Getting to Vanier from nearby Metro stations Access to Vanier College is easy from Côte-Vertu and Du Collège Orange Line Metro stations that are also the terminals for several bus routes. Both stations are within walking distance of Vanier College. From Côte-Vertu station walk east on Côte-Vertu then south on avenue Sainte-Croix to Vanier College (821, avenue Sainte-Croix). From Du Collège station walk north on Décarie then east on De l’Église to Vanier College (821, avenue Sainte-Croix).

From DOWNTOWN Take the Metro to Côte-Vertu or Du Collège Metro station then walk to Vanier Collège. Also the 16, 17, 121, and 171 bus routes that service Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Mont-Royal, and Hampstead provide direct access to Vanier College.

From the WEST ISLANDMost bus routes from the Fairview terminal have the Côte-Vertu or Du Collège Metro stations as the fi nal terminal. These are the 202, 215, 225 regular buses and the 214, 216, and 470 express bus routes.

From LAVAL and the NORTHERN FRINGE From the Deux-Montagnes commuter train line, get off at Montpellier and take the 121 or 171 bus to avenue Sainte-Croix and Côte-Vertu. Get off at avenue Sainte-Croix then walk south to Vanier College.

From the Saint-Jérôme commuter train line, get off at Bois-de-Boulogne and take the 171 bus route on Henri-Bourassa, which goes to avenue Sainte-Croix and Côte-Vertu. Get off at avenue Sainte-Croix then walk south to Vanier College.

Laval residents can take the Express 902 bus to the Côte-Vertu terminal then walk to Vanier College, or take either the 144 bus route from Sainte-Dorothée to the Côte-Vertu terminal or the 151 bus route from Sainte-Rose to the Côte-Vertu terminal then walk to Vanier College. They can also take the Metro from Laval and travel either to the Sauvé Metro station then take the 121 bus route or to the Henri-Bourassa Metro then take the 171 bus route to avenue Sainte-Croix and Côte-Vertu. Get off at avenue Sainte-Croix then walk south to Vanier College.

From LONGUEUIL and the SOUTHERN FRINGE Take the Metro from Longueuil to Berri-UQAM then change to the Orange Metro line (direction Côte-Vertu) and get off at Du Collège or Côte-Vertu station and walk to Vanier College. For bus lines and commuter trains that have terminals at the Bonaventure or Vendôme Metro stations, take the Orange Metro line (direction Côte-Vertu) to Du Collège or Côte-Vertu station then walk to Vanier College.

FROM DOWNTOWNNorth on Decarie Expressway (route 15) at the Metropolitan intersection take Decarie Blvd. north, continue to de l’Église, turn right on de l’Église and left on Sainte-Croix.

APPLICATION DEADLINES AND PROCESSFOR THE WINTER (January - May) SEMESTER: NOVEMBER 1 FOR THE AUTUMN (August - December) SEMESTER: MARCH 1

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Québec StudentsAdmission to the College is on the basis of the Quebec Secondary School Diploma (Diplôme d’études secondaires); or the Quebec Diploma of Vocational Education (Diplôme d’études professionelles) with Secondary 5 fi rst and second languages as well as Secondary 4 Mathematics; or equivalent scholarity completed outside the province.

Applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English, may be required to demonstrate adequate English language profi ciency for performance in the English-language milieu of Vanier College. Our Learning Centre staff administers the English profi ciency tests.

Out-Of-Province ApplicantsIn all cases the minimum requirement for Cegep is the equivalent of Secondary V scholarity. While the equivalent level of scholarity for Ontario students is a minimum of 22 credits, for all other provinces it is the successful completion of grade 11 with a varying number of credits depending on the province, and promotion to grade 12. Note that there is a provincial government tuition fee of $1124 per semester for Canadian non-residents of Québec. These fees are subject to change.

International ApplicantsSRAM does an evaluation of educational scholarity at an additional fee for applicants educated outside of Canada, which in most cases is accurate for purposes of admission to the college.

However, the evaluation from the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles is considered offi cial. Applicants educated outside Canada may contact the following Québec government offi ce for an offi cial evaluation of equivalent scholarity:

Note that neither evaluation is concerned with academic performance, or equivalent course content. Relevant transcripts and course descriptions should be submitted with the SRAM application for assessment by Vanier College personnel.

There is a provincial government tuition fee of approximately $5000-$7000 per semester for international students. These fees vary with the Program of study and are subject to change.

It is recommended that international applicants complete the application process by mid-February to enable SRAM to do the evaluation of scholarity. Accepted students will require a Québec Certifi cat d’acceptation and a Canada Study Permit, each of which takes 2 months to process. The Winter semester is open to international applicants only if they already possess these legal status documents.

All applicants applying from outside Canada whose mother tongue and language of instruction is not English must submit recent results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable score for this test is 80 Internet-based or 213 computer-based or 550 paper-based. If the paper-based test is done, then the Test of Written English (T.W.E.) is also recommended. A minimum score of 4.5 is expected. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) results are also accepted with a band score of 7.0 or better.

International candidates may choose to study English at the Language School and, after reaching the advanced level, write the Vanier College Admissions Test. Contact [email protected] for details.

Advanced StandingApplicants who have attended other Cegeps are required to submit a cumulative transcript. Acquired credits may be recognized between Cegeps and may be used to fulfi ll diploma requirements. Students who have attended any other post-secondary institution, such as a university, may be eligible for equivalences on a course-by-course basis (a minimal fee is applied). ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Québec StudentsAdmission to the College is on the basis of the Quebec Secondary School Diploma (Diplôme d’études secondaires); or the Quebec Diploma of Vocational Education (Diplôme d’études professionelles) with Secondary 5 fi rst and second languages as well as Secondary 4 Mathematics; or equivalent scholarity completed outside the province.

Applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English, may be required to demonstrate adequate English language profi ciency for performance in the English-language milieu of Vanier College. Our Learning Centre staff administers the English profi ciency tests.

Out-Of-Province ApplicantsIn all cases the minimum requirement for Cegep is the equivalent of Secondary V scholarity. While the equivalent level of scholarity for Ontario students is a minimum of 22 credits, for all other provinces it is the successful completion of grade 11 with a varying number of credits depending on the province, and promotion to grade 12. Note that there is a provincial government tuition fee of $1124 per semester for Canadian non-residents of Québec. These fees are subject to change.

International ApplicantsSRAM does an evaluation of educational scholarity at an additional fee for applicants educated outside of Canada, which in most cases is accurate for purposes of admission to the college.

However, the evaluation from the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles is considered offi cial. Applicants educated outside Canada may contact the following Québec government offi ce for an offi cial evaluation of equivalent scholarity:

Note that neither evaluation is concerned with academic performance, or equivalent course content. Relevant transcripts and course descriptions should be submitted with the SRAM application for assessment by Vanier College personnel.

There is a provincial government tuition fee of approximately $5000-$7000 per semester for international students. These fees vary with the Program of study and are subject to change.

It is recommended that international applicants complete the application process by mid-February to enable SRAM to do the evaluation of scholarity. Accepted students will require a Québec Certifi cat d’acceptation and a Canada Study Permit, each of which takes 2 months to process. The Winter semester is open to international applicants only if they already possess these legal status documents.

All applicants applying from outside Canada whose mother tongue and language of instruction is not English must submit recent results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable score for this test is 80 Internet-based or 213 computer-based or 550 paper-based. If the paper-based test is done, then the Test of Written English (T.W.E.) is also recommended. A minimum score of 4.5 is expected. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) results are also accepted with a band score of 7.0 or better.

Advanced StandingApplicants who have attended other Cegeps are required to submit a cumulative transcript. What is CEGEP?Cegep is an acronym meaning Collège d’enseignement général et professionnel or College of General and Professional Education. CEGEP refers to the two fundamental components of the curriculum: the elements of the general education components common to all programs (English, French, Humanities, Physical Education, complementary courses) and the courses that are specific to each program.

What is special about Cegep?The Cegep system is unique to Québec. It acts as a bridge between high school and either university studies or employ-ment. Cegep is a time and a place where students can mature, learn the study habits necessary for university course work, and choose what to do with their future. Full-time Cegep students can study in a pre-university or a career program. Both lead to a Diplôme d’études collégiales (DEC), a Diploma of Collegial Studies, which is needed to enter a Québec university.

Why choose to attend Cegep?Cegep gives you time to: • grow and discover who you are • decide what you want to do with your life • try things you’ve never done before • make new friends • enjoy the unique social and intellectual

exchanges of college life

Cegep will teach you to learn on your own, while benefiting from the support and guidance of caring teachers. Cegep will also teach you to think critically and creatively and to know how to analyze a situation and make informed decisions and judgments – abilities that will serve you your entire life – personally, spiritually, and professionally.

What is a DEC (Diploma) program?A DEC program is a broad set of learning activities that consist of general education studies and studies in a particular area. All programs are structured according to a pre-arranged grid which is determined by the Ministry of Education. Québec Cegeps offer more than 20 Pre-university Programs, including double DECs; and over 100 Career Programs.

What is the difference between a Pre-university Program and a Career Program?Pre-university is a full-time, two-year, four-semester program leading to a Diploma. It is intended for students who plan to study at university upon graduation from Cegep.

A Career Diploma is a full-time, three-year, six-semester program leading to a Diploma in the field of studies. It is designed to prepare students for jobs in their career field upon graduation from Cegep or, if they so choose, to continue to university studies.

What is a Pre-university program?A four-semester Pre-university Program consists of general studies, complementary courses, and program courses. Students may then complete an undergraduate degree at a Québec university in only 3 years.

What is a Career program?The Career Programs are demanding six-semester courses of study that provide students with essential employability skills and training for immediate entry into the job market. However, career programs also prepare students for university studies and indeed, 50% of our graduates choose to forego immediate employment in favour of university studies.

Aren’t the Career Programs meant for“poor students”?No. No. No! In fact, some Career Programs are more challenging than Pre-university Programs.

Because the term “technology” is sometimes used interchan-geably with the word “career or professional”, many people misunderstand Cegep Career and Technical programs and confuse them with vocational training or trade school, which only takes place at the high school level.

In fact, Cegep Career Programs prepare students for a variety of specialized and lucrative careers. Many of these professions are accredited through national and provincial associations and permit graduates to use the term “technologist”, a term that indicates expertise in technological and technical design.

Why should I choose a three-year instead of a two-year program?The extra year is time well-spent because most Career Programs at Vanier involve internships with companies or institutions and a significant period of work in a professional setting. This practical real-life experience and the contacts students make can lead to summer jobs and facilitate finding permanent employment after graduation.

What are the advantages of a Career Program?• Excellent choice if you want to work right after

completing your Cegep studies.• It can provide you with the financial support

of a well-paying job while you attend university. • You acquire the skills you need to enter, stay in and

progress in the world of work. • You learn to communicate professionally, manage information,

use numbers, think and solve problems, and know how to work safely.

• You develop workplace skills and know how to carry out projects and tasks alone or in a group.

Can I attend university if I choose a Career Program?Yes, absolutely! As well, depending on which Career Program you have followed, which university you plan to attend, and what studies you want to pursue, you may receive university credit for some of your Cegep courses, thus reducing the time needed to obtain your Bachelor’s degree. Our Academic Advisors can help you prepare your qualifications should you wish to continue to university. One Québec university, ÉTS – École de technologie supérieure de l’Université du Québec, accepts only Career Program graduates into its Engineering programs.

What if I find my program is wrong for me?Cegep allows you to change programs. If you find that you are in the wrong program and want to change, Vanier advisors are there to help you with your course selection to ensure that diploma requirements are being met and to make the transition as smooth as possible. They can help you determine your

strengths and work out strategies for your new goals, including providing information on university entrance requirements.

At Vanier you are a name, not a number. Your concerns are our concerns and in addition to our Academic Advisors, Vanier counsellors offer personal and career counselling, vocational testing, and workshops on topics ranging from career planning to stress management.

What does Cegep cost?Public Cegeps are tuition-free for full-time students born in Québec or who can prove Québec residency. Students pay activ-ity, student association and registration fees of approximately $160 per semester. Textbooks and supplies must be purchased and can amount to $500 per semester. Depending on the Program, there may be other additional costs such as uniforms, supplies and equipment. Vanier makes arrangements for used textbook sales and customized course packs to reduce costs.

Is financial aid available?Québec has a well articulated system of financial aid to students. Vanier offers entrance scholarships to recent Québec high school graduates based on academic achievement. However, if you are coming from outside the province and require financial assistance, you must apply through your home province’s program of loans and bursaries.

How big are the classes?Depending on the course, class size average is from 35-40 students, but in some cases, may be as small as six. Science labs consist of 20 students who work in pairs at ten work stations. The smaller lab sizes allow teachers to get to know all their students and give them more individualized attention.

How is the academic year divided?There are two 15-week semesters during the academic year — Autumn and Winter — and an examination period for each semester. A Summer School of approximately eight weeks provides students with the opportunity to accelerate their studies or to catch up on a missing course at their own cost.

What kinds of courses make up a program?All pre-university and career programs at the Cegep level consist of General Education courses, and Program courses that give you a solid grounding in your chosen field of study.

What are General Education courses?No matter what program you choose, you are continuing your “general education” – that is, the disciplined development of those insights, skills and values that are important for your personal growth. For this reason, in addition to the specific courses that make up your program of study, all students are required to take General Education courses to complete their Diploma:

• 4 English courses• 3 Humanities courses• 2 French courses• 3 Physical Education courses• 2 complementary courses

Why are General Education courses important?The Québec Ministry of Education, Leisure and Sport (MELS) requires general education studies because these courses aim “to provide students with a common cultural core, to help them learn and develop generic skills … to prepare them for their roles as responsible members of society, and to enable them to share in the common cultural heritage.”

These goals are met in Cegep mainly through courses offered in Humanities, English, French, and Physical Education. These are the courses that form well-rounded graduates that employers and industry are looking for - graduates who know how to communicate, sell, relate, and work as part of a team.

DEC graduates are valued for their flexibility, creativity, articulateness, critical thinking, and for the broad skills they learn in the General Education courses.

Why study English, Humanities, French and Physical Education?Why take complementary courses?

• English and Humanities courses help students develop their basic skills of reading, thinking, writing and speaking, and initiate critical reflection on their lives as well as on society’s intellectual, artistic, moral, social and political values, which leads to a better understanding of the human condition.

My educa on, my academics, my concernsMy English: Is it good enough?

No matter what program a student chooses and no matter where that program leads after Cegep, English is important. Mastering reading, writing and speaking English is the foundation for success in all courses.

Vanier College wants its students to succeed and takes great care in assessing all new students and placing them in English courses that are appropriate to their skill level. In these classes students are at a similar level of English proficiency and come from similar backgrounds. This means that yes, you will feel comfortable in your class.

Developing good communication skills in English is one of the most valuable assets you will acquire. It is all the more important since students must write the Ministry’s English Exit Exam in order to receive the DEC. If you’re having difficulty with English, the English Department and The Learning Centre (TLC) will help you get the tools you need to succeed.

What can I do if my English is weak?Students whose English skills are judged to be too weak to allow acceptance at Vanier are guided in how to improve their English. Vanier provides a variety of courses for students who need to upgrade their language proficiency.

The Vanier Language School offers non-credit courses to individuals who wish to improve their language skills.

• The Academic Writing Skills course is specifically designed to help potential Vanier College students prepare for the English Admissions Test for entry into academic programs.

• The full-time, intensive English for Academic Purposes program is available to both international and local students who wish to improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

• The Academic Writing for Teens course is to help Secondary IV or V students who would like to make the transition to English Cegep.

Anglais sans problème! S’adapter et réussir en anglais au cégepEst-ce diffi cile de s’adapter à l’enseignement en anglais ?Moins qu’on pourrait le penser! Par contre, il est évident que le niveau de compétence en anglais est un facteur déterminant de la capacité d’adaptation d’un élève. Au Cégep Vanier nous avons mis à point Anglais sans problème! - un groupement de services pour soutenir les élèves dans leurs études et combler leurs faiblesses en anglais.

Voici quelques indices précurseurs de succ ès :• L’élève s’exprime couramment en anglais avec son entourage.• L’élève se trouve régulièrement en situation où l’on s’exprime

en anglais par l’intermédiaire de différents médias d’information (presse, radio, télévision, cinéma, etc.) et éprouve peu ou pas de problèmes de compréhension.

• L’élève aime lire en anglais.• L’élève est en anglais enrichi et obtient de bons résultats.• L’élève est nettement au-dessus de la moyenne en anglais régulier.

Est-ce que je peux rédiger mes travaux ou faire les examens en français ?Un élève dont la langue maternelle n’est pas l’anglais s’inscrira à un cégep anglophone parce qu’il veut, entre autres, améliorer ses compétences en anglais. Pour cette raison, le Collège exige habituellement que tous les élèves rédigent leurs travaux et leurs examens en anglais.

D’autre part, il ne faut pas oublier que, pour obtenir le diplôme d’études collégiales (DEC), l’élève devra réussir l’Épreuve ministérielle d’anglais.

Y a t-il un programme d’immersion ?Pas vraiment ! Les élèves devront suivre tous leurs cours en anglais dès la première session. Par contre, le premier cours d’anglais régulier des élèves sera déterminé par les résultats qu’ils auront obtenus à l’épreuve obligatoire de classement. Quels services offre-t-on aux francophones ?The Learning Centre (le Centre d’aide à l’apprentissage) s’est donné pour mission de favoriser l’apprentissage général en améliorant les compétences linguistiques des élèves non-anglophones et en offrant divers services et activités tel que : des ateliers d’écriture, de lecture et de méthodologie du travail, des trucs utiles pouvant servir à faire de meilleures présentations orales ou à prendre de meilleures notes de cours, des concours de rédaction, etc. Par ces activités, l’élève développe une plus grande confiance en ses capacités.

Vanier deliberately mixes the students in the general courses so that people from different programs have the chance to meet. Alliance Sport-Études

The Alliance Sport-Études program is designed to help elite student-athletes achieve their educational and athletic goals. Alliance Sport-Études students are able to maintain their high level of training and competition because they are allowed to attend Cegep on a reduced workload. Vanier is the only English language Cegep currently offering this program which is available in 22 Cegeps across the province. Students must be carded athletes or affiliated with one of the official Québec sports federations or ABC (Baseball) Canada or the Québec Junior Hockey League (LHJMQ).

An annual scholarship of $500 is awarded to the student at each Cegep who best exemplifies the Alliance Sport-Études goals: excellence in academics and sports. This award is spon-sored by the provincial Alliance Sport-Études network and Radio Canada. The recipient is chosen by Vanier College. In addition, there are 5 provincial awards of $500-$2000 awarded across the network. Training and development bursaries of $500 to $1200, sponsored by Réseau des Sports (RDS), are also available for students who attend special training camps and competition away from Montreal.

Student Development and Orientation Centre

One important area in the College that you will visit often is the Student Development and Orientation Centre (Student Services). Students know the staff members there are problem-solvers. Student Services makes every effort to ease your transition from high school to college. The Centre offers a host of services such as a housing registry, help in planning events on campus, leadership training, volunteer opportunities, peer-tutoring, financial aid information, the Vanier This Week bulletin, the Student Agenda, lockers, bus passes, access to College facilities, and special events as well as a full range of Orientation and Welcome Week activities.

Getting Involved

The Student Services team works closely with the Vanier College Students’ Association (VCSA), and can help you get started in organizing a student club. In the two or three years that you will be at Vanier, you will be spending plenty of time going to class, studying, and getting a great academic experience. You will also have many hours that won’t be “book time” and getting involved in student life outside the classroom is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

The VCSA is funded by your student fees ($25 per semester) and in addition to directing student clubs it organizes trips, special events around the college, movies and guest speakers. The VCSA welcomes your support and needs your participation. If you’re a full-time day-division student at Vanier, you are a full member of the VCSA and you can run for a representative or executive position on Council.

Vanier College has a very popular Universal Break ever Wednesday mid-day when no classes are scheduled anywhere on campus. You will appreciate U.B. because it’s an opportunity to relax, to meet and socialize with friends both on and off-campus, to attend the free Wednesday concert series put on by talented Music students, to see a free VCSA movie, to participate in or check out activities, presentations, or clubs, to sample all those yummy food fairs and bake sales; and it’s a chance for students working on class projects to meet and work together as a group. Vanier and the WorldThrough the International Education Office students may become involved in world issues. For example, special CIDA-funded projects such as Vanier Aids Action in Africa and Education for All have offered students the chance to go to Malawi and discover what they can do to alleviate the AIDS pandemic or the lack of universal access to education in Africa.

Elsewhere, certain programs such as Business Administration and MicroMedia combine studies and travel through the France-Vanier exchange. Other travel opportunities come from various departments such Modern Languages, Liberal Arts, Slavic Studies, Honours Science, and visits outside of Canada organized by the Architectural Technology Program.

The placeHoused in the historic Collège Basil-Moreau on a tree-shaded 20-acre campus, Vanier College has welcomed over 200,000 students since it was founded in 1970.

Vanier has constantly upgraded the older buildings that are the heart of the college, providing modern facilities while preserving the warmth and unique character of some of its century-old architecture. It also constructed a superbly equipped Sports Complex to provide facilities for physical education, athletic training and recreational sports, and a thoroughly modern five-story building to service several of the career programs.

PROGRAM GRID: Plan of courses by semester. This is unique for every program and profile.

STANDING AND ADVANCEMENT STANDARDS: Criteria applied each semester to determine if a student maintains eligibility to continue as a full time student in college, and/or to continue in the same program. Also refers to standards to be achieved before a student can enroll in the next semester of a program. These are unique for many programs.

EXCEPTIONS: Science and Music, Social Science and Music, and Modern Languages and Music, are all double DEC pre-university programs that require 6 semesters or three years of study.

LETTER OF INTENT (IF REQUESTED): Write a business letter addressed to the Program Coordinator explaining your interest in your program of choice, and detailing relevant interests, skills, and experiences. Work and volunteer history can be men-tioned. Finish with a sentence outlining your future study and /or career goals. This letter will be part of your SRAM application.

Pre-university programs are four semesters or two years in length. Commerce aims to enhance the understanding and appreciation of business activities as well as prepare students for university studies in Commerce or a related fi eld. Commerce includes compulsory mathema cs and business courses.

Commerce opens the same doors at the university level as the Social Science program but with added expertise in key areas of the world of business and finance.

In this option students learn basic business concepts, develop an extensive business vocabulary and analyze and evaluate the decision making process in various areas of business activity.

Students acquire a fundamental understanding of the key functions and the complex environment of businesses today. Teachers may use different methods of student evaluation. University studies in areas such as accounting, marketing, management, business administration, economics, finance, and other business oriented programs. Graduates of this program demonstrate exceedingly high academic standards that will stand them in good stead for any university application, and particularly for applications to university honours programs. Successful honours graduates will have their academic accomplishments recognized. This honours program is not open to new students. COMMERCE MAJOR IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

(A profile within the Social Science program)

The Commerce Major in International Business offers the same courses as the Commerce profile but the focus of each course is international. This profile is ideal for students interested in the effects of globalization and the role of business in globalization.

In this major, teaching methods are research-based. Hence teachers empha-size research into topics raised in Commerce classes. Current affairs are central, and teachers strongly encourage teamwork. Students learn about other cultures and the effect of culture on business leaders and business decisions. Students develop strong bonds because they are grouped together and they share a common orientation towards Social Science.

After successful completion of this profile, students receive a Vanier College Certificate, as well as the Diploma of Collegial Studies (DEC).

University studies with emphasis on International Affairs, in areas such as accounting, marketing, management, business administration, eco-nomics, finance, and other business oriented programs. COMMUNICATIONS: ART, MEDIA, THEATREThe Communications: Art, Media, Theatre program at Vanier is an option in CREATIVE ARTS, LITERATURE AND LANGUAGES. It is distinctive in that it offers a balance between studio and theory in four interrelated disciplines: studio arts; fi lm and media studies; photography; and theatre. As a result, students get a broadly based knowledge set which helps in acceptance to university programs requiring a por olio of crea ve and academic work. As well, in the Por olio Class, students build a por olio they can use for admission to certain university programs.

The program has exceptional facilities. They include a Mac-based Media lab for video editing and digital design as well as a theatre studio, fully equipped photo lab, cinema screening room, and painting, drawing and sculpture studios. The program area includes the B-305 Gallery in addition to display and exhibition spaces.

A DEC in Communications prepares you for university studies in areas such as art education, art history, art therapy, film studies, fine arts, communica-tion studies, film animation and production, graphic design, and journalism.

Throughout its rich history the liberal arts tradition has emphasized the acquisition of general knowledge and the development of rational thought and intellectual capacity.

This Honours program stresses the interrelationship of various disciplines, including art, literature, philosophy, politics, history and mathematics. It explores the common concepts and issues underlying the various branches of human knowledge. Competencies have been developed that encourage students to become successful learners, while also preparing them for a variety of university level programs.

The program is a small one where students and teachers form a community. Teachers commit themselves not only to their particular courses but also to the integration of their courses into the program as a whole. In addition, extra-curricular activities enhance the shared pursuit of cultural development. Fieldtrips, theatre and concert outings, museum and cultural visits in and around Montreal, as well as group dinners take place regularly.

MODERN LANGUAGESThe Modern Languages program at Vanier College is an

Do you imagine yourself working overseas, or for the municipal, provincial, or federal government? Or perhaps you see yourself working in interna onal law or business? Perhaps tourism is where you would like to be? Speaking more than one language and learning others enhances your career prospects, and broadens your personal horizons.

The Department of Modern Languages at Vanier College prepares students for university by offering the chance to become proficient in Italian, Spanish, German, Mandarin and/or Russian. Students may concentrate on as many as two or three foreign languages and take a total of eight courses chosen from these five languages.

The Modern Languages Program offers beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of instruction. Advanced and native speakers can be placed in appro-priate levels to suit their educational needs. In addition to learning modern languages, students will take six program courses and expand their cultural knowledge and learn about key notions of language and linguistics.

Vanier College’s Modern Languages students have the advantage of being part of a large and diversified college with extensive facilities and a wide choice of courses. They are also able to participate in a small, friendly program that provides individual attention for those who need it. The program facilitates the adjustment to Cegep by offering a faculty advisor or mentor to every entering student.

The Modern Languages Program offers students the possibility of exchange programs and trips abroad to such places as Russia and China.

MUSICAll Music programs emphasize the development of performance skills through private study, and participation in ensembles (small and large). Ensembles include the Vanier College Choirs, Concert Band, Big Band, as well as String, Guitar, Wind, Brass, Percussion, Jazz and Classical ensembles. Soloists and ensembles are featured in a series of weekly concerts as well as in occasional gala performances. Technology courses offered include: recording techniques, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) applica ons, and computer-integrated ear-training and theory programs.

During six semesters, students will receive all the required courses for both pre-university program Diplomas. This program has tradi onally been considered one of the most challenging and rewarding programs off ered at Vanier College.

What can I do when I graduate with two DECs in Science and Music?

Graduates of this program may go on to advanced future studies in areas such as biology, chemistry, dentistry, engineering, geology, mathematics, medicine, nutrition, optometry, physics and other science-oriented programs, plus commerce, finance, business and humanities and social science programs.

This is a three-year pre-university program for students with an ap tude in both Music and Social Science. Upon successful comple on of the program, students receive both a Social Science and a Music Diploma in Collegial Studies and are eligible to continue their university studies in either domain.

What can I do when I graduate with two DECs in Social Science and Music?

Social Science and Music graduates may study in areas such as anthropology, commerce, economics, sociology, geography, history, political science, psychology, religious studies, law, communications, journalism, education and social work.

As well, graduates of the Social Science and Music Double DEC may also pursue advanced studies in music therapy, music history, music theory, composition, performance, and music education.

SCIENCEAt Vanier College, we are proud of our rigorous approach to instruc on in Science. Over the years we have built a reputa on for excellence in Science studies. Our commitment to excellence extends to the size of our classes. The lab components of all science courses have a maximum of twenty students.

A DEC in Science is excellent preparation for many areas of university studies including fields like engineering, medicine or ecology but also for topics as diverse as finance and education. Once enrolled in Science at Vanier College, we strongly recommend that students consult with an Academic Advisor concerning the necessary prerequisites for university programs.

Vanier College offers a variety of options within our Science program. This allows students access to an enriched option like Honours Science. Or if they prefer, students may concentrate in particular fields with majors like Engineering Math and Physics or Bio-Medical Science. We also offer options, including Explorations/Pathways - Prerequisite profile, that allow students an opportunity to acquire missing program prerequisites (See page xx).

All Science programs lead to advanced future studies in science-oriented programs as well as areas such as commerce, finance, business, and humanities and social science programs.

HONOURS SCIENCEThis challenging program is for highly talented and motivated students with a keen interest in science. Honours Science students take all their first year mathematics and science courses as a group. During their second year they continue to take some science courses as a group, while also following their interests by selecting three science option courses. Content in Honours Science sections is integrated between subjects, and the course material is enriched using the time saved through the decreased need for review. A strong group dynamic built through participation in extra-curricular educational and social activities facilitates the making of friends and the formation of study groups, and consequently aids academic success.

Students interested in Honours Science should apply to Vanier’s Health Science 200.B0 or Pure and Applied Science 200.B0 programs. Applicants to either of these programs who have at least 80% in each of their Secondary V mathematics and science courses, as well as having a mathematics and science average of at least 85% will be invited to apply to Honours Science.

SOCIAL SCIENCEThe discipline of Social Science involves the study and research of human behavior. The resulting data is evaluated in an effort to understand that behavior. Students acquire an understanding of society, research skills, verbal and written communication skills, computer skills as well as group work experience. All of this provides a solid background for future endeavors at the university level.

Social Science is the largest program at Vanier College. The size of the program means that we are able to offer a broad range of programs, majors and courses that address many areas of interest within the general discipline of Social Science. These areas include psychology, commerce, environment issues, law and international development. It is also a very active program organizing and sponsoring important events like the annual Social Science Festival as well as guest lecturers and speakers throughout the year. Students also have the possibility of trips and exchanges.

HONOURS SOCIAL SCIENCE AND COMMERCEGraduates of this program demonstrate exceedingly high academic standards that will stand them in good stead for any university application, and particularly for applications to university honours programs. Successful honours graduates will have their academic accomplishments recognized. This honours program is not open to new students. SOCIAL SCIENCE MAJORSThese Majors are part of the Social Science program. They draw upon our extensive course listings from various disciplines and are grouped thematically to appeal to specific interests.

Majors students take part in special activities and lectures, and are grouped in Social Science courses throughout their career at Vanier. Students get to work on topics they’re interested in. Students in a Social Science Major are part of a smaller group and this makes it easier to make friends. When students stay together and are focused they also tend to do better in their studies.

A series of outings, visits, lectures and social gatherings foster a sense of belonging, of friendship and exchange. It creates an atmosphere of human proportions.

Vanier College off ers the fi rst and only College level Black Studies Program in Canada. Using a multidisciplinary approach, students in this major explore varied aspects of the Black experience.

Within the course of this major students investigate and examine issues of race, racism, and ethnicity along with a wide array of other important topics such as the history of Africa, colonialism and the construction of identity. Students also look at the Black experience in contemporary Canada, and delve into Black literature in both French and English.

This major provides students with the tools, concepts and knowledge they need to understand, reflect on and make sense of the past and current reality of Black lives in Canada and those of the African Diaspora. Students who complete a Major in Interna onal Studies will have developed knowledge and critical thinking about international issues in Social Science.

This Major prepares students for university studies in any Social Science discipline but is especially designed for students interested in pursuing university studies in International Development, Humanitarian Law or Human Rights or students who would like eventually to work in settings such as the United Nations or other international profit and non-profit organizations.

A student who graduates with a Major in International Studies will have a better understanding and appreciation for how cultures, religions and economies intersect and interact, how racist, sexist and ethnocentric prejudices are constructed, and how humanity adapts to and also threatens the many varied but connected and shared physical environments around the world.

There is the possibility for students to take part in a study trip after their third semester. This trip is usually in a Central American country.

CAREER PROGRAMS

Students sometimes wonder if studying in a trade school at the high school level would not be better than going to Cegep for three years. But Cegep Career Programs and trade schools are very different. The prospects for advancement and career choices for trade school graduates are limited, whereas, Career Program graduates are not only on the fast track for salary raises and advancement through a company, but are prepared for university if they choose to pursue their studies further.

Because of the General Education courses of Cegep studies, Career Program graduates are able to communicate professionally, manage information, write up reports, use numbers, think and solve problems, and they know how to work on teams to carry out projects and tasks. Not only are they prepared for careers as technologists and profes-sionals, but also for sales, management, and administration.

Graduates can expect to start at salaries well above the minimum. Starting wages are normally in the $18 to $30 per hour range depending on the profession. Technologists are, of course on a career path and can expect graduated increases in salary as they acquire experience, as well as the possibility of the benefits of full-time employment such as paid vacations, training and professional development, commissions, company medical plans and pension plans.

Graduates from the Career Programs are highly sought-after by compa-nies. There are jobs out there that need to be filled and companies are having difficulty finding qualified personnel. To get an overview of the prospects of various programs of study and the career outlook for graduates from the Career Programs take a look at Le Palmarès des carrières 2010, published by Septembre éditeur. It’s a survey of

the 150 best jobs in Québec, the programs of study they require, starting salaries and time spent looking for that first job. In the 2010 survey, twelve of Vanier’s Career Programs led to nominated jobs (Palmarès Nominee 2010), and eight of those led to winning jobs (Palmarès Lauréat – Winner 2010).

As an example of the need for graduates from the Career Programs, take a look at The Gazette, Working Section, on Saturday, June 14, 2008, which surveys jobs available in Computer Science Technology. Another area with too few graduates, is Nursing. According to the Québec Order of Nurses, the province will face a shortage of 7,300 nurses in few years and 23,000 nurses in 15 years!

Students interested in advanced studies at the university level, instead of immediate employment upon graduation, should contact Vanier’s Academic Advising staff during their first semester to be sure they acquire the appropriate prerequisite courses for the university program that interest them. Advisors also know about university programs that offer equivalencies, advanced standing and credits for some Career Program courses, which might reduce the time needed to obtain a Bachelor’s degree. At Vanier, 50% of Career Program graduates continue on to university after Cegep.

Career Programs are normally six semesters or three years in length. There are some exceptions: the Extended Nursing Program can be completed in eight semesters or four years; and some programs off er a fast track, usually for students who have already completed a DEC or an AEC. Career Programs provide graduates with workplace skills and fundamental knowledge to permit them to practice their profession upon graduation.

SALARIES FOR CAREER PROGRAM GRADUATESGraduates of Career Programs find employment in their field through contract, part-time work or permanent positions. Graduates can expect to start at salaries above minimum wage, with benefits and training fitting professional positions. Usually it takes two years to learn the “soft skills” needed in a profession. After the preliminary period, depending on the profession, the union or collective agreement situation, and the opportunities, graduates can expect their salaries to increase, sometimes significantly. In this dynamic program, the teaching of theory is accompanied by hands-on experience such as reading X-Rays, and using animal skeletons to locate appropriate puncture sites and demonstrate correct techniques, learn minor surgery proce-dures and understand animal biology, physiology and anatomy. There are mandatory clinical and research fieldwork/internship placements as part of the program.

By the time they graduate, Vanier Animal Health Technicians are team players who are flexible, mature, motivated and highly competent. This program is accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) and the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC).

Animal Health Technicians (Technologists) have been recently recognized by the authorities to perform specific procedures that were historically exclusively the domain of veterinarians. Only persons having a recognized AHT degree are allowed to perform these new tasks.

Successful students are:• enthusiastic about working with animals and people• demonstrate physical dexterity• comfortable in a very hands-on environment

It is suggested that people with animal allergies consider this condition in choosing this area of study.

The field of animal health care needs qualified, dedicated professionals who enjoy working with both animals and people. Providing quality health care for animals is complex. In addition to mastering technology and procedures, animal health technicians must be adept in the management and care of animals, laboratory facilities and be able to take on an administrative role in the office. The ability to communicate and interact with clients is vital.

This profession is a dynamic field where successful graduates combine hands-on technical knowledge of buildings and construction techniques with an aesthetic awareness of architectural design.

Job placement for our graduates is exceptional. New buildings are always being constructed and existing structures are constantly being renovated. This creates a need for archi-tectural technologists to work with contractors, engineers, designers, architects and other industry professionals. Possessing technical skills, knowing how buildings fit together and how the construction industry operates are key elements in this industry.

Students profit from small classes, peer tutoring, state-of-the-art equipment and individual teacher attention. Our teachers are practicing architects and engineers who bring that expertise to the classroom. Upon completion of the program graduates understand the science and materials of construction and know how to combine them with the techniques of design and architecture.

All students in this program participate in a two-week or longer internship where they work in the offices of architects, contrac-tors, construction firms or other related companies to get a realistic view of the profession. These internships often lead directly to job offers.

As part of their studies, students take field trips to architec-turally interesting locations in and around Montreal such as innovative buildings, green buildings, construction sites, architectural landmarks, and historical Old Montreal. Past trips outside the country have included trips to Chicago, New Mexico, and New Orleans. Prominent guest speakers keep the program connected to contemporary trends in building design and techniques.

Architectural technologists find employment as contractors, project managers, interior designers, building inspectors, building materials sales representatives, specification writers, and related jobs in architects’ offices, institutions, corporations or governmental departments involved in the planning and construction of buildings. Many are self-employed and own their own construction or design companies.

Graduates of this program are qualified to become members of L’ordre des technologues professionnels du Québec (OTPQ) that gives them professional recognition and certain advantages.

According to Job Futures Quebec, “Given the anticipated growth in construction and the demand for architectural services, the number of architectural technologists should increase significantly in the next few years. It should be noted, however, that a very large percentage of these graduates, i.e., from 30% to 40%, do not enter the labour market, but prefer to pursue a university education in all types of disciplines, including architecture and civil engineering.”

This program gives students the exper se necessary to design heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigera on (HVAC&R) systems in modern buildings.

Graduates are able to design and maintain those systems as well as the necessary control mechanisms, in order to have healthy, comfortable environments in all types of buildings. Students apply theory and principles of engineering to develop, operate and test the electrical, lighting, plumbing, and fire protection systems along with the HVAC&R operations of any modern building.

Job placement possibilities are excellent for graduates. Students have a variety of career choices in manufacturing, contracting, building operations and in the design of commercial, institutional and industrial building systems.

Graduates of this program have significant advantages. The General Studies component of the program opens the possibility of continuing on to university. This option is taken by approximately 20% of graduates. In addition, the General Studies component teaches students superior communication skills that can open further possibilities in areas like admin-istration or sales. In any case, graduates earn very competitive salaries with good opportunities for advancement.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATIONVanier College offers two options within Business Administration: ACCOUNTING AND MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY 410.B0 and BUSINESS MANAGEMENT (MARKETING) 410.D0.

Both options share a common curriculum in the first three semesters emphasizing basic business and computer skills. The final three semesters permit specialization in accounting or marketing. In both options, students are introduced to major areas of concern in the business world. These include accounting, finance, marketing, and human resource management. Both options offer a combination of the practical as well as the theoretical, in order to provide the skills needed to secure entry-level management positions in the business world. There is a mandatory internship placement with the opportunity of international (France) fieldwork.

The Computer Science Technology program includes courses in programming languages, databases, graphical interface design and computer networking. Students learn to develop business websites (e-commerce) and to develop applications (apps) for mobile devices. Included also are English courses, French courses, as well as courses in the humanities, math-ematics, business administration, psychology and physical education. Students in their last semester participate in an extensive 45-day internship or “stage” at a variety of companies of all sizes. Employers regard all aspects of this training as being important for future employees.

Upon graduation, a significant number of students are offered employment with these same companies. As well, students who decide to pursue university studies often come to an arrange-ment with these companies for part-time employment while they continue their higher education.

This career program is open to qualified students gradua ng from high school, mature students returning to studies, and to people who are changing their field of study.

Computers are used almost everywhere today, in businesses, at home and on the Internet. The computer is a powerful tool for storing and processing information. However, it is only brought to usefulness and apparent life by a program. A computer program is a carefully thought out, step-by-step, set of instruc ons prepared by a programmer. Preparation of programs requires analysis, perseverance, and creativity. It is fun as well. It usually requires teamwork and knowledge in areas other than computers.

Computer Science Technology is a three-year career program that prepares you to work in business, industry and the public sector as a software developer for websites, databases, mobile devices and general business applications. You may also work as a technical support specialist or a network admin-istrator. Computer systems today are more and more complex. Thorough preparation is needed to perform well at jobs in this field.

Computerized Systems Technology is unique in that it combines two fields of study: electronics and computers. Together these areas offer a complete technical perspec ve of the computer environment.

The understanding of electronic circuitry is enriched with in-depth knowledge of components such as microprocessors, micro-controllers and programmable logic devices, as well as computer networks.

Digital technology is used every day, in everything from cars to microwaves. There are continuous advances in electronic devices such as Netbooks and laptops, PDAs, DVD players,

digital televisions, and digital theatre systems. These are a few of the products that could not have been developed without the assistance of a Computerized Systems technologist who is involved in the design, analysis, implementation and application of computers and digital systems.

An exciting part of this program is the internship where students spend five weeks training in companies specialized in the design of flight simulators, telecommunications systems, computer networks and computer components.

Vanier College is the only English Cegep in the Montreal area that offers a 3-year Computerized Systems Technology program.

The two-year Fast Track Program is available for applicants who have already completed a DEC. Similar advanced standing is possible for those who have already completed an AEC in Early Childhood Care.

Interest in the childcare profession is growing rapidly, with high demand for competent, professional educators. The number of children being cared for in Nursery Schools, community pre-schools, and school age programs as well as CPEs (Centres de la Petite Enfance) has soared. Job opportunities are excellent.

Our facilities include new labs, cutting-edge equipment in environmental monitoring, and a new controlled environment chamber. This equipment makes experiments in botany and ecology possible. Most third year training in resource man-agement and environmental and pollution studies, takes place at the Field Station. The Field Station, unique within the Cegep system, is located in the Laurentians. It includes a laboratory, fish culture facility and residence. The local surroundings provide access to many different ecosystems.

The program can offer you a 5 to 6 week internship session in the field or laboratory. This session often leads to employment opportunities, either part time or longer term. As a student in this program you will be part of a small, tightly focused group with a powerful dynamic.

Few other careers offer the opportunity to touch lives, to promote health, prevent disease, help people cope with illness, and to comfort and provide care on a daily basis. In Semester 2, students begin a series of guided-internship scenarios in a variety of settings. These include acute, long-term or rehabilitation hospitals, or ambulatory care units.

The Vanier Nursing Program, designed for both men and women, provides the foundation to practice nursing immediately upon graduation or alternatively, to go on to the Integrated Nursing Program at McGill University. This option leads to a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing after two years. Nursing graduates develop strong problem solving skills, aptitude in the biological and social sciences, maturity and a sense of responsibility, plus the ability to collaborate with others.

Vanier College offers the Extended Nursing Program option for those who wish to extend the regular 3-year Nursing Program to four years.

Digital Technology has revolutionized communications and the training for people who create documents in the business world. Graduates of this program are competent in three main areas: Business Communica ons, Print Design, and Web Design. Students also take courses in Advertising, Psychology and French.

Graduates acquire the skills necessary to create digital illus-tration, edit digital photos, publish websites, and lay out documents. In the Business Communications courses students learn to communicate effectively in both written and oral English and French. They produce a variety of documents including reports, manuals, spreadsheets, charts and internal publications.

In Print Design students learn principles of design, digital editing, graphic creation, and page layout. They produce brochures, forms, visual identities, training manuals, adver-tisements, newsletters, posters, and promotional documents.

This option includes the study of musical instruments, music technology, and courses in commercial, jazz, and studio music. There is also instruc on in writing, arranging and performing contemporary music.

There are far too many Canadians suffering from breathing problems associated with lung problems, heart attacks, accidents, premature births, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer or AIDS. The college collaborates with local hospitals offering Extern-ship programs, potentially providing summer employment for Respiratory and Anaesthesia therapists in training.

What can I do after I graduate with a DEC in Respiratory and Anaesthesia Technology?

Most respiratory and anesthesia therapists work in hospitals but an increasing number of therapists are now working in skilled nursing facilities, physicians’ offices, home health agencies, and specialized and private care hospitals. Many also work in the air ambulance service which offers international opportunities for travel and work. According to the Ordre des inhalothérapeutes du Québec about half of graduates work as general respiratory therapists, one third work as anesthesia therapists and the remainder are in the growing field of home care.

The career path also leads to sales of medical equipment, management and college instructors. DEC graduates enjoy one of the best labour market situations of all career program graduates. The number of graduates is insufficient to meet the demand and will remain so for some time to come.

Job prospects in this occupation are good. This is due mostly to a sharp increase in the number of workers in these professions, which can be attributed to a rise in respiratory diseases, especially among seniors, as well as the development of out-patient care. The aging population, coupled with government health priorities, should cause employment prospects in this occupation to remain good in the coming years.

The Special Care Counselling Program leads to a rewarding career path that offers students the chance to work with people who have physical, mental, intellectual, neurological, emotional and behavioural issues.

The SCC program provides people-oriented students with the professional skills necessary to develop therapeutic relationships and give support to a broad range of people of all ages who have special needs. Students are trained to assess, develop, implement and evaluate goal- directed clinical inter-ventions designed to enhance a person’s quality of life.

Students of the Special Care Counselling program participate in three separate supervised fieldwork placements where they can put into practice the skills they learn in course work.

The role of the Special Care Counsellor is continually growing and expanding. In the 3-year SCC program students acquire the combination of theoretical and practical knowledge needed to both work in this exciting and constantly evolving helping profession, or to continue their studies at the University level if they choose to do so.

SCC graduates are also eligible for advance standing or can receive course equivalencies in selected university programs.

Given that Special Care Counsellors work with families, schools, cultural communities and a team of multi-disciplinary profes-sionals, students who become SCCs must be compassionate, creative, sensitive, patient, and observant individuals who have a strong passion for helping others.

Applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English, may be required to demonstrate adequate English language profi ciency for performance in the English-language milieu of Vanier College. Our Learning Centre staff administers the English profi ciency tests.

Out-Of-Province ApplicantsIn all cases the minimum requirement for Cegep is the equivalent of Secondary V scholarity. While the equivalent level of scholarity for Ontario students is a minimum of 22 credits, for all other provinces it is the successful completion of grade 11 with a varying number of credits depending on the province, and promotion to grade 12. Note that there is a provincial government tuition fee of $1124 per semester for Canadian non-residents of Québec. These fees are subject to change.

International ApplicantsSRAM does an evaluation of educational scholarity at an additional fee for applicants educated outside of Canada, which in most cases is accurate for purposes of admission to the college.

However, the evaluation from the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles is considered offi cial. Applicants educated outside Canada may contact the following Québec government offi ce for an offi cial evaluation of equivalent scholarity:

Note that neither evaluation is concerned with academic performance, or equivalent course content. Relevant transcripts and course descriptions should be submitted with the SRAM application for assessment by Vanier College personnel.

There is a provincial government tuition fee of approximately $5000-$7000 per semester for international students. These fees vary with the Program of study and are subject to change.

It is recommended that international applicants complete the application process by mid-February to enable SRAM to do the evaluation of scholarity. Accepted students will require a Québec Certifi cat d’acceptation and a Canada Study Permit, each of which takes 2 months to process. The Winter semester is open to international applicants only if they already possess these legal status documents.

All applicants applying from outside Canada whose mother tongue and language of instruction is not English must submit recent results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable score for this test is 80 Internet-based or 213 computer-based or 550 paper-based. If the paper-based test is done, then the Test of Written English (T.W.E.) is also recommended. A minimum score of 4.5 is expected. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) results are also accepted with a band score of 7.0 or better.

International candidates may choose to study English at the Language School and, after reaching the advanced level, write the Vanier College Admissions Test. Contact [email protected] for details.

Advanced StandingApplicants who have attended other Cegeps are required to submit a cumulative transcript. Acquired credits may be recognized between Cegeps and may be used to fulfi ll diploma requirements. Students who have attended any other post-secondary institution, such as a university, may be eligible for equivalences on a course-by-course basis (a minimal fee is applied). In all cases, applicants with advanced standing are evaluated for admission on their overall academic record and the competitiveness of the program(s) to which they are applying.

Alliance Sport-ÉtudesÉlite athlete applicants must apply to both Alliance Sport-Études www.alliancesportetudes.ca and Vanier College through SRAM http://sram.omnivox.ca. Students must meet the Admissions criteria for both Alliance Sport-Études and Vanier College. Please consult the Alliance Sport-Études website for their application process, application deadlines and fees. Applicants must apply to Vanier College through SRAM and meet the deadline of before November 1 for the Winter semester and March 1 for the Autumn semester.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Vanier College admits as many qualifi ed students as possible to the program of their choice. Every program, particularly in the Career (Technology) sector, has a limited number of places. When making admissions decisions for each program, the quality of applicants, the number of applicants and the number of places available, are considered. Acceptances are based primarily on academic performance and English profi ciency. In some cases, other criteria such as an interview, a letter of intent and/or an audition are also used in the evaluation process. If necessary, priority is given to graduating year students from the Québec secondary school system (high school).

Some programs require specifi c prerequisite courses and/or an audition or and interview and evaluation tests in addition to the Québec Secondary School Diploma and Cegep entrance requirements. Please check the Admission Requirements carefully for your program of choice.

Vanier College is affi liated with le Service Régional d’Admission du Montréal (or SRAM) which serves as a clearinghouse for the processing of applications. Applications are submitted through SRAM on-line at http://sram.omnivox.ca. Any requested documentation must be submitted directly to SRAM. The on-line application system is well designed with easy to follow instructions.

All required documents must be forwarded to SRAM by the advertised deadline. SRAM will not process incomplete applications.

There is a non-refundable application fee of $35.00, (payable to SRAM). International applicants pay a non-refundable fee of $80.00, (payable to SRAM).

Getting to Vanier from nearby Metro stations Access to Vanier College is easy from Côte-Vertu and Du Collège Orange Line Metro stations that are also the terminals for several bus routes. Both stations are within walking distance of Vanier College. From Côte-Vertu station walk east on Côte-Vertu then south on avenue Sainte-Croix to Vanier College (821, avenue Sainte-Croix). From Du Collège station walk north on Décarie then east on De l’Église to Vanier College (821, avenue Sainte-Croix).

From DOWNTOWN Take the Metro to Côte-Vertu or Du Collège Metro station then walk to Vanier Collège. Also the 16, 17, 121, and 171 bus routes that service Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Mont-Royal, and Hampstead provide direct access to Vanier College.

From the WEST ISLANDMost bus routes from the Fairview terminal have the Côte-Vertu or Du Collège Metro stations as the fi nal terminal. These are the 202, 215, 225 regular buses and the 214, 216, and 470 express bus routes.

From LAVAL and the NORTHERN FRINGE From the Deux-Montagnes commuter train line, get off at Montpellier and take the 121 or 171 bus to avenue Sainte-Croix and Côte-Vertu. Get off at avenue Sainte-Croix then walk south to Vanier College.

From the Saint-Jérôme commuter train line, get off at Bois-de-Boulogne and take the 171 bus route on Henri-Bourassa, which goes to avenue Sainte-Croix and Côte-Vertu. Get off at avenue Sainte-Croix then walk south to Vanier College.

Laval residents can take the Express 902 bus to the Côte-Vertu terminal then walk to Vanier College, or take either the 144 bus route from Sainte-Dorothée to the Côte-Vertu terminal or the 151 bus route from Sainte-Rose to the Côte-Vertu terminal then walk to Vanier College. They can also take the Metro from Laval and travel either to the Sauvé Metro station then take the 121 bus route or to the Henri-Bourassa Metro then take the 171 bus route to avenue Sainte-Croix and Côte-Vertu. Get off at avenue Sainte-Croix then walk south to Vanier College.

From LONGUEUIL and the SOUTHERN FRINGE Take the Metro from Longueuil to Berri-UQAM then change to the Orange Metro line (direction Côte-Vertu) and get off at Du Collège or Côte-Vertu station and walk to Vanier College. For bus lines and commuter trains that have terminals at the Bonaventure or Vendôme Metro stations, take the Orange Metro line (direction Côte-Vertu) to Du Collège or Côte-Vertu station then walk to Vanier College.

From Vaudreuil take the Express Vaudreuil 40 bus route to the Côte-Vertu terminal then walk to Vanier College.

From the EAST For residents of the eastern area of the Island of Montreal, take the Metro to Côte-Vertu station then walk to Vanier College.

For residents close to boulevard Crémazie take the 460 bus to the Du Collège terminal then walk to Vanier College.
