2014-2016 REVELATION / REVOLUTION is an art and film project about mischievous saints, recalcitrant Madonnas and a sulky Baby Jesus who sneaks out at night. We enter a world where plastic figurines and carvings come to life, where apparitions are a part of everyday life and where the divine presence leaves tangible traces in the physical world. The project seeks to build on the ingenuity of ”religious inventiveness” where indigenous people make wilful remakes of Catholicism as well as turning stories of the santos into driving forces of the local economy; claiming local cultural specificity through new technologies as well as re-sacralize places at a time when spatiality becomes increasingly virtualised and absent.

EARLIER PROJECTS

2011-2013 THE EUROAXACAN INITIATIVE OF TRANSFORMATIVE CULTURES (EITC) was a European-Mexican collaboration running 2011-2013. It connected art with traditional —as well as future — crafts, while bridging the gap between the digital, mediated and corporeal worlds. The overall aim was to be a catalyst of socioeconomic transformations by means of transcultural production. The EITC project was initiated and managed by Performing Pictures (Sweden) and Talleres Comunitarios de Zegache (Mexico) in collaboration with FoAM and nadine (Belgium), Space Makers Agency (Great Britain), XaQuixe (Mexico) and Cuartielles (Sweden). Supported with a two-year grant by the EU Culture 2007 program, The Swedish Arts Grants Committee, The Swedish Arts Council and Stockholms Stads Kulturförvaltning.

2011-2013 RESILIENTS brought together six European organisations and their networks, to address the issue of resilience by strengthening intercultural diversity and exchange. ‘Resilients’ are cultural workers of all ages preparing for uncertain futures, by studying and experimenting with new models of living and working as a form of artistic practice. Supported with a two-year grant by the EU Culture 2007 program, The Swedish Arts Council and Stockholms Stads Kulturförvaltning.

2010-2012 CHANGING PLACES was a three-year study, investigating how local and transnational events are mediated through public space, focusing on the screen practices that

come into play as large format and handheld screens are used in arenas of public life. The project was run in a collaboration between Stockholm University and Performing Pictures with support from the Swedish Science Council (Vetenskapsrådet). The research was led by prof. Karin Becker.

2008-2009 SENSING CHANNELS brought together 3 artist groups from different parts of the Nordic region, with the aim of creating new works pushing the boundaries of the art of interactive video. Although the artists drew their roots from different practices, they had three distinct characteristics in common: (1) they have adopted the associative bond (i.e. working as a group or collective), (2) they use moving images as their medium, and (3) their artistic expression involves advanced technological developments and inventions, which are strongly intertwined with the artistic expression. The use of video is the nexus joining these associations on a pragmatic-artistic level. The project was initiated and led by Performing Pictures and supported by Nordic Culture Point.

2006-2008 CINÉSENSE was a three-year artistic research project in collaboration between Performing Pictures and Linköpings Universitet, with support from the Swedish Science Council (Vetenskapsrådet). The project explored urban artwork from two aspects: firstly in interacting with the place of display and secondly in interaction with its public. The research was led by prof. Karin Becker.

2006-2009 GUILD FOR REALITY GENERATORS AND INTEGRATORS (gRig) was a group of European artistic and cultural operators gathered around a mutual purpose; to research and create meaningful situations in hybrid (or mixed) realities, where digital media and physical materials, objects and spaces are increasingly intertwined. Initiated and led by FoAM Brussels, and supported with a three-year grant by the EU Culture program.

2006-2007 WAVES investigated electromagnetic waves as the principle material – the medium – of media art. The project was run by the centre for new media culture RIXC in Riga in collaboration with co-organisers (OKNO/Belgium, TESLA/Germany, PROJEKT ATOL/Slovenia, ELLIPSE/France, Performing Pictures/Sweden) Supported with a one-year grant by the EU Culture program.

PERFORMING PICTURES is an artist duo founded in Stockholm in 2004

by Geska Helena Brečević (born 1975) and Robert Brečević (born

1971).

We draw on our backgrounds in film-making, stage and costume

design, cinema and drama criticism, and game design to make

shorter-than-short films, snapshots that blur the line between still

and motion media. These are built into physical objects, often

installed in locations outside the fine art circuit: a Stockholm

railway station concourse, a watchtower on a former Soviet army

base, the entrance to the cashiers hall of a bank in Istanbul.

PERFORMING PICTURES’ work combines stillness and movement,

often coming alive at the moment a viewer approaches. This

responsiveness creates a sense of intimacy and surprise, a

playfulness that attracts and occasionally provokes.

A visit to Mexico in 2008 led to an ongoing collaboration with the

Talleres Comunitarios de Zegache. This phase of our work has also

seen an increased attention to the patterns of human movement

associated with economic migration and religious pilgrimage.

Sometimes, in the migrant’s dream of a final return, the

separation between these secular and sacred patterns dissolves.

The crossing of these lines — vertical and horizontal, temporal

and spatial, secular and sacred — marks the spot on which our

pictures perform their enterprise.

Cycling pilgrims, a 30 cm tall Madonna figure, falling men and a five year old girl’s future memories are some of the threads weaving a story about faith beyond the boundaries of belief, about the hope that nothing will ever fall into oblivion, and the overflowing love of images.Watch a 2-minute teaser on https://vimeo.com/154869940

UNREALITY INSTALLATION

The Unreality Installation is inspired by René Girard’s thoughts of ”the mimetic desire”. The longing to be

like the other, to have what the other has, is reflected in a carousel of subject, object and mediator. Where,

when, how and in what way is up to the observer to gather.

UNREALITY INSTALLATION (2008) In collaboration with choreographer Anna Koch. With Simon Norrthon as

himself and The Other | Live video installation room | Video and photo prints in numbered editions | Simon vs.

AD NOS CONVERTE (Detail of video still)

Life is something that might turn its benevolence towards us in the glimpse of a moment, as we look the other way. The focal point of Salve Regina - one of four ‘Marian antiphons’ - is the plead to the gracious advocate Mary that she may turn her eyes of mercy towards us. The aim is to invoke a circular movement directed towards us. The essence of motion is temporal, as such, elusive. This is not a picture.

An hour and a half long visual narrative in

7 suites, created on commission by Swedish

Radio (SR) specially for the concert “Hommage

aux femmes dans la musique: Du romantique

à l’électronique” held at the UNESCO

Headquarters in Paris on March 8, 2013.

ROAD CHAPEL #6 Follow the Fold – reinventing pilgrimage

as a contemporary way of travelling

In June 2012 we crossed Central Europe on

bicycles. The Peregrini cycling crew consisted

of nine people from Sweden, Belgium, Holland

and Chile, mainly artists but also our 13-year old

son. The route was arbitrarily determined by the

centrefold on a Belgian map of Europe, a straight

line going from Poland to the island of Rab in

Croatia. “Following the fold” became our only rule;

the code. Following the fold from the Baltic to the

Mediterranean Sea mounted to 1690 kilometres

in 18 days on bicycle. We built and mounted eight

newly built road chapels along the way. Wooden

DIY-modules illuminated by night with solar

energy. These venerative artefacts were left on the

road as gifts and greetings to future pilgrims and

travellers.

ROAD CHAPEL No. 6 (2012): Plywood, oil paint, figurine, 5v solar panel and LED. 25 x 17 x 17 cm.

Installed by the road outside of Znojmo, Czech

Republic.

KIRA In 2013 Performing Pictures created a

multimedial dollhouse scenography as

well as costumes for the opera KIRA in

collaboration with performance artist

Charlotte Engelkes and composer Anders

Nilsson, commissioned by Västerås

Symphony Orchestra. The result is a visually

surprising and wayward performance with

lots of humor.

THE CROSSING OF TWO LINES Book, 2013

The Crossing of Two Lines is a collaboration between Performing Pictures

and the writer Dougald Hine. From the Croatian island of Rab to the pueblo of

Zegache in Oaxaca, Mexico, hundreds of colour photographs chart the making

and use of venerative artefacts. Meanwhile, in a series of texts—one essay, four

interviews, ten short poems—we trace the intersecting lines of personal and

collective experience which meet in this work.

THE CROSSING OF TWO LINES is designed by Transfer Studio and published by

Elemental Editions. The publishing has been made possible with the support of The

Swedish Arts Grants Committee and the EU Cultural Program.
