    Shoden Mudras

    Gassho Mudra Gesture of Respect and Humility

    Other Names: Anjali, Namaskra, or Namaste Mudra, Humility

    Gesture. Mudra of Avolokitesvara and Yama.

    Purpose: Represents prayer; respect and humility; worship,

    adoration: reverence and sincerity. Represents the firm and

    sincere heart. Symbolically it means My Soul bows to your

    Soul or My Soul recognizes the Divinity within You

    Namaste. Helps to unify the body and mind and promotes

    right concentration. Through its use we transcend the duality of

    heaven and hell and come to the realization of harmony of body

    and mind. Will calm the body and mind when one has become scattered or

    distracted. Its use, even briefly, can break the hold of seeming frantic circumstances

    and give a new perspective.

    Uses in Reiki: Used during Reiju and the attunement process. Used to begin and end

    most techniques as a sign of prayerful respect and honour of the system, the energy,the client and all creation. Good to make over your food, work, mistakes, and

    situations where you must collect yourself in a state of single mindedness and

    reverence.

    To Make: Place both hands together palms touching fingers/thumbs extended

    upward (prayer position). Fingers should not be spread.

    Shoden Techniques

    Kenyoku-ho The traditional method of dry bathing or brushing off

    A technique, which will help to cleanse and enhance your energy field while

    disconnecting you from outside influences. A literal translation of Kenyoku is dry

    bath. Ken means, drought, dry, drink up, heaven, emperor; Yoku means, bathe, be

    favoured with , bask in; and ho means, technique, method or way. This is an

    original technique from Usui.

    The Technique:

    1. Sit or stand comfortably.2. Gassho, calm the mind and say silentlyI begin Dry Bath Now (kenyoku-ho).3. Place your right-hand fingertips near the top of the left shoulder (where

    collarbone and shoulder meet.) Hand is flat, palm toward body. Note: Taking

    in a breath before each sweep and releasing at the end can help to release

    excess energy from the aura.

    4. Move the hand downward in a diagonal line, from left shoulder to right hip.5. Repeat movements with left hand, on the right side of body. Move hand

    downward in a diagonal line, from right shoulder to left hip.

    6. Do movements 3 and 4 again (right hand on left side of body).7. Now place the right hand on the middle of the left forearm, palm down, hand

    flat, fingertips pointing outwards (Hand can be placed on the shoulder instead

    of the forearm)8. Move the right hand, down the arm, to the fingertips, all the while keeping the

    left arm straight and horizontal to the floor in front of you. Shake hand gently

    to release accumulated energy.

    9. Repeat movements with left hand on the right arm.10.Do movements 7 and 8 again (right hand on left arm)11.Gassho and give thanks.

    Hikari no Kokyu-ho (also called Joshin Kokyu-ho) The traditional methodfor breathing of the Light.

    A technique, which will reduce stress, purify mind, body and spirit. In time, use of

    this technique will enhance your own energy and gather it at the Tanden. A literal

    translation of Hakari no Kokyu ho is method for breathing in Light. Hikari means,

    light, ray; Kokyu means. breath, respiration; and ho means, technique, method or

    way. This is an original technique from Usui.

    The Technique:

    1. Sit in a comfortable position, hands on lap, palms up, relaxed fingers. Closeyour eyes and breathe slowly.

    2. Gasho, calm the mind and say silentlyI begin breathing Light tecnique now(hikari no Kokyu-ho)

    3. Reach your hand as high as possible above your head and connect to thefullness of Reiho energy.

    4. Slowly move hands back to the lap, palms up, fingers relaxed. Feel your breathflowing naturally and slowly while you focus on your hara (or tanden); relax.

    5. While breathing in visualize the Light of Reiki (or white Light) entering yourcrown chakra moving to your hara and expanding until your whole body is

    filled with Reiki Light. Dissolving all tensions, anxiety and stress completely.

    On the out breath visualize the light of Reiki expanding beyond your skin,

    filling your aura and then out to infinity in every direction.

    6. Repeat for a couple of minutes or as long as you like.7. Gasho and give thanks. Shake the hands up and down. Back and forth.

    Reiki Undo A breathing exercise with movement

    An exercise, which will release stress and tension in the body. Movement is combined

    with Hikari no Kokyu-ho. Breathing; can be done alone or with a partner. A literal

    translation of Reiki Undo is spiritual energy exercise. Undo means motion,

    exercise. Ms. Koyama developed this exercise.

    The Technique:

    1. Sit or stand in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and breathe slowly2. Gassho, calm the mind and say silently, I now begin Reiki Undo3. Reach your hands as high as possible above your head and ask for the fullness

    of Reiho to come through you.

    4. Lower your hands, rlax and begin the breathing technique. Allow your body tomove any way that it will. (when working with a partner, stand in back of

    them and place your hands on their shoulders.)

    5. As you breathe in, begin releasing all the stress and tension from your body.On the other breath. Let it go completely away from you

    6. Your body may begin to move after a few of these releasing breaths. Dontforce it, just allow. Relax and let go. Have patience and be kind to yourself;

    movements will come in time.

    7. Do this exercise as long as you like.8. Gassho and give thanks. Shake the hands up and down, back and forth.9. Repeat every day for a minimum of three months.

    Gassho kokyu-ho The traditional method of breathing through the hands(concentration breath)

    A technique for clearing your mind and connecting to higher levels of consciousness

    while remaining grounded. A literal translation of Gassho Koku is hand breathing.

    Gassho means pressing ones hands together in prayer; Kokyu means, breath,

    respiration; and ho means. Technique, method or way. This is an original technique

    from Usui.

    The Technique:

    1. Sit or stand comfortably. Close your eyes and breathe slowly2. Gassho, calm the mind and say silentlyI begin Traditional breathing through

    hands (Gassho Kokyu-ho) now

    3. Reach your hands as high as possible above your head and connect to thefullness of Reiho energy.

    4. Slowly move hands back to Gassho. Feel your breath flowing naturally andslowly focus the mind on the Hara, Relax

    5. Begin to Visualize that you are breathing through your hands.6. While breathing in, Visualize Reiki (or white light) entering your hands and

    flowing down to the hara, expanding until the hara is filled with Reiki. On the

    out breath. Visualize light moving from the hara to the hands filling them with

    Reiki, then releasing in a burst in all directions.

    7. Repeat for a couple of minutes or as long as you like.8. Give thanks and shake the hands up and down, back and forth.

    Gassho Mediation A mediation technique with concentration on the hands.

    A mediation technique to calm and focus the mind. Can be done in the morning or

    evening. This technique comes from Frank Arjava Petter.

    The Technique:

    1. Sit in a chair or on the floor; be comfortable. Close your eyes and breatheslowly

    2. Gassho, calm the mind and say silentlyI begin Gassho Meditation Now3. Keep hands in Gassho at heart level. Breathe naturally and slowly focusing the

    mind on the point where the tips of your middle fingers come together. Feel

    your body relaxing and your mind letting go of the outside world.

    4. If you become uncomfortable, gently move your hands into your lap keepingthem in Gassho with your mind focused on the point between your fingertips.

    5. Continue the meditation for 20-30 minutes.6. When complete, give thanks and shake hands up and down, back and forth.

    Nentatsu-ho - The Traditional method for sending a thought or wish.

    A technique for getting a message across to the recipients subconscious mind with

    Reiki. It is a helpful technique to reprogram the mind (i.e. such as the removal of a

    bad habit). This technique has many uses like: stopping bad habits, over-coming

    illness, achieving goals, learning the 5 Principles (or anything of importance to you),

    ETC And can be incorporated into your daily Reiki Self-Treatments.

    A literal translation of Nentatsu ho is method for discontinuing a concern. Nenmeans. sense, idea, thought, feeling, desire, concern, attention, care; Tatsu means,

    discontinue, beyond, sever, cut off, abstain, interrupt, suppress; and ho is,

    technique, method, or way. This is an original technique from Usui.

    The Technique:

    1. Determine what it is you wish to work on. Crate simple, clear, affirmations inpresent tense as if it were already your reality (i.e. I am my perfect weight of

    ____ pounds, I look great, I feel great, I am light, my muscles are toned and

    fit, I am healthy, vital and energized).

    2. Sit or lie down, be comfortable. Close your eyes and breathe slowly3. Gassho, calm the mind and say silentlyI begin Sending a thought or wish

    (nentatsu-ho) Now.

    4. Place one hand on your forehead (over the 3rd eye area) the other hand on theback of the head (over the medulla oblongata or indentation at the base of the

    skull).5. With a pure intent, call upon Reiki and ask that you be rid of the

    habit/condition (achieve your goal, memory retention, etc.). Repeat your

    affirmations as you hold this position. Do this for several minutes. Remember

    this is not about mind control; it is simply allowing Reiki to bring you to

    wholeness.

    6. Remove the hand from forehead, keeping other in place. Meditate on perfectPeace or your Divine Perfection seeing yourself as you would be if you were

    rid of the condition (or as if you had achieved your goal). Do this for several

    more minutes.

    7. Gassho and give thanks.

    Jakikiri Joka-ho The traditional method of purifying negative energy

    A technique to remove strong negative or misqualified energy and restore positive

    energy with Reiki. The literal translation of Jakikiri Joka is to purify negative energy

    by cutting. Ja means. bad, wicked, negative; Ki means energy ; Kiri means, cut,

    cut-off, be sharp; Joka means. purification, cleanse, exorcise, This is an original

    technique from Usui.

    The Technique;

    This technique is only to be done on inanimate objects (crystals, stones, jewelry, a

    house, car, water, etc). Never do this procedure on a living sentient being

    (Plant, animal, bird, human, ETC)

    1. Stand or sit comfortably. Breathe slowly and naturally focus your attention onyour Tanden.

    2. Gassho and say silentlyI do Purifying Negative Energy Method (JakikiriJoka-ho) now

    3. For small objects: Hold the object in your non-dominant hand, with yourdominant hand chop the space 2 inches above the object sharply. Repeat 2

    more times. (Three in total). Give the object reiki till it feels full, then chop the

    space above the object sharply again 3 times to seal out negative energy.

    4. For larger objects: Chop the space 2 inches above the object sharply. Repeat 2more times (Three in total). Give the object Reiki till it feels full, then chop the

    space above the object sharply again 3 times to seal out negative energy.5. For Very Large Objects Like a house: visualize the object small enough to fit in

    your hand and chop the space 2 inches above the object sharply. Repeat w

    more times. Give the object Reiki till it feels full, then chop the space above

    the object sharply again 3 times to seal out negative energy

    6. NOTE: while chopping focus your attention on your Tanden and hold yourbreath.

    7. Gassho and give thanks.

    Reiki Shower A technique for cleansing the body and creasing energy withReiki.

    A technique for showering yourself in Reiki energy, cleansing the body and

    increasing your energy. This technique comes from Mr. Doi.

    The technique:

    1. Stand or sit comfortably. Close or half close your eyes. Breathe slowly andnaturally without conscious attention.

    2. Gassho, clam the mind and say silentlyI begin Reiki Shower now3. Move hands as high as possible above your head, keeping them apart. Connect

    to the Reiki energy.

    4. Visualize that you are receiving a shower or Reiki over and through your body.5.

    Feeling the fullness of Reiki energy, slowly move your hands down to the frontof your body palms facing you. Your hands are bathing you in beautiful Reiki-

    Light energy, cleansing all unnecessary energies down toward the ground. All

    misqualified (negative) energies are moved down your body and out the feet.

    6. Do this several times, Reiki is energizing your cells and filling your entirebody.

    7. When you are done Gassho and give thanks. You may notice that Reiki isintensely emanating from your eyes, mouth and hands.

    Chakra Kassei Kokyu-ho (Chakra Breathing)- A breathing technique toactivate the chakras

    A technique which sends Reiki to the whole body and activates the chakras. A literal

    translation of Chakra Kassei Kokyu ho is breathing method to activate the chakras.

    Kassei means. active or activate; Kokyu means, breath, respiration; and ho means,

    Technique, method or way. This technique comes from Mr. Doi.

    The Technique:

    This is the basic Breathing pattern.

    1. Stand, sit or lie down; Be comfortable; close your eyes. Breathe slowly andnaturally.

    2. Gassho. Move your hands as high as possible above your head. Feel thevibrations of Reiki light flushing into your entire body.

    3. Move hands slowly onto your lap, keep eyes closed. Breathe in slowly whileabdomen expands and out as it contracts (abdomen breathing). Do this until

    you feel calm and relaxed.4. While you breathe in visualize that Reiki is entering your crown chakra (top of

    your head) and filling every cell of your body your entire body is filled with

    light. While you breathe out, see all tension, anxiety, and negative thoughts

    exiting with your breath.

    5. In the beginning, practice the basic breathing pattern of 1-root, 4-heart, 7-crown.

    a. Breathe in energy from the Root (base of spine/tailbone) move it to theheart chakra; feel it for a moment. Then breathe out the heart chakra

    (centre of the chest between breasts), flushing the energy out form the

    heart centre in all directions.

    b. Breathe in energy from all directions into the heart chakra; move it tothe crown chakra (top of head); feel it for a moment. Then breathe out

    the crown, flushing the energy out in all directions.

    c. Breathe in energy from the crown, move it to the heart chakra, feel itfor a moment. The breathe out the heart chakra, flushing the energy out

    in all directions.

    d. Breathe in energy from all directions into the heart chakra, move it tothe root, feel it for a moment. Then breathe out the root, flushing the

    energy out in all directions.

    Do this exercise 3 times before you move to step 6 (this breathing pattern activates

    The root, heart and crown chakras).

    6. The breathing will activate each chakra. The method is the same as the basicmethod above.

    a. Breathe in energy from the root (base of spine/tailbone). Move it to thechakra you are working with; feel it for a moment. Then breathe out

    from the chakra, flushing the energy out in all directions.

    b. Breathe energy from all directions into the chakra you are workingwith. Move it to the crown chakra (top of head); feel it for a moment.

    Then breathe out the crown. Flushing the energy out in all directions.

    c. Breathe in energy from the crown, move it to the chakra you areworking with; feel it for a moment. Then breathe out from that chakra,flushing the energy out in all directions.

    d. Breathe energy from all directions into the chakra you are workingwith. Move it to the root; feel it for a moment. Then breathe out the

    root, flushing the energy out in all directions.

    You will be doing a breathing pattern like this: 1-root, 4-heart, 7-crown (3

    times); then 1-root, 2-sacrel, 7-crown; then 1- root, 3 solar plexus, 7-crown;

    then 1-root, 5-throat, 7-crown; then 1-root, 6-third eye, 7-crown.

    7. Now repeat the basic exercise one more time 1-root, 4-heart, 7-crown.8. When you are finished, Gassho and give thanks. You may be very relaxed and

    fall asleep when you awaken, shake hands up and down and side to side.

    9. If time is limited you may only wish to do the basic exercise.
