We are holding our annual Advent raffle for all of the parishioners and friends of St. Bernadette once again this year. Our fundraising efforts have been on pause since the spring and this raffle is a largely contact-free way to provide an additional opportunity for
you to support St. Bernadette Parish. Many of you have continued to support St. Bernadette through our weekly Sunday collection, even during the lockdown, and may simply prefer to continue to do so, we remind everyone that this is entirely voluntary. We will not be selling tickets after Masses this year, but they are available in the rectory. Prizes are the same as in previous years, with 5 early bird drawings in addition to the grand prize: Thanksgiving Day ..................................... $200 November 29 ............................................ $200 December 6 .............................................. $200 December 13 ............................................. $200 December 20 ............................................ $200 Christmas Eve grand prize ....................... $1,000 Thank you for all the ways you support St. Bernadette Parish.
The Giving Tree Names will be available on our Giving Tree starting the week of November 21-22. Tags on the tree have nameless identification cards of members of our own community who are in need, as well as women and children from the Courage Program in Oak Lawn and the birth-age 3 program in Evergreen Park. The tags list
gifts the individual would like for Christmas. We encourage you to take a tag and make Christmas special for someone this year.
Live Streaming Mass
This week, on Saturday at the 4:00 p.m. Mass, we will live stream our weekend Mass. Our plan is to live stream the 4:00 p.m. Saturday Mass each week and have it available on our website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel, just as we have been doing since the start of the pandemic with pre-recorded Sunday Masses. You can watch with us live at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, or any time later that week. (Recorded Masses will be kept for up to a
month.) We will also stream Masses for Holy Days of Obligation and other special events. Please be aware that if you do attend 4:00 p.m. Mass on any Saturday, you may appear in the stream.
Thanksgiving Day Mass
Every year we gather as a parish community to celebrate Thanksgiving Mass at 9:00 a.m. This year will be no exception. You are also encourage to bring donations of food for the Evergreen Park Food Pantry. However, rather than bring them to the altar during the Offering, we ask that you leave them in the vestibule when you arrive. We also ask that you sign up for this Mass (it has been added to our Sunday Mass sign up form available from our website). This Mass will also be streamed and posted to our website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel.

The Solemnity of Christ the King As we celebrate the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, many of the traditional hymns and images for the day are joyful and triumphal. For some, these connotations may be perceived as negative. In these days when there are strong divisions within the Church, and when some government leaders are so far away from the people, we need to hear all of today’s scriptures, and draw a bigger, fuller picture of Christ as servant king. In Ezekiel, we see God as both the tender, loving shepherd and the one who will judge at the Second Coming. This ties in with Matthew’s Gospel and separation of sheep and goats and “whatsoever you do.” We pray Psalm 23 with great familiarity and hope. First Corinthians carefully explains to us the order in which all will happen. This is not an evil dictatorship, or a power-hungry leader, but the culmination of a plan that was carefully laid out in love. Old Idea, Recent Addition Perhaps it is important to remember that while the image of Christ as King has been known throughout Christianity, this feast was founded in 1925 as a reaction and a response to growing secularism, communism, and atheism that were becoming prevalent after World War I. If we pull back the lens even further, we will remember that throughout history there has seldom been a
p e a c e f u l time in the C h r i s t i a n world. The Holy Land itself has f r e q u e n t l y been a battle g r o u n d . There have b e e n schisms and divisions in the history
of the church itself, and every church council was convened to try to correct some mistaken notion, world event, or church heresy. Nor has church leadership always had clean hands, and there have been wars, genocides, and insurrections “in the name of Christ.” Today, when more and more people are leaving organized religion altogether, and people identify themselves as “spiritual but not religious” or “nones,” the need for Christ as leader and ruler and guide is more pressing than ever. Inherit the Kingdom The world in which we live is complex. We are a diverse, global society and there are many issues and opinions ranging from climate change to politics to creed. Sometimes we try and sort it all out, and it is hard to know who and what to believe. One can find multiple takes on the same news story, and social media can easily sway us. Yet when we focus on the Gospel story, it seems very simple indeed. We do not have to know it all or figure it all out. We are not the one on the throne during the Last Judgment. When God starts separating the sheep from the goats, the formula is a simple rule of thumb. “When did you see Christ in others? When did you respond accordingly?” It does not ask if you are Catholic or even Christian; whether you had a police record or an incurable disease; whether you had a PhD or a fifth-grade education, or what languages you spoke. The call is to remember that “Whatsoever you did to the least you did for me.” And then there will be the invitation, “Come you who are blessed. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” Today’s Readings: Ez 34:11–12, 15–17; Ps 23:1–2, 2–3, 5–6; 1 Cor 15:20–26, 28; Matt 25:31–46 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

I would like to remind you once again of the rules we follow here at St Bernadette for worship. While the term “rules” may sound a bit harsh, they are the best practices we are following to keep this virus from spreading within the walls of this community. Since it has been a few months that we have reopened, I would like to remind you of the following and why: •It is important that you reserve your seat in advance for several reasons, first we are limited in the number of people who can have at a Mass. In the event that a person who had attended Mass where to have been diagnosed with COVID, it would be this list we would use to notify those people at that particular Mass/prayer service of such. Lastly, a simple check off of your name upon entering Mass prevents a hold up of the line.
•Hand sanitizer stations are at each entrance and are required to be used by each person upon entering the church and at Communion.
•Assigned Seating is set up to allow people to fill the church from the front to the back, While I realize some of us are comfortable in our “preferred seating” it really is nice to see our church from a different view. More importantly this seating plan prevents cross contamination when a person walks past you who is already seated. Please do not exit the church until the ushers have asked you to exit using the center aisle. There should be no persons leaving Mass using the side rows.
•Face masks-once again, we ask that all people entering Mass are wearing a face mask and it remains in place throughout the entire time. The mask needs to cover both your mouth and your nose as it works to prevent the spread of germs. At no time, other than Communion, should the mask be removed. Remember, the wearing of a mask is preventing any of your microbes from being spread to another person. So be kind & considerate of your pew neighbors. If you find it hard to wear a mask, then perhaps your best bet for your own health and well being for now, is to participate at Mass from home.

Call to Pray
The Archdiocese of Chicago is introducing a service for people who would like to pray with someone rather than on their own. They are available at 312-741-3388 or by email: praywithme@calledtoprayer.org

Spiritual Communion
While the church gradually reopens, we are nonetheless painfully aware that not everyone is able to join us yet. Being cut off from the sacramental life of the church, especially the Eucharist, creates a great hardship for the Church and Her people. We remind everyone unable to join us in person, but participating spiritually, to do the best they can to practice spiritual communion and to use this prayer in the absence of the Eucharist: “My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.”

The Stewardship Prayer
My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. It will be holy, if I am.
Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will be prayerful, if I pray.
It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring others into its worship, if I invite and bring them.
It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all the
things that I want my parish to be. Amen.
