A recent article in LI Business noted that arts and cultural organizations play an important role in Long Island’s economy, spending nearly $1.8 billion

annually. The arts have always been a vibrant part of life

in Huntington and on Long Island, and their economic impact is an important part of their role. The fall brings many exciting events at Huntington Arts Council. The dedicated staff brings programs and activities that continue to showcase artists, arts organizations and educational activities.

The busy summer season has ended, and memories from the 53rd Huntington Summer Arts Festival remain strong. The festival continued to offer 42 evenings of entertainment featuring something for everyone. Our Main Street Gallery housed several successful shows, and continues its busy schedule. Our Invitational Show Beyond the Sound features the work of three of our members through October 13, followed by Nightmare on Main Street and our annual Art Auction On the Block. The Huntington Art Walk will be held on Sunday, October 21 (see page 23) bringing people to Huntington to view artwork at several Huntington arts organizations.

We are proud to host the first NYSCA/NYFA Artist as Entrepreneur Boot Camp

Program October 11 through 14. This program will help artists to build essential business skills to support their creative careers. Our NYSCA Long Island Arts Grants for the Arts program has been accelerated. Panel deliberations will be held this fall to give our grantees earlier word on funding for 2019. Our Arts in Education Journey Program offers five multi-cultural arts education workshops for teachers. We are very proud that HAC is an approved Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) sponsor by NYS Department of Education.

The activities at HAC are exciting and enriching. Please visit us often and enjoy the arts along with us.

Dear Friends,

On May 1, 2018 the Huntington Town Board and the Huntington Beautification Council issued a 2018 Beautification Award to the Huntington Public Art Advisory

Committee in recognition of the 25 public art projects installed on selected Traffic Signal Boxes in Huntington Village and Huntington Station since 2015. Designed by local and regional artists, these public art installations have been very popular with Town residents and visitors alike, providing creative accents that enhance the uniqueness

and livability of these two important pedestrian retail districts in our community.

Images and further information about these 25 signal box project installations can be found on the Town’s website at www.HuntingtonNY.gov/TrafficSignalBoxes. However, as with any artwork, these are best experienced in person, so please look for these projects as you travel in Huntington Village and Huntington Station (see the above webpage for downloadable maps of signal box project locations).

Due to the positive community response, a new round of signal box project installations has been approved by the Town Board, which are expected to take place this fall. These new projects have been funded by the

Huntington Cultural Affairs Institute, Inc., a non-profit organization affiliated with the Town, along with generous contributions from the Huntington Village and the Huntington Station Business Improvement Districts (BIDs). This support will enable the installation of 11 new signal box public art projects on Main Street and New York Avenue in both Huntington Village and Huntington Station.

I invite you join me in looking forward to these new creative installations delighting us in the coming months as we journey through our community.

Sincerely,

SupervisorTown of Huntington

In May the Huntington Arts Council celebrated our 55th Anniversary by honoring three outstanding artists, recognizing their individual contributions

to the arts and arts education: Lisa Hock Mack, Director of Huntington Fine Arts with the Harry & Sandy Chapin Arts and Humanitarian Award, Stan Brodsky, Artist and Robert Carter, Artist & Educator both with the Harry & Sandy Chapin Legacy Award. The event took place in the Huntington Fine Arts space in Greenlawn which was transformed for the celebration, but maintained the feel and energy of the

amazing work that takes place there every day. The evening of dinner, live music, dancing and silent auction was

attended by friends, family, HAC staff and board, Josh Chapin, Harry and Sandy’s son who helped present the awards as well as Huntington Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci. In addition to the awards the honorees received several proclamations and letters of congratulations from local and state officials.

The success of this event was the result of the dedication of so many people. Our sincere gratitude goes out to our honorees and their families, Celebration Co-Chairs Samuel E. Miller & Eileen Kathryn Boyd, the Celebration committee, HAC staff, HFA staff, members of the board, sponsors, donors, state and local officials, volunteers, and members

of the community. A special thank you to board member and Creative Director/Owner of re:Design Paul Biedermann and Independent Fine Art Professional, Tonito Valderama. Paul for his expertise and creative development of the new brand image of HAC and for designing all of the signage and communication for the event, Tonito, for providing his unique environmental art installation for display. Performances by Huntington High School String Quartet; Christopher Chang, Arielle Harvey, Haley Mortell and Hannah Bailin, Classical Guitarist Christopher Gotzen-Berg and Dudley Music; set the stage for this celebration of HAC and the arts community. It was a night to be remembered!

The Asian-American Cultural Circle of Unity was awarded a $5000 grant from the Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs to stage a performance titled Cultural Diversity on the South Shore. The performance took place at the Bayard Arboretum in June.

Illustrator Elizabeth Cassidy’s Peaceful Revolution greeting cards, featuring her artwork and writing, are now being carried in the Nassau County Museum of Art’s museum store.

Dawn Daisley won second place in the National Ink Show at East End Arts and at BACCA.

well as show at b.j. spoke gallery in October.

Suffolk County Legislator Dr. William Spencer recently requested Beth E. Levinthal, VP of the HAC Board, to represent his district on the Citizen’s Advisory Board (CAB) for the Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs. Following a legislative vote, County Executive Steve Bellone appointed Levinthal to serve on the CAB for a two-year term.

The Huntington Arts Council is proud to administer the arts grants throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties for the New York State Council on the Arts’ Decentralization (DEC) program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the NYS Legislature. This program is offered in three categories: the Creative Communities grant, which is geared towards growth of the arts in communities, the Creative Learning grant, which is available for in-school and after-school projects; and the Creative Individual grant, extended to the working artist. For more information email Grants for the Arts Coordinator Emily Dowd at [email protected] or call 631-271-8423 x 18.

2019 Grants

Currently the panels, comprised of a diverse group of professionals with specific expertise, are in the process of deciding on the 2019 recipients. Panelists review applications and prepare recommendations for the Huntington Arts Council’s Board of Directors, which has fiduciary responsibility. Staff members are present at the panel meetings to ensure that proper procedures are followed, but do not participate in the deliberations. This new grants timetable will ensure that all applicants will receive notification before the holiday season whether or not they have received funding for the 2019 season.

2018 DEC In the Spotlight

The Creative Communities grants truly bring together the rich cultural landscape Long Island has to offer! These projects connect families to individuals and everything in between to underserved communities that do not have the access to exceptional cultural programming. For more information on projects like these, please reach out to Emily Dowd, Grants for the Arts Coordinator at [email protected].

EastLine Theatre’s Next Level

The 2018 Decentralization Creative Communities award was instrumental in supporting EastLine’s mission and vision. The productions awarded were God Of Vengeance, the play upon which last year’s Tony-nominated Indecent is based, the original musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest titled Prospero (LIVE), and Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer prize winning Buried Child. EastLine would have been hard pressed to mount any of these productions without the DEC funding, given the technical and artistic elements required to do so the “EastLine way.”

EastLine Theatre is committed to reinventing the classics, exploring modern plays through a new prism, and bringing original works to the attention of the Long Island community. In an intimate black-box space in Wantagh, artists and audiences alike are challenged to step outside of their comfort zones, so they may all be transformed through dynamic stagecraft and uncompromising artistic integrity. Since 2013, EastLine has striven to provide the same quality of theater experienced Off Broadway, only “east” of the city “line.” EastLine is focused on mounting productions of plays seldom (if ever) seen on Long Island that have something to say and that speak to typically under-served audiences. EastLine’s artistic choices and high production values continue to attract some of the best theater talent locally and has helped cultivate a loyal and growing following of patrons, both young and old.

Splashes of Hope

Splashes of Hope, a 501 (c) (3), was founded in 1996 with the mission to transform facilities ‘From Clinical to Colorful. Their team of artists create custom designed hand-painted murals that enhance the environments of hospitals, healthcare centers and social service facilities in over 35 states and throughout the world. The painted scenes are designed to support the

healing process by providing a soothing and uplifting visual focus for patients, families and professionals in the recipient facilities.

Splashes of Hope received one of the 2018 Creative Communities Decentralization Program (DEC) grants. The purpose of the grant is to engage the community through art. Splashes of Hope applied for the grant to hold an interactive painting session at the Huntington Tulip Festival in Heckscher Park, where several hundred people and families gathered together in community from all walks of life, cultures, and generations. Children, their parents, grandparents and friends helped paint in the mural along with artists.

The mural will be installed within WellLife Network in Huntington, in the group room for clients struggling with drug and alcohol abuse.

Dance Visions NY

Dance Visions NY, Inc., (dancevisionsny.org), a not-for-profit dance company under the direction of Beth Jucovy, brings the Isadora Duncan artistic legacy into the present. Through presentations of the authentic Isadora Duncan dances as passed on by Jucovy’s second-generation mentors as well as through presentation of original works influenced by Duncan principles, the company keeps the legacy and aesthetic of Isadora Duncan strong and relevant in our current world. Dance Visions NY’s mission is to enable audiences to experience an emotional, spiritual and intellectual connection to the world of dance. They hope to build and educate dance audiences and are committed to presenting high quality art experiences both locally and beyond.

Dance Visions NY is delighted to have received many NYSCA decentralization grants over the course of its history which has enabled the company to present quality programs locally. The company’s 2018 DEC funded project included programs for Cedarmere, Clark Gardens and Sands Point Preserve. Works were presented both indoor and out, and each individual program was created specifically for the environment in which it was performed. Themes often were of nature, both Duncan and original works evoking the elements of water, earth, air and fire.

Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society

In 1981, after an application was filed to have the Fire Island Lighthouse transferred from the United States Coast Guard to the National Park Service, the 123 year old Lighthouse is declared irreparable and is slated for demolition. The following year a grass roots movement sees the formation of the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society, which starts a fundraising campaign for the restoration of the Light.

In 2018 the Lighthouse was awarded a Decentralization Creative Communities grant. The funds allowed them to offer art themed programs for almost a full year: children’s art programs, workshops and theme days that used the arts to highlight the plight of our environment and it’s specialized creatures.

Huntington Summer Arts FestivalFamily Night Crafts

SummerScape Friends

All new crafts were enjoyed by families and children during this year’s 2018 Huntington Summer Arts Festival, Family Nights. Children of all ages were invited to participate in free crafts at the Huntington Arts Council’s craft table between 6:00-7:00pm. The crafts were themed around the family night shows including dinosaur hats, handheld parrots, magic carpets and more. Coloring pages were available for younger children. We had such a good time with the children we will be doing it again next year!

Meet the Artist Community Engagement Events This summer we had a broad range of Meet the Artist events conducted in tandem with Huntington Summer Arts Festival concerts. These activities are one of the unique components of the HSAF and were designed as ways to engage with our community and audiences by presenting visiting artists in unique settings and formats. 17 Meet the Artist events took place, serving almost 6,200 individuals.  Many events not open to the public were held in smaller venues targeting audiences of students, the elderly or handicapped who

may not otherwise be able to attend a concert. Others involve larger audiences enjoying supplemental performances or activities related thematically to an evening performance. Whether a trip to visit the VA Hospital in Northport, to an interactive musical workshop for students, to master class in improvisation for advanced jazz ensemble students at USDAN Summer Camp for the Arts or unplugged music circle in the park, all demonstrate both the artists’ efforts as well as HAC’s mission to reach out and bring the arts into the larger community.

Thank you to our Huntington Summer Arts Festival volunteers and Huntington Camera Club members for helping make this another great summer! Special thanks to Kathi Galotti, volunteer coordinator!

The 53nd Huntington Summer Arts Festival (HSAF) enjoyed a rousing conclusion with performances by Celtic fusion, Trad/Roots & Rock group Skerryvore from Scotland on August 10, and an evening of Cajun/Creole jambalaya with BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet on August 12. (Even Saturday’s cancellation/rainout of jazz harp virtuoso Edmar Castaneda couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of closing weekend audiences.) Once again, the Festival’s schedule of music, dance and entertainment raced by at a dizzying pace – 42 concerts on the Chapin Rainbow Stage plus five more at the Robert W. Krueger Bandstand in Northport Harbor; something different each night over a span of 7 weeks from June 26 - Aug. 12.

The HSAF is an extraordinary gift from the Town of Huntington to its residents and the entire L.I. community; admission is free to all who venture out and attend. It provides opportunities to see and hear superb artists (more than 1,350 this summer), both local and from across the U.S. and around

the globe, representing an eclectic mix of musical genres and performing arts disciplines. No other Festival on Long Island brings so much variety and world-class talent to the region. The Huntington Arts Council is proud of its stewardship and privileged to curate and present this remarkable Festival.

There are so many to thank for making the Festival such a special event. We thank the Town Council for its support, and the Department of Parks & Recreation, General Services and Public Safety. We also thank the County of Suffolk, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. Special thanks to Presenting Sponsor Canon, USA for its continued commitment. Thank you to our

Concert Sponsors: Daniel Gale Sotheby’s, Folk Music Society of Huntington, Philips Boyne, Start To Finish Remodeling & Handyman and Weber Law Group; In-kind Supporters: D’Addario & Co., King Kullen, Konig & Meyer/Connolly Music, Korg USA, Samson/Hartke and Bob Murphy’s Violin Shop.

Our deepest gratitude is due to all the talented touring artists and ensembles who graced the Chapin Rainbow Stage; to the immensely skilled and hard-working technical staff who make it all seem so effortless; the SummerScape Volunteers without whose devotion and time we could not operate; and the volunteer photographers from the Huntington Camera Club for helping us document the concerts. A special shout-out to HAC’s Arts in Education Coordinator Regina Van Bell for the great craft projects prior to each Tuesday Family Show! HAC’s Board of Directors and dedicated staff are gratefully recognized and appreciated. Partners in presenting merit additional recognition, including the Folk Music Society of Huntington, the Friends of the Coltrane Home, plus the Musicians Performance Trust Foundation for its support of the Long Island

Orchestra. Performing organizations and ensembles meriting both high praise and appreciation include the Huntington Community Band, the Northport Community Band, the Long Island Dance Consortium, Plaza Theatrical Productions, BroadHollow Theatre Productions and the many other local artists and ensembles who devote their time and energy to superb performances.

Last and certainly not least, the success and longevity of the Huntington Summer Arts Festival would not be possible without the support of you, our audience. You’ve shown you care about live performances by attending, enjoying and applauding the artistry you are witness to for more than fifty years now. A huge THANKS to you the public!
