What is IMS?

IP Multimedia Subsystem3GPP IMS standards define a network domain

dedicated to the control and integration of multimedia services.IMS is defined by 3GPP from Release 5 onwards (2002)

IMS builds on IETF protocolsBased upon SIP, SDP, COPs and Diameter protocols3GPP have enhanced these IETF protocols for mobility

SIP as core protocolCore SIP defined in IETF’s RFC 3261Already used in Fixed IP for end-to-end calls.


Why to standardise?

Indeed, some real-time IP telephony applications work quite well without any need for 3GPP nor for TISPAN standard but, taking the example of the leading one:It’s a single commercial entity, i.e. a single point of failure, Proprietary solutions have been developed for all basic aspects,including:

QoS handling, Charging,Voicemail, Interworking (unacceptable quality with some mobile networks),Video component (just introduced)

Other aspects will be introduced when so desired by the commercial entity, e.g.:

Call forwarding, Conference call, Enforced Fraud/Privacy, Emergency services / Legal interception

Nobody knows how these proprietary solutions will scale

⇒ Let’s avoid the telecom world to end up with the same model as the IT one, i.e. one dominating company which dictates its protocol, architecture, service and control the full business

⇒ Standardised solutions are harder and longer to achieve, but that’s the price to pay to define an open system

TISPAN in an ETSI Technical CommitteeTISPAN specifies a Next Generation Network which:

Offers standardised multimedia services based on xDSLUses the 3GPP IMS for service handling, ensuring FMCSupports legacy POTS services (PSTN/ISDN Emulation)

• This is the same as the PSTN/ISDN Telephony service over an IP infrastructure

• This will enable the use of the existing ISDN Supplementary services without changing the phone at home

• So NGN will replace the soon becoming obsolescent PSTNSupports a set of fully-defined Supplementary Services (Simulation) including Voice

• Similar - but not identical - to existing PSTN service• Based on IMS capabilities• TISPAN’s specific needs to accommodate Wireline access to

IMS are covered by a collaboration between TISPAN and 3GPP: TISPAN-specific IMS extensions are prepared in TISPAN and proposed for inclusion to 3GPP IMS Rel-7. Joint meetings between TISPAN and 3GPP.
