As part of the RLR (Roman Limes Route) and LIDOR (Limes Dacicus Orientalis) projects geophysical

and topographical survey took place in the retentura of the auxiliary fort from Brncoveneti. In the presentpaper, based on the recent results, we made an attempt to corroborate all the available archaeological data,

georeference the former excavations and propose a 3D visualisation model of the fort.

Keywords: Roman, auxiliary ort, survey, magnetometry, medieval church

In 2011 and 2012 at the initiative o the Mure County Museum in the ramework o theRLR (Roman Limes Route)and LIDOR (Limes Dacicus Orientalis) projects (V 2008; 2009a;2009b; S 2009; P . 2011) geophysical and topographical survey took place

in the retenturao the Roman auxiliary ort rom Brncoveneti in Mure County (HungarianMarosvcs). Te Roman ort rom Brncoveneti is one o the best known sites (Pl. 1/1) o theeastern border o the Dacian provinces (related to the research history o the site, see: P1944, 2326; PZ 1994a; 1994b; L 1995, 8488; G 1997, 5657; P

. 2010, 106107). Due to the location in the Mure Valley, beyond the Deda pass, on a highterrace with an altitude varying rom 337 m to 431 m next to the right riverbank, it had amajor strategic importance (Pl. 2/12). Linked probably to the orts o Orheiu Bistriei (Bistria-Nsud County) and Clugreni (Mure County) by the eastern limesroad and relying on thenatural deence offered by the Climani and Gurghiu Mountains combined with a system o

watchtowers and deensive structures situated towards the barbaricum (P 1944, 2627;FP 1982, 568584; PZ 1994a, ; FP 1994; 1995;P .2011) this ort had the role to control the border section around the upper Mure

valley leading towards east, to the Gheorgheni Plateau (PZ 1994a, 12).Te site is known as Castel and Cetate and is located on the north-eastern periphery

o the village (PZ 1994a, 1). On the south-eastern part o the ort (mainly thepretentura dextra) a medieval ortification was built, which was converted into the Renaissancecastle owned later by the Kemny amily (Pl. 1/2). Te auxiliary buildings o the ormer estateand the buildings o the hospital presently unctioning on the property seriously damaged theremains o thepretenturaand the latus praetoriio the ort (Pl. 2/3).

Te first excavations at the site were conducted in 1847 by N (1851, 251) ollowedby small scale evaluation slots made under the supervision o Paulovics in 1942 (P 1944,25, ootnote 25). Te first systematic excavations started in 1970 and continued until 1982 underthe scientific supervision o Protase and Zrnyi (except or the years 19741975, when no excava-

tions took place in the military ort). Te results o the excavations were presented in preliminaryreports (PZ ; P ; R 1977; PZ 1978; 1992; 1993)and in a monographic publication (PZ 1994a; 1994b).

Based on a synthesis o the excavations made by the researchers (PZ 1994a;1994b) and later by G (1997, 5657) we know that the ort had three major building phases.Te first one, the timber ort, was oriented roughly towards the cardinal points, it had a rectan-gular shape and a 10 m wide and 1.20 m high earth rampart with a 57 m wide and 1.5 m deepV shaped ditch. Tis phase has been dated to the reign o rajan, but the exact extent o the ortand the military unit which built it has not been established yet. It is presumed that it was built

by the same unit and with the same extent as the stone ort rom the second phase (PZ 1994a, ). Te rectangular stone ort with rounded corners had the same orientationas the previous one with a 1 m wide stone wall built in opus incertumtechnique. Te ort hadroughly 2.5 ha surace and sides measuring 144 m respectively 177 m. Beside the two gates, the

porta principalis sinistraand the porta decumana(only partially excavated), a building in thelatus sinistrum, without any clear evidence related to its unction, was excavated. In the retenturapossible remains o timber buildings (barracks and stalls?) have been identified (PZ1994a, 7273). Te ort had in this phase two ditches, the first was 9 m wide and 2.5 m deep, thesecond 8 m wide and 2 m deep. On theeastern side (towards the slope o the river valley) no sign

o these ditches have been observed. Based on tile stamps and inscriptions it is thought that acavalry unit, theAla I Numeri Illyricorum (see discussion at M 2009, 119120) was stationedin the ort. Te last phase is a major reparation phase dated to the middle o the 3rdcentury AD,but it still has to be clarified whether the external buttresses attached to the western precinct wallcan be linked to this phase or these could be the result o an earlier intervention. Te latest coinsrom the ort come rom the reign o Gordian III and Philippus Arabs (PZ 1994a,53, 7374), so probably not long afer this period the control o the area was lost.

Usually, in the publications, two versions o the plan illustrating these excavations are tobe ound. Te first (plan A) version (Pl. 3/1), with some variants is used almost in each publi-cation (see or instance PZ 1975, pl. 25; P 1977, 380, fig. ; PZ

    1992, pl. 1; PZ 1994a, pl. 25; G 1997, 57, nr. 32; M 2009, 292, pl. 24; P . 2010, 122, Abb. 67), but rom topographic point o view it is not accurate enough. Te

three still existing buildings and the deensive ditch o the medieval castle are roughly indicatedin this plan, but their inaccuracy did not allow us to use them or georeerencing. Te second(plan B) version (Pl. 3/2) appears only in the final publication (PZ 1994a, pl. 26)and even though it lacks many o the archaeological details or instance the deensive ditches othe ort or the remains o the medieval chapel/s are not listed , the topographic data (truncationlines, altitude lines, several still existing buildings) offers a much better dataset or georeerencing.Te incoherence between the two plans has to be taken into account.

Afer the digitalisation and reinterpretation o the old plans concerning phasing and sitepreservation (Pl. 3) the georeerencing o plan B was done (Pl. 4/1) based on the still existinglandmark eatures. In the plans all the evaluation trenches have been marked with Arab numbersand not with Roman numbers like in the initial publications. o veriy this dataset a geomagneticsurvey has been carried out in the retentura, located in the orchard o the ormer estate, in anarea where the measurements were less disturbed by modern interventions. An area o 1.2 ha wascovered by measurements made in a grid with 1 m spacing using an Overhauser Gradiometer.

Trough the geophysical data (Pl. 4/2) many o the old excavation trenches could be located withhigh accuracy (e.g. trenches 1, 7, 16 and 18 are visible as grey sections in Pl. 5/1), but in somecases a slight shif in their position proved that not even plan B had a high topographic accuracy.Concerning the archaeological eatures, due to the measurements (Pl. 5/1) in the retenturatheremains o via decumanaand possibly, via quintanawere located. In the retentura sinistra, runningparallel with the robbed deensive wall o the ort the scarce remains o a masonry structure(building?), or more probably two roads were located. Te one next to the precinct wall mayhave been via sagularis. Outside the ort three massive deensive ditches were identified at regulardistances running parallel with the precinct wall. I they are contemporary or not it is diffi cult

to establish, but based on the dataset offered by ormer excavations we did not know about theexistence o a third ditch. Te appearance o the ditches is slightly different rom the other struc-tures in the area, because they have a continuous character, while the other structures look morerugged. Tis uneven look is due to the construction material, which was mainly andesite, andthis mineral is strongly magnetized, thereore the larger blocks appear as individual anomalies.Te ditches were probably filled uniormly which results in a smoother look. In the area west othe ditches many magnetic anomalies appear, which suggest that the area had many masonrystructures, probably belonging to the roman vicus. However, the original structures were ruinedby the modern agriculture, because the stone ragments were piled up on the edges o the lines

where the trees in the orchard were planted (Pl. 4/2).In the retentura, partly covering via decumanaa building with slightly different orien-tation in comparison with the Roman structures could be identified. Tis building appears as aconcentration o strong anomalies, but its shape is diffi cult to define accurately. Te building isoriented clearly east-west and on the same place the ormer excavations ound inhumation gravestogether with the remains o two unerary crypts (PZ 1994a, 7). Tis area was theamily graveyard o the Kemny amily until the middle o the 20thcentury (P 1944,25). On the first Austrian military survey o ransylvania (Pl. 5/2) rom the early 18 thcentury, beside the still existing protestant church, a second church is shown in the vicinity o the castle. We can presume that this second church was the chapel o the landlords used by the members o

the estate and the tradition to bury their relatives next to it continued even afer this church orchapel was razed to the groundsometimes during the 18thcentury.

Based on the corroborated archaeological data a 3D model has been made (Pl. 6) as anarchitectural volumetric study. Te purpose o this visualization method is to show the positionand the dimensions o the ort in relation to the topography o the site. We reconstructed onlythe deensive walls and the gates without construction details and textures, but it has to be under-lined, that they could have been considerably higher. From the interior o the ort except the mainroads we do not have enough evidence to reconstruct the internal structure, nor do we have dataabout the triple ditch running all around the ort although we reconstructed it as such.
