Our sincere thanks to Brigitte Fontaine, Patrick Jeffroy, Renan Luce, Henri Bideau et François de Beaulieu for sparing us the time to talk to us about their passion... thereby making it our own.

Brigitte FontaineSinger-Songwriter

It’s not unusual to come across Brigitte Fontaine in Morlaix, as this is where she was born. We met up with her one Saturday at the Brasserie de l’Europe, where she’s something of a regular.‘I love Morlaix more and more as time goes on. I spent the best years of my life here. I was born in the rue du Mur and grew up at the Gambetta School, where both my parents were teachers. There, I had gardens, a vegetable plot and orchards that gave me wonderful memories (her song, ‘Les Vergers’ alludes to the orchards of her childhood). The Italian-style Theatre is magnificent, I used to go there a lot when I was younger and would wait rather impatiently when the company Centre Dramatique de l’Ouest was due to play. I’ll certainly come back to live here again one day, when I’ve finished all the albums and the tours…’ Port and Manufacture des Tabacs

The Morlaix house known as the Maison

à Pondalez is a timbered house dating

from the first quarter of the 16th century.

The Maison à Pondalez is a particular

architectural design with a staggered

frontage and concealed inner courtyard

which is very rare, hence its status

as an Historic Monument. Restored

from 1993-1997, it has one of the two

best preserved staircases of its kind in

Morlaix so this, along with the house

known as Maison de la Duchess Anne

on rue du Mur, stands as exceptional

witnesses of Morlaix history and

architecture.

Patrick JeffroyWinner of two Michelin stars, chef Patrick

Jeffroy owns and runs the four-star Hotel

and its acclaimed restaurant in Carantec.

‘As a well-travelled chef, I’ll hardly set down my suitcase but I need to see her, to hear her, to be back out there in my Morlaix Bay. It can be the Trégor area at Guerzit beach with its name that sounds as heavy as granite, or here in Carantec watching the ballet of the lighthouses on the islands of Louët, Batz, and Lande… How many of us have imagined the Count of Monte Cristo escaping from the Château du Taureau? From the Hôtel de Carantec, I can contemplate the little islands, whose names I’ve given to our hotel bedrooms: Sterec, Sable, Sant Karanteg, Les Roches Jaunes, Sieck… then, at really low tides, the whole area transforms into a water garden of zen-like tranquillity. Nowadays, the oyster beds out there remind me of vineyards.’

ASSOCIATION REDER MORThe Reder Mor is a U-shaped Sloop from Ros-

coff and belongs to the flotilla of boats typical

of Morlaix Bay. The association is now led by a

team of young volunteers; through their moti-

vation and direct action, they are determined to

make Reder Mor a major part of the maritime

heritage of Morlaix Bay. Every season, the

Reder Mor attends various boat festivals. She

takes part in regattas and proudly represents

her region. During the summer, this lovely old

Sloop also welcomes the public on board so

they can enjoy an original trip around one of

the world’s most beautiful bays, carried along

Renan Lucesinger-songwriter

Launched to the public in 2006 through his album ‘Repenti’, Renan Luce is a local boy, originally from the Morlaix area.‘I grew up in the country near a farm, surrounded by fields.’ Still fond of this bucolic poetry, it’s no surprise that he chose Saint-Jean-du-Doigt as a place recharge his batteries. ‘I need a place to retreat to and be in my own little bubble to write.’ This is why he set up a home studio, where his new album ‘D’une tonne à un tout petit poids’ was created. This natural landscape is important to Renan Luce, but he also loves the sea. ‘My favourite spot is the Plage du Moulin in Trobodec. I love walking there, it’s an amazing spot; a creek with fine sand, isolated, framed by fern-covered cliffs.’

The Château du Taureaurather disturbing

silhouette dominates Mor-

laix Bay: this is the Château du

Taureau… and the great news

is – you can visit it!

From April onwards, from

Carantec or Plougasnou to ex-

plore this symbolic monument,

even though its first purpose

was to discourage all visitors.

Morlaix was a prosperous place

thanks to its linen trade, but

it was attacked in 1522 by the

English, at which point it be-

came clear that Morlaix was in

need of some military defence

system at the entrance to the

Bay. This is how the Château

began: a great fortified struc-

ture managed and financed by

the people of Morlaix.

The Captain of this stone ship,

surrounded by a solid crew, has

worked all winter to concoct a

series of visits, each as daring

and original as the last: traditio-

nal visits, discovery workshops

about the nearby birds, themed

visits, theatrical visits and

even night-time visits – there’s

certainly something to suit

everyone!

Open from April to September.

Departures from Carantec and

Plougasnou.

Booking essential,

Prices: Adults 14€,

children 4 - 12 years: 7€

(Free for those under 4 years

group visits.

Guerlesquin

Out of the way, and utterly out of the ordinary: that’s

”Guerlesquin, labelled as ‘Small Town of Great Character’

seems to grow out of the granite, its coloured façades lighting up the sides of the central town square. The trail allowing visitors to explore the many churchyards of special architectural interest (circuit des enclos paroissiaux) lead right to Guerlesquin and right up to the monumental stone cross sculpture at Plougonven. Several other treasures can be found in the countryside, both natural and man-made: chapels, fountains, stone crosses, standing stones, and a nature reserve. The converted railway track of the ‘Voie Verte’ is a flat, calm trail ideal for travelling here – so start planning your journey!

Henri BideauTour Guide

Guerlesquin knows exactly how to play on your senses, which is key to your first impressions and how you interpret any place you’re visiting for the first time. Your eye judges the scale of the town square dating from the Middle Ages, a place where the of houses are interspersed with a church, market halls and a prison in a rare example of unity in Brittany. Your hand strokes the cut stone, bearing traces of chisel marks in this local granite. In the café, shake hands with one of the locals, always ready to share their town. On the wind from the East comes the wealth of the countryside, the scent of farming and agriculture tickling the nostrils; on the wind from the West, you have the fogs of the Arrée Mountains; from the North, the fresh sea air sweeps into the town. At the market, Breton words mix with French among the plodding cattle. You’ll barely have left Guerlesquin before you feel the aftertaste, the desire to come back again.

TO SHARE AND TO

THE ARRÉE MOUNTAINS, AND CHURCHYARDS OF SPECIAL INTEREST

Head south on the road to the mountains. Once you reach Roc’h Trevezel (384 metres high), a superb view opens up before you: on a clear day, you might be able to spot Morlaix Bay... the peaks, the marshland, the peat bogs... no other landscape compares. And its heritage is not to be overlooked: between the mountain peaks, the parish churchyards stake their silhouetted claim on the skyline, testaments of the religious fervour of times gone by and filled with a rich history waiting to be discovered.

François de BeaulieuAuthor of Dictionary of Nature in Brittany (published by Skol Vreizh, available in French)

‘The civilisation of mankind began and flourished in direct contact with animals, plants and the countryside. Our languages and our beliefs still reflect this long association although few landscapes still bear the traces of it.‘Even though we’re now living in the third millennium, we still need the jays in the oak trees, the willows gnawed by beavers, the heathers that buzz with activity, the curlews, the lichen on the rocks, the smell of gorse bushes before the storm, the infinite delicacy of the squirrels. We still need to keep open a huge window on these origins. We need the Arrée Mountains, to share and to dream.’

In Plougonven (10th-12th July) and Saint-Thégonnec (24th-26th July), we’ll be putting a colourful spotlight on our unique and magical ‘Enclos Paroissiaux’, fascinating parish churchyards with flamboyant architecture.

7

Our religious monuments are unlike any others in the world. Each parish church consisted of the church itself, a stone cross monument, an ossuary (bone house), a graveyard and a triumphal entrance. The outer wall then marked the boundary and protected the holy ground. These major works were undertaken in a spirit of religious fervour and required serious financing. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Brittany’s linen and cloth industry made it a prosperous place to be.

Once upon a time, there was a marvellous kingdom with wonderful activities for children to try during the holidays.

There was never any time to get bored, and the days were never quite long enough to try everything on offer!

Little ones could go to the beach clubs, older children enjoyed first outing in a catamaran or kayak with Dad, while Mum and baby could enjoy a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. The next day, the whole family might tackle the Château du Taureau: a castle you could actually go inside and visit. Before the holidays were over a trip to Écopark adventures would be on the cards, to go swinging through the tree-tops, Tarzan-style!

Be it in the trees, on the seaside or exploring island fortresses, the only difficulty in this magical land was choosing what to do next!

Celtic Drinking Flutes

Morlaix man Ludovic Le Gall had the bright idea of combining his passion for wine with his professional skills as a deep-sea diver, immersing bottles of wine deep underwater not far from the famous Château du Taureau. The sea creates perfect conditions that cannot be matched by underground cellars. The bottles are quickly covered in barnacles, giving each one the look of a thousand-year-old treasure. It’s an excellent souvenir to tuck into your suitcase – return home with a vintage that is literally branded by Morlaix Bay itself! On sale in Carantec:
