Barcelone a toujours su imprimer sa différence. En architec-ture aussi. Avec Gaudí et ses constructions oniriques qui ontmarqué le passage au XXe siècle. Dont, bien sûr, la SagradaFamilia, exemple le plus connu du modernisme catalan, érigédès 1882 et toujours en travaux. Un siècle plus tard, Barce-lone concentre encore un nombre élevé de bâtiments àl’architecture inventive et colorée.

Pour magnifier cette explosion de formes, de volumes et,surtout, de couleurs, il fallait un metteur en scène. Il s’appelleDavid Cardelús, photographe catalan formé à l’Ecole desbeaux-arts de l’Université de Barcelone et spécialisé dans l’ar-chitecture moderne. Son but, créer des images qui soient à lafois des œuvres d’art et des outils de communication qui il-lustrent la créativité des bâtisseurs.

La photographie architecturale, selon David Cardelús, ce nesont que des lignes, des formes, des textures et des couleurs.Organiser ces éléments au travers de l’objectif, trouver lalumière qui optimise le projet, c’est tout ce qu’il faut pour fixerl’image numérique qui captera l’attention des amoureux del’architecture. Les illustrations de ce portfolio montrent pour-tant que, si la recette est simple, sa mise en pratique exigedes dons artistiques particuliers.

Parmi les qualités de David Cardelús, sa vision graphiquen’est pas la moindre. D’instinct, il simplifie ses cadrages aumaximum et obtient, par la simplicité des lignes, une puis-sance renforcée des compositions qu’il illustre. Pas étonnantdonc que le photographe se réfère aux peintres Mondrian,Rothko ou Scully.

Mais au-delà de la perfection des formes, David Cardelús estpassionné d’urbanisme, sensible à l’inscription des construc-tions modernes dans le paysage urbain. Les architectes, parleurs innovations, modifient inexorablement la ville. Parfois,ils bousculent les habitudes, pour preuve la résistance à l’édi-fication de tours actuellement en Suisse. Mais au bout ducompte, l’architecture est l’un des moteurs de la mutationinexorable du monde où l’on vit.

David Cardelús est basé à Barcelone mais il travaille dans lemonde entier. Durant les quinze dernières années, il a parti-cipé à des expositions sur quatre des cinq continents. David Cardelús, photographer Shapes, structures and colours

Barcelona has always succeeded in asserting its difference, includingin architecture with Gaudí and his dream-like buildings which markedthe crossover to the 20 th century, including the famous Sagrada Familia, the most famous example of Catalan modernism, built in1882 and still in construction. A century later, Barcelona still devotesa large number of buildings to inventive and colourful architecture.

A stage director was needed to leverage this plethora of shapes,structures and especially colours. His name is David Cardelús, a Catalan photographer who trained at Barcelona University’s Fine ArtsSchool and who is specialized in modern architecture. His aim is tocreate images which are both works of art and communication toolswhich illustrate the creativity of buildings.

According to David Cardelús, architectural photography is aboutlines, shapes, textures and colours. To fix the digital image that willdraw the attention of lovers of architecture, all that is required is toorganize these elements through the camera lens and to locate thelight which optimizes the project. The illustrations from the aboveportfolio of projects show that the recipe is simple but that the execution requires special artistic gifts.

Graphic vision and insight are among David Cardelús’s major quali-ties. He instinctively simplifies his images with maximum effect, rein-forcing the power of his compositions through the simplicity of hislines. So it is hardly surprising that the photographer refers to thepainters Mondrian, Rothko or Scully.

Besides seeking perfect shapes, David Cardelús is also passionateabout urban planning and is keen to integrate modern buildings intothe urban landscape. Architects, through their innovations, inevitablymodify the layout of a city. Sometimes, they challenge establishedpractices (the resistance to the building of tower blocks in Switzerlandis an example). Ultimately, however, architecture is one of the driversof change in the world we live in.

David Cardelús is based in Barcelona but works all over the world. Inthe last fifteen years he has participated in exhibitions on four of theworld’s five continents. His greatest rewards come from the recogni-tion of the architects he works for and who acknowledge that his artenhances their own art. n
