Yue Yuan2021

Né en Chine, vit et travaille actuellement à Paris. Il cherche à donner une attention particulière aux moments triviaux de la vie quotidienne. C’est en effet la notion de perception spatiale qui conduit toute l’oeuvre, déployée en installations, photographies, actions et sons. Dans son parcours, la reconstruction de l’expérience urbaine est accentuée dans ses interventions sur place, il tisse un lien fort avec son contexte: des lieux, leurs histoires, les personnes qui les traversent sont autant d’éléments essentiels. Ces histoires, à travers ses observations personnelles et son engagement conceptuel, mettent en scène la vie quotidienne dans un univers de l'absurdité , de magie, de poésie et d’humour.

My work is not to produce art objects, but to produce art events. So I am both an artist and a curator, and for me they just play different roles in an event.

I think we live in a fluid society, all present things are transitory and in flux. It is possible and even necessary to anticipate their eventual disappearance. This is why my artistic practice escapes the present not by resisting the flow of time but by collaborating with it. Through these series of events, I made my own identity and history, and I try to re-think my position in our society in the everyday routines. Often I use daily events and personal experiences as a tool to reflect on contemporary life.

It is my pleasure to share some information about these events with you, through photos, texts and websites. If they can stay in your memory – because for me our bodies are moving art museums - you can carry them anywhere.

I took a piece of each 10 euro banknote (54 pieces) to asse-mble a new one.

The incomplete banknotes are consumed in different ways.

The Grand Verre Gallery is an ephemeral gallery initiated by Yue Yuan, exploring a parasitic format within the modern urban context. The gallery exists for ten weeks with ten invited artists in the window of the Ovision store. This project attempts to a way out of the traditional gallery system by privileging transitory forms, if the city is the theater, the gallery is a mobile stage.

Shared Painting: The gallery and an unknown place share the same painting.

On September 4th, Yue Yuan repainted the wall of the gallery, then he left the painting on a stool abandoned down the street with a note saying "Help yourself" and waited until a stranger left with it.

I carried out a survey in the garden of Luxem-bourg. This garden is located near the Senate where Mètre Étalon is engraved. I asked the people passing by to estimate a meter with their bare eyes and then to mark it. And then I make cuts according to the marks of each one.

On May 24, 2019, I went to Rome. There is Trevi Fountain in this ancient city, and people believe once they cast a coin, they will be able to return to Rome someday in the future. This ritual has attracted people from all over the world, and every day, tourists drop coins when they make wishes. However, I didn't drop coin when I visited the fountain, I chose to take a coin from there and promised to return it during my next visit to Rome.

I decide to show this coin in this exhibition. Can art works “borrow” ideas from others? Even if we don’t know who this person is, his/her identity, nationality, or personal experiences, and not even the wish this person made when he/she dropped the coin, all of these are open. Since this is a "borrowed" piece, it won't be sold or collected. It will only be returned to Rome one day.

How are sculptures being made today? How do you exhibit a sculpture?

I conducted a series of events in supermarkets where I made a temporary 'sculpture' with purchased products. Doing so in a pressing situation is also a highlight of this project, where the sculptures represent not only a construction game, but also the surrounding environment. The sculptures are then taken apart by cashiers. I would also like to twist the process of making and exhibiting, by turning moments of absurdity into sculptures.

Daily Statement Projet with Journal de Saint-Denis, 2020

Invited by Florène (Flore Eckmann and Laurène Barnel), from November 11 to 25, 2020, three micro-events were featured on the back cover of the Journal de Saint-Denis. 51,000 copies were distributed each week in all the city's mailboxes.

"What you see is what you see", this famous quote by Frank Stella, established as a program as well as a definition-justification of practice by the early fathers of minimalistic art, has become emblematic of a willingness to take away all illusion in art.

The performance is inspired by this quote and imposes a negation, by adding a meaning to it through sound manipulation. The sound, defined by the wall's structure (hollow and solid), unravels the unseen behind the wall's surface, creating a random music.

A film roll (36 images) leads the way from the artist's house to the photo lab.

The project is a mise en abîme of the creative process of photography. The photograph tells its own story by showing us, frame by frame, the creator's itinerary to the laboratory.

During my stay at Yishu8, I walked the streets of Paris looking for Post Office trucks, took pictures of them and printed them as postcards, then sent them to the Aunt Martine's home address.

A collection of postcards with Post Office trucks in the streets of Paris. The vehicles form an invisible system in the city, passing information from one point to another. Is there mail for me in the truck I just saw? Is it good or bad news?

These postcards are about the story of a journey between you and me.

Muji aroma diffuser, water of the Seine

This project is part of the exhibition 'Use of a rest room' (The room is used for employees breaks in the store), upon the invitation of Jonás Fadrique.

I replaced the water of the aroma diffuser with water from the Seine, thus suggesting a shape for the distance.

Waiting for the sun is an online exhibition presenting work per day. It will be broadcast one hour, before each sunrise in Paris (GMT + 1), and will be represented in a different version every month between November 1st and March 1st.

This repetitive protocol imposes a temporality and a location to the internet, a medium that goes beyond these concepts. It also recalls the notion of creation: every day we create consciously and unconsciously.
