Dear XC and Track & Field Alumni,

In 1965, I started my senior year and fourth year as a student- athlete at DePaulUniversity (The Little School Under The Tracks) and now at age 65 I am starting my fourth year as head coach. This is also my 50th year as a runner and/orcoach. It has been a memorable and long run!

Our program has made great strides both athletically and academically over thelast three years, culminating in being ranked accademically as the No. 1 Men’sTrack & Field Team in the USA in 2009. DPU Cross Country was ranked (men13th and women 11th) academically while Track & Field (Women) was ranked19th academically. In the BIG EAST conference, four of our teams were rankedNo.1 academically.

DPU cannot match that record athletically yet, but we are improving each year and our goal is to be among the best in the USA. Last year saw our men’s Cross Country team ranked in the top 15 in our NCAA region for the first time. Our goal this year is to have both the men and women ranked.

We only lost one student- athlete to graduation (Rob Morgan) from our men’s top runners and we have every one of our top women back for Cross Country in 2009. Our incoming freshmen student-athletes will certainly help us achieve our goals. Although most of our incoming student- athletes are from the Chicagoland area, we do have Cross Country student- athletes coming in from California, the Philippines, Indiana, Michigan, and Alaska.

Our top returning female runners should include Mary Cate Quiett (Ind.), Terah Cheatham (Polo), Stephanie Hughes (Chicago), Kelly Pickering (Ohio), Claire O’Brien (St. Charles), Erin Lakie (Lockport), Kim Boisvert (Belvidere), Kelsey Dolan (Chicago), Cari Krikorian (Lincolnwood), Toni Salvatore (Minn.), and Stacy Schmitz (Wisc.).

Our top returning male runners include Luke Rygh (Oswego), Jakub Kolacz (Naperville), Matthew Graham (Scotland), Brian Begalke (Wisc.), Dennis Baliga (Rockford), Greg Udzielak (Park Ridge), and Chris Gallardo (Chicago).

Coach Andy Craycraft (800M runner from the University of North Carolina) started his law practice but will be back again as my part- time coach. Meaghan Hanifin, who is also a lawyer here in Chicago, will be a volunteer coach. I also have two new graduate assistants: Stephanie Williams, a sprinter, who just graduated from DPU and Ryan Rupcich who was a roommate of former graduate assistant and Blue Demon, Ryan Moore at Fresno State.

Our first XC meet was September 4, 2009 at Channel Runne Park in Lincolnwood, IL. Sophomore Matthew Graham broke the course record by over a minute, capturing the men’s individual title. Toni Salvatore led the women’s team with a 12th-place showing. The men and women finished fourth and third, respectively. Special thanks to all the alumni who came out to assist running the meet.

The BIG EAST Conference Championships will be held up at Parkside, Wisconsin on Saturday, October 31, 2009. I do not have the times for that meet but check the website as we get closer to the event.

Let me know if you need anything from me.

All the best,Coach Pat Savage
