Strasbourg 2015
• In 2015, there will be two striking events in Strasbourg. • On one hand, celebra8ons for the millennium of the city’s Cathedral. An important event in the history of this city : one thousand years, and so many stories, so much history.
• On the other SaxOpen: the Saxophone will be a star in Strasbourg : musicians, luthiers, the music of today, be it classical or experimental will be omnipresent.
• For SaxOpen, Philippe Geiss, art director for this event, chose Gilbert Artman, Urban sax’s leader. Gilbert then spoke about his project of crea8ng a score to be shared with saxophone players who use the internet,
on the line of “urbansaxvirtual”

Gilbert Artman suggests a performance to link these two events together . This event will be shared by internauts to give a concert which will be an interac8ve mix of reality and the virtual. The concert will naturally end on the square close to the cathedral, and all the church bells and all the saxophones will join together for the finale. This climax will enable the « Infinite loop » to take off (this will be explained later on) and be put in orbit on the web. Urban sax has already composed music for church bells, the opening of the classical music fes8val in St. Jacques de Compostelle among others.

Urban Sax’s approach Urban Sax’s approach With modal music and circular breathing, Gilbert Artman gives priority to tradi8on, the innova8ve side is expressed by Spa0aliza0on and the way sounds and images move. This coupling of musical forms as old as the hills and new technological tools generates an original approach to the performance. This method of giving color to sound enables every member of the audience to be at the root of the sound architecture, of becoming a keystone. For more than 30 years, the Urban Sax gathering of musician/actors has gathered big crowds throughout the world thanks to a subtle balance between experimental music and a spectacular dimension which aCracts the general public.

Prépara8on : For its performances , Urban Sax is used to associa8ng :
The city or the region’s Musical and dancing associa8ons and conservatories, but also the addi8on of speleologists, firemen, pyro technicians… Thus enabling to adapt the performance to its environment, but also to unite all those who live in the city to a privileged moment taking place today, and this permits a more direct way of owning the experience.

Descrip8on of the event : Phase 1 : Work with the community of saxophonists from five con8nents, par8cularly with those who have already worked with Urban Sax across the world. A score with a detailed paCern is sent to each one : Each musician films and records himself according to the same pre requisites (full frontal image, with a white background, dressed in black). He then sends us image and sound so they can be integrated to the final score. The aim is to project their images during the final performance.

Phase 2 : We will offer , with the Quad sax group , a master class where saxophonists from Strasbourg and its surroundings will intervene regularly in different spots of the city (The Canals, Pe8te France, Parc de l’Orangerie, Europe, Place Kleber…)…. These interven8ons will create groups of musicians who will answer each other in different spots. Each group playing a part of the final score, thus becoming a pillar of the sound cathedral being built.

• We will create bridges linking both actual and web performances : Urban Sax virtual images will spring up in embossed 3D during the projec8ons taking place during the actual show, and messages emana8ng from the virtual world will appear over these projec8ons

19
The UrbanSaxVirtual concept rose from the wish to explore ar8s8c possibili8es in the field of the web’s virtual worlds. It was therefore possible for Internauts to become the incarna8on of an avatar and become immersed in a 3D web site (Internauts have the opportunity to stroll about a 4 stage architectural background surrounding the audience, in an exclusive 15 minute show)

It will be possible for members of the audience to join the show during the last minute. They will be informed they can download certain parts of the musical score and the performance of bells on their portable phone. At the end of the concert, their portable phone screen will then inform them of when they can set them off.

Then this would be the beginning of an endless loop on the internet with saxophonists from all over the world who could join the loop at any <me by sending their own interpreta<on of the sound and visual score. Each interpreta<on that is received will be inserted as it comes in the loop. From then on, another life starts for the Internet Project : each internaut saxophone Player who has the desire to become one part of the score will be able to film himself and send us his contribu<on. This will make Endless loop richer and richer as months go by.
