According to an ancient legend, whenGod distributed benefits, Dalmatians got

grapevine... because, at a place wheresun burns the rocks, where soil is thirsty,

where rocky ground prevails, hardly any

crop may survive. That is exactly Dalma-

tia and that is where grapevine found itshomeland.

For as early as the 4th century BC, the

Ancient Greeks brought the grape vine

to this sunny island and planted it in thefertile plain of the ancient town Pharos.Throughout the centuries of rich and tur-

bulent history, people on Hvar cultivated

their vineyards with great skill and care, blessed with the lushness of Mediterra-

nean. Grapes and wine gave them safety, food and medicine. They grew some of

the finest varieties in this area, but thechallenge still remains: how to turn this

richness and harmony into great wines.Tour starts at 6pm. After 30 min drive you

arrive to Jelsa, small town on the northcoast of the island. It used to be one of

the most significant maritime, shipbuild-ing and trade centres of the Adriatic, starting point for ocean-going sailing

vessels carrying best wines of Hvar, oliveoil and salted fish to far destinations all

    over the world.

are covered with thick pine woods pro-viding refreshing shade even during

the hottest summer days. Besides thewell-known

A short drive along a dirt road leads

to Malo Grablje, a small village

    abandoned decades ago. Upon arri-

val there will be a short walk

    through that picturesque village

    founded in the 16thcentury.

After Malo Grablje you proceed to

Velo Grablje and the next stop is

Vidikovac with such a perfect view

of the deepest bay on the island,

there the guide will tell you informa-

tion about the area, about the oldesttown in Croatia founded by ancient

    Greeks and more

After the short stop you drive to the

highest peak of the island, Saint

Nicholas (626 m). From the highest

peak of the island there is a 360 de-

gree unobstructed view of the island

and across to islands of Bra, Korula

and Vis. Below the high point of St.

Nicholas on a sloping sunny hillside

lies Sveta Nedija, a village sur-

rounded with steep vineyards whichare very difficult to tend. It is famous

far and wide for the high quality red

wine it produces from the plavac

    grape.

Driving down the hill you will be

surprised by the variety of the sun-

soaked island paradise of Hvar, ac-

    cented with vineyard-covered hills,

olive groves and undulating fields of

    rosemary and lavender.

You will have lunch at a tavern in the

    abandoned medieval village of

Humac. The tavern with its interior in

    local style, organic vegetables pro-

    duction and food preparation sends

you back to lives of people from Hvar

    from centuries ago. Preparation of

food in the tavern is traditional. The

most interesting is under the bellshaped lid (peka) which is coveredwith live coal.

For lunch you can choose: octopus,

lamb, veal or chicken with potatoes as

    a side dish.

After lunch you continue along the

north coast to Vrboska where you

stop at Soline beach for a relax and a

    swim.
