The Stora Kopparbergwerks Museum, Falun (Sweden) by Ainar Stenklo This museum is that of probably the oldest surviving public company in the world, having been owned by a fellowship of master miners since the 11th century. The museum has been in existence for over zoo years as a collection (fig. 74, but was opened to the public only in 1922. The estension of mining operations made it necessary to move the old buildings to another site in I 964 and the opportunity was taken to esteiid them (fig. 77) so that exhibition space is now about 2,000 scluare metres (2 I, 7 00 square feet). An average of about zo,ooo visitors a year includes company employees ;ind organized school parties. Tours are usually guided, with two or three guides speaking at least two foreign languages employed in the summer months. School parties are received mainly in the autumn and spring and are given lessons in history, sociology or geology. Some zoo-300 such lessons arc given in a year. The company started as a copper-mining enterprise, but from 173 J ironworks were added (fig. 78). It is now diversified into forestry, pulp, newsprint and other activities, these being illustrated in the museum. It owns and operates power stations sild steel works* 76. L’entreprise dont dépend ce musée est sans doute la société commerciale la plus ancienne qui existe encore aujourd’hui, puisqu’elle appartient à une corporation de maitres mineurs depuis le XI^ siècle. Le musée existe depuis plus de deux cents ans e11 t m t que collection (fig. 76)’ mais il n’a été ouvert au public qu’en 1922. Le déve- loppement des opérations minières a rendu nécessaire en 1964 la réinstallation du musée sur un autre site et l’on a saisi cette occasion de l’agrandir, si bien que la surface actuelle d’exposition est de quelque 2 o00 mètres carrés (fig. 77).

I ,e musée reçoit en moyenne 2 0 o00 visiteurs par an ; ce sont surtout des employés de l’entreprise et des groupes scolaires organisés. Les visites sont généralement h uuidées ; pendant les mois d’été, on emploie deux ou trois guides parlant au moins deux langues étrangères. Les groupes scolaires viennent surtout en automne et au printemps ; deux à trois cents lesons d’histoire, de sociologie et de géologie sont organisées annuellement à leur intention.

A l’heure actuelle, elle exerce des activités diverses (exploi- tation forestière, fabrication de pâte à papier et de papier journal, etc.), qui sont illustrées dans les expositions du musée. Elle possède et exploite aussi des centrales électriques et des aciéries.
