Baku appears like a pristine Côte d’Azur with its polished beige stone facades, its XIXth Century architecture and lavishly landscaped gardens and sea fronts complete with palm trees and bougainvillea. But don’t be fooled, the grandeur and sheer size of the road network taking you from the airport to the City Centre shows great wealth, great vision and many international influences. There are several designer bridges on the way, the famous Heydar Aliyev Foundation, a signature building by Zaha Hadid sits on your right and the three flame towers by Norman Foster can be seen beyond while stretching out into the sea the harbour with its many cranes but also oil platforms in the distance are powerful signs of a very strong economy. In the evening after sunset, all this lights up in a beautifully illuminated city with much discern for romantic discretion.

All this is the work of its current first family and their parents before them. A close knit circle makes all the decisions to ensure that Azeri culture, but also its mineral treasures, its infrastructure, banking services, health systems and all the social economic fabric is in place for international exchanges and recognition. Their efforts are rewarded because most world famous labels and multinational companies are represented here from oil, to fashion, to luxury items. What is the mission of The Red Pencil?Our first mission is to soothe, through art-thearpy, the emotional burden of children who suffer, It can be orphans, children who undergo long-term hospitalisations, or victims from natural disasters and conflict zones. Besides, we also promote art-therapy to be recognized world-wide and we offer sponsorships and scholarships to future art-therapists. Very concretly, we intervene in hospitals and devastated areas, like the Philippines in 2013 after Typhoon Haiyan. Red Pencil art-therapists went there to help children who became prostrated and mute because of the immeasurable trauma they had just been through.

How can art-therapy help those children?Some of those children have seen their home being destroyed or have lost their parents, they are under the chock. Drawing or making any creative process gives us a chance to regain control over situation which have become uncontrollable for them. If they manage to draw what they have been through, which is a non-verbal way of expressing it, hopefully they will someday talk about it. And if they talk about it, they will have all the more chances to recover from it. A child who can speak about the difficult experience he went through is already on the healing path. We try to make them express what words wouldn’t say by first giving them color pencils.

Is art-therapy only about drawing?It looks like it, yet it is only part of the process. In the word art-therapy there is the word therapy and it is a 2-year postgraduate Maters Degree, recognized and acknowledged by the major international organizations (AATA, BAAT, ANZATA etc). The ar-therapists from The Red Pencil must have a Masters Degree so that they can in-depth understand the power of drawing and how it can be a healing agent in the life of someone. Art-therapists have themselves undergone the process, they know there are questions you do not ask, and those that need to be asked but in an appriopriate way. They end up facing angry and sad children, who sometimes experience a huge feeling of injustice or who are scared. Even if those children are not fully aware of their emotions, drawing helps them to release of the emotional burden and to grieve what they have lost.

So, drawing can lead to talking?Yes, but not always immediately. When someone draws, as when the person sleeps at night, they release the burden without talking about it. Then comes the analysis part of the method which is about helping the person to tell the story of their creation. This part must happen only in an exclusively therapeutic environment and following therapeutic guidelines. In the analysis, the therapist asks the child to tell the story of their drawing, and do so in a most sensitive way, otherwise th child could be easily re-traumatized. Sometimes the child wouldn’t speak for some times, and that is perfectly fine. Silence is part of the process too and is important. It is crucial to let the child go at its own pace and rythm.

Do you stay long enough to see progress taking place?In the Philippines we were ten art-therapists and we have been working with the children during ten days in a row, with different groups of children. They draw each day and you can see the drawings evolving, as much as their emotional state. Ten days look liek a miminum, even if after a few days, you can see some chidlren emerging from some isolation towards more joy. At the end, some children can even burst into laughting because they feel so much better of having unloaded the emotional charge they were carrying.

Art-therapy is not always taken seriously, how do you manage?Before each intervention in schools, homes, family centers or hospitals, we do an awareness workshop for the local staff in charge of the children. We clearly explain that we do not come to do simply art & crafts, but art-therapy. Then we explain what is art-therapy, the modalities, our needs, the right attitudes of the local staff that helps us and what they need to avoid (as for instance, not to judge the quality of the drawings, or make remarks, or even to avoid asking certain questions). After explaining what is art-therapy, we do some hands-on activities to let them experience the benefits of art-therapy.

What drew you to add conflict zones to the areas where you are intervening?We cannot always go directly in the conflict zones, but some large humanitarian organizations are structured in such a way that traumatized persons are brought outside the core difficult areas and there we can assist the people in need. It is actually a newspaper article which opened my eyes on the situation of children in conflict zones. A psychologist working for the French Army was explaining that the children were not talking anymore, could not even cross eyes with the people around them. She described a state of complete bewilderment and confusion where the child had no expression in his eyes. When I read this testimony, I thought, « this is really where we need to be, where the suffering is such that there is no communication anymore ». Giving pencils to a child, even if it gives the impression that he draws nonsense, is a way of letting him express whatever comes from inside and respect just that. Each step of the process is meaningful and important on the path to recovery.

In conflict zones, is therapy the same as in other situations?Each therapy process is unique and needs to be adapted to the situation you are in, even if the therapeutic rules are the same. However, on a practical point of view like in Syria, we need to be surrounded by army and large and experienced humanitarian organizations. Healing children who have been growing up under the bombs, takes years because, since they were very young, they have been taught to hate other, day after days. It is the responsibility of adults to understand that if you leave these chidlren like that without bringing a therapeutic tool adapted to their age, the victims they are of war, could one day become perpetrators.

Born into a family of art and antique dealers, Patrick Berko has always had a passion for the academic, realist, orientalist and romantic schools of painting in addition to the Belle Époque period of the early 20th Century. With his wife, Viviane, he has opened galleries in Knokke-Le Zoute (in 1976), Paris (in 1978), Brussels (in 1983), Antwerp (in 1984), New York (in 1987), Tokyo (in 1989) and Shanghai (in 2008). Specialists in quality European paintings, Patrick and Viviane Berko share their passion with their children Maximin and Irina Berko and her husband, Count Nicolas de Waziers, who manage the gallery in Shanghai. Experienced collectors of art, as well as amateur art enthusiasts from all over the world are visiting Berko’s galleries. They regularly participate in the most prestigious art fairs, including those of Brussels, Paris, Maastricht, Palm Beach, Monaco, Moscow, London and Shanghai. They have published a number of art books and dictionaries including the ‘Berko’, “Dictionary of Belgian Painters born between 1750 & 1875”, “Dictionary of Belgian and Dutch Flower Painters born between 1750 and 1880” and the “Dictionary of Belgian and Dutch Animal Painters born between 1750 and 1880”. The Berko’s also have written numerous monographs including “Fernand Toussaint”, “Georges Lemmers”, “Paul Mathieu”, “Paul Leduc”, “Caroline Stiénon du Pré” and “Georges Rogy”. In 2011, they published their latest work of reference entitled “19th Century European Virtuoso Painters”.

QUINTING WATCHES

Quinting watches are the only 100% transparent watches, impossible to copy because of the complexity of the unique sapphire movement. The manufacture was founded in 2000 in Geneva by five engineers: three watchmakers, one automotive engineer, and one electromechanical research engineer, Pascal Berclaz, current President of Quinting. They decided to attempt to achieve the impossible: create a completely transparent chronograph. 7 years of research and 15 million dollars of investment later, a totally see-through chronograph, unique to the world, was created. This feat was immediately awarded by the prestigious “Prix Officiel de la Revue des Montres” in 1999. Quinting’s movement is composed of a superposition of sapphire discs, stationary and mobile. The distance between each sapphire measures 0,08 to 0,1 mm. Clients are amongst others Bill Clinton, Kofi Annan, Vladimir Poutin, Sepp Blatter, and the Swiss Government.

Intervening in overseas rescue missions by assisting children

caught in natural disasters and war/conflict zones. The

children might not be physically hurt but the emotional scare

and trauma in the mind require immediate attention.

Reaching out to all situations where children

are being stricken by long-term hospitalizations due to diseases, by traumas or disabilities and where art therapy could help to

alleviate their burden.

Providing Bursaries, Overseas Trainings, Research

opportunities and financial support for

Masters-of-Arts in Art-Therapy students whose own financial means would not allow them

to cover those costs.
