After having realized his major achievement, the Tour Supercrans (1963-1968), the architect Jean-Marie Ellenberger (1913-1988), designed a large cha-let for his friend, the ski instructor Bouby Rombaldi (1925-2016). Bouby would welcome his clients there, among them Gilbert Bécaud, Charles Aznavour, Gina Lollobrigida and the incomparable Jacqueline Kennedy. The book Signé Bouby (2015) tells the story of this ex-traordinary adventure.Jean-Marie Ellenberger and his colleagues Gilbert Strobino and Maurice Peytrinet designed a very large chalet that encapsulated all the architectural research that Ellenberger had undertaken over a period of about thirty years. An architecture in the shape of a T that he developed in three stories, somewhat like the Vipasca Chalet (1968, see Life no. 61), but even more luxurious. Next to the monumental entrance, a wooden sculpted door and a garage to the south, surrounded by a dry stonewall, gave access to the house. There were nu-merous spaces around the house and in the interior. No cost-saving measures dictated the conception of this large chalet, whose one-sided sloping roof follows in the line with the research that the architect had begun at La

Syrinx from 1950 (Life no 65). A big bay win-dow, composed of red, yellow and orange coloured squares, welcomes the visitor on arrival; a wide corridor then leads towards an immense living room, where six steps separate the half-levels of the living room. A stained glass work by Albert Chavaz de-picting a musician playing the trumpet also reveals the friendship between the owner and the artist. This area demarcates the living room, which opens onto a mezzanine that enables an overlook of the house, but which also acts as a small study. The five bedrooms to the south are linked by a long corridor. Four bedrooms were made for Bouby Rombaldi’s four children. It was from them that the chalet took its name – Le Quatuor – as the children all played mu-sical instruments. Each room had its own colour and the ceiling heights varied, which lent dynamics to the spaces and to the var-ious volumes.

In front of the house, a large garden allows for relaxation facing a view of the moun-tains and Lake Moubra . The south façade is a mixture of wood and dry stone, similar to the Chalet Vipasca (1968), something of the Ellenberger trademark. Today, the own-ers of the International Summer Camp or the previous Clinique de la Moubra, have purchased the Bouby chalet. The Summer Camp is now linked to the Quatuor. The owners wished to preserve the chalet de-signed by Ellenberger without transform-ing the exterior: some interior adaptations have, however, been carried out. A heritage from the 70s has thus been saved. �
