CHARLEVOIX: On January2nd a massive crowd of support-ers and community membersarrived at the 33rd CircuitCourtroom to see an InvestitureCeremony where numerous

judges in and aroundCharlevoix County passed onadvice to the newly electedJudge Roy Hayes III.

The ceremony began at 4:00p.m. where a large audience, which spilled out into the hall-way, gathered to see Hayes takean oath and be robed as Judgeof the 33rd Circuit Court. Be-fore he took the oath however, several judges came beforethose gathered to share advicethey had collected during theirtime in the legal system. Thosespeeches began with the Honor-able Richard May who is retiredfrom the 90th District Court.

Judge May encouraged Hayesto be himself while in the po-sition of Judge and told him toenjoy the challenge of the job.He told Hayes not to be reluc-tant to ask advice of his fellowJudges and for him to consis-tently be more prepared thanthose who come before him.

Continue the reputation of this courtthat you and thiscourt treat people fairly, statedMay who concluded his re-marks by saying that he feltHayes would do an excellent

    job.Following Judge May was the

Honorable Charles Johnson of the 57th Circuit Court inEmmet County. Judge Johnsonstated that he was ready to helpHayes and looked forward tolearning from him. He teasedthat the standard as Judge hadbeen set highly by retiringJudge Richard Pajtas, and that following in thatPajtas footsteps would beboth a blessing and acurse.

If you search, the lawwill always give you theanswer, stated JudgeJohnson in closing.

    Those comments were

followed by those of theHonorable FrederickMulhauser of theCharlevoix/EmmetCounty Probate Court.Judge Mulhauser wel-comed Hayes to the re-ally close and wellrespected judicial team, and encouraged Hayes togive each case that camebefore him respect. Hereminded Hayes that forthose coming before him, their case was the mostimportant of their lives, and therefore each de-served his preparednessand attention.

Judge Mulhauser wassucceeded by the Honor-able James Erhart whocurrently presides overthe 90th District Court.Erhart wished Hayes allthe best, and remindedhim to always come tocourt in a really goodmood. He also broughttears to the eyes of thosein attendance by remind-ing Hayes of the legacyhis family has in thelegal community of Charlevoix County.

I know that your dadis smiling and lookingdown, stated Judge Er-hart of the recently

passed Roy Hayes II. Theolder Hayes was a re-spected member of thelegal communitythroughout Michigan, and served as theCharlevoix County Pros-ecutor at one point in ad-dition to being appointedby President Ronald Rea-gan as U.S. Attorney forthe Eastern District of Michigan before begin-ning his own practice inCharlevoix County.

At the close of theJudges comments, Hon-orable Richard Pajtasspoke briey before read-ing the oath to Hayes andswearing him in.

(There is) no one thatI observe with more in-tegrity than that of JoeHayes. Im proud to haveyou take over this chair, stated Pajtas.

Following his senti-ments, the oath as Judge

was taken and Hayes familypreformed the ceremony where-upon the robe of Judge was as-cribed to him. His family, including wife Kendall, anddaughters Sloan and Katherine, were commended in Hayes com-ments where he thanked themfor their endless devotion to thecampaign and their love forhim.

Sloan took a bee sting at avoters door said Hayes of his youngest daughters cam-paigning. He also described theefforts of Katherine, who cre-ated her own pamphlet thatstated Vote for My DaddyNow which Hayes framed toreinforce his strength duringcampaigning.

Hayes also thanked his fam-ily, and several members of thecommunity who had supportedhim throughout the years.Hayes expressed his apprecia-tion for the entire community

of voters in Charlevoix County, and stated that he felt proudand very lucky to have seenthe examples of those currentlyin the legal system of Charlevoix and Emmet Coun-ties. He ended the ceremony bystating his plans to serve to thebest of his ability.

Ill never lose sight of how itfeels to be an attorney practic-ing in a courtIm going to tryand do the right thing in everycase, stated Judge Hayes.

A reception followed theevent at the Grey Gables, wherecapacity was again met and ex-ceeded by those wishing thenew Honorable Joe Hayes IIIwell.

Decembers shipment of booksto area preschoolers includedthe twenty-fth thousandth bookto be distributed as part of DollyPartons Imagination Library(DPIL) program, funded inCharlevoix and Emmet Countiesby Char-Em United Way. The1,289 books sent in December tochildren from birth through ageve included board books for thelittlest children up to longer pic-ture stories for the 4 year-oldswho are nearing school age.Char-Em United Way beganfunding local participation in theImagination Library in Augustof 2012 and is very pleased at thereception from the communityand the impact the books are

having on local literacy. While the books are providedat no cost to the children, Char-Em United Way (CEUW)fundraises to cover those pro-gram costs. Some of the gener-ous community members whodonate to CEUW designate theirdonations specically to supportthe Imagination Library pro-gram and all the proceeds fromthe annual Toast to Literacyevent go to fund this literacyprogram. Grant monies, such asthose recently received from theKiwanis Foundation of HarborSprings, are also sought to coverthe expense of bringing thesebooks directly to area children.

Char-Em United Way hasprovided Imagination Libraryregistration forms to many localorganizations that serve chil-dren including libraries, hospi-

tals, preschools, and the healthdepartment, said Lorraine Ma-nary, Char-Em United Way Exec-utive Director. With thenumber of children participat-ing in the program growing, weknow that this component of oureducation initiative is positivelycontributing to early literacyand enhances the various earlychildhood education efforts inour area.

    Education, health, and income

are the areas targeted for sup-port by United Way in order tobuild stronger communities.Char-Em United Way does thislocally through grant funding of programs at many communitypartners as well as its own pro-grams and events. Stuff the Busand Day of Action are annual ed-ucation events held by Char-EmUnited Way while the Dolly Par-ton Imagination Library and theLiteracy Corps are on-going pro-

grams that support educationalefforts in the community.

The 2nd Annual Toast toLiteracy fundraising event willbe held on Saturday, February21st at the Castle in Charlevoixfrom 7 to 11 pm and will includetastings of wine, craft beer, andmead from local producers aswell as a food competition andauction. The event is a fun wayto remind everyone of the needfor literacy programs in our areaas well as being an effectivemeans to raise a portion of thefunds needed to sustain Char-Em United Ways sponsorship of the Imagination Library pro-gram, according to Char-EmUnited Way Program Manager,

Lisa Luebke. If youd like to nd out moreabout supporting this literacyprogram by attending the Toastto Literacy event, volunteeringat the event, or directly donatingto support this program, pleasecall the office at 487-1006 or emailCEUW at [email protected].
