Everyone is “okay”. Everyone has a personal idea of wellness. Everyone
deserves to make this idea true. Personal abilities are different and are
all “okay”
In Italy today disabled people cannot yet access every activity and location, including wellness, holistic and sporting centers. “La Quarta Via” was born in Rome in the year 2014 to address this problem. On the Fourth Way, disabled people can practice everything and receive (very cheap) services for the psycho-physical wellness, as well as non-disabled people. We offer Chinese martial arts (Kung fu, Taiji, QiGong), dance, naturopathic medicine and much more.
We worked all around Italy organizing workshops, lectures, conferences and wellness treatments. One year ago we stopped in Tuscany, (in Prato, near Florence), to start a life together, and we opened in our home a little space for the association, where everyone, including disabled people, could find wellness thanks to the harmony between oriental and occidental traditions, in an holistic approach, first of all thanks to sport! Today we are so glad to be here to represent Italy and in particular the city of Prato for Insport+ project.
Our founder Lorenzo was trained since 1999 in oriental disciplines in a famous Italian thaoist school. His master conceived a method to teach thaoism, the “Xiu Zhen Dao” method, and readapted it to disability (including Chinese martial arts) when Lorenzo became his student. Today Lorenzo is himself a master, and in the association “La Quarta Via” he developed a new method, to teach thaoist practices to all kind of people, also for all psycho-physical disabilities: the “Xiu Mhen ThienDao” method (from Chinese, “Door of the heavenly way”).
Martial arts are at the basis of this method. Every discipline and exercise can be readapted to the needs of a huge variety of people.
- Wushu Kung Fu (internal styles) and, consequently, TaiJi - QiGong - DianGong… ecc. - Wushu Kung Fu (external styles) and, consequently, Wing Chun - Tan Lan Chuan - BaGua-Zang Chuan -
Shaolin Chuan - Xiu Zhen Dao - Zhen Fa - Self defense. Master Lorenzo Donati conceived his Kung Fu style from readjustment of external styles.
Everyone, in particular disabled people, practicing this arts can have many benefits regarding the body-mind-spirit balance and the
awareness and control of the body movements. This is very important for people’s wellness and health.
HEALTH, with chinese medicine, naturopathic medicine, FangZhong (ancient chinese sexual hygiene), phytotherapy…
CULTURE, through the spread of oriental traditions, ways and philosophy to adults and children, in workshops, lessons and
conferences opened to every kind of people.
Association “La Quarta Via” has many partners among associations and schools sharing its message.
Some of these are:
The CSWI River School was founded in 1977 and is the first school in Europe to teach Wushu Kungfu. It promotes Wushu from the point of view of both education and training.
The School does also folkloric representations and philosophy
workshops about Chinese culture, in order to promote and raise awareness of these issues.
Master: Maurizio Tronconi
Dojo “Shiro Saigo” was founded by master Luigi Moscato in 1975. Association “Shiro Saigo” was born in 1984.
This school teaches AIKIDO-KUNG FU-TAI CHI CHUAN-TAE KWON
DO-WING CHUN-KATORI SHINTO RYU-JU JUTSU- YOGA-KRAV MAGA at international levels. Master Lorenzo Donati teaches self defense also in this school. Two Down boys have been trained by master Luigi Moscato since 30 years ago.

Today we want to have a debate and talk to everyone about inclusion
and how all people can participate in sport and other physical activities within our
democratic societies.
First ,it would be good to define what we mean by inclusion…
Ah maybe we have a communication problem….
Where are you from ? Do you speak English? Do you speak French ? Do you speak another language ? Bulgarian, Hungarian, German, Italian, Spanish ? How can we be inclusive ?
How can we debate ?
This room is perhaps not ideal. I am here and you are there Which language can we use ?
Lets try it out ?
Do you like sport ? Do you like wrestling? Do you like swimming ? Do you like Cycling ? Le Tour de France ? Le Tour de Yorkshire? Do you like Football? Do you like Paris St Germain? REAL Madrid ? Le Stade rennais !?
Well can we improve things ?
What can we do better ? Ah yes who speaks English and French ? Perhaps they can sit near people that speak
French ; OR …
Let me introduce myself
Ah this is difficult ! C’est difficile ! To help you understand. I will draw a picture.

Human needs: identity
Singularity : To be able to express ourselves and develop as unique individuals
To embody and celebrate what is unique in me. While at the same time Share and develop with others, feel part of a
family, group, a community, a culture, a fellowship
Human understanding and categorizing
To make sense of the world; to know how to act we often need to put things and people in categories; to regroup people and things… But what criteria should we use and why and when ?
• Diversity • Equality • Non- discrimination • Compensation
Principles Recognition: Celebrate Difference
Similar Treatment +/ - Specific Treatment +/-
Reduce differences
Policy based on redistribution or an ethic of recognition
As explored and explicated by Nancy Fraser Policy can highlight sameness and aim at reduction of differences OR Highlight difference and Recognize and celebrating difference.
114
In social policy
We tend to adopt a universalist approach and aim at reducing difference
Treat people equally – Non-discrimination But we can also celebrate and seek recognition for
our differences Recognize and treat people with equal respect And its very human to want to be special, but at
the same time part of a group.
Mais c’est ici le bât blesse
To try to help the people with the most need and with specific needs we target !
This can be good and bad !
Good and Bad
It can take into account very specific needs which cannot be satisfied easily otherwise
But it can highlight the problem as being uniquely a problem in the individual
And everything can be seen through a prism of the disability Impairment is a poor guide to predicting social participation Often the influence of the environment can be downplayed
Paradox of ‘community’ politics
People with disability should unite and have a common cause.
The feeling of solidarity gives energy , resolve and resources for fighting injustice.
Makes it harder for your claims and grievances to be ignored.
One aim is to seek similar treatment and rights to everyone.
But there is a problem.
If you join together you highlight the fact you are disabled or are women or are gay….
You adopt an identity and strengthen the impression that you are different and not like everyone else…. So in some kind of way this self-defeating.
you make it more difficult to be treated like everyone else. Furthermore often groups adopt an exclusive attitude
Frequently associations claim special privileges for their members
While at the same time they demand that people with disability should be treated the same as everyone.
If we look at sport now and how it is organized …
Take the paralympiques It must be wonderful to play your favorite and best sport; to
compete ; to represent one’s country A great feeling of comraderie And there are some wonderful moments !
http://lebuzz.eurosport.fr/football/video-a-rio-un-joueur-de-cecifoot-elimine-toute-lequipe-adverse-et-marque-un-superbe-but-
31826/?_ga=1.61635883.683948406.1474927112
But it offers a model of disability which is based on functional ability in the sport, but often is related to impairment.
It also offers an extremely individual hero/heroine inspired model of disability
And puts people in narrow categories ( for fairness of competition) which separates people from each other.
A very small minority of disabled people benefit and have the opportunity to participate
It is a very elite model supposedly based around talent.
To become a paralympique champion this demands giving ones life over entirely to the sport and training. What comes after… ?
Surveys suggest since the London Paralympiques attitudes to disabled people have improved by 20%
But on the other hand there are reports…
They suggest that ordinary people with disability are still victims of discrimination and poverty and inequality poor living conditions, lack of income, unemployment, health inequalties …
From a health perspective
Sport is fun ! But playing sport can have benefits but also harms It feels good to dance and to move and to use one’s body Motivating to win It can improve quality of life and prevent disease. But depending on how we practice sport it may not improve
inclusion.
What is inclusion about ?
Inclusion is about opportunity to share with others who are different from ourselves
Its about sharing the same facilities It’s about having access to the same facilities Its about having the opportunity to play outside
one’s group It’s a challenge for people with disability It’s about acceptance and tolerance
In way of conclusion En guise de conclusion
“We have the right to be equal whenever difference diminishes us;
we have the right to be different whenever equality decharacterizes us.”
