HUSKIE Logs 30001h Hovr

An HH-43 HUSKIE at Sheppard AFB, Texas, recentlyílew its 3000th houï to become the firstHH-43 in theAirForce to log that many flying hours. The helicopter,number5S-1854, was flown on the historic flight by CaptJohn R. Two Rescuemen Socrif ice Lives For Wounded

Pleiku (?AF) - Although its first permanently assignedpersonnel reported for duty only a year ago; in January1966, Det 9 of theSSth ARRSq(MAC), has already estab-lished one of SoutheastAsiars most outstanding records.By the end of October the detachment had made g2 com-bat pickups, of which 60 were logged as combat saves.This totalrepresents one fifthof allcombat saves loggedin SEA during the first 10 months of 1966. It is evenmore remarkable when it is noted that Det 9 operatedwith only two HH-43F helicopters and an average of sixpilots, fourcrew chiefs, and four pararescue specialistsduring this period.

Operations Hawthorne, Paul Revere II, and Paul ReverefV, all waged in Vietnamts central highlands, presentedthe busiest operational challenges to the unit. DuringHawthorne, 25 members of the 101st Airborne Divisionand one NorthVietnamese were retrievedfromthe battle-field. This required seven night sorties, five of wNchwere flown by Capt Lawrence F. Marcum. Two daysorties were flown during the operation by Capt DarrellA. Lowery. Two other sorties were flown into the areain an effort to extractwounded, btit heavySO-caliber fireprevented the hovering that was necessary.

During PauI Revere II, the detachment was called onto assist the 1st Air Cavalry Division in the evacuationof wounded. With the aid of ground radar, Capt FredrikM. Bergold led a flight of two helicopters into the hostileand fog-shrouded Chu Pong Mountain area to evacuatetwo wounded soldiers. InAugust, Capt Richard L. Card-well led two helicopters into the same area to evacuatefive wounded soldiers. This was another minimumweather rescue that required instrument flying. In lateOctober, the 4th and 25th InÍantry Divisions made heavycontact near the Cambodian border west of Plei Djereng,

andPaulRevereWwas underway withDet 9 again cal ledupon to make battlefield pickups. During this operationtwo rescue crew members died as the result of enemyaction while evacuating wounded soldiers at night. Thecopilot of the HH-43, Zndl,t George H. Bonnell, III, wasfatally injured and the crew chief, A2c Francis D. Rice,was killed when enemy fire struck the rescue helicopteras it hovered over the canopied jungle. Three woundedsoldiers who had been hoisted to the helicopter alsoperished.

When first arriving at the site, Capt Carlton P. Ver-meys, pilot of the downed helicopter, had been advisedthat the areawas secure since no contact had been madewith the enemy for 45 minutes. A flare had been lighted

by the ground party to mark their exact position. At the

time of thetragedy, A2cAllenR.Stanek, the pararescue-

man, was helping load wounded into litters preparatory

to hoisting them aboard the HUSKIE. Disregarding their

own saÍety, the pararescueman and several soldiersdashed toward the downed helicopter and extracted Cap-tain Vermeys, who was slightly injured, and LieutenantBorurell from the flaming wreckage.

Due to the renewed fighting, the cover helicopter wasunable to evacuate the two pilots that night. The nextmorning an HH-43 crew from Det g made al attempt topick up their downed comrades but were waved off dueto the intense ground fire. Undeterred by the obvioushazard, lstl,t Michael E. Davis and his crew made asecond attempt, and were able to carry out the rescuesuccessfully. To make the pickup, LieutenantDavis heldthe chopper in a 150-foothover over the tops of the treeswhile SSgtCharles Jenkins, pararescueman, dropped in-to thehostile area and prepared the survivors for hoist-ing. Ground fire intensified as the helicopter headed forthe medical evacuation station. Soon a-fterward, the sameHH-43crew evacuated a critically wounded soldier froma nearby area. Sharing in the hazardous missions wereCaptain Lowery, the eopilot, and A2c Hamy J. Hull,crew chief. Lieutenant Bonnell died later at Clark AB,P.I. , from his injuries.

That afternoon the detachment's second helicopter,flown by Capt Dale R. Tyree, detachment commander,evacuated six personnel from the jungle. On the lastsortie of the day this helicopter was hit by 5O-caliberfire, but made it to a forwarding operating area for aforced landing. This helicopter was returned to Pleikuin November by Chinook helicopter, and detachmentmaintenance personnel replaced components and patcheddamage doneby eightS0-caliberhits and theforced land-ing.

This was the third time a helicopter had been rebuiltduring the yearby the maintenancemen underthe super-vision of SMSgt Elton L. Tisdale. In praising Det 9maintenance personnel, Captain Tyree said, I'Our mis-sions usuallycome in big bunches, and these men alwayshad our two choppers available when most needed. "

The detachment had flown 329 missions through theend of October. Of these 252 were Iocal base rescue,22 aircrew recovery, 13 medical evacuations, and 42

base support. The two helicopters logged 608 hours, ofwhich 205 were in combat, and the in-commission rate

averaged 91 percent.To date, the small unit's members have collectively

received: 14 Distinguished Flying C ros s es, two Airmen'sMedals, 21 Air Medals, two Air Force CommendationMedals, and five Purple Hearts, Several other awards,including Íour Silver Stars, are pending. Additionally,in the fourpast months that the new, fast-growingPleikuAirBasehas conducted anAirman of theMonth program,

members of Det t have twice been selected for this honor.

Q. (Applies UH-2) WHEN THE FUEL PRECHECKPANEL DOOR IS CLOSED, WHAT MUST OCCUR IFTHE PHENOLIC BLOCK ON THE DOORIS TO PROP-ERLY PERFORM ITS TUNCTION? WHY IS THIS IM-PORTANT?

A . To properly perform its function, the phenolic block,P/N K683049-25, located on the fuel preeheck paneldoor, P/N K683049-5, must make positive contact withthe actuator, P/N K683135-5. The actuator is locatedjust inside the precheck panel opening; it actuates themicroswitch, which energizes the fuel precheck paneland vents the aux tanks when the precheck door isopened (see illustration). If, when the precheck door isclosed, adistinct'tclickris not heard, the phenolic blockis not forcingthe actuatorinboard enoughto de-energizethe fuel precheck panel and close the aux tank vents.When the tanks cannot be pressurized, fuel will nottransfer from the aux tanks into the helicopterts fuelsystem and, with the panel energized, there will be aconstant battery drain. To correct this malfunction, itis suggested that the phenolic block be lowered on thedoor, 0.25 inch. This can be accomplished by remov-ing the block, trimming therubber sealdown to the doordoubler strip and reinstalling the block. A 0.025 shimwill be required under the block because the lower edgeof the block will overlap the door doubler strip. Referto the illustration for shim position. Fill the originalrivet holes with a sealer'or install rivets. To checkswitch actuation, open and close the doorwhile listeningfor the distinct "click.

Q. (Applies HH-43) ARE THE INTERNAL FUEL CA-PACITIES FOR THE HH -43B AND HH-43F IDENTICAL?

Á. No. The HH-4BB will hold three gallons more thanthe HH-43F. The "Btr has bladder-type fuel cells whilethe "F", because of its role in a combat zone, has self-sealing cells. Self-sealing fuelcells have a thicker wallwhich reduces fuel quantity. The internal capaeities ofthe HH-438 and HH-43F are: HH-438 - 133 gallonsforward, 65 gallons aft; total gallons - 198. HH-43F -

131 gallons forward, 64 gallons aÍt; total gallons - 195.

If thebearingis installed properly, the thrust race will slip on easilyand seat flush against the cross assembly. Check bothtop and bottom bearings in the cross assembly. If it isfoundthat thethrust racewill notseat properlyon eitherbeariag, it indicates that the lag pin bearing is incor-rectly installed and the retention assembly should be re-turned to overhaul. In this case, rnaintenance person-nel should procure another retention assembly and in-stall it after a satisfactorv cheek has been made.

Third ARRGp IO-At 1912L hours on the evening of12 Sept 66, Det 8, 38th ARRSq, Cam Ranh Bay AB, re-ceived word from the 12th Fighter Wing Command Postthat a.a RMK dredge had exploded in the bay and a Det 8helicopter with firefighters was requested. Three min-utes later, Capt John B. Riederich, pilot, a.nd his crew,2nd Lt Ronald W. Murray, copilot, SSgt James M. Bren-nan and A1c Thomas A. Paschal, rescue firefightingspecialists, were airborne.

Although a heavy rain was falling and the night hazewas thick, Captain Riederich easily sighted the glowfrom the blazing dredge. A brief evaluation of the situ-ation showed the dredge to be located approximately 200yards offshore. There being no space aboard the ves-sel to accommodate the fire suppression kit, CaptainRiederich attenFted to extinguish flames on the deck byusing the helicopterrs downwash. This effort was quick-ly abandoned when he realized that the fire was origi-nating in the ship's hold a:rd engine compartments.

Lieutenant Murray caught sight of a small sand barabout 200 feet from the dredge ald the two firemen with

the fire suppression kit were landed there. CaptainRiederich then brought the helico'pter to a hover andilluminated the area with flood snd lqnfing lights. Ser-geant Brennqn and Airman Paschal qurckly armed thefire suppression kit and ran out all the hose they bad -

150 feet. Sergeant llsnnan tried to carry the hose tothe dredge, but fell into deep water about 40 feet outfrom the sand bar and was unable to continue. An RMKemployee dived from the dredge and swam to assistSssnnnn, but the heavy hose and nozzle were too muchfor the two of them. Other RMK employees rowed asrnall boat from the dredge to the sand bar, where theytook aboard the two firemen and the hose nozzle, butupon beginning the return trip to the dredge, they real-ized that the hose was not long enough to reach from thesand bar to the burning boat.

At this point, Captain Riederich, who had continuedlighting the area, brought hÍs HH-43 back into action.He laaded on the sand bar where Lieutenant Murrayhooked up the fire suppression kit. This accomplished,

fhe Foresl PenetrotorAmong the foremost pieces of equipment now in the

inventory of many helicopter rescue crews is the I ForestPenetrator Seat. t' Designed by Kaman Aircraft to makeits way through the interlacing tree braaches and densejungle growth of Southeast Asia, this rescue device isnow being used with great effectiveness by Air Force,Navy, and Army personnel in carrying out their dailymissions. Drring a five-month period, the AerospaceRescue and Recovery Service alone made 14g combat"saves" in Southeast Asia a.nd utilized the penetratorduring the majority of them; many additional rescueswere rnade by the other Services during the same period.Beforethe introduction ofthe forestpenetrator, the res-cue sling was used during the majority of the rescues.When operating over heavily-forested areas, however,there was always the possibility that the sling danglingon the end of the 200-foot cable might become entangledin tbe tree tops. If this occurred, valuable time wouldbe consumed in making the rescue and both the rescueeand his rescuers might be placed in greater jeopardyfrom enemy action.

To add to the versatility of the forest penetrator, theflotation collar, shown below, has been designed for

DESCRIPTION - The Kaman K26-1000-1 forest pene-trator weighs approximately 2I-l/Z pouads, is 34incheslong, 8-1/8 inches in diameter with the three seats(technically called blade assemblies) folded, and 26inches in diameter with the seats extended. Each seatis 4-3/4 inches wide a:rd l-I-I/2 inches long; the uppersurface is covered vrith a aon-slip coating. The seatsare spring-loaded to keep them flush against the sidesof the body of the penetratorwhen in the folded position.A fabric cover protects the stowed saÍety straps andhelps maintain the cylindrical profile. Three 1?-inchzippers are installed on the cover to allow easy accessto the folded saÍety straps which extend to a maximumof 4-feet, 9-1/4 inches. The penetrator is rated forthree men at 3g's (3 men x 200poundsxBg=1800pounds)and has a 30070 saÍety factor beyond its rating. Withthe I-7/2 pound flotation collar in place, the folded dia-meter of the peuetrator is 9 inches and the penetratorwill float withabout six inches of the bodyexposed abovethe surface of the water. The collar is ZO-L/4 incheslong with a7-3/S inch diameter at the top and a 4-inchdiameter at the bottom.

will prevent possible injury to the hands from the up-limit switch on the helicopter hoist when the rescueereaches the aircraJt. The rescuee, or rescuees, shouldalso keep their heads close to the bodyof the penetratorso that tree branches or other obstructions will be un-able to come between them and the hoist cable. Whenthe rescuee reaches a position level with the helicopterdoor, the hoist operator will turn him so that he facesaway from the helicopter and then pull him inside. Noattempt should be made by the rescuee tohelp the crew-man unless so instructed. The crewman will disconnecttherescueefrom thepenetratoronce the device is baJelvinside the helicopter.

Circumstances such as the time available to the res-cuee, his clothing and equipment, physical condition,state of mind, etc., will undoubtedly dictate variationsin this procedure. In ma.ny cases a helicopter crewmanwill drop down to assist or instructions may be givenover the helicopterts public address system or loudhailer if the aircraft is so equipped. (A description oftheseKamaa-designed systems appears inpart IIof thisarticle.) No matter what sequence is used by the res-cuee in extracting the saÍety straps and pulling the seator seats down, the procedure only takes a few secondsto perform. One of the most important things to be re-membered is that the SAFETY STRAPS SHOULD BEUTILIZED AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBIJ. Once the res-cuee is secured to thepenetrator, he ca:n belifted by thestrap alone if the helicopter is suddenly forced to leavethe area or if he is in imminent danger from the enemy.

The strap will also hold him on the seat if heloses con_sciousness (figure ?). Being hoisted to the helicopterwithout the strap in place is obviously hazardous andespecially so if the rescuee is under enemy fire, wouad_ed, injured, or when the penetrator must be hoistedthrough heavy foliage.

For picking up two men (figure 8): (1) The first mansits on one seat and the saÍety strap is secured. (2) Thesecond man sits on the other two seats with his legs overthe first man's legs and the safety strap is secured. (3)Rescuees hold onto each other, tuck their heads in, andsignal the hoist operator aÍter MAKING SURE THE HOISTCABLE IS FREE. (4) The hoist operator brings thesecond maninto the aircraftfirst, then turns thenumberone man away from the aircraft and brings him in. (b)No attempt should be made on the part of the rescueesto assist the hoist operator unless instructed to do so.

When three rescuees are picked up (figure 9), headsshould be kept tucked in and each individualrs saÍetystrap drawn as tightly as possible. During testing atKAC it was found easiest for three men to stand, attachthe straps, a:rd then mount the penetrator. prior to be_ing hoisted, hold as snuglyagainst thecrotch asthe con_ditions permit. The penetratorcan alsobe usedto lowera paramedic or crewman to assist injuredpersonnel andboth can behoisted to the helicopter together. If for anyreason the seat is to beretracted unloaded, ground per_sonnel should be instructed to return the seàt blades tothe folded position.

The foregoing procedures are aimed primarily at thosenot familiar with the forest penetrator seat or who havenot had the benefit of military survival school instructionin its use. Rescuees who have receivedsuch instructionshould, of course, use the procedure recommended byhis military organization. The following rules apply inany event - it is most important that the rescuee: (1)Does not touch the penetrator until it has been groundedto discharge static electricity. (2) passes the sa{etystrap around his body and refastens it to the penetratoras quickly as possible since he will then be assured, asfar as circumstances permit, that he can be saÍely hoistedto the helicopter. (3) Makes certain that both he and thepenetrator are not fouled in the hoist cable at any time.(4) Keeps his hands below the swivel to avoid possibleinjury fromthe up-limit switch. (5) Keeps his head closeto the penetrator body to avoid entrapping branches. (6)

AIÁ.9 CECIL FIELDThe Search and Rescue Unit at NAS Cecil Field, Fla.,

is comparatively small when compared to other organi-zations on the statiol-!fig naval master jet facility forthe Jacksonville area - but like SAR units everywhere,its presence is not only important to morale but, attimes, vital to a downed airman.

A division of the Station Operations Department, theunit is completelyself-sufficient as related to line-levelmaintenance. The members of the crew are a highly-trained, professional group who not only work at theirrespective rates but fly as UH-2 helicopter erewmen aswell. While several aircraft maintenance rates arerepresented, the limited numberof personnel does awaywith the emphasis placed on"specialization" often foundin larger activities -in this unit each man must bewilling and able to assist aaother in keeping their helosttready for rescue.tt

Because of the large number of jet aircraft located atthis base, the SAR crew stays in a ready-alert statusduring all working hours and, in addition, assumes thearea SAR duty every sixth day. This extends coveragefrom Cecil Field to include the Naval Air Stations atMayport and Jaeksonville. With a constant awarenessthat'tseconds often count in rescue,'r personnel practice

With the helicopter hovering overhead,and Airmarr Paschal feeding out hose, Sergeant Brennanproceeded to the engineroom and began to fight the fire.However, as he edged past a pstaining wall, he slippedand fell into a hold filled with diesel fuel. He motionedforAirmanPaschalto take the nozzle and continue fight-ing the fire. Paschal extingu_ished the blaze in the for-ward area of the retaining wall and then moved backthrough the engine room, where, having removed someof the diesel fuel from his clothes, Sergeant Brsnnqnrelieved him and finished extinguishing the fire.

Both Brennan and Paschal agreed that this was thehottest fire they had ever encouatered. An RMK officiallater said, "The efforts of these firefighters and thishelicoptercrew resultedin thesaving of apieceof equip-ment valued at more than three million dollars and ofvital need to the war eÍïort. r!

DUAL GUARDIAN-Carrying a fire suppression kÍt, this HH-43from Det 2, 38th ARRSq, ítiás u p.."ur,iioou.y à"Ult o"u. the run-way as bombers take off. The maneuver would give the rescuecrew in the chopper several critical minutes advÀtage in reach-ing a crash scene with the FSK and rescue equipment should suchan emergency arise. On numerous occasions HUSKIE crews likethis have quickly switched to their other capability by Iowering theFSKto the ground and then speeding to the assistance of an airmandowned in the jungle and awaiting rescue. Det 2 has flown 1500operational and support sorties since Oct 1, 1965, and accumulatedwell over 1,100 hours without accident or incident. Det 2 person-nel have been awarded four Distinguished Flying Crossesj tt AirMedals and an Air Force Commendation Medal. But accordins toCapt Edwin J, Christy, commander of the unit, the best awaidsthey receive are the comments of the fighter pilots who take oflfor the North with the com-forting sight of the Hlt-43 flying nearby.(USAF photo)
