Profiles in Healing:

Historical Anecdotes That Have Lead To Healing Between Nations, Races

and Religious Communities

This course reviews and explores the meaning of a number of historical anecdotes that have contributed to healing between previously warring nations, races and religious communities. It focuses on the actions of individuals who rise above normal human nature to set an example of reconciliation as an alternative to revenge and reparation. As an example, it will feature incidents that have led to the acceptance of Germany back into the community of nations after a separation that included two world wars. The unlikely cast of characters includes soldiers singing Christmas carols across the no-man’s land of certain death in World War I; a captured high-ranking German general who speaks the truth in captivity, a group of students at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich who speak out against the Nazi regime; an oboist at the Pittsburgh Symphony who “invades.” the home of Richard Strauss in Garmisch at the conclusion of World War, II; a woman sent to a Nazi concentration camp with her sister, who subsequently opens a rehabilitation center for former Nazi collaborators; and a candy bomber. This course is offered at Saint Maximilian Kolbe consistent with the Extraordinary Year Jubilee of Mercy. The course is normally offered as five 70-minute sessions, but consider taking just the first introductory session and if there is sufficient interest, the remaining sessions will be offered. The first introductory session will be held on Wednesday, February 17th at 7 PM in the Maximilian Room. Additional sessions would be held on February 24, March 2, 9, 16. If you plan to attend, please call the Rectory to RSVP.

PARISH TWINNING PROGRAM OF THE AMERICAS

Interested in contributing to education in Haiti, learning about a new culture, and experiencing spiritual growth?

Members of parishes across America have increasingly offered time, services, and funds through partnerships with parishes in Haiti through a program called Parish Twinning of the Americas. (www.parishprogram.org) Through this movement of lay-based giving, Haitian and American parishioners work together for better health, education, and spiritual growth in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. A small group of St Max parishioners have joined an effort to support a parish in Haiti’s remote and often-overlooked Central Plateau that is in desperate need of support to continue the functioning of a high school. The high school was built through one such partnership between The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (TCIC) in Memphis, TN and The Parish of Layaye, Haiti. Funding to keep the doors of the school open provides hundreds of young men and women the opportunity for life-changing education that would otherwise be impossible.

A lifelong parishioner of St. Max, John McGreevy, began travelling to Layaye, Haiti in 2007. Since that time, he has travel to Haiti on 10 occasions and has dedicated his studies to better understand what causes poverty in Haiti and how to work ‘tet ansamn’ (‘with heads together’) to improve the quality of life. He is currently completing a PhD in Anthropology at the University of Georgia with a focus on fighting vulnerability of Haitian households to disasters.

If you are interested in learning more about this program with Haiti, the problems faced by the people of Layaye, and the many means available to contribute to education in Layaye (through prayer, funds, or even travelling with a group of parishioners to rural Haiti), watch the bulletin for a Lenten effort to increase involvement with and support to TCIC in their Parish Twinning mission with Layaye. In the meantime, if you are interested in learning more about this mission or volunteering your time or resources to this worthy effort, please contact us by phone or email at [email protected] 484-995-0466 or [email protected] 610-202-7587

St. Maximilian Kolbe will be giving a portion of the Ash Wednesday

collection to this project. Please be generous.

DON’T COME EMPTY HANDED!

Families in Action continues to partner with the ACT in Faith of Greater West Chester Food Pantry on behalf of St Maximilian Kolbe Parish. Each month we will continue to collect items to share with our neighbors in need. Last month, because of your kindness and generosity we were able to donate well over 100 packages of toothpaste. In February we hope to gather several hundred bottles of shampoo (no conditioner please) as we attend at daily or weekly mass together. Shampoo of any brand or size will be gratefully accepted. They can be left in the RED Families in Action bin by the front door of the church or in the Kids in Action bin in the Copy Room of the school. For more information or for other opportunities to volunteer or donate needed items, please go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090e4faea96-community or contact Lisa Bice at [email protected] to be added to our mailing list.

Change for Life Reminder Next Sunday February 7th will be the final Sunday for the “Change for Life” fund raising effort. A secure receptacle will be available for the deposit of your filled baby bottle at that time. If you would like to continue saving your change or make further contributions, this receptacle will be available in the room behind the church store for your future deposits. If you have a bottle to return after the receptacle has been removed, it can be brought to the rectory office. Thank you for your generous support.
