1 Shamona Creek Home and School Association Meeting Minutes April 5, 2016 (draft for approval at the next General Meeting) Meeting started at 9:30 AM. There were 10 people in attendance: Norma Jean Welsh, Kathryn Gute, Gina Thelander, Melissa Bell, Maria Dennin, Tara Haarlander, Jen Faust, Betsy Wright, Elizabeth Kazanjian, Valentine Schwartz. President’s Report : Kathryn Gute ([email protected] ) Scholarship applications from the three high schools will be due soon. We earned $200 from the Sport Clips fundraiser. Board of Directors Nominees: 1. President – Maria Dennin 2. Vice President of Fundraising – Megan Suhosky 3. Vice President – Jen Faust 4. Trasurer – Ann Durkin 5. Secretary – Melissa Bell Many Committee Chairperson positions will be open. Melissa Bell will continue doing the school sign. Tara Haarlander and Kathleen Nine-Scott will do Picture Day. The new trampoline park in Downingtown, Urban Air, may be a prospective fundraiser for next year. Guest Speaker : Master Jim Saemann, Family Martial Arts, Downingtown Take the time to educate your children about sexual predators and/or pedophiles. Be aware of special attention/actions others are paying toward your child. Take an active role in protecting your child. Approximately 1 in 20 men and 1 in 3,000 women are pedophiles. The best first steps if you suspect someone: 1. Check the Megan Law website to see who lives nearby. 2. Confront them. 3. Ask others about that person. Principal’s Report : Norma Jean Welsh, ([email protected]) Kindergarten introductory session for incoming students was held yesterday. PSSA’s start next week in grades 3-5. Many activities to look forward to in the next two months: Art Show, Field Day, Iron Kid, Triathlon, Spring Fair, and field trips. Vice President’s Report : Kathryn Gute, President ([email protected]) Joint Home and School Update: 1. February – Gina Thelander o Jonathan Blow, Technology Integration Coordinator, explained that in 2017, 9th and 10th graders will have a 1:1 laptop to child ratio. o Commonsensemedia.org is a great website to see what kids are doing on their devices and what apps they are using. The district is using this with the librarians at the elementary level. o The district is looking to move to on line text books in the future. o Dr. Rob Reed was announced as new Assistant Superintendent. 2. March – Maria Dennin o JHSA is encouraging everyone to get involved in committees especially Curriculum and Wellness.

Shamona Creek Home and School Association

Meeting Minutes April 5, 2016

Treasurer’s Report: Kathryn Gute, President ([email protected])

• We are doing well with our budget. • Money is still available. • Teachers need to spend their $500 homeroom money that is budgeted. • Grant Requests:

1. Mrs. Benner – 2nd Grade o $170.00 for a case of 9x12 dry erase boards to be used by the entire 2nd grade class. o Kathryn Gute approved the motion, Gina Thelander seconded it.

2. Lisa Conway – Office Staff o $800.00 to spruce up the office. o Maria Dennin approved the motion, Melissa Bell seconded it.

3. Mrs. Welsh – Phys Ed. o $3823.02 for a Gaga Pit made of composite materials. $500 from the Mascot Madness

competition will be put towards it as well. • Mrs. Welsh felt the assembly program was not like we would want or hope it to be. We need to ramp up for next

year now, focusing on three assemblies. She would like SCHSA to split the cost of $550 for the entertainment for the Back to School Nights in August.

Secretary’s Report: Gina Thelander ([email protected])

• Motioned to approve the minutes from the February 2, 2016 General Meeting. Kathryn Gute approved them, Maria Dennin seconded them.

• Reminder for committee heads to update their current committee descriptions for the Committee Binder – due by May meeting.

Committee Reports:

• Spring Fair: Maria Dennin ([email protected]) 1. There will be pizza, hoagies, and Indian food – all pre-ordered. 2. A face painter was hired. 3. We will have a photo booth, baseball pitch back, and some new games. 4. Each classroom will be responsible for scheduling volunteers for one game.

• Yearbook: Maria Dennin ([email protected])

1. 359 have already been sold. 2. We pre-ordered 425.

• 5th Grade Service Project: Maria Dennin ([email protected])

1. She will contact teachers for their ideas. 2. Name the Drop Off Loop will take place again.

• Box Tops: Melissa Bell ([email protected])

1. Competition was great. 2. Last year’s competition brought in 4985 compared to 7462 of this year.

• Retailer Rebates: Melissa Bell ([email protected])

1. Target rebates end this year. We received a $3500.00 check in January. 2. We received a $663.00 check from Giant so far this year.

• 5th Grade Party: Kathryn Gute ([email protected])

1. Party is scheduled for June 3rd with a rain date of June 6th. 2. Committees are meeting at Pennypacker on Thursday.

Old/New Business:

• Maria Dennin is checking into updating playground equipment. • Cradles to Crayons community service clothes drive will begin next week. • Mrs. Welsh was contacted by the Director of CDC asking us to collect gently used backpacks at the end of the

school year. • Kathryn Gute was contacted by Boosterthon. The event will be voted on at the next meeting.
