In Fecamp, Manet painted together with Berthe Morisot, his future wife. Degas then joined them there and completed his famous portrait of Manet. As for Monet, he often visited his elder brother who happened to have a villa in Les Petites Dalles. He liked to paint the cliffs in Dieppe, at any hour and during all weathers!

Étretat and its surroundings · With its tall cliffs, Etretat is rather diffi cult to get to. It is precisely this that attracted painters such as Delacroix, then Monet and his friend Courbet, who would later go on to make them famous. So passionate about painting, Monet worked on several paintings at a time. It was also here that Courbet painted his famous paintings of waves. Other painters, such as Boudin, were more interested in painting pictures of beach-goers.

Rouen · Situated on the Seine, midway between Paris and the coast, Rouen attracted a lot of painters: Gericault, Delacroix, Bonington, Turner, Jongkind, Pinchon, Huet, Corot, Lebourg, Frechon, Gaugin and even Pissarro, who was more of a lover of the countryside. Monet pain-ted the port, the sailing boats along the river...and thirty views of the cathedral! But the real subject of his painting was the ever-changing nature of the weather.
La Bouille and the banks of the Seine · The Seine did not cease to inspire Corot, Jongkind, Lebourg, Boudin, Monet, Sisley, Pissarro...They were all fascinated by both the colour of the wa-ter and the sky, their lighting and their ever-changing refl ections. Sisley and Lebourg worked together in La Bouille and Sahurs. With a single gust of wind portrayed in the painting of the Seine, Sisely was able to highlight the lapping of the water and the shaking of the leaves.
Giverny and Eure · In 1890, Monet bought a property in Giverny where he often invited his friends to come and visit. It was here that he painted numerous pictures of the water lilies in his pond where the colours just seemed to disappear into the light. The landscapes in Eure also inspired him, in the same way that Chateau Gaillard inspired Turner and Daubi-gny, Gisors inspired Corot and Saint-Denis-le-Ferment and Bazincourt greatly infl uenced Pissarro.

Honfl eur · Situated between the sea and the countryside, as a fi shing and commercial port, Honfl eur inspired painters thanks to its natural surroundings and its picturesque houses. In the hills of Honfl eur, the Saint-Simeon inn soon became a popular hide-out for painters: Boudin, Jongkind, Monet, Courbet and Daubigny all used to meet there. Monet painted a snow covered road in Honfl eur and
Millet completed some magnifi cent pastel works of the sky.

Caen and its surroundings · In 1821, Bonington, an Englishman, completed a great journey in Normandy. On the Nacre coast, he did a sketch of a beach which would later become ‘Near Ouistreham,’ his fi rst famous oil painting. Along with Turner, he painted Caen’s most important monuments: churches including Saint-Sauveur, Saint Etienne, Saint Pierre and Saint Gilles.

Port-en-Bessin / Grandcamp · Seurat spent several summers in Calvados where, as a child, he used to spend his holidays. He
painted Port en Bessin, Honfl eur, Grandchamp...He taught his friends Signac and Angrand the technique of Pointillism, a tech-nique inspired by Impressionism which consists of juxtaposing small dots of pure colour on the canvas, instead of mixing them
together on the palette.

Mortain et ses environs sauvages intéressent Géricault, qui y passe ses vacances depuis son enfance, et aussi Corot, Huet, Courbet...Argentan and Orne · When Degas was young, he spent three weeks in Orne and discovered the Haras du Pin and the Argentan racecourse. It was here that he painted his fi rst racehorse, a sub-ject which would later become one of the most iconic images in his paintings. Alencon attracted painters who had fallen in love with medieval patrimony, such as Corot and Cotman who had also painted the city of Domfront. Mortain and its wild surroundings captured the interest of Corot, Huet, Courbet and especially Gericault, who had spent many of his childhood holidays there.Ed

Cherbourg and Northern Cotentin · Millet was born and raised in Gruchy in the north of Cotentin, and he learnt to paint in Cherbourg.
Although he was a rather ‘realist’ artist, a number of his works fell under the umbrella of Impressionism. Throughout his lifetime he
painted the countryside and the countrymen of his local area. The wild and tamer landscapes also attracted the interest of Guillemet
and Boudin who decided to paint in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, or Signac and Valtat in the beautiful port of Barfl eur.

Mont-Saint-Michel · Cotman was the fi rst to be interested in Mont-Saint-Michel, followed by Turner and Coro. These Impressionists fi nally turned their back on this landscape. However, when it came to the turn of the Neo-Impressionists, they were thoroughly interested in it. Valtat and Signac, for example, produced fi ve works of Mont-Saint-Michel under fi ve different types of lighting. Assuming that they intended to use the idea behind Monet’s series of paintings, it can be said that they used the technique Pointillism, which was invented by his Monet’s friend, Seurat.

Saint-Lô and Granville · Amongst Corot’s Norman works are two paintings of Saint-Lo which were released 24 years apart from
each other. Similarly to several other painters, he was attracted by the wild coasts and their lighting in southern Manche. He painted fi shing boats in Granville while Courbet chose to portray the sea.

Le Havre / Sainte-Adresse · Le Havre and Saint-Adresse inspired the forerunners of Impressionism and many of the great Impres-sionists: Boudin, Jongkind, Turner, Pissarro, Sisely...and, of course, Monet who painted the famous work ‘Impression: The Rising Sun,’ where he captured fl eeting moments by playing with colour strokes. It was in Le Havre that Monet met Boudin, who introduced him to painting and gave him the idea of painting outside.
