Michael Jackson – Who is this pop star?
Michael Jackson (nicknamed ‚Jacko‘) was born on 29 August 1958 in Gary, Indiana. He died on 25 June 2009 in Los Angeles. Jackson was an American pop singer, entertainer, composer and dancer. His father was a crane opera-tor, and his mother a sales assistant. Michael had nine siblings. The children received musical instruction from their parents, who were themselves musi-cians, and were encouraged by them; this was especially true of Michael. In 1963, their father formed the band The Jackson Five for five of his sons; the band achieved global success from 1969 and featured Michael as the lead singer until well into the 1980s. The five singers pursued solo careers in paral-lel. In 1982, Michael Jackson released the world‘s best-selling album till date Thriller. Further albums followed: Ben, Off the Wall, Bad, Dangerous, History and
Invincible. Michael Jackson sold more than 750 million records worldwide. The Guinness Book of Records declares him the „most successful entertainer of all time“. Because of his successes, he is also called the ‚King of Pop‘. Jackson‘s trademarks were the so-called ‚moonwalk’, a mimed dance, the characteristic crotch grab and, as far as his outfit was concerned, a black hat, white socks and white gloves – and often fantasy uniforms, too. Michael Jackson had his face surgically enhanced and drastically changed several times, a fact that did not escape public criticism. He was also negatively portrayed in the media in 1993 and 2005, when he was accused of child abuse, but he was absolved of charges in both instances. As he got older, he suffered from insomnia, was dependent on medication and died of an overdose of sleeping pills. Michael Jackson’s social commitment was legendary. Altogether, he donated over 300 million US dollars to various charities.

Michael Jackson – We Are the World
On 28 January 1985, the song We Are the World, composed by Michael Jack-son and Lionel Richie in just two and a half hours, was recorded. It was dedi-cated to the starving people of Africa and was produced as part of the ‚USA for Africa‘ music project. Several pop stars who enjoyed global fame at that time each sang a short snippet of the song in the following sequence: Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Mi-chael Jackson, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Cindy Lauper, Bob Dylan and Ray Charles. The song ended up being a mega-hit the world over. The 7.3 mil-lion singles sold made We Are the World the most successful benefit song till date. The piece brought in 88 million dollars for the starving peoples of Africa. On 1 February 2010, more than six months after Jackson‘s death, 85 interna-
tional pop stars came together to work on the charity project ‚Artists for Haiti‘ to re-record the 25-year-old song, this time to rescue the survivors of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Among the stars were: Justin Bieber, Pink, Céline Dion, Michael’s sister Janet Jackson, Enrique Iglesias and Michael Bublé. Michael Jack-son‘s part in the original 1985 version was segued into the new recording. The recording was directed by the same person and took place in the same recording studio as in 1985. The new recording, however, could not repeat the popular success of the original, possibly also because some of the most important pop stars of the time, like Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, did not participate. For them, after the death of Michael Jackson, the original was sacrosanct.
State some occasions that would be well served by the song We Are the World, and justify your opinion.
