Er zijn nu eenmaal dingen, die geen ge luk aanbrengen en een van deze dingen is we
tenschap in een dom hoofd. Het recht van de mens op zijn natuurlike domheid vindt tegenwoor
dig weinig verdedigers, maar is daarom niet min
der gerechtvaardigd als het recht op de verdere
ontwikkeling van zijn begripsvermogen. Wellicht is het dat zelfs in hogere mate. Doch het klinkt
liefdeloos, als men mensen dom wil houden, zoals het liefdeloos klinkt hun een eigen badkamer te
ontraden in de moderne behuizing. Zelfs al ge beurt het ten gunste van een kinderkamer, Daar om hebben de predikers van het algemene ontwik
kelings - recht naar lichaam en geest meer kans,
gehoord te worden dan zij, die het hoogste heil maar in zeer geringe mate afhankelijk achten van

Beschaving leidt tot spitsvondigheid en
spel en onnatuur. Beschaving leidt tot analyse, tot
scepsis, tot overzinnelijke weelde aan den enen
kant en tot geestelike verdorring aan den andere.
Beschaving b^engt levenloosheid, uitputting en
onoprechtheid. Beschaving smoort in het intellec
tualisme, dat de verzieki^g is van de geest. En toch is het waar, even waar als dat barbaars
heid daar ook allemaal toe leidt en zeker als ze
gepreekt wordt. Het failliet der oude idealen is
een feit geworden voor de moderne mens. De
gesocialiseerde goederen der beschaving zijn on
dergraven door de massa aan wie ze gegeven werden, omdat de mensen niet wisten, wat ze
er mee moesten doen.
