Solemnity of Mary, Holy Mother of God (Holyday of Obligation)

    Monday, December 31, 2018

    Vigil Mass—5:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 1, 2019

    8:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m.

Some years ago, I read Saint Pope Paul VI’s reflection on his visit to Nazareth; I wanted to share with you some of his words, as they are profound and very meaningful for us as we celebrate our feast day, The Feast of the Holy Family. Saint Paul VI’s Reflection on his visit to Nazareth:

We ask therefore the favor of joining Our Lady, mother of the home at Nazareth, and her humble but courageous husband St. Joseph, in their intimacy with Jesus Christ, her human and divine Son. Nazareth – school of the Gospel Nazareth is the school in which we begin to understand the life of Jesus. It is the school of the Gospel. Here we learn to observe, to listen, to meditate, and to penetrate the profound and mysterious meaning of that simple, humble, and lovely manifestation of the Son of God. And perhaps we learn almost imperceptibly to imitate Him. The lesson of silence… The lesson of silence: may there return to us an appreciation of this stupendous and indis-pensable spiritual condition, deafened as we are by so much tumult, so much noise, so many voices of our chaotic and frenzied modern life. O silence of Nazareth, teach us recollection, reflection, and eagerness to heed the good inspirations and words of true teachers; teach us the need and value of preparation, of study, of meditation, of interior life, of secret prayer seen by God alone. … of domestic life The lesson of domestic life: may Nazareth teach us the meaning of family life, its harmony of love, its simplicity and austere beauty, its sacred and inviolable character; may it teach is how sweet and irreplaceable is its training, how fundamental and incomparable its role on the social plane. … of work The lesson of work: O Nazareth, home of “the carpenter’s son,” We want here to understand and to praise the austere and redeeming law of human labor, here to restore the conscious-ness of the dignity of labor, here to recall that work cannot be an end in itself, and that it is free and ennobling in proportion to the values – beyond the economic ones – which motivate it.

I will be speaking on these three aspects of family: silence, domestic life and work this weekend, see you all as we celebrate our feast day. God bless you,

    Father John

    Youth Ministry News

Today’s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflic ng schedules and commitments, a young man, tes ng the limits, has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big city. Mary and Joseph search fran cally, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and scholars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the me of Jesus, the temple was the religious center of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gathered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. S ll, everyone longed to journey to the temple to par cipate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obliga ons of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tradi on. There has always been an apprecia on in Chris anity for the value of pilgrimage—the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life’s journey to God, and a sense of connec on to important events in our family history. During the Christmas season, many of us undertake pilgrimages to the family homestead for fes val meals, to the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps even to a beau ful manger scene or fes val of lights. There are few be er days than this in our calendar for spending me with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one gets le behind!
