Vice President Mike Pence’sefforts to keep North

Korea from stealing the showat the Winter Olympics provedto be short-lived, quicklydrowned out by the images ofthe two Koreas marching andcompeting together, as theSouth appeared to look favor-ably on warming ties on theKorean Peninsula.

Pence spent the days lead-ing up to the games warningthat the North was trying to“hijack the message andimagery of the OlympicGames” with its “propaganda.”But the North was still wel-comed with open arms to whatSouth Korean President MoonJae-in called “Olympic games ofpeace” and the US appeared tobe the one left out in the cold.

Moon was all smilesSaturday as he greeted Kim YoJong, the sister of North Koreandictator Kim Jong Un, andKim Yong Nam, the country’s90-year-old nominal head ofstate, for lunch at the presi-dential residence. Kim Yo Jongoffered an invitation from herbrother for Moon to visit theNorth, in the strongest sign yetof an expanding diplomaticopening opposed by the US.

Pence said Friday that theUS would oppose talksbetween the two Koreas until

the North agreed to open nego-tiations on ending its nuclearprogram, and he was silentSaturday on the news of theinvitation.

“The Vice-President isgrateful that President Moonreaffirmed his strong commit-ment to the global maximumpressure campaign and for hissupport for continued sanc-tions,” Pence spokeswomanAlyssa Farah said when askedabout the development.

Moon and Pence spokeSaturday whiletaking in thespeedskatingcompetit ion,but aides didnot immediate-ly say whetherthe invitationcame up duringthe discussion.

At theopening cere-monies onFriday, Pencesat stone-facedin his seat asMoon andNorth Koreanofficials stoodtogether withmuch of thestadium toapplaud theirjoint team ofathletes. WhiteHouse officials

stressed that Pence hadapplauded only for theAmerican team, but Asiaexperts said the vice president’srefusal to stand could be seenas disrespectful to the hosts.

US officials have been urg-ing South Korea to be cautiousin its rapprochement with theNorth — a point Pence drilledhome in private meetings withMoon on Thursday.

But North Korea’s terriblerecord on human rights and thegrowing threat from its nuclear

weapons program appearedout of mind.

Even Japanese PrimeMinister Shinzo Abe, who hasshared the American skepti-cism of warming inter-Koreanrelations and pressed Moonagainst falling for the North's“smile diplomacy,” greeted KimYong Nam. Pence arrived lateand stayed for just five minutes— and did not interact with thedelegation from the North —at a Friday VIP reception fordelegation leaders.

North Korean leader KimJong Un invited the South’s

President Moon Jae-in for asummit in Pyongyang onSaturday, Seoul said, even as theUS warned against falling forPyongyang’s Olympic charmoffensive. The invitation, deliv-ered by Kim’s visiting sisterKim Yo Jong, said Kim waswilling to meet the South’sleader “at the earliest date pos-sible”, said a spokesman for thepresidential Blue House.

An inter-Korean summitwould be the third of its kind, after Kim’s father and prede-cessor Kim Jong Il met theSouth’s Kim Dae-jung and RohMoo-hyun in 2000 and 2007respectively, both of them inPyongyang.

Moon did not immediate-ly accept the invitation. But theprospect could sow divisionbetween the dovish leader, whohas long argued for engage-ment with the nuclear-armedNorth to bring it to the nego-tiating table, and US President

Donald Trump, who last yeartraded personal insults andthreats of war with Kim.

Washington insists thatPyongyang — which is undermultiple sets of UN SecurityCouncil sanctions — must takeconcrete steps towards denu-clearisation before any negoti-ations can happen.

After months of silence onwhether it would even take partin the Pyeongchang WinterOlympics in the South, theGames have driven a rap-prochement on the peninsula.

President Donald Trump hasfor now stopped the release

of the Democrats’ counter-memo, rebutting Republicanassertions over the FederalBureau of Investigation’s “bias”and “surveillance abuses” tar-geting a former Trump cam-paign aide as part of its probeof Russian meddling in the2016 US presidential election.

In a letter to the HouseIntelligence Committee, WhiteHouse Counsel DonaldMcGahn said although thePresident is “inclined to declas-sify” the Democratic memo, heis “unable to do so at this time”because it contains “numerousproperly classified and espe-cially sensitive passages”.

He went on to say that theJustice Department had identi-fied portions of the Democrats’memo that it believed “wouldcreate especially significantconcerns for the national secu-rity and law enforcement inter-ests” if disclosed.

Trump, however, directedthe Justice Department to giveany technical assistance thecommittee might need to revisethe memo to “mitigate therisks identified by theDepartment”, McGahn said, adding, “The President encour-ages the Committee to under-take these efforts.”

Democrats reactedpromptly and sharply, withHouse Minority Leader NancyPelosi calling it a “stunninglybrazen attempt to cover up thetruth about the Trump-Russiascandal from the Americanpeople”, adding, “Why won’t thePresident put our countrybefore his personal and polit-ical interests?”

Senate Minority LeaderChuck Schumer contrastingTrump’s blocking of theirmemo to the go-ahead given tothe Republican memo last weekand commenting, “ThePresident’s double standardwhen it comes to transparen-cy is appalling.”

Congressman Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the HouseIntelligence Committee andauthor of the memo, alsoslammed Trump’s “double stan-dard”. Nonetheless, theDemocrats on the committee

will confer with the JusticeDepartment and the FBI to“determine how we can prop-erly inform the American peo-ple about the misleading attackon law enforcement by theGOP and address any concernsover sources and methods”.

“We hope this matter canquickly be resolved so thecommittee can return to itscharge – fully investigating theRussian interference in ourelection and the role of theTrump campaign, and whatsteps need to be taken to pro-tect against foreign interferencein the next election, now onlymonths away,” Schiff said in astatement.

The Republican memo thatwas made public last weekafter getting the presidentialnod had accused the FBI ofsuppressing Democratic tiesto an opposition researchdossier on Trump and Russiathat was used to procure aForeign IntelligenceSurveillance Act warrantagainst former Trump cam-paign aide Carter Page. Thatled to the Democratic push topublish their own 10-pagecounter-memo, accusing theRepublicans of misleading andomitting key facts.
