INTRODUCING TO ABS Wheel lockup during braking causes skidding which in turn cause a loss of traction and vehicle control.

This reduces the steering ability to change direction. So the car slides out of control.

With abs system driver can brake hard take the evasive action and still be in control of the vehicle in any road condition at any speed & load.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) is an automobile safety system that allows the wheels on a motor vehicle to maintain tractive contact with the road surface according to driver inputs while braking, preventing the wheels from locking up (ceasing rotation) and avoiding uncontrolled skidding……

Computerized ABS is designed to keep the wheels from locking as the brakes are applied….

ABS allows the driver to maintain steering control of the vehicle while in hard braking situations .

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM COMPONENTS

MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM CONSIST OF A FOUR PRIMARY COMPONENTS.• ABS controller• ABS speed sensor• ABS modulator/valves• ABS pumps

.

BRAIN OF THE SYSTEM.

The ABS controller or brake control module is a compute that receives information from the speed sensor and compares it to the speed of other wheels.

ABS CONTROLLER :-

Page 8: 2836 [autosaved]

2) ABS SPEED SENSOR :- there are generally one a each wheel (sometimes they are located on the differential).

it detects a change in acceleration in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle & outputs it to the ABSCM as a voltage signal.

Page 9: 2836 [autosaved]

some systems have separate valves for each wheel with a modulator to control them.

but in maruti they are combined.

in either case they work with the controller and the pump to add to release pressure from the individual wheels..

Page 10: 2836 [autosaved]

ABS PUMPS :-

The abs valves can release the pressure From the each wheels brakes there needs to be away to restore the pressure when required.that the what is ABS pumps job is.

When the pump is cycling a driver may experience slight a pedal viabration.

this cycling is happening many times per second & this slight viabration is natural…

How does ABS work ?SOLENOID VALVE ASSEMBLY:-

A) Increase pressureB) Hold pressure steadyC) Decrease pressure

TYPES OF ABS :-THERE IS MAINLY THREE TYPES OF ABS USED IN CARS :-

1) FOUR CHANNEL,FOUR SENSOR ABS :- This is the best scheme. there is a speed sensor on all four wheels and a separate valve for

all four wheels. With this setup the controller monitors each wheel individually to make sure it is achiving max braking force.

2) THREE CHANNEL,THREE SENSOR ABS :- this type commonly found in pickup trucks with four wheel ABS

has a speed sensor & a valve for each of the front wheels. This channel is with one valve & one sensor for both rear wheels. This speed sensor for the rear wheels is located in the rear axle.

Page 16: 2836 [autosaved]

1) ONE CHANNEL,ONE SENSOR ABS :- This system is commonly used in pickup trucks with rear wheel ABS . It has one valve which controls both rear valves. & one speed sensor Located in rear-axle.

Page 17: 2836 [autosaved]

ADVANTAGES OF ABS SYSTEM :- • It can be used for reducing the stopping distance.• It enables to steer while the brakes are firmly applied.• It allows braking firmly on surfaces with different level of grips.• It can review and adjust the driver’s driving

Page 18: 2836 [autosaved]

DISVANTAGES OF ABS SYSTEM :- Drivers may take more risks when driving with vehicles fitted with ABS.

• In exceptional circumstances, some drivers have the skill to stop the vehicle in a shorter distance than achieved by an ABS equipped vehicle.

• People who are inexperienced in using ABS may respond inappropriately when they activate the system.

WHEN DIAGNOSING AN ABS CONCERN ALWAYS1. Talk with customer/ owner, to deterring if the ABS

at fault or a basic brake system concern.

2. Always check the basic brake system 1st..

3. Check for proper tire size.

4. Check for damage sensor and reluctor rings.

5. Check brake light operation .

6. Check for diagnostic trouble codes.
