Teaching of Taqwa through fasting

Allah has mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 183:

قون یام كما كتب على الذین من قبلكم لعلكم تت ھا الذین آمنوا كتب علیكم الص یا أی“O you who believe, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those

before you so that you may become righteous”

In this verse, Allah clearly mentioned that the purpose of fasting is to make us become Muttaqun (righteous). But this verse does not mean that it is guaranteed that as a result of fasting you will become a righteous person. Instead, this verse gives us optimism and hope that with fasting, we can attain its purpose,, which is to become a righteous person.

Set our intention firmly that we will become a better Muslim with this Ramadan. You can set your niyyah (intention) to fast for the whole Ramadan! But it is also recommended to set your intention every night. So, don’t forget to set your niyyah (intention) to fast!

Ramadan as a month of training

Narrated by Abu Huraira R.A.:

یاطین م، وسلسلت الش ماء، وغلقت أبواب جھن إذا دخل شھر رمضان فتحت أبواب السAllah's Messenger (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, "When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of

the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained."(Sahih al-Bukhari, 1899)

Ramadan is a month given by Allah to train ourselves to become good and faithful people and protect ourselves from committing sins. In this month, all the devils are chained. So, we cannot miss this chance that Allah has provided us to prepare ourselves for the upcoming challenges in future months.

List down all bad habits or behaviours that we struggle with in other months and try to eliminate all of them or as many as we can to see how much we improved after Ramadan.

The revelation of Al-Qur’an

Allah has mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 185:

ن الھدى والفرقان نات م شھر رمضان الذي أنزل فیھ القرآن ھدى للناس وبی“The month of Ramadan (is that) in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance

for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.”

Ramadan is such a blessed month that in this month, Allah has revealed Al-Qur’an, the ultimate guidance for us. It was revealed all at once to Jibril A.S. in the night of Al-Qadr before it was revealed sparingly to our prophet Muhammad (Pbuh).

Be motivated and set your niyyah (intention) to finish the whole Al-Qur’an in Ramadan this year!

Expiations of sins between Ramadan to Ramadan

Abu Huraira reported:لوات الخمس والجمعة إلى الجمعة ورمضان إلى رمضان مكفرات ما بینھن إذا اجتنب الكبائر الص

Verily the Messenger of Allah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said: “The five (daily) prayers and from one Friday prayer to the (next) Friday prayer, and from Ramadan to Ramadan are expiations for the (sins) committed in between (their intervals) provided one shuns the major sins”.

(Sahih Muslim, Book 2, Hadith 19)

Consistency in good deeds is so important that it becomes a reason for Allah to atone our sins from one Jum’ah prayer to another and from Ramadan to Ramadan as long as we preserve ourselves from doing major sins.

Make sure to always pray on time. To serve our Lord is more important than to serve anyone or anything worldly (Dunya).

Ramadan is the month where the merit of our deeds is multiplied in a manifold manner. We must strive to benefit from this special month as much as we can.

leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)" (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1903)

Allah will not accept the fasting of someone who does not preserve his tongue and his limbs from doing bad actions. What he will get from his fasting is no more than merely hunger and thirst.

Reduce conversations that are not important or not necessary and refrain from doing bad deeds by making ourselves busy in doing good deeds.

which grows seven ears; in each ear is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies (His rewards) for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

Whoever spends their money in the way of Allah, Allah guarantees to multiply their rewards up to 700 times! It is such a waste if we refuse to accept these rewards.

Be wise. Don’t follow what the Devil keeps telling you. Spending some of your wealth would not make you poor. Instead, it makes you richer in Allah’s Sight.

give them to the poor, it is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds [thereby]. And Allah, with what you do, is [fully] Acquainted.

We can disclose our charities not to show-off (riya’) to other people but to encourage them to give charity as well. But, if you conceal it, that will be much better for you.

(Sahih Muslim, 1152)

Allah loves people who fast so much that he prepared a premium entrance to Paradise called the gate of Ar-Rayyan that no one else can enter except the ones who observed fasting.

Never sigh about fasting during Ramadan or even think about leaving a day of fasting in Ramadan except with an excuse acceptable by Shariah. Indeed, the Paradise is waiting for people who persevere in fasting.

behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, 'I am fasting." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, 1894)

Fasting is a means to help us abstain from committing sins. When someone begins an argument, always remind yourself that you are fasting and inform the person who tries to argue with you.

Ignore the screaming, shouting and insults of the ignorant. If you feel you want to argue, fight or say something bad, say aloud twice, “I am fasting”. None of us want only hunger and thirst from the fasting and a loss of all its blessings.

United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that 1.3 billion tonnes of food is lost or wasted globally every year. We absolutely should not waste our food in Ramadan, as wasting food is an act of ungratefulness to Allah. This verse teaches us to eat and drink moderately so we don’t waste our food.

Allah's Messenger (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, "The prayer in congregation is twenty seven times superior to the prayer offered by a person alone."

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, 645)

The body have a right over its owner

Don’t exaggeratedly do ‘Ibadah to the extent that you neglect or harm your own body. Indeed, your body has a right over you.

Take care of your body. Pamper yourself after a long day of fasting with a relaxing bath or a cup of tea while listening to the recitation of the Qur’an from your favorite reciter.

`Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As narrated as he fast all day and pray all night: قال " فال تفعل، صم وأفطر، وقم ونم، فإن لجسدك علیك حقا…"

Allah's Messenger (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, "Do not do that! Observe the fast sometimes and also leave them (the fast) at other times; stand up for the prayer at night and

also sleep at night. Your body has a right over you…” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, 5199)

Forgive others

When we think of forgiveness we mostly think of Allah’s forgiveness and we forget how important it is for us also to forgive. We need to remember both, otherwise how can we expect Allah SWT to forgive us, while we are not willing to forgive others?

Fight your ego and really try to forgive with your heart and not only with your lips. Think about Allah, your Most Beloved, and think about your ego. Whis is most important? The choice is yours.

Jarir bin ‘Abdullah narrated: من ال یرحم الناس ال یرحم هللا

Allah's Messenger (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said, "Allah will not be merciful to those who are not merciful to mankind."

Obligation of Zakat Al-Fitr

Zakat Al-Fitr is obligated to every Muslim without any exception. The most recommended time to pay this Zakat is after Fajr on ‘Eid day until ‘Eid prayer but if we afraid of missing that time, we can also pay it the day before ‘Eid’s or in the last days of Ramadan. If we pay after ‘Eid, it will be considered as normal Sadaqah and not Zakat Al-Fitr.

Everything has become so easy now. You can pay your zakat online!

and old, among the Muslims." (Sunan an-Nasa'i, 2504)

Fasting 6 days in Shawwal

Fasting six days in Shawwal carries a reward equal to fasting everyday for the whole year.

Make sure to include 6 days of fasting in Shawwal in your to-do list!

Abu Ayub narrated:ھر ال فذلك صیام الد من صام رمضان ثم أتبعھ ستا من شو

The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan, then follows it with six from Shawwal, then that is (equal in reward) to fasting everyday."
