Ein nôd yw darparu cwricwlwm eang a chytbwys sy’n rhoi cyfle i ddisgyblion ddatblygu arbenigedd a llwyddo mewn pynciau yn academaidd, a gobeithio, meithrin yn y disgyblion gyfrifoldeb tuag atynt eu hunain, tuag at bobl eraill a thuag at ein cymdeithas.

This booklet has been written to accompany the options sheet and should assist you to finalise your

decisions about your choice of subjects for year 10.

Our aim is to organize a broad and balanced curriculum giving pupils the opportunity to specialize and succeed

academically in subjects, and also, hopefully, to nurture in the pupils a responsibility towards themselves as

individuals, towards other people and towards our society.

WJEC%GCSE%in%ENGLISH%LANGUAGE%%Unit%1:%Oracy%Task 1 (10%) –%Individual Researched Presentation (40 marks)One individual, researched presentation, which may include responses to questions and feedback, based on WJEC set themes. Task 2 (10%) –%Responding and Interacting (40 marks)One group discussion to stimuli provided by WJEC to initiate the discussion. For both tasks, half of the marks for AO1 will be awarded for the choice of appropriate register, grammatical accuracy and range of sentence structures with the remainder for content and organisation. Unit 2: Reading and Writing: Narration, Description and Exposition External Examination 40% 2 hours Section A (20%) –%Reading (40 marks)Understanding of at least one description, one narration and one exposition text, assessed through a range of questions. This section will also include an editing task focusing on understanding short texts at word, sentence and text level. Section B (20%) –%Writing (40 marks)One writing task to be selected from a choice of two that could be either description, narration or exposition. This section will also include one proofreading task focusing on writing accurately. Half of the marks for this section will be awarded for communication and organisation (meaning, purpose, readers and structure) and the other for writing accurately (language, grammar, punctuation and spelling). Unit 3: Reading and Writing: Argumentation, Persuasion & Instructional External Examination 40% 2 hours Section A (20%) –%Reading (40 marks)Understanding of at least one argumentation, one persuasion and one instructional text, assessed through a range of questions. Section B (20%) –%Writing (40 marks)One compulsory argumentation writing task and one compulsory persuasion writing task. Unit 2: 2 hours examination assessment 40% Either: English/Welsh/Irish Literary Heritage Drama: An Inspector Calls (Priestley) (20%) Contemporary Prose: Heroes (Cormier); OR Resistance (Sheers) (20%) Or: Contemporary Drama: Blood Brothers (Russell) (20%) English/Welsh/Irish Literary Heritage Prose: Lord of the Flies (Golding) (20%) Unit 3: non-examination assessment: 25% A play by Shakespeare chosen by the centre. WJEC will set a generic task on a specific theme . Poetry comparison: Stipulated poetry from the Library of Wales anthology Poetry 1900-2000: One Hundred Poets from Wales. Candidates study fifteen specified poems listed for the chosen theme. WJEC will set generic tasks on the theme. The task requires comparison of at least two poems.

While the historians’ chief aim is to interpret the past they also develop skills which are valuable in a variety of fields. The ability to analyse and interpret information is as relevant to the mechanic or retailer, as to the archivist or lawyer. Nevertheless, perhaps the chief reason for choosing history is the enjoyment of learning about the past, and leading to a greater understandingof its impact on our present and future lives.

The aim of the GCSE History course is to present a broad and varied introduction to the study of history. The topics taught includeaspects of Welsh, European and international history, while introducing some dominant systems of government which have had adirect influence on today’s world.

The subject is increasing in popularity these days. One does not have to be a ‘religious’ person to study the course, and it is certain to give you many opportunities to think and come to understand more about life and the major religions’ standpoints on contemporary issues like war and euthanasia, to name only two. That is the main reason why those pupils who embark on the course enjoy it and consider the topics studied to have relevance in their daily lives.

What is different (about this course) is the fact that this specification offers the study of Religious Studies in a thematic issues-based way, investigating the central matters in life and the human experience. It researches the relevance of religion, values and ‘religious’ traditions on these matters.

SUMMARY OF ASSESSMENT

Learners will be assessed through a range of short and extended questions. The questions will be based on audiovisual stimuli and other sources. The Learners will be assessed in three different activities in the role of performer in at least one individual sport, one team sport and one other. One activity will be a major activity which will have a personal fitness programme linked to the activity.

SUBJECT CONTENT

The subject content focuses on five key areas: 1. Health, training and exercise2. Exercise physiology3. Movement analysis4. Psychology of sport and physical activity5. Socio-cultural issues in sport and physicalactivity.All of the subject content is assessed in Unit 1 aspart of the written examination andin Unit 2 as part of the personal fitness programme.Units 1 and 2 require learners to demonstrate anunderstanding of how bothqualitative and quantitative data are collected.Learners are also required to analyseand evaluate data. In Unit 2 learners have topresent data, including tables andgraphs, as part of the personal fitness programme.

What will I learn?This course will help you to learn: x How to become ‘tech savvy’ – producers of technology products and

systems, rather than just consumers of them. x About the opportunities and skills required in the IT sector and some

aspects of the creative industries, e. g computer games development.

x About the types of jobs and companies you could work for and the attitude that is required to work in the Information and Creative Technology sector.

How will I learn? The course is delivered at the Coleg Menai Bangor site over 2 years (Years 10 and 11). It will be taught between 4pm and 6pm once a week, i.e. 2 hours a week over 2 years, and transport will be provided from and back to your school. This course is a mix of classroom and practical tasks and you will get a chance to prepare and practise your skills before you are assessed, so that you know and understand what you will have to do.

What will I need? Experience and competence in using computers, preferably in creating content.

How will I be assessed? By the performance of assignments and practical work, which will be assessed mainly by your course tutor. You will also complete a portfolio of work, as well as sit an external examination for the core unit.

What happens after this course? After Year 11, you could go on to the full time Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma. You could also choose other suitable qualifications depending on what you want to look at next. Your careers adviser will be able to help you with your choices when you leave school.

What will I learn? This course will help you to learn: ● About the types of jobs you could work in and what it would be like to

work in the uniformed Public Services Industry;● Knowledge of public service, and how to help different types of

members of the public in a range of different situations.● Improving health and fitness for entry into the uniformed public services,

eg Police, Fire Service, Paramedics, Coast Guards, Armed Forces.

How will I learn? You will spend a full morning or afternoon at Coleg Menai, Bangor site. The course is a mix of classroom and compulsory practical based tasks, which could include team building activities, fitness, navigation, hill walking and orienteering. You will get a chance to prepare and practise your skills before you are assessed so that you know and understand what you will have to do.

How will I be assessed? You will produce coursework which is assessed by your course tutor and the awarding body. There will also be a series of practical tasks so that you can demonstrate your knowledge of public service skills.

What happens after this course? At the end of this course, here are some of the pathways available:-

● Follow a mix of vocational and academic courses as part of a school /Coleg Menai partnership, eg Level 3 BTEC Certificate / SubsidiaryDiploma / AS / A Level.

● Follow a Public Service qualification at level 2 or 3 at Coleg Menai,eg BTEC Level 2 Diploma, BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma,Diploma or Extended Diploma.

and nationally. x What it would be like to work in engineering. x How to use drawings and specifications to manufacture components using

traditional machining equipment (lathes, milling machines, surface grinders and drilling machines).

x How to use drawings and specifications to write CNC part programs, (instructions that a computer controlled machine uses), to produce components on a range of CNC machines.

x How to check the accuracy of components. x About Health and Safety Law and environmental issues in the workplace. How will I learn?The course is a partnership between Arfon and Môn secondary schools and Coleg Menai and is the equivalent of 1 GCSE. Your school will arrange free transport to and from Coleg Menai and you will spend 3 hours a week in Year 10 and 11 at the Bangor site. Site visits and experience with major local employers will also be organised. This course is a mix of practical and classroom tasks and you will get a chance to prepare and practise your skills before you are assessed so that you know and understand what you will have to do. Mathematics is an integral and essential part of this course.What will I need?Students will be required to wear suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whilst in the workshops, (eg safety boots and overalls) which will be provided by Coleg Menai. How will I be assessed?You will produce work which is assessed by your course tutor and the examination board and there will be an external examination for the core unit. How will I learn? The course is based at the Llangefni Coleg Menai site for 3 hours per week in Year 10 and 11 and transport will be provided from and back to your school. The course is a mix of classroom and practical tasks and you will get a chance to prepare and practise your skills before you are assessed, so that you know and understand what you will have to do.

What will I need? Students will be required to wear suitable personal protection clothing (safety boots and overalls) which will be available from the College.

How will I be assessed? You will produce a log book and portfolio which is assessed mainly by your course tutor.

What happens after this course? After Year 11, you could go on to the City and Guilds Auto Maintenance and Repair or a day release City and Guilds Auto Maintenance course. You could also study a full-time EAL Performing Engineering Operations Level 2 course at the college. After all this, you will be well prepared for work and/or to start further training in the automotive industry. But, if you don’t fancy carrying on with automotive engineering, you could choose other suitable qualifications depending on what you want to look at next. What will I learn?The BTEC Extended Certificate in Vehicle Technology is designed for learners who are interested in working with motor vehicles at an extended level, and who wish to develop an academic grounding in specialist skills and knowledge to help them either enter employment or move on to further vocational education and training. Areas available to focus may include: vehicle engine system principles, vehicle science and applied mathematics or vehicle layout and operation of vehicle systems.

Sut fyddaf yn dysgu? Mae’r cwrs yn cael ei addysgu yn Coleg Menai, Bangor am ddwy awr arôl ysgol (4yp-6yp) ar brynhawn dydd Llun. Mae’n gwrs blwyddyn ac yn gymysgedd o dasgau ystafell ddosbarth ac ymarferol. Bydd yna gyfleoedd i gydweithio mewn grŵp ac i gyflwyno gwaith yn unigol. Fe fydd disgyblion gan amlaf yn gweithio ar systemau gyfrifiadurol, gyda gwaith ehangach yn dibynnu ar gynllunio ac adrodd yn ôl.

Beth fyddaf ei angen? Mae’n hanfodol gallu perfformio ar offeryn cerdd o unrhyw fath ac hefyd bod gyda diddordeb yn y maes technoleg cerdd.

Sut fyddaf yn cael fy asesu? Bydd arholiad allanol mewn un uned, asesiad parhaol i’r ymarferion/ perfformiadau a bydd aseiniadau yn cael eu cwblhau yn y coleg a’u hasesu yn fewnol ac allanol.

Beth sy’n digwydd ar ôl y cwrs hwn? Byddwch yn darfod y cwrs ar ddiwedd Blwyddyn 10. Ar ôl gorffen eich TGAU, mae modd symud ymlaen drwy wneud mwy o unedau er mwyn ennill BTEC Lefel 2 Diploma neu BTEC Lefel 3 Diploma Atodol/Diploma/ Diploma Estynedig mewn cerddoriaeth yng Ngholeg Menai. Mae’r cwrs hefyd yn meithrin yr agwedd broffesiynol sydd yn rhan allweddol o gyd-chwarae mewn band. Bydd eich ymgynghorydd gyrfau yn medru eich helpu gydag eich dewisiadau pan adewch yr ysgol.

How will I learn? The course is being taught at Coleg Menai, Bangor for 2 hours afterschool (4pm-6pm) on Monday afternoon. It is a one-year course and a mixture of classroom and practical tasks. There are possibilities to work as part of a group and individually. Pupils will generally be using computers to work on extended tasks, with the emphasis on planning and reporting back. What will I need? It is essential that you have the ability to perform using musical instruments of any kind. It is important that you are interested in music technology. How will I be assessed? There will be an external exam in one unit, continual assessment for the rehearsals/performances, and assignments will have to be completed in college and assessed internally and externally. What happens after this course? You will finish the course at the end of Year 10. After completing your GCSEs, it is possible to further your interest by completing more units and achieving a Level 2 BTEC Diploma or Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma/ Diploma/Extended Diploma in Music at Coleg Menai. The course also nurtures the professional attitude of having to play in a band. Your careers adviser will be able to help you with your choices when you leave school.

Sut fyddaf yn dysgu? Mae’r cwrs yn cael ei ddysgu ar safle Coleg Menai ym

Mangor am 3 awr yr wythnos ym Mlwyddyn 10 ac 11 ac mae cludiant ar gael o ac yn ôl i'ch ysgol. Mae’r cwrs yn gymysgedd o dasgau ystafell ddosbarth ac ymarferol. Byddwch yn cael cyfle i baratoi ac ymarfer eich sgiliau cyn i chi gael eich asesu, fel eich bod yn gwybod a deall yr hyn y byddwch yn gorfod ei wneud.

Beth fyddaf ei angen? Bydd gofyn i ddysgwyr ddarparu dillad ac esgidiau

salon addas – esgidiau llawn, sgert neu drowsus du a thop gwyn plaen, gwisgo y lleiafswm o emwaith a gwallt hir wedi ei glymu yn ôl.

Sut fyddaf yn cael fy asesu? Byddwch yn cynhyrchu gwaith cwrs a asesir

yn bennaf gan y tiwtor cwrs. Ar ddiwedd y cwrs, byddwch yn sefyll arholiad aml ddewis ar lein a fydd yn profi eich gwybodaeth o’r gwaith.

Beth sy’n digwydd ar ôl y cwrs hwn? Ar ôl Blwyddyn 11, gallwch fynd

ymlaen i Ddiploma Lefel 2 City and Guilds mewn Trin Gwallt neu Therapi Harddwch neu Brentisiaeth Fodern Sylfaenol Lefel 2. Ar ôl hyn i gyd, byddwch wedi eich paratoi yn dda ar gyfer gwaith a/neu ddechrau prentisiaeth yn y diwydiant gwallt a harddwch. Ond, os nad ydych yn ffansio parhau gyda gwallt a harddwch, gallwch ddewis cymwysterau addas eraill yn dibynnu ar yr hyn yr ydych eisiau edrych arno nesaf. Bydd eich ymgynghorydd gyrfau yn medru eich helpu gydag eich dewisiadau pan adewch yr ysgol.

About the types of jobs and salons you could work in and what it would be like to work in the hair and beauty industry. How to do basic colouring and perms (pupils will apply temporary colourto each other’s hair), apply basic make-up, perform a basic manicure and how to keep a work area clean tidy. About basic salon reception duties, your personal presentation and your attitude to work and money.

How will I learn? The course is based on the Bangor Coleg Menai site for

3 hours a week in Years 10 and 11 and transport will be provided from and back to your school. This course is a mix of classroom and practical tasks and you will get a chance to prepare and practise your skills before you are assessed so that you know and understand what you will have to do.

What will I need? Learners will be required to provide suitable salon clothing

and shoes - full shoes, black skirt or trousers and plain white top, wear minimal jewellery and have long hair tied back.

How will I be assessed? You will produce coursework which is assessed

mainly by your course tutor. At the end of the course, you will sit an on-line multiple choice exam that will test your knowledge.

What happens after this course? After Year 11, you could go on to

the City and Guilds Diploma Level 2 in Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy or a Foundation Modern Apprenticeship Level 2. After all this, you will be well prepared for work and/or to start an apprenticeship in the hair and beauty industry. But, if you don’t fancy carrying on with hair and beauty, you could choose other suitable qualifications depending on what you want to look at next. Your careers adviser will be able to help you with your choices when you leave school.
