Les 19 èmes Journées internationales de Viticulture du GiESCO 2015 de Pech Rouge – Montpellier se sont magnifiquement déroulées aux dires de tous les participants, sur les plans scientifique, technique et logistique. Merci aux organisateurs, aux sponsors en tout genre et aux quelques 250 participants. Ce GiESCO 19 laisse une trace éditoriale importante de grande qualité sous forme des Comptes Rendus n°19 qui sont illustrés ci-dessous. Le PAV est fier d’en avoir été la cheville ouvrière.  JOINED MEETING OF THE GiESCO

SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE AND GENERAL ASSEMBLY (Pech Rouge, 5 June 2015)

Presents : Philippe Abbal, Ricardo Araneda, Claudio Bongin, Alain Carbonneau, Giovanni Cargnello, Jorge Ducati, Bruno Holzapfel, Patrice Lallemand, Carlos Lopes, Juliette Maisons, Franco Meggio, Yerko Moreno, Vittorino Novello, Hernàn Ojeda, Jorge Perez Peña, Andrea Pitacco, Jorge Prieto, Jorge Queiroz, Andrew Reynolds, Adamo Domenico Rombolà, Thibaut Scholasch, Paola Tessarin, Laurent Torregrosa, Giuseppe Tumbarello. Pre-meeting communication : Peter Clingeleffer, Javier Tardaguila. Conclusions check-up : 1) Evaluation of the GiESCO 19 :

According to everybody the 19th GiESCO International meeting of Viticulture was a great congress, for its scientific value, its technological interest and its organization and animation. Nevertheless it is always possible to improve some aspects. The Committee has listed the following points :

- Posters: next time we will allow a “flash oral presentation” (1-2mn each) of the posters by the authors to give more attention to such works ;

- Oral communications: we will give 10mn/presentation and concentrate all discussions at the end of the session (or half-session) ;

- Maps: general maps of the region are not sufficient; it is better to show the itinerary of the visits ; - Wine sector: a formal introductive presentation of the wine sector of the country and the regions is useful, not only a

‘get together’ invitation ; - Wi Fi access is required everywhere, conference room included ; - Some paper to take notes is also needed in the bag ; - Lunches: all were very nice, except the lunch in Montpellier on 4 June which has “minimum food”.

2) Organization of the GiESCO 20 :

The proposition announced in Porto in 2013 is definitively adopted: INTA Mendoza in cooperation with its local partners is designed to hold the GiESCO 20. The coordinator is Jorge Perez Peña. The meeting will be organized within the two first weeks of November 2017. All the facilities, professional supports and scientific environment are present. Pre or post-congress tours will be organized in Argentina, Chile, others countries eventually. 3) Previsions of the GiESCO 21 & 22 :

Peter Clingeleffer confirmed (cf. Porto), the availability of Australia- CSIRO to hold a GiESCO meeting in 2019 no later than in 2021. Javier Tardaguila is also willing to hold a GiESCO meeting in La Rioja after Mendoza or Adelaïde. We must find the best places for 2019 and 2021. 4) Priorities of the GiESCO in Viticulture :

Everybody agrees to consider the GiESCO congress as an “international meeting of Viticulture’, in so far as it is very important to allow a ‘transversal’ approach while keeping the heart of Vine Ecophysiology and Management. It is also interesting to develop the activity of our Academy of Vine and Wine to interact with Œnology (invited speakers) and Social Sciences. But it is also important to define some strategic actions or themes for the following years within the general field of Viticulture. Alain Carbonneau is asked to launch a survey among members to define those priorities which will be key-subjects for the GiESCO 20. NB: As examples of priorities we can already think to :

- The application of the GiESCO charter of Sustainable Viticulture, - The elaboration of new integrated sustainable models based on resistant varieties, - The management of water and temperature in the context of the climate change…

5) General activities of the Association :  

The international meetings of Viticulture are the main operations of the GiESCO; the optimal rhythm is between 2 and 3 years. The website ‘www.giesco.org’ continues to be the permanent tool for contacts and information (see the Newsletter); it will be updated soon. The email of the secretary is: [email protected], for any contact. The PAV (Publications et Actualités Vitivinicoles) Journal edited in French and English and published on the internet every month, is now fully integrated in the GiESCO Association: it must be more used by the members, reminding that some articles published in the GiESCO proceedings can be more achieved and reviewed if they are published in the PAV. 6) Budget of the Association & new managing :

The global budget of the Association is secured by the capital given to the GiESCO by the “Progrès Agricole et Viticole” SARL when the PAV was integrated in the Association. Nevertheless, the editing activity of the PAV Journal is not balanced due to an insufficient number of subscriptions; main costs are the invoices of the Secretary, Sandrina Luque (self-manager), and the website maintenance. Therefore, the members are invited to promote the PAV as authors, subscribing members, communication people. At that stage, the general budget is adopted without any opposition. But, a new way to manage the subscriptions to the Association and the Journal as well is adopted. At the next GiESCO meeting (Mendoza 2017) there will be :

- normal registration fees for subscribing members of the GiESCO Association and PAV Journal; - slightly more expansive registration fees for subscribing members of the GiESCO Association and not to the PAV

Journal; - more expansive registration fees for non-subscribing people attending the congress, this extra-cost being computed to

compensate for the main part of the deficit of the current budget of the Association; suitable structure must be used to transfer that amount on the Association bank account.

7) Preparation of renewing the Board in 2017:

According to the statutes of the Association, the present Board will have to be renewed in 2017. The President will launch the procedure by the end of 2016. Since the end of 2017, he wishes to be ‘Honorary President’ while continuing to work for the GiESCO and the PAV, but in cooperation with a new President and within a new Board which also must be reorganized. He may be maintained as Treasurer. This report is validated by the attendants of this joined meeting through email exchanges.”

   L’Académie internationale de la Vigne et du Vin du GiESCO a aussi été présente par des conférences originales et des manifestations conviviales et artistiques. Elle a créé sa confrérie ‘Scientia & Amicitia’, et apporté un peu de poésie, d’ambiance musicale grâce à Philippe Abbal et un cadre pictural (repris dans les annonces) grâce au tableau de Marie-Annette Carbonneau qui illustre la cuvée de Pech Rouge (Grenache noir, Syrah, Petit Verdot) nommée ‘Rouge Falaise / Red Cliff / Barranco Rojo’. Voici ce tableau avec les poèmes dédiés à cette cuvée originale.

Le tortueux Grenache n’en finit de vieillir…

Accroché aux rochers, il livre sa substance,

Sa chaleur, sa finesse que l’on peut ressentir

Au milieu des épices et des fruits d’abondance…

La Syrah s’enracine, s’imprégnant du fruit noir

Et du bleu de la mer qui à ses pieds la berce ;

Son raisin succulent mûrit jusques au soir…

La fraîcheur des bosquets à la fin se déverse

Quand le Petit Verdot, serpentant sur le sable,

Offre le vert écrin pour qu’à tous ce vin plaise,

Ravive sa couleur, et le corps vénérable

Du Dieu assis en haut de la rouge falaise !...

NB : Red Cliff est le nom de la cuvée sélectionnée de Pech Rouge, clin d’œil à l’international, au site géologique insulaire de la Clape, et à l’Unité de Pech Rouge.

Its fully tasty grape matures until the night…

When Petit Verdot snaking on the sand beach,

Offers the green jewel for the pleasure of each,

Revives the color and the body so rich

Of the great sitting God on the top of red cliff !...

El tortuoso Garnacha nunca termina de envejecer…

Aferrado a la roca, que le entrega su sustancia,

Su calidez, su fineza que se puede entender

En medio de especias y frutas en abundancia …

La Syrah enraíza, empapada de frutos azabache

Y el azul del mar que a sus pies la mece;

Sus uvas sabrosas maduran hasta la noche…

La frescura de las arboledas al final se esparce

Cuando el Petit Verdot, sobre la arena se desliza,

Ofrece el verde entorno para que este vino guste a todos,

Reaviva su color, y el cuerpo venerable se divisa

Del Dios sentado en la cima del barranco rojo!
