Sorokousty Memorial Services In just a few short weeks, the holy season of the Great Fast (Lent) will once again be upon us. As in the past, we will honor the memory of our beloved deceased with Sorokousty Memorial Services at 9 a.m. on all Saturdays of Lent beginning Feb. 21. This is the service where Fr. Ivan reads aloud in church the names of the deceased. If you would like your deceased family members commemorated during these services, please submit your envelope with the names clearly listed, by Feb. 15. After that date, names of your loved ones can still be submitted and will be commemorated, but not listed in the bulletin. Please use your Sorokousty envelope if you are a parishioner, if you are not, then write the names on a piece of paper and put it into a white envelope and place it in the collection basket. Put your name or your family name on the envelope. Take the time to remember your deceased family members. They hope for our prayers; and in turn they pray for us. This year, the Day will be offered on a regional basis at two separate locations and will begin with Divine Liturgy at 11:00 a.m. Lunch, a formal program and a closing ritual will follow; and the Day will conclude at 4:00 p.m. The Holy Mystery of Reconciliation (Holy Confession) will be available shortly before Divine Liturgy and throughout the Day. The 2015 Women’s Day of Prayer has been developed by the members of the Philadelphia Archeparchy’s Committee for the Enrichment of Women whose Mission is to offer women of all ages an occasion to grow spiritually and deepen their faith; to expand their social consciousness and their understanding of the social issues and problems facing today’s women and families; and to nurture their personal development through various opportunities for enrichment. A meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb 3, 2015 at

8:00 PM in the church hall.

Members are reminded that the February meeting

will NOT be held on the second Tuesday evening, but

rather on Sunday, February 8 after the 11:30 Divine

Liturgy. A regular business meeting will be conducted

Faith and the Family

The Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, in

partnership with the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the

Great, the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, and the

Missionary Sisters of the Mother of God, will sponsor Faith

and the Family. This year, the Day will be offered on a

regional basis at two separate locations and will begin with

Divine Liturgy at 11:00 a.m. Lunch, a formal program and a

closing ritual will follow; and the Day will conclude at 4:00

p.m. The Holy Mystery of Reconciliation (Holy Confession)

will be available shortly before Divine Liturgy and throughout

Що робити, коли сняться померлі родичі? Що

це означає? Хоча Церква дуже обережно ставиться до снів, та не

займається їх тлумаченням, коли сняться померлі, то це чи не єдиний випадок, коли Церква знає точну відповідь на питання "Що робити?". Треба посилити молитву за упокій души свого родича або близького, який наснився. Треба відвідати церкву і звернутися до священика з проханням відправити Літургію за спочилим. При цьому не треба хвилюватися, або

лякатися. Мерці не можуть заподіяти вам ніякої шкоди.

Отче тут в Америці і в Україні, ви напевно,

бачили: уздовж доріг, на місцях аварій, часто

ставлять пам’ятники, іноді навіть з огорожами. Наскільки це відповідає християнській традиції?

Традиція ставити хрести поза кладовищем, встановлювати поклінний хрест на особливо відзначених місцях, наприклад роздоріжжях доріг або

при в’їзді в якесь селище, була на Русі споконвіку.

Робилося це для того, щоб людина, побачивши поклінний хрест, задумалася і помолилася. Бувало, на місці трагедії ставили храми. Церква у всі часи намагалася освячувати такі місця, що б люди молилися тут з особливим почуттям, згадуючи Господа і поминаючи покійних – своїх загиблих родичів.

Мабуть, установка хрестів на місці загибелі в ДТП має той же зміст: щоб, проїжджаючи місце трагедії, людина помолилася про покійних, а заодно і просто знизила швидкість. Це може вберегти від чергової трагедії. Але, звичайно, зловживати такими речами і робити дублі кладовищ уздовж доріг не варто, тому що могильний хрест личить встановлювати на місці поховання, ніж

на місці загибелі. А ось що абсолютно недоречно – це коли на стовпи кріплять керма, вінки і всілякі сторонні речі, які не відносяться до молитви.

Як повинен виглядати пам’ятник на цвинтарі ,

щоб не суперечити християнським традиціям? Правильний пам’ятник завжди повинен увінчуватися хрестом. Тобто хрест не повинен бути збоку, чи, чого гіршого, взагалі не бути зображеним, а повинен зверху посередині увінчувати пам’ятник християнина. Звідси і

видно, що у цій могилі поховане тіло не атеїста чи мусульманина, а правовірного воїна Христового. Хрест може бути дерев’яний або кам’яний. Хрест нагадує про той хрест, який ніс покійний протягом земного життя. Добре, якщо на ньому буде написана епітафія з глибоким духовним змістом. Але який би пам’ятник не був, треба не забувати, що душам покійних потрібні не

надгробки і епітафії, а наші молитви. Всі ми тут тимчасово. І могильні хрести, і кладовища не вічні. І пам’ятник має сенс тільки на той час, поки люди моляться за душу того, чий прах лежить під ним. Тому місце поховання має бути місцем, де було б зручно молитися і де б все сприяло зверненню до Бога …

Чи існують якісь правила по облаштуванню

могил? Господа не вразиш багатим убранням могил, але його

можна вразити жертовністю та любов’ю до нужденних людей і до Церкви Божої. Це повинні усвідомити ті люди, які замість того, щоб допомогти покійному справами милосердя, задовольняють власне марнославство, живлять свої пристрасті, виправдовуючись тим, що вони таким чином проявляють любов до покійного. Насправді не

покійного вони люблять, а себе! Ті, хто влаштовують могили так, щоб все було солідно, дорого і престижно, лише шкодять душі померлого і себе вганяють в гріх. Сумно, коли останній притулок близького стає місцем самоствердження і гордині його рідних.

Є категорія людей, які заздалегідь піклуються

про комфортне місце на цвинтарі – ближче до

виходу або до церкви, на центральній алеї, поруч з відомими людьми. Яке відношення має бути до вибору місця на цвинтарі?

– Якщо зрозуміти, що могила – це не остання квартира, де живе померлий, а місце воскресіння, то все встає на свої місця. Адже Бог воскресить з будь-якого місця. Причому зручність, престижність, багаті прикраси могил не матимуть для Страшного Суду ніякого значення. Вся ця помпезність потрібна

СОРОКОУСТИ ( Поминання Померлих)

Виявом нашої любові до тих, що відійшли до вічності, є

наші молитви в роковини їхньої смерті чи похорону. Це похвальний християнський звичай у роковини давати на

відправу святої Літургії і Парастасу. Так ми засвідчуємо нашу любов до дорогих нам померлих і нашу вдячність їм. Однак, хоч

Церква у своїх щоденних молитвах і богослужіннях пам'ятає про душі померлих, все-таки вона, як добра мати, у часі Великого

Посту призначає ще окремі дні для поминання й молитви за померлих. Ці дні називаємо задушними і молимосЬ Сорокоусти.

Сорокоусти – це Служба Божа в часі Великого посту,

підчас якої читають поминальні молитви за всіх померлих. Якщо ви є парафіянами нашого храму то

між вашими річними конвертами, є сірий конверт на якому написано – “Sorokousty”. Візьміть цей конверт,

і на ньому напишіть імена померлих, дайте свою датку, і киньте конверт у кошик підчас Літургiї. Якщо

ж ви не маєте конвертів, то візьміть пустий конверт зі столика при вході до церкви, напишіть на ньому або

на листку паперу імена померлих рідних і дайте конверт о. Івану або також киньте конверт у кошик

підчас збірки. Якщо ви подасте імена ваших рідних

померлих до 15 Лютого, то список із іменами померлих буде опубліковано в церковному віснику. Після цієї

дати, ви можете також подавати імена померлих рідних і вони будуть згадуватися на Літургії на протязі цілого Посту, але не

будуть опубліковані в церковному віснику. Отець Іван служитиме Сорокоусти в Заупокійні суботи, після св. Літургії о

год. 9:00 рано, починаючи від Суботи, 15 Лютого. Пам'ятайте, що молитися за померлих родичів, близьких

Стрітенська Свічка.

Один священик на саме свято Стрітення Господа Нашого Ісуса Христа перед самим освяченням свічок сказав дуже строго, але водночас благально: “Не вірте байкам про стрітенську свічку. Бо ходять слухи, що свічка має чудодійну силу. І якщо з нею зробити те і те, то буде те і те. Це все видумка, байки. Це я вам говорю, священик, що освячує ці свічки. Свічка ніякої сили не має!” Тут всі затихли, а духовний пастир продовжив: Освячуємо свічки у церкві нашою молитвою і в молитвах на освячення свічок прохаємо про те, “щоб, як запалені свічки своїм світлом розганяли нічний морок, так і наші душі, просвічені Духом Святим, уникали гріховної тьми (сліпоти духовної).” Стрітенська свічка сильна тим, що є символом просвіченості нашого серця самим же Духом Святим. Символ має зближувати до Бога, а не віддалювати. Якщо цього немає й свічка сприймається просто як обряд або традиція і її ставлять на видному місці і не запалюють для молитви, або й кладуть десь у скриню, то вона втрачає свій зміст і перетворюється на магізм. Магізм віддаляє від Бога і цілої духовності. Дорогі в Христі, зростаймо у духовній зрілості і зрозуміймо, що не сама свічка має силу, а молитва біля цієї свічки стає сильнішою, бо свічка була освячена спільною молитвою у Божому храмі. Бог благословить кожну молитву, а на молитву перед Стрітенською свічкою звертає більшу увагу. Світло свічки є символом самого Христа, який сказав: «Я є Світло світу». Тому й ми в молитві на освячення свічок звертаємося до Господа: «Господи, Ісусе Христе, Світло правдиве, що освітлює кожну людину, яка приходить на цей світ ! Пошли своє благословення на свічки оці й освяти їх світлом благодаті своєї». Сам же Бог сказав, що молитва багатьох має велику силу. Тому, коли хтось молиться при Стрітенській свічці, то молиться із цілою церквою, яка і освячувала її та згодилась в тому, щоб молитва всіх нас була вислухана.

Father, does God really help us? Because why did He let

so many people die in the holocaust?

There are shelves and shelves of books about what we call ‘the problem of pain’ and ‘the problem of death.’ Many authors have

addressed these topics in books, articles in journals and magazines, secular and theological, philosophical and social. God is, by His very nature, a loving and charitable God. He hears and answers our prayers. He helps us, consoles us, comforts us and blesses us at every turn. He doesn’t withhold blessings and goodness from any-one. But there are men who, in spite of God’s goodness and love, repay their neighbors with hatred and violence. People continue to

hurt and be hurt, to ail and to die. And God watches our lives and our deaths, accidents and epidemics and all the joys and tragedies in our lives. God is love, and we are made in His image. God wants us to love Him, but he allows us the choice of whether we love Him or not. If we choose to love God and return His love for us, then we

must realize that we must also love our neighbor – who is also made in God’s image. So we cannot harm anyone, or kill them, as was done in the holocaust and in wars and riots and troubles. We

therefore should not blame God for not preventing evil; every per-son has the power to prevent evil by turning freely to God and all our neighbors with love. God doesn’t do evil, cannot do evil, because He is purely

good. By His nature, He can’t do evil. When God created us, He made us in His image, and He allows men to choose do as they will, good or bad. Eventually when the evil that those men do is so poisonous and great, someone or some group will stand up to oppose them and sweep them out of power. Sometimes this cleansing is quick and sometimes it takes a long time. God gives man free will and sometimes the man in ques-

tion is not a good man at all. God doesn’t interfere with man’s free will because He wants the evil men in the world to have a chance to turn away from wickedness. God gave man free will and doesn’t take back His promises even when man chooses to do evil. God does not rejoice when men decide to do evil or to live lives of evil. He doesn’t interfere with men who choose to do iniqui-

ty. But He continues to show mercy on everyone, to bless everyone

who prays and to guide everyone to wisdom who asks it of Him.

If the Jews were God’s chosen people, then why didn’t

they all become Christian when Jesus came? God chose them, but His gift of free will means that the Jews didn’t have to choose Him. Further, let’s answer your question with a

question: If we take the name of Christ and call ourselves Christian, then why don’t we all live saintly and genuinely Christian lives? In the Old Testament, God said that by agreeing to keep the Law of the Old Testament, the Jews would be God’s Chosen People. But the entire history of those chosen people of God is a record of infidelities and sins. Again and again, God sends prophets to correct the behavior of the people, but only a ‘faithful remnant’ manage to

be faithful to God and to save themselves. Noah was told to build an ark to repopulate the earth because of the flood God sent to clean it. Joseph was sent to Egypt so that a remnant of the people could be saved. Moses led the chosen people from slavery to Pharaoh and bondage to sin to the land God promised them. At the time of the

exile of the Jews into Babylon, one of the sons of the Kings of Judah was called ‘Shear Jashub,’ which translates as ‘a remnant shall re-

turn.’ In the New Testament, Jesus, the Son of God taught us to keep a new commandment, that we love one another, and love God with all our heart and all our soul and all our mind and all our strength. The Holy Spirit comes into the Church to continue to be with us and guide us and help us keep the New Covenant. But our

personal history remains a record of infidelities and sins. We have been chosen as His people too, baptized and anointed, yet we choose our own selfish ways.

What’s the difference between the Dormition of the Moth-

er of God and Assumption of the Mother of God? Dormition means ‘falling asleep’. Dormition refers to the Christian

teaching about the death of the Mother of God, about which we say, she surrendered her soul into the arms of her Son, when she ‘fell

asleep’. On the third day after her death, in the teaching of the Byz-antine Catholic Church, the apostle Thomas witnessed the resurrec-tion of the Virgin and her assumption (taking up) into heaven, so that her bodily remains were not found in her tomb when it was opened.

Assumption, on the other hand, goes further, and says that she did

not die but her body was taken up into heaven by Jesus. In

1950, the Pope of Rome proclaimed this to be a doctrine, some-

thing all Roman Catholics must believe in order to be saved.

Sunday of the Prodigal Son. The parable of the Prodigal Son speaks of

many things including the terrible corrupting effects of sin, the unconditional love of God and the hard work and joy of REPENTANCE. Can repentance be joy-ful?

Repentance is much more than making a list and admitting our sins. It implies the willingness to make a radical transformation. Metanoia-μετάνοια, the Greek word for repentance, literally means to turn around, to change one’s mind or direction. Re-pentance cannot be merely a recognizing sin in our lives. We must also change the way we think about ourselves, about God, about life itself.

The Prodigal Son came to believe he was in-vincible. Notice, he did not change his mind on his own. Running out of money and into debt changed it for him, but a real transformation began in him when he realized the way to end his suffering: to return home. Facing the consequences at home, he rea-soned, would be far better than continuing life in a pigpen. He changed his mind. He accepted that he was not invincible. I’ll bet at some point he attempt-ed to blame his father for his ill fortune while he ate those pods. Do we not usually look for someone else to blame when things don’t go right? Eventually he came to know the truth. He came to understand that no one else was to blame. His understanding of him-self changed at that moment. He came face to face with reality, with his stupid decision and irresponsible behavior. He stood and walked away not only from a pigpen, but from a lie.

If we want to make progress during this up-coming Great Fast-Lent we too must turn away from the lies around which we have built our lives. That is why the Church asks us to begin the Lenten journey by first seeking one another’s forgiveness and giving it in the great ritual of Forgiveness Vespers. We must take responsibility for our actions and forgive any who have wronged us. Then we are instructed through one of the Church’s holy prayers “to still all earthly and ma-terial thoughts.”

On this Sunday, together with the Prodigal Son let us also embrace the idea of repentance as em-bracing a new way of seeing and living life. Amen.

Presentation of Jesus at the Temple.

In our Eastern tradition, this feast is often called The Meeting of Our Lord and God and Savior, Jesus Christ, because the hymns emphasize the incar-nate God, the Lord Jesus Christ, meeting with his people, Israel, in the persons of the Prophet Simeon and the Prophetess Anna. The Jewish people were waiting for the Mes-siah to come and deliver Israel from their conquerors. From that time on, Simeon spent his time praying for the Messiah to come. He spent many years in prayer in the temple, because God promised Simeon that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. When Simeon saw Jesus, he took the baby in his arms and blessed the Lord and said:

"Lord, now let Your servant go in peace according to Your promise, because my eyes have seen Your salvation which you have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring

revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory to your people Israel." After Jesus was presented in the Temple, the family returned to Galilee to the town of Nazareth. The Bible tells us that Jesus grew and became strong, and was filled with wisdom.

Traditionally, after the Liturgy priest blesses candles that are distribut-ed to the faithful for use in the home. These candles are lit during (thunder) storms and placed in windows to ward off storms.
