Subject Pronouns

Subject Pronouns In French, a subject pronoun is immediately or

almost immediately followed by its verb.

The use of subject pronouns is mandatory in French.

Always use a subject pronoun to construct sentences in the absence of a noun subject.

On The pronoun on has no direct equivalent in English.

It can mean we. It can mean they, as in people in general. It can mean one.

The meaning of on will depend on the context.

     En France, on parle français.        In France, they (people in general) speak French. 

il/elle

Il and elle besides meaning 'he' and 'she' can both express the meaning 'it' depending on the gender of the noun being replaced.

For example:

La chaise est bleue, n'est-ce pas?

The chair is blue, isn't it?

Non, elle est noire! No, it's black!

De quelle couleur est le tableau?

What color is the board?

Il est blanc. It is white.

Replacing with Subject Pronouns

Replacing with Subject Pronouns Sometimes, instead of using noun subjects, a

subject pronoun will be used.

For example, instead of saying Bob is at school. Bob is going to his classes.

One might say: Bob is at school. He is going to his classes.

The noun subject “Bob” has been replaced by the subject pronoun “he”.
