La question de l'historicite de JEsus, qui a deja donne lieu a tant de travaux pour et contre (on en trouvera une bonne bibliographie dans les vingt-six premieres pages du livre de GOGUEL), a ete posee a nouveau avec 6clat en France par un article de P. L. COUCHOUD: ? L'6nigme de Jisus > (Mercure de France, 1"r mars 1923, 344-406), dans lequel l'auteur niait l'existence de Jisus. Cet article a ete discute par GOGUEL: '< A propos de 1'enigme de Jisus ? (Id., 1er juin 1923, 389-404), dont le point de vue qui represente, peut-on dire, celui de l'orthodoxie protestante (l'auteur est professeur d'exegese a la Faculte de theologie protestante de Paris), s'est rencontre avec celui du R. P. L]ONCE DE GRANDMAISON: ( JsSUS dans l'histoire ? (Id., 15 aofit 1923, 22-48). COUCHOUD est revenu i la charge avec ? Le mystere de Jisus > (Id., 1"' mars 1924, 335-358); des polemiques oratoires on,t eu lieu a Paris aux entretiens de janvier-avril 1924 du groupement Union pour la verite, entre COUCHOUD et GOGUEL. Et chacun, restant sur ses positions, expose maintenant ses argu- ments devant le grand public.

II ne nous appartient pas ici de prendre parti dans le debat. Chacun des auteurs manie les textes, ou l'absence de texte, chre- tiens ou non chretiens, avec une egale maitrise de l'art de l'histo- rien, et en tire cependant des conclusions diam6tralement opposees; quant au lecteur, il jugera en general beaucoup plus suivant son temperament que par entrainement rationnel: il pourra cependant remarquer facilement, tant chez l'un que chez l'autre auteur, que les faits que retiennent les partisans de l'historicit6 diminuent en nombre au fur et a mesure que progresse la critique des textes sacres. II pourra d'ailleurs remarquer aussi que lc. conclusions de GOGUEL sont aussi differentes des theses de l'orthodoxie catholique (DE GRANDMAISON) que celles de COUCHOUD. Tandis que COUCHOUD cherche a expliquer le christianisme sans faire appel A l'homme- Jesus qui n'a pas existe, et que, pour lui, le mystere de Jisus con- siste proprement dans 1' ? enfantement d'un dieu dans un groupe social >, GOGUEL conclut que ? JESUS n'a pas cr66 l'eglise i, il n'a ( pas ete, au sens ordinaire du mot, un fondateur de religion ,,

revealing his plan of exploration at the time of the first voyage ! What would not students of the vexed question of COLUMBUS' pur- pose give to have such a document and to be confident of its autlhen- ticity !

Mr. DE LA RONCIERE claims to have brought to light such a map, one that has been in the possession of the Bibliotheque Nationale at Paris since 1849. Labelled < Carte portugaise du xvIe siecle a, this map never attracted any particular attention until DE LA RON- CIERE had occasion to examine it in connection with his recent investigation of the medieval geography of Africa.

DE LA RONCIERE'S thesis is presented in French and somewhat Frenchy English in a magnificent volume accompanied by a photo- graphic reproduction of the map and a reduced facsimile in colors. Popular interest has been stirred by this publication and not a few reviewers have accepted the author's conclusions without subjecting to the acid test of criticism the chain of reasoning by which they were reached. To do full justice, and no more than justice, to to the author's theory, however, demands a detailed knowledge of the life and works of COLUMBUS and of the cartography of his period - something which few scholars possess. Among these few we may number EDWARD HEAWOOD, librarian of the Royal Geographical Society, and Dr. G. E. NUNN, author of the recent volume, < The Geographical Conceptions of COLUMBUS >> (American Geographical Society, Research Series, No. 14), New York, 1924
