SEASON 2015-16 LIFESAVING INFORMATION

MESSAGE FROM THE LIFESAVING COMMITTEE.

PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION IT IS OF HIGH IMPORTANCE.

Welcome to the 2015-16 Surf Life Saving Season.

I hope everyone has had a good break over the winter months and that you’re all ready for the surf

season ahead. This season is once again a long patrol season, please remember, it’s important you know

when your patrols are and plan accordingly for replacements or substitutions for those patrols

you know you can’t attend. If we all follow this philosophy it just makes the season much more

enjoyable for all members. Remember, your patrol commitment is rewarded with an end of season ski

trip for the 100%ers and the Patrol Competition winning team, so ensure you all set your goals

nice and early!

This season we are trialling a number of initiatives to cut down the patrol rotations in particular. For

2015-16 there will generally be 10 rotations, down from 12 last season. The lifesaving committee

recognises modern lifestyles make it difficult for people to provide and commit so much time to keeping

our beach safe. Hopefully these initiatives help in achieving what it is intended to deliver for our

patrolling membership. These initiatives are as follows:

The shoulder (early and latter season) patrols have been extended to full day patrols.

Each Christmas Day patrol extended by 30 minutes and cut back from 4 to 3 patrols.

Volunteer patrols extended for this season due to Anzac Day & Aussies clash.

100% of patrol hours achieved by attendance or with one substitution will be recognized for eligibility in the ski weekend. 100% Patrol Award (attendance on rostered patrol without

changes) is still the only method of receiving recognition in the clubs presentations.

Patrol 3 as the largest patrol will trial a split shift style roster this season. This should enable

substitutions and flexibility within the team.

Patrol 10 will be a Sunday ONLY patrol, for those members who work Saturdays.

We have initiated these trials as we endeavour to lighten the burden on members, and hopefully make

patrolling more rewarding. We hope that you will repay this effort by ensuring that you attend patrols

wherever possible, and adhere to the club rules for patrolling when you cannot.

In advance, we’d like to thank you all for the great work I know you’ll all do protecting our beaches and

the public once again this season. I hope you and your fellow patrollers enjoy the season ahead. Your

safety is extremely important to the club also, so always remember your training, be vigilant and stay

safe.

The Club signs an agreement with the SLSNSW & SLSS to meet certain guidelines and minimum patrol requirements, and as such must ensure that adequate volunteer numbers are available for each patrol.


It is a requirement that you attend ALL your rostered patrols. Please refer to the guidelines

below;

1. Be punctual and arrive approximately 15 minutes prior to your patrol start time, to sign on and be briefed by the Patrol Captain; otherwise you may not be able to sign on. You will be credited

with this time. DO NOT leave the following patrol short of its minimum required patrollers.

2. You must wear full patrol gear at all times while patrolling, including IRB Driver and Crew whilst in the IRB. Patrol uniform is patrol shorts, long sleeve patrol shirt, patrol skull cap and approved

patrol sun hat/peaked cap – no third party peaked caps or hats can be worn as these now a part of the

official sponsored patrol uniform. The Patrol Captain should not allow you to sign on if you fail to wear the full patrol uniform.

You are required to wear sunglasses, and sunscreen, and we encourage all members to drink plenty of

water especially during hot summer days, - bring a water bottle for replenishment.

3. While on patrol, there will be NO training for competition. Failing to obey this rule will result in your

name being deleted from the days patrol log by the Patrol Captain.

4. If you cannot attend your rostered patrol,

A: You must attempt to obtain a substitute (which can now be requested online)

with similar qualifications to cover your patrol. “No shows” with “No sub” will result in communication from the club after the monthly patrol audits.

B: You must inform your patrol Captain and Vice-Captain.

If you do not, communicate with the Patrol or Club Captain on this matter you may be issued with penalty patrols. Patrol Hours are audited on a monthly basis, failure to meet the required amount of

patrol hours at each audit without communication with the Club Captain, will result in you being

withdrawn from competition until you have reached the required amount of patrol hours.

5. You must complete the full patrol. Signing the logbook and leaving early (except with the permission

of your Patrol Captain) is not acceptable.

6. Ensure you record your name and times correctly and legibly in the log book. Not doing this may lead to you not being accredited the correct hours.

7. Ensure your membership fee is paid prior to November 30th to remain a financial member of the

Club. EFTPOS and credit cards are welcome at the office.

8. I encourage every patrol member, to have a chat to your patrol captain and discuss what and how

you can improve your lifesaving award status. This is to both help the club provide a robust lifesaving

service to the community, and help you individually. These skills go a long way in helping with your working careers as well.

9. A combined calendar of competition and patrol dates is available on the clubs website. This calendar

should help in identifying where these coincide, so as to help with organizing patrol replacements.

Remember that most members of Cronulla SLSC have patrol obligations. Please check the requirements

of your membership category and remember no matter what, we are all bound by the clubs patrol rules

and regulations found on the patrol card. It also allows us to plan for adequate and equal numbers per

patrol team. This in turn then ensures your friends and other members are not then doing more

unnecessary patrol hours so as to cover your absence.

SMS PATROL NOTIFICATIONS

This season members can once again expect an automated message to be sent to their mobile phone

approximately 4 days before their next rostered patrol. This should assist members in planning ahead

and remembering their obligations to the club, and ideally result in a marked increase in attendance

rates.

If any members change patrols, change their phone number, or are receiving messages to the wrong

phone (i.e. parents phone) it is important to inform the Club Captain via email so the phone settings can

be updated – send to [email protected]. Additionally, also contact the club office

[email protected] to advise of your changed contact details.

PATROL HOURS FOR COMPETITION

If you are unsure of the minimum patrol hour requirement from SLSNSW, please refer to the SLSA web

site and look up policy 5.4, or ask the office for a copy of the requirements. If you do not meet the

minimum requirements applicable to your category, or you fall into default of your hours, (normally 25

hours) then the club cannot (and will not) enter you in any carnivals.

Surfguard will not allow members to be entered for competition if the required patrol hours have not

been recorded.

Note: The 25 hours for competition is patrol hours performed from 1st Jan 2015 till 31st Dec 2015.

If you are unsure of your hours, please review your record via the members portal or contact the club

office.

Members who do not complete the clubs minimum requirement of 75% their rostered patrols (where

applicable) will not be eligible for any club subsidy until these hours are made up. This includes craft,

touring team subsidies and any financial assistance package offered. If your having problems due to

competition commitments please inform the Club Vice Captain sooner rather than later to discuss

alternatives.

SUBSTITUTION FOR PATROLS

You can request a substitution for a patrol online through the Members Portal, or contact other

members directly.

SLSNSW have made available to members the ability to request a substitution online. More details on

how to manage this will be sent early in the season.

You should make every attempt to source your own substitute. If you are unable to source a

substitute, please contact the office and provide your details. We will then attempt to organise via SMS

or similar. Note: This should be a last resort scenario.

and complete, and we encourage everyone to test yourself using this facility.
