HighGear 1July 2012

This month’s article won’t be deeply philosophical or anything, not that any are really deep or even philosophical.

No, it will be a whimsical reflection on an era gone by and the start of a new one.

Many of you may already know that Jeremy Rosenberg, editor of our club’s newsletter, is moving to Salt Lake City as soon as he can get his house sold, and, therefore, has resigned his position. His era as editor took a pretty good newsletter to not only the spectacular color, easy-to-read, informative and educational production you have all been seeing these last 2 ½ years, but to national recognition by winning the top newsletter trophy, the Paul R. Heinmiller Award!

To accomplish this, Jeremy didn’t just scab something together every month just to fulfill a position, but put some incredible thought into presenting the readership with useful information organized in comfortable and facilitative format. Always wanting to ensure that this information was forthcoming, he continually probed and prodded the membership for articles, including contributing some of his own, like the very informative synopsis he just wrote about the 2013 911 Carerra S Cabriolet that appeared in the last edition.

Editing the newsletter, however, was not the only area where Jeremy contributed to the club. He was always willing to add sage advice for difficult decisions that always seem to face the board at its monthly meetings, chair a DE, or chair a tour. In short, Jeremy was always available to help the club. We all owe such a great debt of gratitude

presidential thoughts Rick Gonçalves, President

HighGearVol. 54 Edition 7 • July 2012

to Jeremy for his contributions! So, if any of you are lucky enough to see Jeremy before he actually moves, please give him a heartfelt thanks and congratulations on his accomplishments!

But who was it that said, “All things must pass!”? I don’t remember, but it doesn’t matter. It’s true, and Jeremy’s era has passed! With the end of one era begins another. And a new era of newsletter editing now begins with David Schmidt and Bill Terry. Not only a new era, but a new concept begins with dual editors of the newsletter! That’s dual, not dueling! Technically, David will be the editor, and hold the board position, and Bill will assist.

Nonetheless, that it takes two people to do the job of one speaks immensely of the effort that Jeremy put in, and in reality, the job has grown to be larger and requires more time than any one person should be expected to provide.

Also, we could not produce our newsletter without the support of our advertisers, and one of the responsibilities of the newsletter editor has always been to ensure that there are advertisers available and paying for their ads. This responsibility creates the need for another assistant to the editor—an advertising guru. Roger Buswell has been capably meeting this need in recent times, but his era is passing too—he has too many other duties with the club as Treasurer. If any of you members are interested in assisting the editors and have appropriate advertising sales skills, your services would be greatly appreciated!

Thus, with the new era, please join with me in welcoming and supporting David and Bill, and thanking Jeremy for the great effort that has been put in!

The ladies kicked off their heels and drove it like they stole it!!! What a fantastic turnout for Ladies’ Day at the Colorado Highway Patrol Track in Golden! We had good weather…hot but no thunderstorms or hail. There were lots of “newbies” participating. They were new to an RMR DE and also new to track events. The track might be small but it is fun!

Thanks to all the volunteers who came out to help for the day; we could not

have done it without you! Also, a big thank you to our sponsors: Woodward

Wealth Management, Candlelight Tavern, Dart Auto and Delish Demure, who gave each lady driver the very cool t-shirt! If you missed this year’s Ladies’ Day, be sure to put it on the calendar for 2013!

And so the torch is passed. As of this issue, I am now officially holding the reins as Newsletter Editor, RMR Board of Directors, to what is by far the best

club newsletter in North America. Jeremy Rosenberger has created a masterpiece with High Gear and I am truly honored to carry on with the incredibly high standard he has established.

I distinctly recall when I got my first issue of High Gear last autumn, a few weeks after buying our 2002 Boxster S and, of course, joining the PCA, which seems to be the obligatory thing to do right after parking your new Porsche in your garage. I was thrilled to see how beautiful the club periodical was—more akin to a magazine than a newsletter. Nice paper, color images, and plenty of articles mixed in with plenty of ads. I was impressed. I had to double-check to make sure this wasn’t a national publication by the PCA itself. I showed it to my wife and even told her that someday I would love to be the guy laying out High Gear once this Jeremy guy had burned himself out. If only I could predict the lottery numbers as well.

Just a few issues later, Jeremy posted that he was stepping down as editor since he is moving to Utah and the club is seeking a replacement. And so here I am. Already.

Fortunately, I won’t have to tackle this alone. Bill Terry volunteered as well and will serve as Assistant Newsletter Editor to help with just about everything shy of actually laying it out. You should be proud, Jeremy: apparently it takes two men to replace you.

Rest assured, readers (and sponsors for that

matter), High Gear will continue along its path of greatness. I have been a graphic designer for over 20 years and I am very accustomed to projects such as this. Just recently, I retired from the Colorado Army National Guard with 27 years of service, most of which was spent working in the Public Affairs Office as a journalist, editor, and historian.

I am also a published author/artist. I wrote and illustrated a children’s chapter book series called Natural Forces (Cable Publishing, 2010). It’s an environmentally themed, action-adventure series aimed at 4th and 5th graders with short attention spans. You can check out my work for yourself if you wish on my web site: www.mediauprising.com.

My passions, like all of yours, include my love for that not-so-little automaker in Zuffenhausen. Our Speed Yellow 986 is our second Porsche, the first being a fantastic little ‘84 Carrera we had for a few years and finally sold, regrettably, in 2004. My wife, Jody, and I first joined the RMR Porsche Club back when we bought our 911, and we had a blast going to events and meeting people, many of whom we are glad to see are still in the club. We live in Lone Tree and spend most of our time spoiling our dogs rotten.

I hope I have assuaged any trepidation that may be lingering in the dark recesses of your mind as it relates to this, your favorite little monthly newsletter. But to truly succeed, I’ll need the help of the RMR readership as well. Your contributions in the form of photos, articles and feedback are just as critical to the continued success of High Gear as are my software-driven designs, layouts and tweaks. I look forward to meeting all of you, my constituents, in this northern Colorado clan of left-sided ignition switches.

membership musings Nancy Warren, Membership Chair

Well, we have driven into summer!

Porsche Club events are well under way. There have been several DEs at High Plains, an Autocross School, an

Autocross, the Concours d’Elegance and numerous membership socials.

What a fantastic turnout of participants and volunteers for Ladies’ Day! Fifty-two ladies showed up to drive on the CHP track in Golden. Everyone had a great time!

There were many interesting and of course beautiful cars at the Concours. We had many Porsches there but didn’t beat our record of 106 Porsches last year. Maybe next year!

This month’s membership social will be Thursday, July 5 at Stevinson Imports in Littleton. This will be our annual cook-out that includes hot dogs, hamburgers and all the fixin’s.

There will be a Post-Parade “Hot Track” DE at HPR on July 14 & 15. (page) The Underwearness 5K Run and Zoo Walk will be held on Friday evening, July 20. (page )

The Porsche Parade is being held in Salt Lake City this year from Sunday, July 8 to Saturday, July 14. Many Rocky Mountain Region members are attending the parade this year. Hope to see you there!

No matter which event you decide to attend, just remember that it is more fun with YOU there!

Please remember to renew your membership and to keep your information up to date so you do not miss out on any RMR events.

Let’s give a big, warm welcome to our newest members!

Over 33 cars in three separate run groups totaling 55 people joined in on the tour to Steamboat Springs which took just over three hours. A 15-minute stop in Granby broke the drive up perfectly and provided restrooms and Starbucks for coffee. “This is our second year running the Porsche Breakfast Club Steamboat Springs Tour,” Chad Cox, Chair of the 2012 PBC Steamboat Drive. “This year we had more cars and and many new faces including some like Melissa and Todd Huff who were new to PCA and PBC.” Cox added that many drivers chose to extend their weekend by spending the night in Steamboat instead of driving home. The drive started at the Man Cave

Steamboat Springs: Fun Run in the Sun!in Golden, down I-70, and on to CO40 directly into Steamboat Springs. The route provided opportunities for cruising and the occasional hill sprint in passing zones. The cooler mountain air was perfect for those with drop top cars a nice respite from the 100-degree temperatures in Denver. “We had a great mix of club representation this year,” Cox added. “PCA, PBC, and Rocky Mountain Sharks Club all had members in attendance with a diverse mix of Porsche cars.” Lunch was served at Fiesta Jalisco in Steamboat Springs with an open lunch menu for all. The food was fantastic and the staff did a great job taking care of our members. The event ended with

as everyone departed the restaurant to spend the rest of their day in the beauty of the Colorado High Country although some blasted back home. “I want to thank RMR PCA, Erik Behrendsen, Tom Carr, and my wife Brenna Cox for all the help and support in organizing this year’s tour,” Cox concluded. “We are fortunate to be able to bring together such diverse groups of Porsche owners through the PBC/ PCA alliance. As both a RMR PCA and PBC founding member myself, I appreciate the ongoing work Erik Behrendsen has done to further this alliance. I believe it benefits the whole community of Porsche enthusiasts and is good for PCA.”

Corner worker candidates must get on the “list”Roger Buswell

RMR-PCA will again host the PCA Club Race at High Plains Raceway on August 11th and 12th. As RMR Flag Chief for the event, one of my duties is to recruit and organize corner workers. This year will represent the inaugural affiliation of RMR-PCA safety workers with Rocky Mountain Sidewinders. RM Sidewinders is a grass-roots inter-club safety workers organization founded a couple years ago by legendary SCCA RM Region Flag Chief, Ed Shuler. The vision and objectives of Sidewi nders are to provide training, organization, recruiting and camaraderie to Colorado sports car enthusiasts who want to be involved with track safety. We want to build a big pool of skilled, experienced and reliable corner workers for all track events hosted in the Rocky Mountain region. This is good for RMR but also good for the sports car hobby.

If we don’t find a way to look past our particular club and car marque affiliations and to the big picture of road racing, there may come a time when there won’t be enough people to run any event. The honor and excitement of being a corner worker needs to be better positioned. The Esprit de Corps and swagger of working corners need to rekindled.

If you have an interest in being part of this special avocation, please send me your contact information (best phone and e-mail address) at [email protected] or call me at 303.660.6199.

The Charity Committee has selected the Drop Your Drawers & Run Wild 5K Run and Zoo Walk for this year’s challenge run/walk. You are invited to sign up as individuals and families. Bring your kids and/or your grandkids for great fun and a chance to spend an evening at the Denver Zoo. Final location information will be sent after you register.

The founders of UNDERWEARNESS are young professionals who regularly count their many blessings in life. When it came to their attention that some children do not have underwear—clean or otherwise—it was decided that this wasn’t acceptable. Come join your fellow track junkies for what will be a grand test of drivers and machines on our favorite 2.54-mile, 15-turn track. Racers, come test yourselves against a field of club racers that will be one of the strongest ever. We are anticipating a good showing from the Kansas City Region as well as plenty of folks from Utah, Oklahoma, and Texas. Expect the weekend to be the most thrill-packed event of the season at High Plains. Tons of track time await you. A test and tune is scheduled for Friday the 10th with a dedicated run group for racers. Saturday will offer 3 practice sessions, a fun race and a 60-minute enduro. Sunday will round out with 2 more sprint races. To help you prepare adequately for the weekend, track entry is allowed as early as 3 PM on Thursday August 9th. So come early, get settled, and enjoy a shower in our new facility

which was installed this spring. Need to learn your way around HPR? Get it right from pro racer and PCA National Club Racing Coach David Murry. He’ll be on hand all weekend to review your video, and he’ll give the Friday night “chalk talk” at 5 in the classroom. DE drivers should be acquainted with HPR as instructors will not be available on this weekend—because we’re all racing! We promise good weather, great competition, and a fine dinner on Saturday night! See you there. Reserve an RV spot before they sell out by going online at www.highplainsraceway.com. On Thursday, June 14 the, “Largest Gathering of Porsches”, was successfully held at Club Auto Colorado after having to cancel the pervious week due to severe weather in the area. Even though the event had to be rescheduled, it still had a very healthy 176 Porsches grace the black top and more than 260 RMR-PCA members turnout, on a beautiful June evening. We did not break our pervious record of 181Porsches, but the sea of those beautiful machines all lined up, looked as if they had just come off the production line in Stuttgart, said Erik Behrendsen, RMR-PCA’s program chairman. This is our third year in a row and it’s become a tradition that will continue on every year as long as members want to still do it. The sponsors of the event, The Man Cave, Pizza Public, and Glosstec are to be thanked for helping make this years event a great success!

Story by Roger Buswell, photos by Max Gerson

As Event Chair for my third RMR Rock ‘N’ Roll DE, I must say that this time around was rewarding, emotional and exasperating. One minute I’m hearing a gleeful non-PCA member tell of his multi-second improved time and the next minute I’m viewing a friend’s crinkled-up Cup car. The weather was outstanding, yet the heat on Sunday caused several event-delaying breakdowns. Track incidents were momentous and typical for an SCCA or PCA Club Race event, not a DE. The camaraderie that our superb RMR volunteers displayed was a sight to behold. And yet our registrations were down from last year. Where were you guys? (Sigh) My friends kept telling me that I was being too hard on myself, but I’m a card-carrying perfectionist so that is the burden I bear. Nevertheless, the constant stream of driver-students, crew, event workers and board members, shaking my hand and expressing their toothy-grinned delight and gratitude said it all for me. This Rock ‘N’ Roll DE was a remarkable victory!

My mother taught me always to count my blessings, so here is a partial list for June 16th and 17th:

• The Dream Team of Dan Mayer (event Chief Driving Instructor), Vicki Earnshaw (event co-CDI), Doug Bartlett (RMR CDI) and Alan Fritze (event Observer) performed exceptionally during our track incident. I want to point out that Vicki, who is Chief Steward for all of Porsche Club Racing in North America, was particularly classy during the harrowing moments of our major track incident. She could have easily just taken over, given her national rank, but she let us learn and handle pressing analysis and stressful decisions while offering only gentle guidance. It’s true: Vicki has a beautiful mind, too.

• Where would we be without Glenn Conser, HPR track manager? Seriously!

• Jan and Joe Michel stood out in the blazing hot wind and sun with nary a whimper and orchestrated the show from Grid like a symphony.

• Our patient and well trained instructors helped students learn what high performance driving really means.

• George Strimbu, Robert Roper and Gwenael Hagen had their hands full in Control. It’s rumored that they expended a case of batteries recalculating the run session lengths, break periods and flag signal intervals all while keeping us in the loop with “radio voice talent” calm on the PA.

• Keith Hall, Joe Warren and new recruit Mahlon Schanzenbach were the wizards of Equipment.

• As you can see by the article’s images, Max Gerson is a master artist with his digital SLR.

• Tim and Rachel Bevan held down the Rock ‘N’ Roll fort at Registration for the first time and worked through the Motorsportreg maze with distinction. Rachel will be giving birth to a brand new RMR member in about a month.

• Our generous members donated nearly $1,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project during lunchtime Parade Laps.

• Is there any doubt that Erik Behrendsen and the Porsche Breakfast Club know how to host a party? Beer:30 was fun, raucous and well attended.

Club Race and Advanced Solo DE, August 11-12, 2012

The region that started it all is celebrating our

20th Anniversary Club Race!

That’s right, Rocky Mountain Region held the very first Club Race at Second Creek Raceway in 1992. It was an exciting event, and we have been hosting successful races in our Region ever since. For years, the race carried the name “First Ever Anywhere” because we were the first! It is now known as “High Plains Thunder,” thanks to Greg Volan, who designed our new Club Race event logo. Our yearly Club Race and Solo DE would never have happened without the support of the RMR Board of Directors and the energy and commitment of many of our Regional members. You have generously volunteered your time and support in the organizing of all these races over the past 20 years—thank you.

For complete details, please read our Club Race and Advanced Solo DE event details on RMR’s Web site, rmr.pca.org. Click the Club Race logo at the bottom of the home page for vital event information.

Our special guest this year, once again, will be David Murry, PCA National Club Racing Coach. Read David Murry’s bio at www.davidmurry.com. David will be doing the “Track Chalk Talk” on Friday, August 10th at 5:00 PM, and will be presenting his notes during his lunch time talk on Saturday. Everyone is welcome to attend. David also will provide “David Murry Minutes” at

the end of each drivers’ meeting on Saturday, providing valuable insight during the event. Please come out to HPR on Friday evening or Saturday and meet David.

HPR has a new spectator area for better viewing of the races along with our DE run groups. The new spectator area will be open for your enjoyment on both days. Please check the schedule for its opening time and take advantage of the opportunity to see even more of the racing action.

Feel free to contact the Co-Chairs for this year’s Club Race & Advanced Solo DE event. They will be happy to answer any of your questions:

• Kathy Fricke ([email protected] • Vicki Earnshaw ([email protected]) • Brian Leary ([email protected])

Our Club Race Registrar is Norma Nada ([email protected]). Race registration opens Monday, June 25th online at register.pca.org. Norma is always willing to assist the racers with any questions or concerns.

For questions on the Advanced Solo DE event, the CDI’s are more than happy to talk with you. Contact Cecil Morris ([email protected]) or Doug Bartlett (doug.bartlett@ comcast.net).

Tommy Dean has set up the usual Drivers Ed Pre-Tech locations for this event. You must have your car pre-teched prior to the

Advanced Solo DE.Our Advanced Solo DE Registrar is

Nancy Warren; call or e-mail her if you need assistance at [email protected] or 303.604.1289. Online registration for the Solo DE will be available at pcarockymtn.motorsportreg.com. The DE registration opens Monday, June 25th and closes Monday, August 6th at 4:00 PM. A limited number of entrants will be accepted for this DE event, so please register early!

HPR’s Friday lapping day is set aside for PCA members and friends only. It is not a part of the PCA Club Race event, so to participate in the lapping day, please book directly through the HPR Web site at www.highplainsraceway.com. You will be able to arrive at HPR on Thursday, late afternoon, to set up your rigs for the lapping day on Friday or the weekend event.

Fellow PCA members, this is your chance to watch our once-a-year regional wheel-to-wheel racing event. Don’t miss this opportunity to join in the excitement and camaraderie. Join us August 11/12 at High Plains Raceway!

Post Parade Hot Track DE • July 14-15Mark your calendars for the Post Parade Hot Track DE, July 14-15. This DE is perfectly timed right after you return from the Porsche Parade in Salt Lake City. You had a great time looking, talking and maybe a little autocrossing your Porsche. Reward yourself! You avoided speeding tickets all the way out and back, so you should be really ready to get out on the track and do some high-speed driving without the fear of tickets, non-attentive vacationers, trucks, etc. Stay tuned to the RMR Web site for more details as they become available. in the zone Sean Cridland, PCA Zone 9 Representative

This has been a great month in my time as Zone 9 Rep. By the time you read this I will have visited my own Region for the 35th Fiesta New

Mexico (formerly Fiesta del Porsche), then made the trip up to Salt Lake City to help out at the Intermountain Region’s annual Club Race and DE and to do some final checking on the site venues for the Parade events I’m chairing and a few other items. But really, this doesn’t sound like all that much does it? Well, as they say, the devil is in the details.

Fiesta this year was extra special for so many reasons. For one, we had some very special visitors. In early May, I got a call from former Roadrunner President and Zone 9 Rep Cal Hansen’s daughter Janet saying that her mom Bonnie had passed away and as a way to heal the wound, she and her dad would be coming to Santa Fe for Fiesta. Though I had only “met” Cal via e-mail and Facebook as I was working on a Zone 9 history project this past year, I began to hear all kinds of great stories about him from all over the Zone. Putting out word to his PCA friends resulted in a great and enthusiastic response. Everyone was glad to hear that Cal was coming to visit.

Sure enough, Cal and Janet showed up for registration on Thursday and everyone was effusive in greeting their good friend. Cal hadn’t been to a Fiesta since 1993, but you wouldn’t have known it by the reception he received. It was like he’d never been away. Some of his friends who weren’t registered for Fiesta even made the trip to Santa Fe for concours day just to visit with Cal. And it made for a rare occasion when four Zone 9 Reps were all in one place.

Besides Cal and me, we also had on hand Larry Pittsley and Dale Thero. Adding to the luster, we also had former Zone 6 Rep Linda Bein and former Zone 10 Rep Hank Godfredson, both of whom had worked with Cal. It was great to welcome

home a Roadrunner with such fanfare and I was honored to be able to play a part in this reunion.

This was another great Fiesta. It was the second year the event was back in Santa Fe, but the first year the cars were back on the plaza since 2004. Event chairs Liz Shaw and Jo Martin were able to procure an autocross venue within city limits, so the autocrossers didn’t have to drive all day to and from the venue. There were at least seven tours and a poker rally and the Sunday night banquet featured a fantastic talk by Porsche Panorama editor Betty Jo and chief photographer Leonard Turner.

They gave a slideshow presentation called “Beneath the Covers” during which the two of them told some really great stories about the travels, trials, and tribulations, that resulted in six of their most iconic cover shots. Adding to the poignancy of the event is the knowledge that these two PCA icons are retiring at the end of this year from their positions at Panorama after more than forty years of stewardship. Sandra and I acted as “hosts” during the weekend and spent many an hour on tours and during meals soaking in their amazing wealth of knowledge and spirit of adventure. I doubt there is anyone in the world of Porsche outside the family itself who knows more about the people and cars called Porsche.

In addition, all the events went off without a hitch and the Roadrunner Region raised thousands of dollars for their chosen charity, the Barrett Foundation of Albuquerque. Everyone agreed: this was

a weekend to remember!A short respite and then it was off to Salt

Lake City to work with the Intermountain folks on their always great Club Race and DE weekend. For several years, it was held in September, but this year they moved it to June to take advantage of a gap in the busy Club Race schedule and, I suspect, to give themselves a rest this fall after having so much going on in their Region this year, with the Zone 9 and Parade Planning meetings, the Race weekend, and Porsche Parade in July. They are an able and enthusiastic bunch, but come August and September they’re gong to deserve a rest!

Intermountain is not a large region, about 340 members, but they act large when it comes to putting on events. The Club Race/DE event at Miller is at the top of the heap when it comes to a quality event and the facility at Miller Motorsports Park is without equal. If you’ve never been, put in on your calendar. You’ll be glad you did.

A brief stop at home and it’s time to turn around and go back up to Parade in Salt Lake City. I hope you’ve signed up. There are so many great events and tours and dinners and socials lined up it’ll have your head spinning. Since I’m chairing three events and participating in a few more, I’m going to be pretty busy, but don’t let that stop you from saying hello. I’m here for Zone 9 and I always like meeting my fellow PCAers from around our seven great Regions. See you there!

HighGear26July 2012

When Is a Car Like a Person? I had two scares recently. The first was with the gearbox on my 911SC.

There I was, tooling along, and all of a sudden, out of the blue, I couldn’t get into fifth.

But it was worse than that. Third seemed to be where fifth should be. And when I had to parallel park, I found that I could barely find reverse.

Now, remember, this was on a ’78 SC with 47,000 miles. For which nothing had been done to the gearbox, ever, other than normal maintenance and the installation of a short shift kit, about eight years ago. One second it was perfectly fine, and the next, it was a mess.

It just so happened that, about the same time, I had my annual physical. My doc called me a few days later with test results that everything was fine. As it should be, and has been forever. I’ve been scoring within “normal” for everything they check for, for years. And I pour on too many miles a week in dedicated running to even think about any health issues. I was ready for another “keep it up, see you in a year.” But then he paused… and said there was just one thing, my PSA score had doubled since my last physical.

It could be the result of my working out, he said, and doing so shortly before the test. And it could be, well, you know, the second most common cancer, after skin cancer, among men in the U.S.

He wasn’t sure. So he said, to be on the safe side, I should see a urologist.

For the Porsche, I made an appointment at Eurosport. I didn’t dare even start the car until the appointment. And I drove slowly and deliberately. The gearbox wasn’t getting any worse. But it sure wasn’t getting any better, either.

We went through “could be this, could be that.” You know, bushings sometimes just up and, well, explode. We won’t know until we go in.

And I went to the urologist. They did another urine sample, and another blood sample. The doctor heard me out on my physical condition. He congratulated me on my running. But it’s unusual for the PSA score to double in one year, he said, even though I was still

not in the classic danger range.Just to be on the safe side, he said, let’s schedule a biopsy, in two

weeks. It’s a simple procedure. Ten minutes. Much less invasive than a colonoscopy, for example. And if the new tests come back negative, we can cancel.

For the Porsche, by noon the day after dropping off the car, I hadn’t heard anything. So I called.

I was in luck, they said. It was several bushings. Nothing more. And they had them in stock. Come back later this afternoon and pick up your car.

Which I did. And, after almost 24 years of ownership, it was a remarkable thing. The car shifted better than it ever had. In fact, I had never shifted a 915 gearbox so smoothly. Amazing. It was a revelation.

I came home from the urologist, and went immediately on-line, to the Mayo Clinic site, and read everything on the subject of the prostate. I read about the types of prostate cancer. I read about the stages of aggression, and their respective treatments.

And I waited. So I contacted a few close friends. And got inundated with a

torrent of stories about other friends, and about relatives. I heard about false positives, about the choice of treatments, about the consequences of certain treatments, about side effects, about positive and negative side effects.

Two days after the urologist visit, the doctor’s office called. The nurse told me that my PSA score was back down, way back down. The doctor was canceling the biopsy. And he wanted to see me again in three or four months. They said they’ll call me.

I got off the phone and sat back. Were these similar incidents? Sure. Were they both traumatic? Absolutely. Did visions, scenarios, life projections, dance across my mind? You betcha.

So I vowed to enjoy my shifting, and keep running like Hell. There’s no stopping me now, no stopping me ever, I thought.

But then I thought, wait a minute, a car, even a Porsche, is really just a mechanical device. Its purpose in life is to transport you to a destination, isn’t it? It’s a machine. It’s not like it’s a person. It’s not like it’s flesh and blood.

Or is it?

what we doWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by particip ating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more. Each year RMR organizes a variety of opportunities to enjoy and learn about your Porsche.

Driving Events

Non-Driving Events

TourA tour is a non-competitive driving event in which

participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR typically offers several. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade as well.Rally

A rally is a competitive event in which contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.Autocross (AX)

An autocross is a competition in which drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals—typically only one or two cars are on the course at any time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross

events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade.Driver Education (DE)

A driver education event provides a safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement, for bragging rights, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.Club Race

A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races. As a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, a club race is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each year at High Plains Raceway which, combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

Membership Social Membership socials provide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst. RMR’s membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch High Gear and the RMR Web site for details. And if you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Program Committee Chair or a Board member!Tech Session A tech session is just what it sounds like—a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by experienced

Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear. RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade.Concours d’Elegance A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete. RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

Amy Legg-Rogers, Historianthe rearview mirrorThe First Ever Anywhere PCA Club RaceSecond Creek Raceway, June 7, 1992Sixty drivers, half of whom had never raced before, signed up for The First Ever Anywhere PCA Club Race, driving everything from a stock 1955 Speedster to an ex-factory-team RSR. Most race or time-trial cars were trailered to the event, but in the great tradition at least 10 members drove street cars to the track, raced them and then drove home. More than a third of the entrants came from outside of Colorado.
