobsteralone in an empty bowl and the bisque waspoured over the top at your table (whoa!).For appetizers, we were served a Water-

melon Asparagus & Mozzarella Salad andFoie Gras on a bed of Jameson flavoredShredded Pear. The salad was artfully dis-played and very refreshing, while the FoieGras was surprisingly salty sweet. We weresufficiently teased and eager to see what wasin store for our main course.Queue the Glazed Beef Short Ribs with

Whipped Carrots! Having my best tablemanners in mind, I reached for my fork andknife, only to discover that a knife would notbe necessary. The meat was so tender youcould have pulled it apart with a spoon! Def-initely among the top five short ribs I’ve everhad. Needless to say, manners went out thewindow as I cleaned the plate with my bread.I was so engulfed with my short ribs, that Ibarely stopped to make note of my wife’sgorgeous sushi platter that was so well pre-sented that it could have (and probably has)won an award.We were stuffed, but decided to wait

around long enough to let our food settle sowe could see what dessert masterpieces werein store for us. What? You didn’t think wewould skip dessert, did you? I could go on andon describing dessert, but instead, you willjust have to trust me when I tell you to orderthe Deconstructed Carrot Cake with CreamCheese Ice Cream and Spicy Pecans. Youmight also want to get the homemadeMango,Watermelon and Mojito sorbet assortment.As we waddled to the car, we were already

planning our next visits (yes, visits – plural).We want to make sure we go for POC’s $21weekend brunch as well as the weekday“order guaranteed in 15 minutes” lunch. The all-new 2013 RAV4 is the fourth-gen-eration of Toyota’s popular crossover utilityvehicle. The new design features a sleek-sloping roofline, an aggressive character line,sculpted front and rear fenders and boldlyproportioned taillights. The new interior hasa premium, sophisticated look with soft-touch accents and driver-centric controls.

In a break with its heritage, RAV4switched from its side-hinged rear door to aconvenient roof-hinged liftgate, with a space-saver spare tire stored beneath the cargofloor. Standard on the Limited grade is a one-touch power rear liftgate with driver-selec-table memory height settings. There’s two-row seating for five and a host of availablein-cabin technologies.

RAV4 offers a balance of performance andall-around capability, including excellentcargo capacity, striking design, eight stan-dard airbags and a broad array of standardfeatures. It’s available in three grades — LE,

XLE and Limited.For power, there’s a fuel-efficient four-

cylinder engine mated to a new six-speedtransmission. There are several powertraintechnologies, including a 2.5-liter four-cylin-der that produces 176 hp at 6,000 rpm and 172pounds-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm. Theoptional V-6 of the previous-generation RAV4has been discontinued. A six-speed transmis-sion with Sequential Shift replaces the previ-ous four-speed automatic. First and secondgear ratios have been optimized for around-town performance. To keep engine revs lowerat highway speeds and enhance fuel mileage,fifth and sixth gears are overdrives.

RAV4 front-wheel-drive models have anEPA-rated fuel efficiency of 24/31 mpg,while all-wheel-drive models get 22/29mpg. A new Eco mode is designed to pro-mote more efficient driving and enhancefuel efficiency.

The new RAV4 also delivers a moredynamic drive, with new technologies like aSport Mode with Dynamic Torque ControlAWD, enhancements in suspension perform-ance and optimized electric power steering.The spring rates have been enhanced and theshock absorbers have been optimally tunedto enhance handling characteristics. RAV4has a MacPherson strut front suspension,double-wishbone rear suspension and four-

wheel disc brakes. The LE rides on 17-inchsteel wheels, XLE on 17-inch alloys and theLimited on 18-inch alloys.

In both front- and all-wheel drive RAV4’sSport Mode sharpens shift timing, throttleresponse and steering response. When down-shifting the RAV4 six-speed automatic trans-mission in “S” Mode, engine revs rise with aclearly audible “blip,” adding to the drivingexperience.

In the RAV4 with AWD, Dynamic TorqueControl AWD has additional benefits. Whenturning into and through a corner, power is

sent to the rear wheels to help enhance cor-nering performance, detecting steering angleand lack of yaw rate in Sport Mode (anddetecting lack of yaw rate in Normal and EcoMode).

The MSRP on the 2013 Toyota RAV4ranges from $23,300 to $28,410.
