Pour son patrimoine !Ancienne capitale de la Chrétienté au moyen âge, Avignon est une ville où l’histoire est présente à tous les coins de rues. L’ensemble de ces monuments font que la ville est classée au Patrimoine Mondial par l’UNESCO.

Plus grand palais gothique du monde, le Palais des Papes fut le centre de la papauté au XIVe siècle. Possession des Comtes des Provence, Avignon a été choisie pour son im-plantation stratégique sur l’axe Rhône-Saône qui permet une frontière commune avec la France et le Saint Empire Germanique. Ainsi seul les villes desservies par un pont permettant de franchir cette frontière pouvaient prétendre à la papauté. C’est le cas d’Avignon avec le pont Saint-Bénézet.

Le célèbre « Pont d’Avignon » ou de son vrai nom, le Pont Saint-Bénézet, un monument important à visiter car c’est l’élément principal de l’histoire de la ville. Selon la légende, c’est en 1177 qu’un jeune berger appelé Bénézet et se disant envoyé de Dieu vint à Avignon pour construire un pont sur le Rhône. Moins de dix ans après, le pont était livré. Performance d’exécution vite attribuée à l’intervention divine. Le pont prenait appui sur les piles de pierre d’un pont romain du Bas Empire, surmontées d’un tablier en bois. Au siècle suivant, les avignonnais profitaient d’un pont entièrement en pierre, sur le modèle de celui que nous connaissons. Le pont marquait une frontière. C’était d’abord un grand péage qui barrait le fleuve sur l’axe Nord-Sud. À partir du moment où il commence à s’effondrer, on ne le répare plus parce qu’au milieu du XVIIe siècle, c’est l’époque où les manufactures françaises voient d’un mauvais œil la concurrence d’Avignon et préfèrent laisser tomber le pont pour éviter la contrebande. Également ce sont les forts courants du fleuve du Rhône et une courte période glacière au XVIIe siècle qui dégraderont la majorité de l’ouvrage.

Si l’histoire vous passionne, vous trouverez au sein des remparts d’Avignon une mine de lieux. Classés au Patrimoine Mondial par l’UNESCO, les remparts encerclent la vieille ville, vous pourrez y trouver des dizaines d’églises, de chapelles, de musées et des lieux d’expositions qui combleront cet intérêt.

For its Heritage!Ancient capital of Christendom in the middle Ages, the city of Avignon is where history is present at all the corners of streets. All of these historic monuments make the city a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

First of all, the unavoidable Palace of Popes at the time when Avignon was the world center of the Papacy in the 14th century. Nowadays it is the largest Gothic pa-lace in the world and offers 25 visiting tours (ceremonial rooms, private apartments of the Pope, etc.)

The famous «Pont d’Avignon» or its real name, the Pont Saint-Bénézet, an important monument to visit be-cause it is a major witness in the history of the city. Ac-cording to legend, it was in 1177 that a young shepherd called Bénézet and claiming to be sent by God came to Avignon to build a bridge over the Rhone. Less than ten years later, the bridge was usable. Performance of execu-tion - fast attributed to the divine intervention - which re-lied on the piers of stone of a Roman bridge of the Lower Empire, surmounted by a wooden apron. In the following

century, people enjoyed a bridge entirely made of stone, on the model of the one we know. The bridge marked a frontier. It was first a large toll that barred the river on the north-south axis. From the moment it began to collapse, it was no longer repaired; because in the middle of the 17th century, French manufactures saw the competition of Avi-gnon with a bad eye and preferred to leave fall the bridge to avoid smuggling. Also the strong currents of the Rhône River and a short ice age in the 17th century will degrade the majority of the construction.

So in historical terms, Provence is older than France itself, and was a centre of culture learning and commerce long before Paris and northern France acquired the territorial importance that they have today. So, if you are a passionate about history you can take a look of the ramparts of Avignon that encircle the old town and there’s World Heritage by UNESCO. You can find dozens of churches, chapels, museums and ex-hibitions or performances that will pleased you and will capture all your attention.
