La festa internazionale della donna ha compiuto nel 2009 il suo primo centenario negli Stati

Uniti, in alcuni paesi europei e’ presente dal 1911 e in Italia decisamente piu’ tardi nel 1922, ora viene celebrata in quasi tutto il mondo. Tuttavia, ogni anno la stessa domanda: ma perché festeggiamo? Cosa c’e’ da festeggiare se le sue origini, qualunque esse siano, risalgono a storie di rivendicazioni, fame e poverta’? La memoria storica

infatti si e’ persa nel tempo e diverse teorie si sono sovrapposte creando non poca confusione sulla nascita

dell’evento: l’incendio della fabbrica di Triangle a New York, dove il 25 marzo 1911 persero la vita più di 140 operaie, lo sciopero di migliaia di camiciaie newyorkesi che nel 1908 avevano rivendicato migliori condizioni di lavoro e, per finire, secondo alcuni la data della Festa della Donna è addirittura collegata alla Rivoluzione Russa quando nel 1917 le donne russe organizzarono uno sciopero per ottenere il pane e la pace. Fatto sta che questo evento ricorre l'8 marzo di ogni anno per ricordare sia le conquiste sociali, economiche e politiche, rivendicazioni salariali, diritto di voto sia le discriminazioni e le violenze di cui le donne sono state e sono ancora oggetto in quasi tutte le parti del mondo. Si festeggia ma da qualche anno e’ nata la consapevolezza che al divertimento e spogliarelli maschili vari dobbiamo

affiancare la riflessione trasformando l’evento in occasione di analisi e confronto per capire la donna di ieri, cosa è oggi e cosa ancora c’è da fare nel lungo percorso per darle un ruolo ed una considerazione che ancora non sono stati raggiunti: quindi via libera a mostre, convegni con personaggi che offrono idee e cerimonie pubbliche che quest’anno, almeno in Italia, sono state limitate a causa dell’emergenza sanitaria, ad esempio, la cerimonia dell'8 Marzo al Quirinale non ha avuto luogo e stessa sorte sara’ riservata al Concerto alla Cappella Paolina del 15 marzo. ll simbolo per eccellenza? La mimosa la cui fioritura avviene proprio nei primi giorni di marzo. La Giornata Internazionale della Donna è festa nazionale in numerosi Paesi ma ovunque esiste l’usanza di renderle omaggio con fiori o regali. In alcuni Paesi poi, la Giornata Internazionale della Donna rappresenta anche la Festa della Mamma. Un giro del mondo, quindi, rigorosamente in rosa anche dove, nonostante siano stati raggiunti numerosi traguardi, esistono ancora enormi disparità sessiste: bassi livelli di istruzione, scarsità di cure sanitarie e diffusa violenza. L’8 marzo e’ diventato così l’occasione per festeggiare le battaglie vinte e ricordare quelle ancora da combattere. Accanto alle donne emancipate che sono abituate ad uscire e non hanno bisogno di un pretesto per andare a divertirsi ve ne sono altre che aspettano solo questa occasione per evadere da marito e figli “oggi è la nostra festa? Godiamocela fino in fondo”. Le trovi in fila, per entrare in un locale, con tacco 12, tubino e pochette. E' la festa dell'emancipazione, della vittoria del diritto sulla discriminazione, delle conquiste politiche e sociali sulla violenza: una strada ancora lunga da percorrere. In questo contesto vogliamo ricordare le donne che hanno cambiato il mondo, donne che con la loro forza e determinazione hanno affermato il valore del cosiddetto sesso debole: tre per tutte, Madre Teresa di Calcutta, Marie Curie e Maria Montessori. Poi ci sono le donne che in passato hanno avuto un ruolo determinante nel cammino dell’immigrazione, nel viaggio di tanti nostri connazionali con la speranza di una esistenza migliore e tra queste (chiedo scusa per la nota personale, annovero la mia mamma). Si cerca di far conoscere tutto questo alle nuove generazioni nelle scuole o invitando i giovanissimi a molti eventi collaterali come sta facendo da qualche anno Terre des Hommes (organizzazione internazionale umanitaria per i diritti dei ragazzi presente in molti Paesi tra cui il Canada e l’Italia) che proprio nello stivale, in occasione della Giornata Internazionale della Donna, ha dato voce ai millennials dei club Rotaract (che riuniscono i giovani tra i 18 e 30 anni aderenti al Rotary International) rendendo noti i dati di un’indagine svolta nel 2019 che ha messo a confronto le generazioni sulle principali tematiche legate alla questione. Parità di genere? È un traguardo ancora molto lontano in Italia per 6 giovani su 10 e tra le forme di discriminazione peggiori che subiscono le donne hanno indicato le molestie sessuali seguite dal mancato riconoscimento delle capacità delle donne e dalla discriminazione economica. Una presa di coscienza emerge dal 16% dei ragazzi che indica il lavoro domestico non retribuito come un'importante discriminazione femminile. Tornando ai luoghi in cui le donne corrono maggiormente il rischio di subire discriminazioni - dopo il posto di lavoro, il web e la politica i millennials italiani hanno indicato il mondo dello spettacolo. Ma ecco la sorpresa: secondo il 46% dei ragazzi e il 26% delle ragazze le donne dovrebbero anteporre il proprio ruolo di madre alla carriera professionale. Infine guardando a come la donna viene raccontata dai media e dalla pubblicità emerge l'immagine di una donna oggetto per cui domina l'idea secondo cui in tv il successo femminile sia legato prevalentemente alla bellezza fisica.

La Comunità Italiana a Kelowna è viva e vibrante! Ne sono testimonianza le

tantissime iniziative messe in campo dai due Club italiani che convivono sul territorio per mantenere vive le tradizioni e celebrare il senso di appartenenza alla cultura italiana. Ho intervistato per voi il Presidente del KCIC (Kelowna Canadian Italian Club), David Hawkins, e la passata Presidente

del Sons of Italy Galileo Lodge, Renata Simonelli. Il Kelowna Canadian Italian Club è stato fondato nel 1966 e l’anno prossimo festeggerà i 55 anni. Mentre il Sons of Italy appartiene al Order of Sons and Daughter of Italy Canada. La sede di Kelowna è stata fondata nel 2012 ed è la sede più ad ovest nel territorio canadese. Ho chiesto loro come vedono la Comunita’ italiana a Kelowna. David racconta che con un’immigrazione italiana di più di 125 anni, gli immigrati italiani hanno avuto un ruolo importante nella crescita di questa regione, in particolare nello sviluppo dell’industria del vino. Per questo motivo il KCIC sta lavorando ad un evento che si terrà l’11 Maggio, in collaborazione con il Museo di Kelowna, Kelowna Museum Society, “Un lavoro d’amore”, per celebrare il contributo degli italiani nell’Industria vinicola dell’Okanagan. “Gli Italiani che fanno parte della nostra comunità amano l’Italia e le loro famiglie. Sono orgogliosi di es-sere italiani e vogliono tramandare le proprie tradizioni ai figli” dice David. Renata, che è stata Presidente del Club Italiano Sons of Italy per diversi anni ed ancora collabora a stretto contatto con l’attuale Presidente, Eddy Nardin, ci racconta che oggi i giovani sono più interessati alle proprie radici ed alla riscoperta dei valori italiani. “Una volta i figli degli immigrati non volevano sembrare diversi, volevano essere canadesi ed integrarsi il prima possibile. Oggi invece sono interessati e fieri delle loro origini, studiano la lingua italiana e vogliono prendere la cittadinanza italiana. Noto una forte rivalutazione del paese Italia ed un rinnovato senso di appartenenza” dice Renata.

Ho chiesto loro quali sono gli obbiettivi culturali del Club che rappresentano. David ci dice che il KCIC vuole continuare a tramandare le tradizioni italiane, ma bisogna anche riconoscere i cambiamenti ed accettare di coinvolgere i nuovi immigrati e le nuove generazioni, pur nel rispetto del passato. Il Club ha avuto un forte impulso soprattutto in questi ultimi anni grazie alla partecipazione dei figli degli immigrati degli anni ’50 e ’60, canadesi di prima generazione, che hanno saputo affiancare i loro genitori e portare nuove idee e partecipazione all’interno del Club. “L’obiettivo principale del Club è quello di incoraggiare gli italo-canadesi della Comunità dell’Okanagan ad esplorare le proprie origini, riscoprire il proprio passato attraverso la lingua, il cibo ed il vino italiano, e attraverso viaggi in Italia per conoscere il passato ed avere collegamenti con le famiglie ed i luoghi d’origine” dice David. Renata dice che il Club Sons of Italy ha come obiettivo principale quello di mantenere la cultura italiana e la lingua. Inoltre il Club svolge una importante funzione sociale per gli italiani in quanto aiuta gli anziani con la documentazione necessaria per le pratiche burocratiche quali per esempio pensioni e cittadinanza. “Manteniamo un buon rapporto anche con le altre etnie presenti nell’Okanagan, con i quali collaboriamo e condividiamo eventi. In particolare, abbiamo un buon rapporto con la comunità tedesca con cui condividiamo la sede per i nostri eventi” dice Renata. Il Sons of Italy conta circa un’ottantina di membri ed ha da poco aperto la possibilità di essere un Social Member, ovvero un membro non di origini italiane ma che vuole imparare e condividere la cultura italiana attraverso lo studio della lingua, del cibo e delle attività sociali. Infine ho chiesto loro personalmente quali aspetti della cultura italiana preferiscono. David è legato alla comunità italiana grazie a sua moglie Lisa Fabris, il cui padre Rino è nato in Friuli. Adora la storia italiana, e come gli italiani hanno contribuito anche alla costruzione della ferrovia in British Columbia. Per questo motivo incoraggia la raccolta di documenti

e documentazione e lo sviluppo della biblioteca all’interno del Club. David incoraggia tutti a contribuire con nuove idee e ad essere membri attivi della comunità perché’ ritiene che la parte sociale e lo stare insieme a celebrare il buon cibo ed il buon vino e le tradizioni sia una parte fondamentale della cultura italiana. Renata è italo-canadese. Originaria del Lazio ha vissuto avanti indietro dall’Italia al Canada per tutta la sua vita. Insegna da anni la lingua italiana al club Sons Of Italy e viaggia spesso in Italia per trovare la sua famiglia e per scoprire i luoghi più nascosti del Bel Paese. Gli aspetti che preferisce dell’Italia sono sicuramente la Cultura e l’Arte che condivide con i suoi studenti durante le lezioni di lingua italiana. Sia David, sia Renata, rappresentano la Comunità Italiana a Kelowna e svolgono un ruolo importante. A loro ed a tutti i volontari che operano e collaborano con loro affinché’ gli eventi e le iniziative culturali abbiano successo va il nostro grazie. Diverse sono le iniziative che i due club propongono per il 2020. Alcuni eventi promossi dal KCIC includono classi di cucina “La bella tavola”, il caffè sociale “Giuseppe’s cafe’”, la scuola di lingua Italiana per adulti, ragazzi e bambini, ed un nuovo programma per la riscoperta delle origini italiane “La nostra Famiglia Italiana”. Il Sons of Italy ha in programma un Pot Luck dinner Party a marzo per celebrare il buon cibo italiano e lo stare insieme. Sempre a marzo propongono una serata danzante con Pizza, dolci e musica. Ed infine per la primavera continuano le classi di lingua italiana e le classi di cucina italiana. Come vedete la Comunità italiana nell’Okanagan attraverso i due club sul territorio ha tantissime iniziative di carattere sociale e culturale e invitano tutti coloro che hanno origini italiane e non, a partecipare a questi eventi o a diventare membri dei club. Dal Marco Polo auguriamo quindi ai club italiani buon lavoro e buona fortuna per tutte le attività che hanno pianificato sul territorio per il 2020. Grazie ad un reporter sul posto, raccon-teremo le attività, gli eventi e le manifestazioni che si svolgono in questa parte della British Columbia che con i suoi vigneti e le sue coltivazioni di alberi da frutto tanto assomiglia e ricorda alcune parti dell’Italia. Attraverso interviste agli immigrati, ai canadesi di origine italiane, agli imprenditori ital-iani che lavorano per portare la cultura e lo stile italiano in questa parte del Canada, vi racconteremo come questa comunità sostiene e celebra la cultura italiana e tiene vive le tradizioni ed i legami con il Bel Paese.

Maurizio Schweizer Celentano Tribute

Wins the hearts of Vancouver!

On Friday night, Vancouver’s Italo-Canadian, Russian-Canadian and everything in

between were treated to an epic musical performance celebrating the man and music of Adriano Celentano. Maurizio Schweizer’s uncanny resemblance and persona, including his unique spring-like dance moves, keeping true to Celentano’s nickname ‘Il Molleggiato’, is extraordinary. More

than a music concert showcasing Celentano’s legendary songs - Schweizer and the entire ensemble delivered a story engaging and transporting the audience with humour, trivia and other Celentano references from film props to costume changes. It was a night of nostalgia,

community and warm spirit - in which for a few hours we were swept away to a time and place where the music and charm filled hearts and brought smiles to faces. Schweizer’s Celentano Tribute brilliantly shared the magic of Celentano’s influence on Italian music as an innovator, beating the time of three generations and playing with every genre from rock’n’roll to rap. With close to 30 of Celentano’s greatest songs, memorable moments included opening song Svalutation, a rockabilly-style favourite released by Celentano in 1976, and named using a mock English word taken from the Italian ‘svalutazione’ (which translates to ‘devaluation’), intended to criticize the Italian economical and political crisis of the time. Threading themes of Celentano’s American music influence, songs also included early rock’n’roll roots from the late 50s and early 60s, when Celentano, heavily inspired by Elvis Presley, was credited for introducing rock’n’roll to Italy: Il Tuo Bacio e Come Rock and 24 Mila Baci. Love, life, social conscience and spirituality formed the foundation of many of Celentano’s songs - themes too which connected with the audience via Maurizio’s renditions of L’Emozione Non Ha Voce, Storia D’Amore, Soli, Si e Spento il Sole, Aqua e Sale, Confessa, Il Tempo Se Ne Va, Il Ragazzo Della Via Gluck, and Preghero - which is the Italian version of Ben E. King’s ‘Stand By Me’. The concert also included Toto Cutugno’s L’Italiano, a song actually proposed to Celentano first, who turned it down, saying he would never perform it because he didn’t need to say he was ‘un Italiano vero’ since he and everyone else knew he was. Interestingly enough, the roots of ‘L’Italiano’ were born in Canada after a Cutugno concert, when Cutugno was inspired by a few key words ‘lasciatemi cantare’ and later took the idea to Popy Minellono in Milan who wrote the song. Concert attendees were also treated to scenes from Celentano’s well known films Il Bisbetico Domato with Schweizer’s trio of female vocalists performing Fiori e Fantasia, while Schweizer perfectly recreates, in

rhythmic dance form and fitted cropped pants, the grape stomping scene from film. Other film references included Yuppi Du, Bingo Bongo, a comedy where Celentano played an Italian Tarzan character (with deeper message advocating humane treatment of animals) and Serafino. The concert symbolically ends with the much anticipated Azzurro, followed by Ciao Ragazzi Ciao, where Schweizer and his ensemble embrace the room with all the ingredients of the evening that define the true meaning of being CELENTANIZED: charismatic, theatrical, legendary, engaging, and humourous with passionate warmth, capturing hearts in an authentic journey beyond expectations. Much gratitude to Federico Fuoco and F2 Productions for bringing another spectacular concert to Vancouver - and to the community who rallied and supported this event with their presence and spirit. It takes a village to keep these cultural experiences and Italian music artists coming to this beautiful city. Grazie mille a tutti quanti per essere venuti a questo spettacolo!

Come splendide perle infilate in una preziosa collana, i variopinti borghi marinari della Riviera Ligure che, uno dopo l'altro si affacciano su un mare limpido e dalle sfumature sorprendenti, regalano un susseguirsi di bellezze paesaggistiche e tesori di es-trema rilevanza storica ed architettonica incastonati in una cornice dal fascino irresistibile. Non si più desiderare di più per concedersi una romantica fuga di coppia con la propria dolce metà. Le località della Rivera si rivelano, infatti, una meta perfetta per godere di un mare meraviglioso in ogni stagione, tanto in estate, quando si può godere del-l'opportunità di immergersi e rinfrescarsi in acque cristalline ed azzurrissime, tanto in inverno, quando i paesaggi marinari regalano suggestioni tutte spe-ciali che invitano alla contemplazione ed alla medi-tazione. Portofino non fa eccezione ed, anzi, questa splendida gemma della Riviera di Levante offre tutto ciò che serve ad ogni coppia di innamorati per stac-care la spina dalla quotidianità e ritagliarsi un mo-

mento di condivisione carico di emozioni. Sono tanti gli artisti e gli scrittori che, nel corso della storia, si sono lasciati incantare dal fascino senza tempo di Portofino, con le sue case colorate che si specchiano nel mare e la natura lussureggiante del Parco Natu-rale Regionale che avvolge il borgo come in un verde abbraccio. Guy de Maupassant, ad esempio, de-scrisse la località come “un piccolo villaggio che si al-larga come un arco di luna attorno a questo calmo bacino”. Le parole cariche di suggestione dello scrit-tore francese sarebbero già sufficienti a risvegliare la curiosità di ammirare dal vivo questa piccola perla colorata posata al confine tra il Golfo del Tigullio e il Golfo Paradiso. Ma quando si scopre che Portofino, tra i suoi scorci incantevoli e la natura mozzafiato custodisce auten-tici tesori di elevato valore storico, culturale e natu-ralistico, diventa davvero difficile resistere alla tentazione di raggiungere il borgo e perdersi tra le sue bellezze in dolce compagnia. Incastonati tra il

Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino e l'Area Marina Protetta di Portofino si scopriranno siti di grande fas-cino che sarà ancora più piacevole ammirare assieme ad una persona speciale. Per portare immediatamente il romanticismo al mas-simo livello possibile, vale la pena concedersi una pi-acevole passeggiata alla scoperta della graziosa “piazzetta” dalle atmosfere esclusive, tanto amata dal jet set con i suoi eleganti negozi e le viuzze suggestive, e del delizioso porticciolo che, con le sue tipiche case colorate, rievoca la lunga storia marinara del borgo i cui abitanti erano definiti “delfini” da greci e romani, tanto erano abili nella navigazione. Se il richiamo del mare dovesse risultare davvero ir-resistibile, vale la pena proseguire la propria passeg-giata sino al faro di Punta del Capo (Punta Portofino) dal quale si può ammirare uno dei panorami più spettacolari del promontorio che domina l'intera baia facendo percepire tutta la bellezza e la potenza del mare.

Soon after the Lega Calcio president Paolo DelPino made the decision of postponing the

matchday 26 final six games to May 13th, 2020, discussions and arguments began all around the country on whether or not this was the right decision. As the discussions broke out and the decision was made public, lots of criticism came from the fans end and Lega Calcio regretted the decision they had made.

They decided to reconsider and play the 6 games (Parma-Spal, Milan-Genoa, Sampdoria-Hellas Verona, Udinese-Fiorentina, Juventus-Inter, and Sassuolo-Brescia) between Saturday March 8th and Sunday March 9th. All these games cause the previously scheduled matchday 27th games to be postponed by a week as well as shifting the whole calendar a weekend further. Along

with this, all games in the future are to be played behind closed doors. Some believe that having no fans in the stadium is simply not enough, and that the country is in a state of emergency, making it mandatory to suspend the entire competition to avoid further problems. Although there is still a vivid division of opinions, the games were played today. Last place Spal was able to come away with three points after upsetting 9th place Parma 1-0 away from home, with goal from Andrea Petagna from the penalty spot. Genoa also grabs three vital points against AC Milan in a 2-1 win. The goals from Pandev and Cassata put Genoa up 2-0, then Ibrahimovic got one for the hosts but it

wasn’t enough to get them any points. Genoa moved out of the relegation zone for the moment and into 17th place. In an afternoon full of upsets, 17th place Sampdoria beat 8th place Hellas Verona 2-1 at the Ferraris. An early own goal from Audero gave Hellas the lead but a great performance from Sampdoria the second half and two goals from Quagliarella secured a win for the Blucerchiati. Udinese and Fiorentina went goal less in Udine as the two battled for a better spot in the mid table. Fiorentina came close to a lead when Milenkovic’s shot came off the post near the end of the first half. The big match of this weekend, the Derby d’Italia

between Juventus and Inter, resulted in Juventus taking a win in Torino to regain the first spot in the table that was momentarily occupied by Lazio. The goals from Ramsey and Dybala were huge for Juve in the second half to hand them a very important three points. An overall evenly matched game was decided by the talents on the Juventus side. With Cristiano Ronaldo assisting Ramsey for the first goal and Ramsey assisting Dybala on Juve’s second goal. As the season progresses, we’ll find out how the Lega Calcio will handle the situation in order to ensure safety for the fans but without (hopefully) taking away the pleasure of watching the games.

Clearly, these types of questions can cause some anxiety – and, even more importantly, they may lead you to make poor decisions. Emotions are obviously closely tied to money – but they really should not play a big role in your spending, saving and investing choices. Develop a financial strategy. By developing a sound financial strategy, you can reduce money-related stress and help yourself feel empowered as you look into the future. A comprehensive strategy can help you identify your goals – a down payment on a new home, post-secondary education for your children, a comfortable retirement, and so on – and identify a path toward reaching them. Your financial strategy should incorporate a variety of factors, including your age, risk tolerance, income level, family situation and more. Here is the key point: By creating a long-term strategy and sticking to it, you will be far less likely to overreact to events such as market downturns and less inclined to give in to impulsive and expensive - purchases. And without such a strategy, you will almost certainly have less chance of achieving your important goals. Get an "accountability partner." Your relationship with money doesn’t have to be monog-amous – you can get help from an "accountability partner." Too many people keep their financial concerns and plans to themselves, not even sharing them with their partners or other family members. But by being open about your finances to your loved ones, you can not only avoid misplaced expectations but also enlist the help of someone who may be able to help keep you on track toward your short and long-term goals. But you may also benefit from the help of a financial professional – someone with the perspective, ex-perience and skills necessary to help you make the right moves. La fava è una leguminosa dal nome scientifico Vicia faba. Secondo un'antica tradizione agraria, nell'orto sarebbe bene seminare alcune fave

all'interno di altre colture, poiché questo legume, pltre ad arricchire il terreno di azoto, attirerebbe su di sé tutti i parassiti, che di conseguenza non infesterebbero gli altri ortaggi. La fava viene avvicendata come coltura miglioratrice tra due frumenti. Il terreno viene preparato in estate, poi affinato e concimato: la semina si effettua in autunno e la si fa a righe o a buchette, in modo da avere 8 - 10 piante per mq. La raccolta circa 180 giorni dopo la semina. Per le zone fredde si consiglia di seminare in primavera. La fava è ormai diffusa non solo in tutta Italia, main tutto il mondo: basti pensare che uno dei maggiori produttori mondiali è la Cina. Le fave per quanto fossero già perfettamente conosciute ai tempi dell'antica Grecia, non mancavano mai sulle tavole dei Romani. Il contenuto proteico ne ha fatto per lunghi periodi uno dei classici cibi dei poveri, grazie al prezzo economico, alla facilità di raccolta e produzione e anche di diffusione, e alle ottime proprietà salutari e nutrizionali, apportando una notevole quantità di viamine, minerali e ferro. Ovviamente se consumate crude, poiché la cottura spesso distrugge alcuni componenti. Esistono alcune varietà di fava, maquelle da consumo è detta Major, quella che troviamo sulle tavole nel periodo primaverile, sotto forma di baccelli che contengono grandi semi schiacciati, da 5 a 10, che vanno consumati dopo aver eliminato l'involucro. La pianta può raggiungere

una altezza di 140 cm; i baccelli hanno dimensioni che arrivano a circa 25 cm. La fava in cucina. Come tipo di legumi, le fave possono essere reperibili sia fresche, sia essiccate, sia congelate. A differenza di fagioli, lenticchie et similia, però, le fave presentano il vantaggio sia dal punto di vista del sapore, sia da quello delle proprietà nutritive, poiché vitamine e minerali non vengono distrutti dalla cottura. Consumate allo stato fresco possono essere accompagnate da formaggi, meglio se pecorino, da salumi, in particolare pancetta o prosciutto, fungere da antipasto ma anche da specialità tipica del periodo. Con pecorino e pancetta si possono realizzare condimenti per paste, sfoglie, finger food, e le si fave possono presentare anche in puree cotte, oppure possono arricchire zuppe e minestroni insieme ad altre verdure e legumi, dando origine ad un ottimo purè. In Puglia troviamo sulle tavole il famoso piatto di fave e cicorielle"; un gustoso pure' di fave con contorno di cicorielle selvatiche spontanee che crescono nei campi incolti. Proprietà salutari Le fave sono ricche di acqua, fibre, proteine e minerali: queste caratteristiche fanno delle fave un cibo ipocalorico e con ottimi benefici sulla salute. Infine questo meraviglioso legume, contiene una fonte di vitamine, soprattutto la C e molte del gruppo B, vitamina A ed E: buona la presenza di Ferro, accompagnato da Potassio, Fosforo, Calcio, Sodio, Magnesio, Rame, Selenio. Insomma! Che dire! Un toccasana per la nostra salute!

On Tuesday night, the East End Boys Club, founded by James Crescenzo, in collaboration with the Templeton Secondary

School film and theatre departments, run by Tanya Zambrano and Corin Browne, put on a play and showed several student-made videos. It was also a night for the East End Boys Club to show their appreciation to the donors, mentors and volunteers who go out of their way to support the

boys and girls in the program. From business tycoons, to community and school leaders as well as parents, teachers and students, all came together to marvel at the talent and hard work put forth by dozens of Templeton’s actors, stage crews, videographers, writers and producers. Everything was put together by teenagers with the adults only acting in supervisory roles. We were greeted at the doors by charming, impeccably dressed hosts and hostesses then quickly ushered into the main lobby of the school, where a buffet of Italian delicacies, pastries and cakes were generously provided by the hard-working and lovely ladies of Lega Feminile Confratellanza. These wonderful women, all volunteers, cater our VIP nights as well as providing several dinners throughout the year for our boys, girls and mentors. Grazie mille! After being fed we were entertained by the sweet song stylings of Stephen Scaccia, and then the “VIPs” were escorted to the auditorium to watch a series of videos. From murder to teenage angst, and quite a few things in between, these videos were of outstanding quality and very entertaining. Again, all written, acted, directed and produced by students. Many thanks were extended to the Vancouver film communities, Vancouver Film Studios, the MPPIA who generously donated high-tech equipment, including professional cameras. The quality of the films was indistinguishable from something you would see in a theater. Once done, the audience moved to the studio to watch a play. Weird, wonderful, sad, joyous and interspersed with real teenage viewpoints with references to old movies, science fiction and old-fashioned song and dance, this production entertained for the whole time. It wrapped up with a few speeches and thank you’s to the donors, too many to list, but included the original backers of the program, Italo-Canadians Frank Guistra, Francesco Aquilini, Paolo Aquilini, Jim Bosa, Ryan Bosa, Jason Bosa and also many Italo-Canadian mentors and supporters. Thanks also went to Judy Hager, John Mackay, Chris Mackay, Brian Paes, Brian Braga, Tim Young, Tommy Humphries and Kyle Washington. All of the above are generous backers and all have their own charitable foundations.

Peter Katsionis is a born Vancouverite, now living in Burnaby and enjoying a life that combines the pleasures of retirement with serving the community and working at the

University of British Columbia. A teacher for the VSB for 36 years, Peter had a career where he ushered in many “firsts”. Often called a pioneer for his innovations, Peter had one common mission: making education successful for all, from the most challenged to the most gifted students. For his efforts, he has been awarded Canada’s top teaching prizes, including being a finalist for the Governor General’s Award and winning both the Government of Canada History Award, and the most prestigious, the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. In “retiremement” Peter took an adjunct professor’s position at UBC where he mentors future teachers as their faculty advisor. Working with several schools in Vancouver, Peter finds himself directly involved in several communities, which has enhanced his appreciation for the diversity in this city. It is this concern that has led him to work with the East End Boys Club, founded and directed by his friend of forty years, A. J. ( Jimmy) Crescenzo. This wonderful charity helps young boys and girls with the challenges of school, family life, work and life in general. Jimmy has assembled a large group of people, many of them Italo-Canadians, who through generous donations of money, time and support are making a huge difference for so many students at Templeton and other schools in Vancouver. As a “senior”, Peter works hard behind the scenes, the “consigliere” to the godfather of good works, Jimmy. On a personal note, Peter (a proud first generation, Greek) has been married to Maria, a school principal and an Italo-Canadian, for 38 years. They have two sons, Matthew (Cristina), David and the new shining light of his life, his first grandchild, Alessia. He considers himself a community person, trying his best to support local business, local issues and local concerns. Rome as his favorite city, he can state unequivocally, una fazza, una razza.

Canada is known for many great things, including its diversity. Every year Canada’s Best Diversity Em-ployers competition recognizes the country’s leaders in creating inclusive workplaces. The competition recognizes inclusivity for employees from five diverse groups: women, visible minorities, per-sons with disabilities, Indigenous peo-ples, and LGBTQ2s+ peoples, according to a release. “Inclusion is a central part of conversa-tions happening across the country,” Kristina Leung, Senior Editor of Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, said in a release. “Organizations that make this an inte-gral part of their workplace reap the benefits of diverse perspectives, which leads to increased innovation, produc-tivity, and engagement.” To determine this year’s winners, Medi-acorp editors reviewed diversity and in-clusiveness initiatives of employers that took part in this year’s Canada’s Top 100 Employers project. From there, a short-list was drawn, and afterwards, finalists were selected which represent the diversity leaders in their industry and region of Canada One outstanding example this year is Toronto-based Rogers Communica-tions Inc., which maintains an Inclusion and Diversity Council. The council has six subcommittees that monitors the progress through quarterly metrics of representation, promotion, and reten-tion and engagement scores. Alberta Health Services is also a notable

example. The company organizes In-digenous Listening Days to understand the needs of their Indigenous employ-ees, which led to the creation of an In-digenous health strategy committee. Luxury multi-brand fashion retailer Leone, which has been a part of the downtown Vancouver landscape for decades and a favourite among wealthy locals

and tourists, is closing. A spokesperson for Leone has not returned a call, but the company’s Facebook page advertises a closing down sale beginning Friday. The post does not say why the iconic high-end shop is closing, but thanks customers for their support. Alberto Leone, who, along with his former wife Maria, started the tony 25,000-square-foot shop at Sinclair Centre on West Hastings Street in 1987, sold it in 2015. Since then, the store has continually downsized, including losing the third floor footwear, the cafe, and earlier this year the lower level L2 shop, which opened in 1996 to appeal to younger shoppers. TLeone said Friday he was sad to hear that the store he started was closing, but not surprised. “When they started closing downstairs and the bar and the shoes. When you start that trend, eventually you close everything. I knew it was coming,” he said, in a phone interview from Puerto Vallarta. “We introduced high end fashion in Vancouver. I was the first one to import Dolce Gabbana and we did a Versace

boutique. I don’t have to tell you how I feel. It’s just a very sad thing.” Founders Alberto and Maria Leone spent $4 million to open the Italian-style luxury store Leone in one of Vancouver’s oldest landmark buildings in 1987 after they had operated several other high-end boutiques. When it opened, the palatial store with its arched ceilings (which has been used as a set in several movies) was unique, it’s only real competition Holt Renfrew at Pacific Centre. It swiftly became a draw for the well heeled crowd, including celebrities and business moguls. However over the last decade, many of the luxury brands that were part of Leone, such as Burberry and Prada have opened their own stores in Vancouver creating more competition in the downtown core. The Leones, known as Vancouver’s first family of retail fashion, moved to Vancouver from Montreal in the 1970s, and Alberto worked as a hair stylist, before opening a chain of Alberto’s fashion stores. Those closed when they started up Leone. “They lost a lot of the big names, and had a problem managing the competition,” he said.

La Crostata e’ decisamente uno dei classici dolci della nonna. Ogni nonna possiede la propria ricetta personale, piena di segreti e di tanto amore. La ricetta che voglio condividere con voi appartiene a mia suocera Marina, la nonna dei miei bambini, che recentemente e’ venuta a mancare. Me la preparava ogni volta che la desideravo ed era il classico dolce che non mancava sulla tavola delle feste con la famiglia e gli amici. Pensando alla crostata, mi affiora il ricordo di 10 anni fa quando, in uno dei miei viaggi da Vancouver all’Italia, mia suocera decise di farmi un’intera crostata alla marmellata per rendere il nostro viaggio piu’ dolce. E’ stato decisamente un viaggio piu’ dolce e la sua crostata conquisto’ il cuore delle hostess e di mia sorella. 2Un vasetto di Marmellata 22 cucchiai di liquore a piacere 2Un pizzico d’amore Metodo: Mischiare farina, zucchero, lievito, sale e aggiungi il burro ammorbidito.Mischia con le mani e fai una conca dove metterai le uova.Impasta il tutto fino ad ottenere un composto morbido e non appiccicoso. Prendi la pasta frolla e fai una palla e avvolgila nella pellicola trasparente, mettila in frigo e falla riposare almeno mezz’ora. Dopo mezz’ora, riprendila e metti da parte un terzo { ti servira’ per le strisce}. Con l’aiuto della carta da forno stendi la frolla fino ad ottenere un disco con spessore di 4 mm e con un diametro di 28/30 centimetri. Solleva la carta da forno e mettila nella teglia rotanda, tagliando via gli eccessi. Con una forchetta fai dei buchi sul fondo. Aggiungi la marmellata, dove a piacere avrai aggiunto il liquore, e spalmala uniformemente. Stendi la frolla rimanente per fare le strisce oppure cuoricini, oppure stelle! La cucina e’ fantasia e liberta’. Mia suocera spesso la decorava con cuoricini. Cuocila In Forno caldo a 180 gradi per 30/40 minuti, fino a quando diventa della dorata. Consigli: per stendere la frolla uso la carta da forno sia sotto che sopra e poi con il mattarello diventa piu’ facile. Le strisce con il caldo della cucina tendono a rompersi quindi le metto in freezer per mezz’ora prima di metterle sopra la torta. Buon Appetito!

L’evento Pasta Mic Show, organizzato sabato sera 7 marzo, previa prenotazione nella location del Centro Culturale Italiano, e’ stato un vero successo: la sala dell’osteria era full di persone entusiaste e con tanta voglia di divertirsi. Il cibo buono e l’atmosfera hanno fatto la differenza con un dopo cena di intrattenimento a cura di Mario Miceli e tanti attori: ne citiamo qualcuno Aaron Arya, Katrina Bennett,

Chris Gaskin and Joey Commisso. Anche se i commedianti hanno recitato in inglese (lingua ormai universale) lo scopo di queste serate e’ sempre tramandare i valori, la cultura e le tradizioni italiane che ci aiutano a a mantenere vivi i legami con il Bel Paese: le radici non si devono dimenticare specialmente in un momento difficile come quello che stanno vivendo i connazionali in questo periodo. Un plauso agli organizzatori il direttore del centro Mario Miceli ed il suo staff tra cui spicca sempre con grande disponibilita’ e professionalita’ il direttore culturale Giulio Recchioni che ha introdotto la serata.
